Cheers for the replies everyone.

I was having trouble manual clutching in the single seaters, I now understand why!

I agree with the post above in that I do feel more in control of the car using a manual clutch and shifter, and in some cases I feel I can brake slightly later...

One last question... When I use manual clutch I do all my throttle and braking with my right foot, with my left solely dedicated to clutch (like driving IRL). Should I be left foot braking? Is there much benefit to using heel and toe and is it hard to learn? (I know, that was technically 2 questions.....!)
Help with racecraft, particularly T1..

Hi all,

I'm a bit confused about why I seem to be taken out pretty much every time at T1 when starting in the middle of the grid. When setting off I always look left and right to see who is on the inside and outside. When it comes to the first corner, I look to the inside, and if there is a car there, instead of turning in anyway I slow down slightly and take the outside line instead.

Problem is that when doing this I almost certainly get sideswiped by a driver trying to dive down the inside line after I have started turning in.

How come I try to avoid accidents in T1 and everyone else seems to be out for themselves? Its started to get a bit annoying...

I should point at that I get taken out very rarely when starting near the front of the grid, unless someone behind neglects to brake..

A lot of it is to do with how you ask for the setup.. If you ask for a set in the middle of a race you won't get one.
Also, ''May I please try your set?'' gets a much better response than ''SET PLZ!''.
It seems that in LFS a little politeness goes a long way, which can only be a good thing IMHO..
To clutch or not to clutch?..

Hi all,

I've been playing LFS for a couple of weeks now, and have been trying to learn how to learn to clutch properly. (I own a G25 ). My reasoning is if I'm playing a sim, I should play it in as realistic a manner as possible.

When asking in various servers whether many other racers with a clutch setup did this, they pretty much all said something along the lines of ''No I don't, its not as fast, but it is more realistic''.

Feeling intrigued, I decided to practice a couple of popular setups, namely AS Cadet with the UFR, and AS Club with the FOX. (I know, I need to branch out a bit more!), with and without clutch. Without clutch I would brake with my left foot.

I found that I was actually driving quicker and more consistently WITH the clutch! Thinking about it, for me it makes sense. Using the clutch my driving seems smoother, probably because my throttle and brake inputs are entirely separate. (I don't heel toe or anything like that) In comparison to without clutch I found myself hitting the throttle and brake together at points, causing the car to act unpredictably during braking.

Now, even if using the clutch is slower I think I may continue using it. If anything, my tires will thank me. Perhaps new players to LFS should consider learning to drive with the clutch, but I understand that it hard to break old habits for those of you that don't.

Also, what LFS cars would I need to use a clutch for in real life. Do I need to clutch for the single seaters, or just those cars which use the H-shifter?

What do you think?

I'm not going to wade in here and say one camp is right or wrong on this issue, I can understand both sides.

On the one hand you have those who want to have a consistent, accessible experience, especially online. Now, with the system the way it is you can click on any server and be in the game instantly, without having to worry about having the correct track/car/version/add-ons installed for it to work. While many FPS games will allow you to download items missing from your install before joining the server, this may not be workable in a racing sim, looking at the size of some mods available for the likes of rFactor. Even then I have given up on joining many FPS servers due to the long download time of ''WAZZUPSOUND.WAV'' or some other ''unnecessary'' file required by the host.

Then there is the 'modding crowd'. If anything shows the hit and miss nature of modding it is rFactor. There are several fantastic mods out there, which are unfortunately set amongst a backdrop of inferior ones. Also, for a new player, sourcing the relevant files often leads to trawling numerous internet forums, particularly with the download limit present at rfactorcentral. Also, due to the sheer number of mods available, the rfactor online community has become fragmented, with no obvious continuity of track/car/mod etc present between servers. This fragmentation is not a problem in FPS games, due to the sheer number of players. BUT in the comparatively miniscule sim racing community it can lead to the online portion of the game being uninhabited except for set times such as leagues etc, leaving ''pick up and play'' racers out in the cold.

Don't get me wrong, rFactor has some great mods, and as a single player game it is worth considering. But if you want to race online, LFS seems to be the only way to go. To acheive this Scawen has had to make some sacrifices, and if one of those is to limit user created content then so be it IMHO..

Perhaps if we could get rFactor and LFS to mate, then the resulting offspring would be the zenith of sim racing?! BTW check out this months AutoSimSport, it has an article which covers this subject at length..

Hi all,

I've been playing LFS for about 2 weeks now and this is something I'd love to be a part of. It seems like a great opportunity to learn several car/track combos without the fear of being hung out to dry by more experienced racers on the more popular servers.

I'll be free to race most evenings (UK time).

Can't we all just get along? At the end of the day, both sides of the argument have a point, but this is a newbie forum.

As a newbie forum, people new to the LFS community will look at posts here first to get an idea of what the community is like. What impression do you think someone new would have after reading this thread? Point made I think...

I'm new to LFS myself, and everyone has been great in getting me started. It would be a shame if people were put off from joining such a community by a thread like this.. Don't you agree?

Well, time for an update..

I've been continuing on the CD3 server as before with the UXR. Everyone on the server has been great, offering loads of tips and car setups. At times Franke and other players have spectated me and posted comments on my driving so I can see what needs improving as I go.

All of this has lead to me achieving a PB on the AS Cadet course of 51.97. Not the quickest by a long shot, but apparently enough to qualify me for the ''Pro'' Conedodgers servers.

Without the help I have recieved from the community I could never have hoped to improve this fast, having only got the game 3 days ago. Once again, thanks for all of the help.

I can't wait to see what else this sim holds in store over the coming months/years.

Well I'm sure I'll be seeing more of you on the track, I seem to have been bitten by the LFS bug good and proper!

I'll get T1 and T2 right in the end if my life depends on it!

Then again, I'm great on the straights...
Many thanks LOOK Franke...What a great community this game has! :D

Hi there,

I'm not sure if this guy I met today in the Conedodgers 3 server posts on here or not, but I just had to post and show my gratitude to ''LOOK Franke''.

He spotted me on the server, complimented my driving as someone new to LFS, then invited me onto his server for practice. At this point he spent a few hours talking me around the AS Cadet course until I started posting some competitive lap times.

I could never have expected to be treated like this as a ''noob'' (I hate that word ) in a simulation such as this.

It is great to become a part of such a community, and fantastic to have been made to feel so welcome.

Many thanks,

Andrew

I can echo the opinion that the x1950pro is a great card, as I have one! It really does give a lot of bang for the buck. It should be a while before I need to change it, ie when DX10 becomes mainstream.

With my current games it copes admirably, and murders LFS without AA/AF.

Just out of interest, how do I set AA/AF with LFS, as I see no option for this in the game menu? My frame rate should be fine with them enabled, but no sign of it anywhere...

Do I need to set up the AA/AF using the card driver settings from the desktop instead, using the Catalyst Control Centre?

Many thanks.

Hi all, this is my first post on these forums.

I have been an avid racing fan for a long time now and have recently taken great interest in sim racing, culminating in downloading Live for Speed. I've been playing the demo for a while and will be splashing out on the S2 licence very soon.

Seems it will be a while before I have any spending money again, especially after taking the plunge and buying a G25 to get the most from my racing! (Worth every penny btw...)

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to racing with you guys (eventually!), this seems like an excellent, friendly community which I am looking forward to becoming a part of.
