Quote from Stang70Fastback :What I hate most of all is this stupid rule about how if you crash you need to get off the track (Shift + S) immediately so that other people don't have to avoid you...

...WHAT?!?!! For a racing sim where people complain about the physics problem involving the right-rear plookie bar that stabilizes the neutronium differential providing the torque split, i find it amazing that they all insist that a crashed car disappear from the track as quickly as possible. How the hell is that realistic?

Just because LFS is a sim, doesn't mean we can't have the things the way we'd like them to be. Okay, it may not be realistic, but if this was physically possible in real life racing then you can bet that it would be implemented post haste. There have been countless deaths in racing from collisions with stationary vehicles. Why not remove this factor in a sim when we have the opportunity to do so?

Personally I Shift-S when I feel my car is in a position where it could cause chaos later on. If its out of the way I tend to leave it for a bit to add drama to the race...

Quote from XVII :A "football" match in racing sound a bit more fun

Perhaps there should be more of those servers around

I'm just saying it would be fun for more rough race matches to be around...

Sheesh, more uptight about honor than winning it seems

Sheesh, I wasn't trolling. I was making a valid point worth considering. Get that through your thick skull.

But your point ISN'T valid. LFS is an online racing sim, with a community that want to race in a manner as close to the real thing as possible. This does not include using other cars as barriers if you want to make a pass. If you want to do this, do so in one of the plethora of other racers (PGR on xbox live being a good example of an online crashfest).

What you don't understand is that people in LFS (on the whole) try to race cleanly and fairly, and it is from this that they take their enjoyment from the game. Deliberate crashing and shoving in LFS is as detrimental to others' gaming experience as coming across someone using an aimbot or wallhack in a FPS.

Have some consideration for fellow gamers and play fair.

Quote from Mazz4200 :

Anyway, i'm busy downloading Armed Assault atm, so we'll see if it's much cop, seems to have had mixed reviews....

Apparently Armed Assault is one of those games with a promising engine but poorly implemented and buggy single player campaign. However, it is the spiritual successor to Operation Flashpoint, and as such will have a strong modding community.

One to get if you want to get involved in the mods, community and online aspects, but not so good for a simple single player romp.

Quote from thisnameistaken :Well I just finished Episode 1 (which I didn't buy - someone gave it to me). First... 90% or so I got really annoyed with that girl constantly patronising me. There were a couple of decent gags (Barney's crowbar provision, Alyx's "Is it dead? Why don't you hit it with your crowbar to make sure.") but not enough to offset the general annoyingness of Story Propulsion Girl.

The finale was suitably big and explosion-packed I suppose, for a game that is basically an action movie with mouse-waving required, but I was tired of being led from set piece to set piece long before I arrived at that most convoluted of set pieces. In fact I was tired of them by the time I finished Half-Life 2, which is why I never bought Episode 1. Damn that guy who gave it to me for nothing!

Wow, talk about a jaded individual...! You get a game for free (a critically acclaimed one at that) and you still don't seem happy. Perhaps you should take a break from FPS's in general, as I can't see anything on the horizon that would change your mind.

Cheer up, you only live once. You're even frowning in your avatar for chrissakes!

Its obviously 'Hamenchips'.
So, what do you think of the Orange Box?

Well, the Orange Box was released over Steam yesterday, and I'm sure that quite a few forum members have played and enjoyed its contents by now. Here are my opinions on the new titles in the pack, namely Episode Two and Portal.

Episode 2:- Amazing. Some excellent firefights and gorgeous outdoor settings. The combine hunter makes for an intimidating and formidable opponent. The storyline and dialogue are top-notch, with an excellent ending making you pine for Episode 3 already. The game reaches a crescendo with one of the most exhilarating pitched battles I have ever played, and IMO is destined for a place in gaming folklore. It is a tad short (just over 6 hours for me), but what is there is tight, enjoyable and gripping, with none of the fluff that is found in many other FPS's. I won't say too much more as I don't want to ruin it for you.

Portal:- Well, for what is essentially a 'freebie', I was pleasantly surprised with Portal. It is a puzzle game at heart, with you using a handheld portal generator to negotiate several 'lab tests'. What I didn't expect was the dark humour that the game is suffused with, from the robotic female voice egging you on, to the graffitti found on walls later on. Fantasitically, it manages to weave its own story to fit around the half life universe. It also boasts one of the funniest and most memorable ending sequences ever. It took me about 3 hours to play through, but I still have the advanced levels and the challenges to go. I defy anybody not to get sucked in and enjoy this game.

So, thats my opinion, what do you all think?

Quote from srdsprinter :Please, he's "earned" the no. 1 spot on Mclaren?

He's "earned" it by being Ron Dennis' love child.

He's been incredibly fortunate/spoiled to have the opportunity he's got. The only really special thing is the ridiculous amount of luck he's had; when was the last time you saw a CRANE pull someone out of the gravel in F1?

Credit where credits due -> incredibly spoiled kid in incredibly fast car with incredibly good luck*

*till he found the world's smallest gravel trap.

Do you really think that Hamilton is the only driver in F1 who is only there because he got lucky? There are many talented drivers out there who will never get a shot at F1 because of a lack of money or contacts. Face it. Every driver in F1 today got where they are because they had luck on their side at some point.

It just seems that Hamilton's route into F1 has been heavily publicised, whereas this is not the case for other drivers. I'm sure if you look closer at their route into F1 they will have some striking similarities.

Now, I'm not saying that talent isn't involved, of course it is. What I am saying is that talent alone is not enough to get to the big time in motorsport these days..

Your from Sheffield. I can't comprehend you speak another language.
Go stick to making Knifes

I'm in Sheffield too, and I'm sure I come across far more clearly than a lot of your so called 'observations'..

Oh, and if you want to start a debate on language then perhaps you should learn that the plural of knife is knives...

Back on topic:- I think Hamilton just plain messed up, but TBH he was due a mistake.

Quote from felplacerad :Andrew, if you'd like an admin to have a look at either, or both incidents just drop me a message with the details.

Cheers.

Don't really think theres much you can do really. It was an inexperienced racer who lost the back end twice, first in the chicane and then again the last turn. Unfortunately I was in the wrong place on both occasions and got caught up, but I doubt there was any malice on the other driver's part.

Simple solution:-

1. Ban permanently anyone who abuses you on your server, particulary those who threaten you with removing your S2 (lol..!).
2. If these people complain, refer them to us.
3. Sit back and relax as we rip them to shreds. (Its what several of the forum members do best.. )

Excellent combo... Smile

Looking forward to next weeks race already. Unfortunately I had my race ruined tonight in the first few laps (by the SAME person! He later quit), but these things happen. (I wasn't saying that at the time, I was furious Big grin )

Loved the superpole qualifying. I was so nervous that I put in a disappointing lap but it sure got the adrenaline flowing. Thumbs up

Thanks for the great work on organising the races, see you next week.

Quote from BlueFlame :It's pretty obvious you do... Go carry on hoping that the English football team is good enough to win the world cup again.

IMHO the problem with the England football team echoes that of English society as a whole. We beleive that we are better than we actually are. If we could just step back and see ourselves in perspective to other EU countries we may actually get somewhere.

Having said that, I am grateful the the opportunities living in the Uk has allowed me, and I wouldn't want to be from anywhere else.

Back on topic, I feel that Alonso should be lucky to get a drive in a pedal-cart next season after how he has acted. Lewis is a great driver who cannot win. If he wins in a competitive car, its the car doing the job. If he loses in a less competitive car, its his driving ability at fault...

Quote from Kryten :It's about £26-£27 when VAT is added. It's not available a week earler in the UK, the Orange Box is released to everyone on October the 10th. Plus, if you already have HL2 and HL2:Ep1 you will be able to give them away to a friend.

AND you get Peggle Deluxe too. A 10-level puzzle game based on the Orange Box games.

I forgot to take tax into account.. Oh well.

BTW, you misunderstood me. I said it was released online a week earlier THAN the UK. Play.com have it listed for the 19th for the boxed copy.

Quote from Bawbag :I've been playing it the past few days, it's quite good for a beta and the general gameplay is good.

However, on the lowest of low settings it still runs like dog poop, although there is somethings you can change in order to make it run better and smoother which I must try.

Athlon 3800 2.00ghz dual core
2gb ram 800mhz
ATi X1300 512mb poop

When I say poop I just mean in extream situations your really disadvantaged, but it doesn't spoil the game that much.

(Btw for those of you wondering if you can play it or not, the Beta doesn't support dual yet so my guess is most normal machines should play it ok)

Hmmm. Same system as mine except I have an X1950 Pro 256mb. I'm expecting it to run ok-ish on low-medium settings, but I am a bit hesitant to get it as I know it'll only make me want to upgrade. My system isn't really that old and I'd like to get a bit more life out of it yet...

Quote from wien :Yep. You get it by pre-ordering "The Orange Box" (HL2, HL2:Ep1&2, Team Fortress 2 and Portal). Not sure if you get to take part in the beta if you just buy the game by itself, but you probably do. Never really looked.

Great, thanks! Seems like its time to buy the orange box then, doesn't it? Only comes to £22 here, and it seems like it will be made available online a week earlier than the UK as well. What am I waiting for??!

(I already have HL2 and Ep1, but hey ho...)

TBH I think the better drivers DO crash less often. Looking at the stats of some of the fast drivers on CTRA, they all have below average yellow flag %'s, with a lot of racers below 10%.

Whether thats because they are more aware of whats around them, or simply because they start ahead of the main pack is open to interpretation.
