Well I have both LFS and iRacing. I like both. I play both. If I have the choice between an iRacing scheduled well populated race, or a pick up LFS race, I will choose iRacing. Why? Because I find the physics in iRacing more believeable, and the safety rating ensures that the racing is pretty much always clean. Also, the fact that it is subscription service makes its members invest more into the sim, so you get less people acting like idiots.

However, if I just want to log on and race, thats where LFS comes in, and it does its job admirably. LFS is an incredible sim, and if I couldn't afford to subscribe to iRacing I'd be quite happy to stick with it full time. But as it is I like to have the choice. I must say however, that my iRacing time has increased since the LFS CTRA servers went down, but thats by the by....

Besides, a little competition can only be good for us simracers can it not?

Quote from thisnameistaken :Fortunately sentencing in British courts isn't based on the opinions of Mail readers. If it was, you'd get the death penalty for killing anyone under the age of 16, life for killing anyone who'd ever been a member of the armed forces, a minimum of 20 years for killing anybody with nice tits, and £100,000 for killing a muslim, a paedophile or Labour minister.

Oh, great.. Now I've got to figure out how to clean coffee off my nice new monitor... !

Its a shame about what happened, but its hard to make snap judgements without full knowledge of the events that occured. Call me cynical, but I doubt the british press' version of events tells the full story.

Hi there,

Just out of interest, is it the digital or analog version? And to mirror the previous poster, how much are you looking for for it?

Quote from kingfag :DAC's are useless for recording audio
You need a good ADC for that, and i don't think the Creative cards really do any better than other less expensive sound cards (not including on-board audio).
To be honest, i highly doubt anyone will notice a better DAC (obviously comparing to "quality" sound cards, not your 5$ Sweex soundcard). A proper hifi set is connected digitally, skipping the whole built-in DAC. Even those crappy 5.1 speaker sets are digitally connected these days.
Yes, crappy 5.1 sets. There is the built-in amplifier with up to 10% distortion on higher volumes (that was a THX labeled Creative set :shy, a cheap subwoofer that is tuned to have a massive bump in the 100-150Hz range to give a "nice fat bass that shakes everything in your house" (hello Logitech :shy and a bunch of cheap fullrange drivers in a plastic case or "wood" that's so thin it's almost cardboard.
Maybe you can hear the difference with a good headphone, but who carries a headphone all day? I don't know about you, but i don't.

Sorry, my mistake. What I meant to say was that BOTH the DAC and ADC on the Elite Pro are the same as in the Emu range of cards. Not much point on just depending on the DAC when recording from an analog source... Trust me, for a compromise between gaming and music production, you could do a lot worse. I am listening to it through studio monitors, and to my ears it does a good job when recording and mixing, with a clean, well defined sound, especially in audio creation mode with all the other effects etc turned off.

Quote from Jakg :XtremeAudio - POS.
XtremeGamer - Good.
XtremeMusic - Same HW as more expensive models, includes (iirc de-activated) X-RAM. Can be modded.
Fatality, Elite, Pro etc - XtremeMusic + useless features ()

For £50 (the price of an XtremeMusic) theres nothing else on the market for the home gamer / occasional music recorder i'd recommend. For ~£100 you can get a Auzentech X-Fi Prelude or the Asus Xonar which are both based off the X-Fi chipset.

Modding guide is here - http://www.overclock.net/sound ... e-x-fi-mod-will-void.html

It's soldering stuff like better OPAMPS on the card and adding extra magnetic sheilding to the card etc. No idea if it's up your street, though...

Sorry Jakg, but I have to correct you on one point. The X-Fi Elite Pro has better quality DAC's than the others in the X-Fi range. (the same ones as in the E-Mu 1820M, if you're interested :P ) Not at all useless to BBT if he wants to record audio.

I have the Elite Pro, because I produce music as well as play games on my PC. I agree with you that if you don't use the card for in depth audio work then the Xtreme Music will do quite nicely..

Quote from Crommi :The thing is, not everyone knows how to build a computer and do so without breaking something. It's much easier when you're given one component and said "This is graphics card, now look inside and replace that one with this." compared to situation where you have craploads of pieces and no idea which one goes where.

I managed to destroy integrated soundchip in first motherboard I installed by not realizing to adjust those screwmounts according to holes on new mobo.

Agreed. However, building a PC is a useful skill to have (especially when troubleshooting problems), and you save a load of cash in the process. Theres loads of help out there if you need it, including from these forums. As an added bonus, I think its good fun as well.

If you were careful and did some research you could build a rig yourself that would blow that one out of the water, for the same price (or just under).. Depending on what bits you already have, of course.

A while back I upgraded to a Q6600, 4gb RAM, 8800gt oc 512mb, 500W quiet PSU for just under £400 from these guys...

No problem at all. Thanks for the kind feedback, I have always found that the simplest ideas tend to be the most effective..

Great initial review. I have also just purchased the TrackIR and am slowly getting to grips with it. The increase in immersion is far greater than I was anticipating, and after a few hours it started to become natural, looking around the car and into corners. As said in the SRT review, with the TrackIR the helmet cam in Race07 finally makes a lot of sense!

I gave LFS ago without the headtracker after using it for a bit and it felt like my head was in a vice! However, I need to tweak the settings a bit before it is perfect. When I get a profile I like I'll link to it here for you to give it a go.

I had been thinking about saving for a triplehead2go setup for a while now, but tbh I think that by upgrading to a slightly bigger monitor and using the trackir I can get a similar effect, thus saving money and desk space.

Do I think the trackir makes me lap faster? In a word, no. It certainly helps in spotting apexes and comes in especially useful for situational awareness in tight racing, but I don't think it will cut your laptimes. In fact, it took a while before I felt 'connected' to the car again, as until you have 'trained your head' it can be hard to see the visual cues as to what the car is doing. I have not raced online with it yet, but I can see my racecraft improving as I get to grips with it more. The main advantage is that of the immersion and illusion of reality that headtracking provides, which after all is the reason we simrace at all, isn't it?

Let me know how you're getting on...

Quote from Postman Pat :Regarding the G25: the problem is that it's near impossible to maintain the same breaking control i.e. threshold of locking, while blipping as when not. I've modded mine with a wooden block under the break pedal pad, thus bringing them closer when breaking and at the moment of the blip. But it would also be easier if the break pressure varied rather than having to rely on position to judge. If you haven't a decent seat then watch yer back folks!

FWIW, the effect of not h&t-ing in LFS is much less than GTL - where at racing speeds and aggressive changing, the car will likely swap ends without h&t; you certainly get a real kick up the back end changing without matching revs first. I don't know which is more true to real life.

I agree with that regarding GTL. The 427 Cobra is extremely likely to switch ends under heavy braking. I'd imagine the ideal is somewhere in between LFS and GTL tbh..

Origamiboy I find the G25 pedals are not natural feeling enough to make H&T easy for me, how exactly did you mod yours?

SD.

I added spacers to the brake and clutch, so that when braking the throttle is at the right level to heel and toe. Check out this thread for details...

Thanks for the replies everyone. I especially appreciate the advice regarding keeping the car stable. Knowing I don't have to heel toes EVERY single downshift seems to have helped a lot in keeping everything under control.

I have attached a few laps I did in the FZR at Aston National using manual clutch and heel toe. They aren't particularly fast (mid 1.46's mainly) but it felt good and stable through the corners. If you could look at my lines and in particular my throttle, brake, and clutch traces and give advice it would be much appreciated.

Thanks.
Should heel and toe make you faster?...!

Hi all,

Since the x30 patch I have spent a lot of time learning to heel and toe with manual clutch on my G25, including modifying my pedals to help. Although I feel I am getting better my times are still much slower than they should be.

To compare, I just did a few laps without blipping on my downshifts and my times were immediately 1+ seconds faster. It seemed that the wheels locking in the corners wasn't that much of a hinderance compared to the actual process of heel toeing.

I'm pretty sure that the difference is due to not keeping a consistent brake pressure whilst heel toeing, but I'm not sure how to cure it.

Does anyone here actually race online using manual clutch and heel toe, or is it a case of 'showing off' whilst messing about in single player? I want to play LFS as realistically as possible, but it is off putting lagging behing those using a simpler control method.

Thanks in advance.

The CTRA are points based servers, which have a multi tiered licence system.

CTRA Race 1 is the entry level server, running XRG and XFG. Gain enough points to gain a silver licence on this server and you will be permitted to use certain cars on CTRA Race 2, a predominantly GTR based server. Points are gained by taking into account experience, finishing position and lap times.

A similar system works for the CTRA single seater servers and 'bump and jump' servers.

Basically, if you can't drive a car, gain more points on the entry level servers first. You will learn a lot in the process.

Hope this helps...
