Where can I get in touch with a senior admin?

My LFS activity has been non-existant the last few months and I don't think I'd be able to attend, but if there's another meeting next year, I might join in.

Quote from Warper :
And what do you have experienced in your Polo? Dont really get you

While braking on motorway from +/- 110 km/h ABS kicked in, but car didn't maintain a straight line. I had to steer a bit.

Quote from Warper :Nope, actually not. If you have a ų-split situation (different friction on the sides of the car) and ABS would limit all tyres to the maximum slip, it would actually do exactly what you do not want it to do. Because the braking force on one side would be a lot higher because of the higher friction and the result would be a yaw-momentum around the vertical axis of the car, which would result in a self accelerating spin without countersteering by the driver. Thats why some ABS really suck on ų-split, for example the MK6 Ford Fiesta (even the ST i used to have) really sucked on these conditions, on several test i used all the testtrack length and more to stop. Why? Because the Ford engineers where over carefully, they let the ABS limit the brake pressure to the Minimum, to the maximum possible brake pressure without blocking the low-friction side. Result: No yaw-momentum, no need for countersteering but a very long brake distance.

Thats one of the reason there has been a ESP-2/ESP-2+ development, howerer its named in different cars. Its adding steering force to the steering shaft, so the car does the countersteering on its own, while braking as hard as possible and still going in the right direction.

Regards,
Steffen

I imagine the last thing you mentioned be implemented when parking assist becomes more common. The technologies are combined nowadays and that's the beauty of these CAN network systems. The speed/force of the countersteering is what would worry me though. Anyway... that's slightly off-topic.

As for the straightline braking... that might be the case in some cars, but definitely not always as I myself have experienced in a relatively modern VW Polo ('07 model).

Quote from BlueFlame :It is what it was designed for. You couldn't avoid the collision at a higher speed, it's designed to reduce speed as fast as possible. Therefore, designed to stop the car.

DragonCommando is right here, really!
An experienced racing driver will be able to stop a car without abs faster than a normal human with abs! That's a known fact. ABS is simply a driving aid... it helps you, the driver, still control the car under extremely heavy braking allowing you, if you're smart enough, to steer away from the danger. That's what abs is designed to do.

I am a mechanic and what you're saying is mostly correct. The car electronics nowadays are combined by what's called a can-bus networking system. So your abs/tc management will use the signal provided by your electronic gas-pedal, clutch-, and brakepedal sensors, for example.

... seems as though we're going a bit off-topic though.

Finally someone explained how an ABS system works. I really cba doing it myself. If you look at the way an ABS system works there shouldn't be any reason why it shouldn't work in reverse. The only thing that could be different would be if the manufacturer programmes into the system to ignore wheel speed differences when the speed is negative (read: reverse). That would simply be programmed into the system.
Another thing which I've noticed, is that the car's speedo isn't yet 'wired-up' to the abs system in lfs. Car speed on modern cars is calculated through the abs system. Perhaps Scawen hasn't had the time to programme that correctly, but I sure hope to see it implemented correctly one day.

edit: DrBen... what you didn't add is that the abs system isn't entirely independent to user-input. The brakepedal has a sensor attached to it. Only if the brakepedal is engaged will the abs system work.

A few LFS drivers - including myself - have 2 S2 licenses!
Some might even have more.

CLC Has Something To Celebrate

CLIS has been around for a year now and we’d like to celebrate it with you.

16th of December 2006 seems like a long time ago, for some more than others. Most people won’t have known how important that date was for CLC, but hopefully this will help you to remember.

CLIS (CityLife In-Sim) was quite revolutionary for it’s time. (The very first In-Sim application developed towards one idea; cruising. Handling all of the attributes with one single application.) Unfortunately it was riddled with bugs and despite being a popular choice for those who wanted to play LFS and not race, it lost it’s value. After a few months a large part of bugs were fixed and stability was what we had initially hoped for. The rough water wasn’t over yet. The horrendous fines for speeding, going off track (lose car) and others really hindered our credibility. A lot of people lost interest and we suffered.

When we thought matters couldn’t get any worse, they did. A few other cruisers started their own interpretation of an In-Sim cruising application and it was a success. Only a few regulars kept with us.

Then along came CLIS 2.0. We finally had a product to compete with again. It was quite clear that our reputation/popularity has taken a big blow. Other cruising servers were sprouting out all over the place and it also became apparent there was a bit of hostility towards us cruisers from other LFS players. We took no notice though. The admin team was revamped with new guys coming in and others leaving. Unfortunately Monkster couldn’t give us the commitment/time we were hoping for. JasonJ was able to take over and continue. Updates and bug fixes are constantly being worked on. It’s needed too. With so many quests there’s a lot that can go wrong.

Then we arrived at the present day. More and more people are returning to our server after realising the fines aren’t as high anymore. Our complex system of commands, quests and police-work seems to appeal to people once more. And now, the very first birthday of CLIS is nearing. At the end of November we realised what milestone was coming closer. The cogs in our miniscule humanoid brains started to churn and we came up with a fun-day for celebrating.

We’ve organised a few events for you to celebrate it with us. All fines will be reimbursed. When no event is on, regular cruising will be open. Below you’ll find the agenda with a download to a planner with a short explanation of what everything is.

All times are GMT.

16:00 – 16:30 Revenge on the Police.
16:45 – 17:15 Destruction Derby.
17:45 – 19:00 Banger Race
19:30 – 20:30 Head Bangers.
21:00 – 21:45 Jump Around.
22:15 – 23:00 CLC/CLIS Master Quiz.

Quote from thisnameistaken :If half the people who play LFS are retards, you're not going to get them into race servers even if you do away with all the stupid moron servers. They'll just go get their retard on in some other game.

To be honest I think most of them are kids who are too young to drive. Learning to drive is considered a rite of passage for some people, so they probably get a kick out of pretending they can drive, observing speed limits, turning on the indicators or whatever the hell they do.

Thanks for taking a mature stance to the whole cruising aspect of LFS. If you knew what you were talking about you might not sound so bad yourself, but that's probably too difficult and would be considered time-wasting.
A large part of the people on CLC are adults, in fact, and all admins, except one, are above 18 in CLC. So it's not got anything to do with us being retards or not being able to race.
It is infact us wanting to add something to LFS. I like to race myself, but driving slowly without crashing seems to be an art in itself also.
If you were on CLC's server you would know what's available. We've had endurance races once or twice, skin competitions, drag-racing etcetera.
Another thing some of you don't realise is that, in some cases, we're a good asset to the devs, because there have been a few instances where I've heard people saying they bought a license because of the mmorpg feeling to CLC.
Another thing that got to me is that someone said there aren't so many racing servers because most people are cruising. Well, I remember I felt the same when I got my license... which was before this new In-Sim generation appeared.

Please, you don't want to set up yet another InSim cruise server, do you?

That was definitely a good read!
Shame the author doesn't like cruising or drifting.
Perhaps he'll give them a good go one day (read: week or 2) and might learn to like them. :P

I have an old Ferrari 4005. That runs LFS quite nicely, but the build quality lacks a little. That and the fact that the support is next to non-existant for slightly older models makes me advise you to go with another brand.
I've heard good things about IBM/Lenovo, HP and Asus. The Lenovo's might cost a bit more, but they're definitely worth it.
Can action be taken against users who fake a server?
Chris P

Hey all,
This is really a message for the devs.
To cut to the chase: There's a fake Caribbean Cruise server. It uses patch W and hasn't got CLIS (CLC's In-Sim app) running. An admin there banned me quite quickly after joining and I have an idea of who it is.
What action can/cannot be taken against this server/person and does anyone know of a good way to be sure who's behind it?

TIA

Please, please, please remove that handbrake in-gear feature. What's the point in having it?

Edit: Just read above this post. The suggestion of having it as a toggle would be better, but I still feel the way it was suited most people.

Other than that, keep up the good work!

Also, Scawen, you say the realism has to stop somewhere... Why? Attention to detail is so important if you really want to make a driving simulator, imho. I'll still love the game no matter what you do to it.

Quote from AndroidXP :The looking-back-FPS-loss (pronounced when layout is loaded, I think) is in LFS since ages. Nothing to do with any of the test patches, not even with patch V itself.

So why do I experience it since I updated from V2 to V6?

Quote from Don :this fps loss when looking back happends to me very often if theres some layout on the track (but it`s been like that forever i think)

The reason why I posted it, is because I'd never experienced it before.
