If it's primarily for sim-racing, and you're not interested in other applications of VR, then I'd go for a Vive Rift. From the comparison review's I've read, it is apparently lighter and more comfortable than the Vive for long sessions, has less of a screen-door effect, and is cheaper as you only need the headset and camera.

For sim-racing, most of the time is spent with your eyes forward looking as far up the road as you can, and you swivel your head to glance at mirrors or blind spots, so the higher density of pixels in the middle of the viewing area might be of benefit to you there.

This is just looking at the hardware/cost side of things, before you get to the software and any privacy concerns.

I'm recommending my dad get a new Vive Rift for the reasons above to replace his DK2, but his PC literally has nothing at all on it except iRacing, Live For Speed, Assetto Corsa, and a Chrome browser that's used for nothing but launching iRacing. It is used for nothing but those sims, and doesn't even have it's own monitor or a place to sit with a keyboard & mouse, so I'm not so fussed about the Oculus bloatware and the statistics it may collect.

EDIT: Yes, I did mean to say Rift!

Direct drive wheel + pedals (loadcell br) for $600 (shipment included) -Feel VR

Hello,
I didn't saw anyone posting it here, so i'll do it. If someone wants to buy new wheel in the near future, he may want to wait little bit for that: http://feelvr.game/. It is prototype of DD wheel, not yet released, but it seems like it will be a good deal. For a price of estimated $400, you could be able to buy direct drive wheel build on small MiGe, so comparable with small OSW, but for less than half that price, and ready to go, without any building. Just need pedal set and shifter. It's not yet known where they will be releasing it, so it's not 100% sure. But i myself decided to buy new wheel, and my first choice was T300 alcantara, but after reading reports about it's durability, i've started reading about OSW and DD wheels in general, and then i've found that Feel VR. I decided to wait till they'll be releasing it, since it seem super worth, and regular wheels like logitech thrustmaster or even fanatec, are like toys, compared to DD. So just wanted to let you know, that something like this exists, and you may want to consider it before throwing your money on new wheel Smile.

PS. They also have cheap motion simulator but, same as wheel, you cannot buy it yet. Still it can be worth waiting Smile

Mouseman is quite OK, I think he writes expressions in his own way (many hours on Teamspeak, had him on Facebook but I want to get rid of Facebook this year so I am deletingdeleting.. Done with that nonsense company).

On paper things can "sound" different then in real. But suggesting to others what they should or should not do is not really a good idea (like trying this silly VR environment). People can easily decide for themselves when something becomes a waste of energy or if it is still fun to have it on the mind. I don't like to have stuff running while almost nobody gives a sh* about anymore but maybe racing is coming back.. Some full AMG (GTR) and/or FOX servers would be nice... 24/7 .. Like it used to be, long long ago.

I only have the DK2, but it really was as easy as plug'n'play.

Make sure your Rift is plugged in properly, Start LFS, go to Options/view, select 3D, select Oculus VR, sit comfortably in your driving position and click the first option (can't remember what it says off the top of my head - use tracking, something, something...). You're in. Go play.

As far as VR experiences go, there's not many that beat LFS for instant gratification.

Enjoy Smile

I wonder if that FOV is horizontal or vertical. So far, VR headset developers have insisted on supporting more vertical FOV than horizontal, although in real life you can see further horizontally than vertically.

It would be nice to have more peripheral vision. Unfortunately there is a battle between peripheral vision and resolution at the centre.

Anyway, in theory LFS should run on the LG's device without any changes.

I see - I'm playing offline at the moment against the AI so I wasn't quite sure as to whether the game is meant to take me back to a 'new game' screen automatically at the end.

Yes, it's very good in VR - great VR support too. I would go as far as saying the support is one of the best out of all of the VR racers - it was just the pedal setup that was messing me up and that's Logitech's fault and not mine! Big grin

Thanks for the replies...

@beNom - I've tried auto and manual transmission and I'm using the stock car and stock setup - both same result and the moment I come to the first slope at about 10-15mph it comes to a stop and rolls backwards no matter what I do with the clutch/gear selection/acceleration.
I don't really know what setting the pedal axes is or what it does but I will look for a solution.

@ped7g - I get full revs right to the limit when I press gas pedal right down and the engine makes loud roar when I do it and the tank if I remember rightly shows about half full - from the start of the race I don't get further than a few hundred metres as I hit a slope can't get up it! But yes, I'm going to look at the pedal axes! I think I have some learning to do...

It's a very nice looking game on my Vive - tried Project cars but Live for Speed seems much better visually in VR than what Project Cars is in VR. Thanks both - I'll try axes tomorrow and will write back with the result - I assume the axes are a Live for Speed setting and not a Logitech setting.
Help? Car won't speed up!

Hi,

I've downloaded the free version to try out with my HTC Vive and I've hit an issue. I can get the game to work with my Vive and visually it looks good in VR, however, when I put my foot down on my Logitech G920 pedal the game gives an audio roar to indicate acceleration but the car only moves at the most at about 10mph no matter how hard I press the gas pedal. When I go up a slope the the acceleration dies out totally and the car rolls backwards down the hill until it stops and then it won't move at all! Am I missing something obvious in settings or is the came so realistic it is imitating running out of gas? Smile

Quote from PeterN :"x (un)blocked messages" is an indicator, no?

As Johneysvk said, it can get lost in chat very easily - especially mid-race when you are concentrating. While in VR, it can be difficult to keep track of chat, as it can feel even further out of your field of view, thanks to the lens-blur toward the edges of your vision. If I'm locked into a good battle, I may not pay any attention to the chat at all for several minutes...

yes I only use VR so the monitor doesn't matter.

I agree that the whole 'car' moving is better, but having the front frame fixed actually makes for some great g-force simulation i.e on crashing etc.

Is probably a good tool to start, you can set plenty of options while inside the HMD.

The supersampling one in particular is the one you're looking for, with LFS you should be easily able to set it to 2.0 I guess.

cheers Troy I will check out the Open VR then, I tried changing the INI files for super sampling manually but it doesn't seem to work (I think historically it did, but Vive changed it?).

Can anyone confirm with SS set at 2.0 the simulator improves graphically with Vive?

The F8 command is "/rift reset". Maybe Scawen can extend it with parameter to avoid the dialog (if there is one.. I don't have VR, so I can't try myself how exactly it works, sorry)? Try the "Contact us" in case there will nobody helpful here for some time. Also there are specialized LFS threads on particular Oculus/HTC forums I believe, but can't provide the links, as I don't visit them. Just try some quick search for "Scawen" user, he's probably using that everywhere.

Quote from Flame CZE :Pressin F8 should reset the VR, but I don't know if that shows the pop up window or not.

But how do you want it to be done when there's no keyboard connected?

Thanks for the input. Pressing F8 pops up a menu where you have to make a choice for how to reset the camera. This menu cannot be navigated by keyboard shortcuts. The only way to navigate it is to use a mouse or the VR crosshair and a button on the controller. None of those two options are available to me.

For my setup to work, i need to be able to navigate everything through commands or keystrokes that the PC receive remotely.

The spacebar becomes your left mouse button when the VR crosshairs are visible.

Hit the spacebar when you have the VR crosshairs over the option you want to select.

edit: sorry - it wasn't clear that you were operating via a remote machine.

Always use VR - reset camera position

Hi,

Is there any way to make the vr reset function like on other games where you just hit a key and it will reset your view?

As it is now, it will popup a menu where you always have to select what type of reset to perform. I always want it to use one of those as i need all controls to be available as keyboard strokes. Selecting something in this popup is not possible with the keyboard.

Using buttons on my controller is not an option and theres no keyboard connected to the PC.

hello all, I just bought s2 license today mainly because everyone says how good VR implementation is in LFS. Unfortunately looking to the side you can see an interruption in the movement of things like trees or whatever is not at the same speed of the car. Read somewhere it was related to the response frequency of the physics being 100hz and the oculus rift being 90hz. Is there a possible solution for this from the developers? or is it a lost case? thanks

Yep, can confirm it too. Just bought S2 license because I thought VR implementation was perfect but then I realized there was this judder (or whatever the name is) problem. A real shame vr is plagued by so many issues...

Scawen, I don't know if this is the proper place, but I can help you with the galician translation, user louBaN was the responsable for that in the past, but his last connection date was in 2011, and we still have some features of the VR in english in the official patch. Just let me know what files i have to translate.

Thanks for the reports. Eric's following the thread and fixing the reported issues.

On the coding side...

Quote from mbutcher :Is this a bug, Scawen?: When you go into Free View via the escape menu, the chat goes slightly transparent. When you go into Free View via shift+u directly, the chat stays opaque.

Good find, I'll have a look at that.

Quote from K0Z3L_43V3R :Tested, yes I'm getting same false IS_OBH packets when driving over kerbs. They all have 0 index.

Thanks, I'll see what's causing this. I guess it's because the kerbs are 3D objects but I suppose they should count as ground rather than objects.

Quote from BeNoM :I still can't figure out why the LX VOB file was changed Uhmm

I fixed the LX vob which had some holes in the lower LOD mesh that caused holes in the shadows. Also there was a stray polygon visible, a lower front part of the roof canvas that was still visible from the inside when the roof was down. It was noticeable in VR.

Quote from Scawen :"I want to race but there aren't enough people online". Seriously, if you want to race, get online! Big grin

They do but everywhere else but LFS. This is how online communities work, a selective group of people decide what they do (leaders), followed by others. And these others attract again others, which, you might guess.. Attract another group of others.

But, leaders don't see potential anymore in Live for Speed. Not talking about myself now, I am talking about the aliens, the racing teams, the racing legends. Logical, it is the last eight (!) years the same old story. The focus the very last years wasn't even on content anymore but unexpectedly on a very expensive niche VR market. At the same time the concept of online racing the last years became more and more common, there are a lot of new environments to choose from if you fancy some online racing and sadly it is not Live for Speed. Yes, LFS has pretty realistic car handling, even with the stone age tire physics but people want to drive real cars, real tracks and not having the idea they drive on the surface of a snooker table. (Ever tried AC? At least you get the idea you drive on a road surface there).

If no major content changes are going to take place (cars/tracks/tire physics) this situation as what is happening the last years will stay. Only keeping a handful soon-is-something-big-going-to-happen believers, behind. And cruisers, cruisers are OK.. But not really the real deal, they think driving towards each other is a good idea.
off line drags

Hi, I am trying to set up for several indoor shows and feature drag racing with 2 or more players. Can I do this off line by linking two pc's together? I will not have access to internet at these shows. I need the most simple game and it needs to be off line. Can I do this with live for speed? I would like to stay away from VR and have a large monitor for each racer. I would like to link the racers together on the pc. IDEAS??
