I was curious to see how you went with this. Did you end up getting a g27?

I've seen G27 wheels second hand a few times in Australia go for as low as $120-150 USD so i'm sure you could find a g25 for less.
Automatic Heel-Toe?

I just got a G27. I noticed that when I have H-Shifter mode and automatic clutch setup off, I can still shift gears without clutch. It seems that when the RPM gets to the point what it would be on that gear with that speed, the game automatically shifts to that gear. This makes learning actual heel and toe system really useless since I can downshift like that without using clutch at all, just braking with left foot and tapping the gas after a downshift with my H-Shifter.

Should this happen?

LFS is still the best!

So I spent most of the holidays playing old and new racing games and testing out my new Logitech G27 playseat combo, including LFS and most of its main competitions. These some of the games that I've played.

Almost all of the ISImotor/Gmotor based games - rFactor, GT Legends, GTR2, Race07 with a bunch of expansions. These are pretty old, considerably older than latest LFS, and it shows in every possible way. Graphics, sounds are very dated. They have a lot of (repetitive) content, and even more with mods (most of which are mediocre) but cars just don't feel natural, handling and grip seems fake, you dont seem to have the feeling of tires, suspension and forces working in collaboration with each other. No 900 degree steering animations either. I even tried Simbins latest Raceroom experience teaser which is supposedly using a new engine, and if anything it feels even worse than their previous games. Not impressed. I wanted to try rFactor 2, but didn't want to spend the money. I have a feeling that ISI or simbin aren't very capable without their core team that is now known as SMS. These games are direct competitors to LFS, and asides greater number of cars/tracks there is very little reason to bother playing them.

Codemasters GRID, Dirt 3, and F1 2012. Codemasters have been making racing games for a long, long time - I still remember playing TOCA2 back in the late 90ies, and even then it was a much better sim than ISI's first game - Sports Car GT. Original Colin McRae rally was also an amazing game for its time. Unfortunately Codemasters future attempts took direction towards arcade rather than sim. And yet, with GRID, Dirt 2/3 and F1 series they made games that are good mixture of arcade and sim, with amazing graphics, jaw dropping tracks, and great fun. Nowhere near the sim like LFS, certainly not in the same category, but well worth playing. Unfortunately their upcoming games might not be as good. Dirt showdown is pure arcade, GRID 2 will not have dashboard view.

SMS games - Shift 1/2, TD: Ferrari. These are all great games. Closely related to the gMotor games, but updates, polished, with much improved graphics and proportions, tons of cars and tracks. Definitely worth playing, but don't expect them to be the same level of sim as LFS, they are "simcade". I also tried SMS latest pCARs, which is supposed to be more of a simulation. It has potential but right not its just way too unfinished. Menu system is buggy and confusing, game has serious performance issues even on a powerful PC, and the only cars available are obnoxiously fast purpose built race cars that are hard to control.

Biggest surprise... I got a 3 month subscription for the very hyped up iRacing. This game is widely regarded as the ultimate, most realistic race sim out there. It is made by the same guys that were once Papyrus, and were responsible for game series such as IndyCar racing, Nascar Racing, and Grand Prix Legends. Even though I'm probably in the minority here, but I never found Papyrus games to be very good. I though ISI's Nascar Thunder was better then Papyrus Nascar, and I don't even like ISI games all that much... or Nascar. This is what I have observed so far in the game.
1) The graphics are lame. No better than LFS. Granted, this is not very important for a racing sim, but a lot of people kick LFS for its dated graphics.
2) Propotions just look wrong. When you're sitting inside the car, it appears as if your car is the width of the entire track. Its very difficult to judge the distance - how close you are to the car next to you, how close you are to the edge of the track, etc. On the contrary, in LFS proportions are done just right, better than any other game.
3) No 900 degree steering animations! The game reacts to 900 degree input, but in car animations are limited to 360 degrees. This is just pathetic.
4) Poor force feedback, feels very unnatural and artificial.
5) No feeling of speed. This is a problem that haunted even the original Nascar game. Your engine can be screaming, car accelerating at very fast rate, you could be going close to 200mph, but if you shut off the sound and don't look at the speedo, just look at the road ahead of you - it doesn't feel that you are going fast or accelerating fast at all.
6) Physics don't feel anywhere as natural as LFS either. With LFS you know when you are pushing your car to the limit, and with iRacing you get no feedback at all, very little warning before you lose control.

This is why I simply love LFS. I've been playing it since 2003 and I'm never getting bored of it. It doesn't have much content, but it has great variety. Theres every type of car from a slow street car to F1 car, and you can adjust almost every setting, and with unofficial addons you can simulate almost every type of vehicle out there, from Nascar to Tractor. Tracks are limited but also have great variety, from drag to offroad. And the physics, the menus, the controls, the driving feel are just so excellent. Keep up the good work guys!

I offered him $125 + postage, now I'm waiting for a response...
edit//: Two guys sent me emails, each offering one G27 for $200, so I'll probably buy a G27.

Can't configure Wheel

Hi,

Just coming back around to check things out after a long time away (wasn't around much to begin with)

Anyway, downloaded and installed the most recent build. I can't get my G27 setup.

In the Options screen it says "four controllers found", which makes sense, I have the G27, Fanatec CSP's, an SST shifter, and a DS button box.

I can assign the CSP's and shifter, but the wheel doesn't seem to be recognized. That quarter circle arc at the bottom of the screen with the red square, that square just sits static. When I click "wheel" on the options screen, and turn it, none of the sliders move/respond on the right (like how pressing the pedal levers does)

Windows recognizes the wheel and in the Logitec profiler, everything is as expected.

I've reinstalled and gone through the guided setup twice now.

Any ideas?

thanks

It's a common problem. Though, my G27 has got more then that, yet it's pretty much a brand new one.

Some peeps haven't encountered this problem, so meh. There are just a few lucky ones out there, lal.

Had that issue alot with the dfp and rarely with my g27. Always happened under heavy countersteering when drifting or sudden wheel jerk saves on low wheel locks like 240

Quote from MadCatX :Can you reproduce the crash every time?

After the first crash, LFS runs fine.

It's still not working but now the problem seems to be the outgauge port(yes my ports are fine, 30000 for outgauge). The led lights stay frozen to either "all lit" or to "flashing".

In this log i've run the game 3 times, 1st with crash and 2nd, 3rd that run ok.

The plan is to make the controlling application launch LFS automatically, but I need to sort out all possible problems before I begin with implementing some extra functionality.

Making it work like it was before would be good, you could simply make a "list" with each version's reversed address and load the correct one based on lfs version.

Thank you for the feedback.

Can you reproduce the crash every time? Does it happen even when your G27 is disconnected? If you start LFS without the controlling application running, do you also get the crash? Do you have any other gaming gadgets DirectInput might be picking up?
I'll look into this but ATM I have some other business to take care of.

I had one Momo Racing before (in the beginning of 2010) and it also had this problem.

But then I bought the G25 and later on then G27. Those two wheels worked perfect without any problems.

That's not a Momo problem. That is a faulty wheel. It has happened to G25, G27, Momo....

It happens when a gear slips on its shaft due tou force feedback forces. You don't need to worry about that, is not a common issue. If it were Logitech would have stopped to sell those wheels.

How do those dollareuro prices work. Do all this use this 1$ for 10 Euro course which is of course entirely wrong? It has gone down in price considerably but honestly I wonder if I still wouldn´t find it worth the money when it was 150-200 euro more

I played with mine for a some weeks now. Got it with the ferrari wheel. Just got home a 320 mm standard wheel but awaiting an adapter for it.

It´s no small step up from a G27 in term of feel and use of materials. I would say it´s more bang for buck really however if you are just after fast lap times the DFP GT and G27 is very easy going wheels. You can max out the force feedback and it´s still never enough to overpower you. But it certainly feel like a toy wheel in comparison. I thought the pedals was quite decent but they feel as plasticky like the wheel in comparison.

Not perfect though. It´s quite noisy even though it´s belt driven also before the fan kicks in. I find it a bit annoying that you have to leave the wheel powered for 30 minutes after a session before the wheel cooled itself enough to stop the fan. Maybe if the fan would start at the same time as you start playing with the wheel this process would go faster?? With the torque of this wheel I can see it´s not really possible to do without a fan to bad they couldn´t fit a larger more quiet one though.

However when using headphones it certainly appear quiet to me. Particularly compared to the G27 which is sometimes quiet but frequently get those crazy clank clank clank noise that sounds like something just got loose in the wheel entirely.

Also it could perhaps be a bit smoother being a belt drive. I have read it uses a toothed belt it´s about what it feels like occasionally. But again it´s just something that don´t make it absolutely perfect it´s still a lot better then G27 in term of precision and feel. But I do recall the Turbo S for example being slightly smoother though it don´t at all had the ffb capabilities of the T500RS.

Yeah, I realise noone cares and I better shut up -__- . My signature says enough.

But I might say that I added FF and it feels much better now (speaking of G27 ofc).. Also a screen of my Scania R500 Topline.

Well after a good few years saying I was gonna buy a wheel.. I finally did.
Got a G27 and 2 (F1 2010, GT5) PS3 games for £165 + P£P
Don't have a PS3 so probably re-sell the games giving me even more money off the wheel

Its just under a year old, but had less than 10-15 hours use and sat in its box the rest of the time

So.. Avoid Tesco lol. TBH The table I have is full metal frame and doesn't move at all shake/wobble but the tops are glass and only 3mm or so thick. If I could source some cheap or free wood I could possibly bolt that on using the rubber mount holes then instead of the glass it would be strong wood
I get paid hopefully Wednesday and get the G27 ordered, that way I can see if the desk is suitable until my next pay and purchase a sim chassis.
(early Christmas to me, from me. If only we all still lived with parents to buy everything..eh? )
