I'm with Bawbag and thisnameistaken. Your mistake for hitting the tires and your fault for not letting him through after your crash. Also your fault in starting the stupid bashing, which doesn't take anything away from his stupid wrecking.

Quote from SamH :Watch out for a PM

Assuming you PMed him about how to get the ban file, that's exactly what I was talking about. It would be helpful IMO if the ban file and instructions for admins would be more visible. I know your intention is not to maintain a global ban list, but how about considering changing your intentions?

Is there a mechanism where server admins can automatically synchronize/update the ban list with a central "wreckers barricade" (or other) list?

Also, IMHO it would help if the mentioned barricade site had some guidelines and apps that help to update the ban list on servers, along with instructions for server admins on how to use it and what text to add to the welcome screen of the server (i.e.: [This server uses the wreckers barricade ban list])

Naturally, such a global ban list would have to be reviewed manually for every user that enters it, because it may mean that the user will not be able to race on most servers around.

Mouse isn't bad at all, and I used to drive with a mouse for a while. Then I got a wheel. It took some time to get used to it, but then I did, and the PBs started comming. Bottom line, mouse is good, but wheel is better. The only real issue IMHO with a mouse is the on/off of the gas/break, especially with the formula cars. I know some ppl use some mouse configuration to use the Y axis of the mouse to control the gas and/or breaks. Never tried it myself though.

Quote from alland44 :This nigth, I drove on So long, in the Xfg. One guy came out, because he jumped to the pits, and was about the same speed as me.

He was lapped, but was so close to my car, that it was annoying. I had to concentrate about him, instead of trying to gain a position in the race.

It`s so god damned sad, that people can`t let the race leaders, battle out for the podium, when they are lapped, so god damned clearly
If this happens on my server, I will ban such a driver for at least a year

I you jump to the pits, because of a bad start, then you have absolutely no rigths in the ongoing race. If you do things like this, and rejoin the race - Then the racer have to move over and make sure he doesn`t interact with the ongoing race

WHY CAN`T PEOPLE LEARN THAT ??

Actually, in Don's tire deformation slowmo you can see it quite clearly. At least IMHO, it looks quite excessive.

went through the threads earlier, but didn't have an account to post. would someone post there about the easiness of going online, including the ease of sending setups? it's a killer combo IMHO. didn't see it mentioned on the threads there.

Quote from Vain :Another factor is the car itself. Two years ago I had a Porsche 944 which I mention because it was called the limousine among the Porsches back in it's days. Cruise-speed was 180-200km/h (but seldomly reached on public roads due to traffic), very silent, no vibration, steering response even nicer than at low speeds.
A few months ago I drove a BMW E30 and the thing felt excessively uncomfortable above 140km/h. Huge wind noise, very low directional stability, excessive impact from cross wind. I felt like it'd be a good idea to just stay clear of the fast lane. A thought the 944 never gave me.
I guess what stops such impressions from developing in LFS is the evenness of the track. Perfect tarmac, no wind, no specific source of wind-noise, adjustable toe-in and castor, etc. And of course the lack of g-forces. You just can't feel the car being twitchy. Some FWD-setups feel pretty strange when you play with the steering wheel on the straights, but otherwise there're few things to give you an indication of what the car is currently trying to do.

And btw: So Classic is kind of special because it has one of the very few bumpy bits of tarmac in LFS. In standard direction, on the exit of the chicane there actually are a few bumps. We should ask the UNESCO to declare it LFSWorld heritage.

Vain

The tarmac isn't perfect actually. It has invisible bumps that affect the suspensions. Same kind of invisibility as the bumps on the kerbs.

And regarding SO classic, you should have seen it in S1. You went there with the MRT and until you mastered it, every chicane was a gamble so eric moderated the rails on the chicane entry. I do like it better now

the sense of speed comes in part due to the excitment, fear and real forces on your body when u drive a real car. it doesn't happen in lfs because there isn't a real fear of losing control. also, when u get used to it, 200kph, even on a bike, doesn't seem that fast. it's just.. faster than 120kph

also, as others said, FOV, size/configuration of the monitor/s and virtual distance of the eyes from the ground has part in it too. and also the force-effect-on-head-movement slider. sound plays a part too. it's the immersion after all. and on a computer the multiple-sensory immersion is less than in real life...

As I said on my other post, without doing something about the level of racing there, it doesn't really matter. It used to be a great server that attracted a lot of good racers, and now it's just impossible to race there. People pit out right into the lead pack, almost never respecting blue flags, a lot of crashes etc. If you want the server to succeed then you need to make sure someone is moderating it properly. Other than that, and if you want to keep it as a FOX server (would be a good decision IMHO) then all medium/small tracks without too many elevation changes or fast and "edgy" chicanes would fit. Some aston tracks, blackwood, westhill. Count out fern bay club and aston tracks with the steep down/up hill. They will surely cause mayham in every "amatures" race. the other fern bay tracks are also problematic due the fast chicanes which are sort of a gamble for the less experienced racers. Just my $0.02

The most problematic issue I see with the redline servers is that there's no moderation and the racing level and respect towards other racers are among the lowest around. Shame really since it used to be quite a lot of fun.

Nothing against people talking about it, just making sure they know it's falling onto deaf ears.

Well... I think that a good idea would get noticed, even if it's on this thread. Life just isn't black and white. Though I guess the warning is in place. To some extent

Quote from SamH :Before we romp down the road of suggestions for improvement (regardless of how good the suggestion is), it's probably a good time to remind ourselves that suggested improvements to the engine sound editor are as near guaranteed to be discussions among ourselves only. Scawen's been quite clear that he's not - until further notice - about to listen to, or discuss, this feature of LFS.

I don't want to sound like a party pooper.. I just think it's important not to lose track of the basic premise that this thread exists on.. that the conversation doesn't and won't involve Scawen

I think you're a bit too harsh it's about people and ideas afterall. If a good idea comes up, I don't think it'll be ignored just because this is an unsupported feature. The discussion should go on, as long as people remember than it might advance in different directions.

btw, u did the stcc intro didn't u? quite nice

They did have an extensive comparison of the BF1 in LFS and the one of rFactor. rFactor came on top btw, although they didn't trash LFS. Not a bad article.

If anyone does write an article about LFS, I seriously suggest using pics from Don's slowmo vids. Especially the one where you can see the tire deformations. On the LX car

Quote from (SaM) :I for one wish every S2 server that has an S1 compatible car/track combo set the server to S1 mode. As, indeed, every S2 AND S1 player can see the host and join. This would be beneficial for the lack of S1 servers and gives S1 players a meet S2 players.

I think this should be automatic by the server. There shouldn't be a need to do this manually. Especially now that most people do use S2, and I imagine that those who still use S1 do that because they don't have enough money to buy S2. Let them join the party if it's only a checkbox on the sesrevr.

Just for the record, eventhough it wasn't exposed by the devs intentionally, I think it's welcome that some features are announced in "unsupported" way, such that people can play with them, and maybe some good things would come out of those. Of course, a mechanism should be in place to prevent online racing with physics modifications or other race-related stuff. Maybe even limit all kind of mods to offline racing only, but it's a welcome addition with the proper disclamer IMHO.

Should be interesting

Another way to get the same effect is by using engine breaking instead of the breaks. The result is the same, more weight on the front, therefore, more grip. Advantage of this technique is that you don't need to manage 2 feet into the corner with gas and breaks. I guess mouse users can utilize it too, but I haven't tried it with the mouse. Just lift the gas foot gently into a turn, and make sure that u reach it with enough RPM such that u can actually use it for slow down.

just for the record, athlon xp 2500+ is fine for lfs, i have 1G ram and fx5600 ultra gfx card on XP SP1 and i usually get above 50-60fps. also, i have an onboard sound (realtek) and no cracking sounds. of course, YMMV.

To be on a positive note, I _think_ that starting on U30 I no longer have (very) low FPS around and towards the grid area (regardless of number of cars around). In fact, the FPS seems to be much more consistent (and high) across the entire track, which is a very good thing did anything change in this regard?

Cheers for the frequent paches and improvements

I second the FPS issue. I used to get 40-70 FPS and now (somewhere during the U patches) I get as low as 10 on the grid (definately used to be higher) and 20-30 at best during a race. I definately didn't change the graphics settings, and even more, I reduce everything to the minimum CPU/GPU load, and it's still very low.

I have Athlon-XP 2500+, Asus A7N8X-X, 1G RAM DDR 400, BFG Asylum (FX5600 Ultra 128M), on XP Pro SP1.

I always keep my PC clean without viruses/trojans/etc (and cpu and network activity on idle is practically zero)

Something strange: when I turn OFF hardware vertex shading, i'm actually getting higher FPS... :/

Quote from Hankstar :Tabs rule! I've always hated having to muck about with a dozen open windows using IE.

I switch between Opera and Firefox atm. For a while I was just using Firefox but now and then, for a reason I can't discover, it freaks and crashes - and when it does, all my friggin bookmarks vanish! WTF? It could be that my PC is old and crap, but this started happening way back when my PC was ninj4. Oh well.

Currently the only thing I don't like about Opera is that you can't set multiple home pages like with Firefox. Apart from that it's the bomb. Either way, I'd kick IE to the kerb if I were you. I have to use it at work everyday, and every day I'm reminded why I hate it.

?? bahh, that sounds really bad (vanishing bookmarks). I've had firefox crash occasionally (not recently though), but I always use it with like 20 tabs open, loading and scrolling... i make it work hard . anyway, i've never heard of the "vanishing bookmarks" issue before, and i'm somewhat involved with firefox (you can even get an extension i've written by following my singature). I suggest to copy your bookmarks file somewhere, delete the profile directory, and start with a fresh install. I really think the bookbark issue will not return, or else it's a Data-Loss bug (highest severity) which's still open...

Nope, I don't have simple track off, but that's how it always was, so even if I could get a speedup from turning it on, it was fast regardless. However, I did have Haze On.... bahhh.. I clearly remember not touching the graphics settings for quite a while now.. and I definately didn't touch the haze settings. Could it be that it got turned on "automatically" when I used one of the patches? It always could be the case that I accidently clicked it though..

Thx again.. should have gone through the graphics setting first... eventhough I didn't remember changing them. Anyway, turned haze off and it seems fast again thx.

PS.
Do people actually use this option??
