Its a shame Darwin didn't have M&M's at his disposal.. Imagine how much more he could have accomplished!

Quote from Voytech :Thanks for this guide. I stumbled upon it a bit late, as I have been driving for a while now. It would have been very useful back when I started.

Anyway, I just wanted to add just one thing that has helped me tremendously.

Find a "tutor".
Scout for empty servers with just one or two drivers that are faster than you are. Ask for help! Most drivers will take it as a honorable thing to do to help you out. Ask for their setup. You'll have fun and they will too. Ask them to do a few slower laps with you on their tail (not too close, maybe 1s behind). Find a pace that you're comfortable with. Don't try to pass them, just imitate their lines and brake points. Once you get the hang of that, ask them to speed up a bit. Repeat. If you find yourself spinning out or going off track, ask them to switch places. Have them follow you for a few laps and they will surely tell you what you're doing wrong. This is a great thing to do when you're just hot lapping and get stuck at a certain point of the track, knowing you're doing something wrong but can't figure out what the hell it is.

Not only will you learn to be a faster and safer driver, but you'll make a friend or 2 in the progress. I have found that it is the LFS community that makes this game so much fun online.

P.S. Do not be ashamed to ask. Yes you are a noob, but showing that you have the will to learn will earn you respect and differentiate you from the oh so common "I am the best" noobish behavior.

I can certainly vouch for that advice! I found a tutor like you described early on and it helped me immensely. In fact I now belong to the team that helped in the first place. Its amazing how people are willing to help if you ask for it.

And you're right, the LFS community is really something special, especially compared to that of xbox live and most PC FPS, such as counter-strike.(*shudders*)...

There is some great advice in this thread. I'm new to LFS myself and have found getting sets from the fast guys and practicing offline first has helped a lot.

DO NOT focus all out on improving your laptimes in a race regardless of everything else. There are times when in a pack that you will have to yeild and take a less aggressive line. You may need to back off from the car in front slightly to get a good view of a fast chicane up ahead. Not doing this in order to maintain a 'fast' lap leads to accidents and people won't appreciate it.

Learn to race clean first, then learn to drive fast, although those two things are closely related anyway. Finishing a race intact will usually get you a midfield position or even better in most cases..

Continuing the trend of ''Post your X...'' threads, simply post your post! When the postie arrives simply take a snap and upload it here without delay! It will be a valuable insight into the lives of LFS members, and may even shave a few tenths off your lap times!

I would upload a pic of my post, but I live in the UK, and therefore haven't had a delivery in over 5 years...

Get 'posting'!

Just right click on the partition in My Computer and select 'format' from the menu.

You may have knackered your laptop by all the overclocking shinanigans, causing the unstable framerates. (highly likely!) Perhaps try getting a 3D Mark Score for your system and compare it to people running a similar spec. It does tests for CPU and graphics so it should show you where your system is underperforming..

If you have put vista on a separate partition (you should have), then you can simply format that partition. Make sure that you back up anything you want to keep from the Vista partition before formatting it, or save it to your XP partition.

I think you could have deleted the Vista partition during the install process for XP. Why didn't you just do that?

Quote from theirishnoob :none of us do... tons of idea's of what Might of happened b ut still... i despise that Micheal Moore guy for making money off it ( via his " mock"'u'mentorys Nod

Or perhaps he did it to get the public at large to question what was going on, and to present a different theory as to what happened. What better way to do this than a film?

Depends on how cynical you are I guess...

The general spec is good, but unfortunately the graphics card is seriously letting it down. No real point in overclocking it anyhow, you can't turn a pea shooter into a machine gun... And for goodness sake, DON'T get overclocking advice from Harjun!

Even though laptop graphics aren't upgradeable per se, I think there are some external graphics solutions available, but they are costly. At the end of the day, a desktop will always be better for gaming.

Toki, the graphics card itself is probably only 64mb. The 'up to' means that it will use some of the system memory to make up the difference when it needs to, ie ALL THE TIME when playing a game.

I like the race to be long enough to be able to factor in tyre wear, pit strategy etc, to me it just adds a lot more to the racing. Therefore I went for 45 mins...

Just make sure the damn heatsink is attached firmly to the die. If it uses clips, clip it. If it uses screws, use them.

Would you like a video tutorial on how to use a screwdriver?!

Jeez...
