IIRC, LFS has the only VR mirror implementation where, if you move your head around a bit, the mirror reflection changes based on your current head position.

Not sure if the mirror reflection is rendered with stereo separation though.

Bikes are different than cars in that there is a lot more athletic talent required to be fast. We can't really have the user provide these movements because they require so much info from the bike/road that can't currently be conveyed though a sim rig (yet).

I think, with the recent renaissance of VR, it's going to be easier for users to provide the movements. Perhaps the user also gets more feedback from stereoscopic HMD's.

Quote from Shirtkicker :I personally feel that there is a minimum requirement for a simulator experience - for driving, you need a wheel; for flying, you need a joystick; and so on. if you need to replace the entire control system with something completely different, then you're not really simulating.

I'm personally glad that your opinion is not shared by too many people. The reason is that, the improvement of both simulation software and hardware is a chicken and egg problem. When some early sims came out, say early Nascar Racing, wheels were either non-existent or not accessible or really bad, depending on which part of the world you're in. Now if sim makers back then stopped making sims that were "not really simulating" just because players didn't have wheels, then the wheel makers wouldn't bother making wheels because there were no games. If the wheel makers didn't make wheels, then the sim makers wouldn't bother making sims, player wouldn't bother playing... Then we'd have gotten nowhere.

But we did get far. Racing sims had been made drivable using keyboard/mouse/joystick in the absence of wheels. Then the hardware caught up. None of the improvement was made by people who thought "not really simulating" then walked. The same story goes for flight-sims. I'm thoroughly in the hopes that motorcycle sims will grow until someone figures out the proper way to make a good controller for it, one which I can go out and buy.

Quote from Shirtkicker :I agree with you, but in this case the key word is 'simulator'.

That reminds me of the Hellcat in IL2. To operate the landing gear you must realistically crank a wheel. Now since no one ever produced a flight-sim landing gear crank wheel controller, you use the keyboard.

There's also this funny Lewis machine gun on SE5a's in Rise of Flight, that you can realistically elevate to fire upwards. Now since no one ever produced a Lewis machine gun elevation controller, you use the keyboard.

There was also this awesome submarine simulator called 688i. Now since no one made a proper sim sonar operator panel, you use the mouse.

Funny I don't remember any racing wheel controller that came with a keyhole ignition. I guess if you stall in LFS you have to use the keyboard as well.

If you can't see the point of adapting whatever's available to control the sim of choice, then you're left with only computer simulators I'm afraid.

Quote from Shirtkicker :I really don't see the point of motorcycle games - with a driving sim you can at least set up a car-like cockpit with a wheel and pedals, but I've yet to see a motorcycle sim controller.

Well, it's just going to be like fighting games on a gamepad and FPS with keyboard and mouse. For the majority of games the control method isn't anywhere realistic. I feel quite ok using joystick/gamepad with bike games.

Pulse Width Modulation can somewhat turn on-off devices into proportional devices. Google it, if you'd really like to use a key as analogue handbrake.

Quote from Kasjok :I think rikkiewhitehead must be right as I can`t find any similiar problems from internet, I haven`t had much experiance with wheels and this explanation makes sense.

No, not 30 degrees as you mentioned. A 30 degree total slack is not right.
GT5P with Driving Force GT steering lag?

Ok, I got this wheel playing the game it was designed for, but there's very noticeable steering lag. It makes catching slides way too hard. Does anyone else get this? Is there a workaround?

I know this isn't a GT forum but I think it's useless to ask console players, them having too little experience with properly configured wheels playing properly supported games (G25 + LFS sort of experience).

This one's nice and in development. There's a beta demo out that let's you drive a Lada through one stage. Promising, I must say.

Just remember to turn "spring effects" to some sensible value for Logi wheels.

I did play the game for a short period. I stopped because the steering wheel support was rubbish. Any input device was treated gamepad-like, which means a big NO to a racing game to stay in my computer.

I voted for 2 as well. What would you become by staying with option 1? Absolutely nothing, at least not any better than yesterday, UNLESS you're really motivated and take the free office time to pursue your own goals. Otherwise, once the company goes down, or otherwise can't employ you anymore, you'll be totally out of options. Especially if you get used to being paid much.

Going option 2, you stay somewhat fresh everyday and get to learn things you do want to learn (right?) That way if and when new opportunity comes you'll be ready for it. As long as the money's OK... take the 1/4 lower salary as investment in yourself.

But that's just the whole point, I think: yourself. I always try to work for myself either in work or in school. My current job pays a bit lower than average for my education level, but is as fullfilling as any job (writing racing game physics anyone?) Most importantly, I wasn't even educated/employed to code, but I do anyway and they let me. So basically I get paid 2/3 of my work's worth, but 100% of it invests in myself and for this, I'm very content.

Quote from danowat :At the risk of being lambasted by the hordes of oval haters, I thought I would post here.

Started playing a bit of Nascar 09 on the xbox, and would like to know of any sites/links with information on Nascar racing techniques, racing lines, stratagies etc etc, because at the moment, all I know about Nascar is that you put your foot down and turn left (at least on super speedways!!) .

Cheers

Go get a copy of NR2003 from Papyrus, watch the lessons. That ought to get you started.

Quote from spurri :Well i re-installed my copy of RBR onto my mac. Everything seems to work fine, but i went to setup the controls for my xbox 360 controller,
and i cant have brake and accelerate on the triggers. It says that they conflict, and now my throttle is always 50% on, any suggestions?

You can. It's just they only work combined. Try setting the "accelerator and brake" control instead of separate accelerate and brake.

It's a problem of Microsoft re-inventing a controller interface and only supporting combined triggers under legacy direct input. Or you can try (google) the XBCD drivers.

Quote from Crashgate3 :I rememeber years ago when I saw the first screenshots of IndyCar Racing thinking 'wow, that looks just like a photo!'

Just for comparison, this is that game:

It DOES look like a photo, if you squint a bit... more. The colors are correct anyway.

Quote from Ripley :Personally, my jaw dropped down for the first time when I installed a SoundBlaster16 into my Win 3.1 rig, playing Hexen, experiencing 3D audio effects !! I could hear where the enemy was !! Wow !

Quote from MAGGOT :Very good? Really? I don't think a road model with fewer polygons than a flat plane an issue, I call that an epic design flaw. I will only be getting this if they fix that flaw.

One bug I can't stand is the dynamic environmental mapping applied reversed, so going forward has your reflections going backward.

Still the road surfaces are the No. 1 fail.

Quote from Bean0 :If, like me, you have 0% Spring and Damper force set in the Control Panel options for the G25, try putting these to about 30% and you should have FFB

I like this, thanks for the heads up.

You're right. Sadly this game seems to use dynamic spring effects for ffb, instead of like LFS or RBR which send constant forces. I also find the forces near neutral to be really low, almost like a FFB deadzone. I use 20 overall and 100 spring effects in control panel. Damper seems to have no effect?

Mafia's story was...well excuse me but it was PATHETIC. I installed it recently to see how it's aged, and it turned out to be massively predictable game with bad voice acting, flat characters and a surprising touch in the end. And Mirror's Edge has NO story, it's based on it's gameplay... there's no story (Politicians bad, your sister framed, make things right is a poor setting not a story).

Mafia was mostly predictable like all the mafia movies before and after it. But I was thinking about "telling" the stories. It has a very solid storyline without incoherences. Its development coupled with the actual action part gives really good pacing and never bores the player with too much routine. (Even the "routine" mission turned into a surprise.) That, I'd rate as a good story to tell in a game, and told well.

Same with ME. Its story, although small, goes with the action very well, giving it purpose. That the gameplay mechanic can be independently enjoyable is another thing.

Quote from Thunderhead :The story? Combined with interesting, non-repetitive gameplay?

For me, "RPG" already means repetitive gameplay. I finished the original FO but quite a bit of it was fighting+looting for leveling up. If I were to look for story I'd play games like BioShock, which I did, and felt that these told stories much better than RPG's due to the concentrated pacing. Same with JediKnight, MaxPayne, Mafia and most recently, Mirror's Edge!

Since it's more FPS-like this time... Maybe I should give FO3 a try?

If God Was One of Us:

"If God had a name, what would it be
And would you call it to his face
If you were faced with him in all his glory
What would you ask if you had just one question"

I'm not religious, and I certainly don't go around telling people that God is or isn't great. Still, I can't help but fall into deep thoughts when it asked what I would ask God if I could, if just once. What's so important that I have to have God tell me? Or do I really want to know something, some truth, that's totally undisputable because that's what God told me?

"If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like heaven and in jesus and the saints
and all the prophets"

What if God was one of us?

Probably a religious person would never wonder such things?

My question is, if any of you out there have got glasses for distance and you don't necessary need to wear them all the time, do you find you do anyway?

I find it somewhat uncomfortable to read books with glasses on, otherwise I keep it on all the time. I find it's not so much wearing them that causes more near-sightedness, but wearing them (or not) and still using your eyes too much. But I'm no optician, just a guy who's worn them for 10 years.
