Quote from k_badam :As much as I love LFS, the only thing that is wrong about this is that I don't think we need anything to hold us for an extra couple months. We've stayed here with virtually stagnant development for many years, don't think anyone who is still here will be leaving that soon... Which is a shame because I think people not playing anymore is the kick in the backside that Scavier really need to get some updates going.

I mostly agree with your statement apart from really being stagnant, Its probably that the work that has been done does not apply for your use of LFS, For us that use VR plenty has been done and scawen has shown what they are working on

Back on topic. Really looking forward when its released, would love to see how it is in VR

I think auricular is the translation for 'headset' but I guess from what you are saying it's not a good choice because really the Spanish word refers to something more specific like 'headphones'.

So it seems like:

It enters VR mode, draws a distorted image on screen as if you are in VR mode, then you say it 'closes' after a few seconds. But as I understand it, LFS is then still running in the background and you can see it in task manager? So what actually happens... does the LFS window disappear? Is LFS still visible in the windows taskbar?

I think you should use task manager to close any LFS instances that are still in memory but are not visible, before starting a new one. They are taking up memory and it's possible they could affect Steam VR.

A couple of things you could try:

1) Try setting LFS to English before trying to enter VR mode. It is really unlikely this could help, but it's worth testing in case there is a text buffer I made too small, and the Spanish translation uses a long line.

2) The Pimax software has a mode "Parallel projections" or something like that. LFS should not need to use parallel projection. It may be worth trying in both modes.

Quote from TRM.13 :No changes with -vr parameter, same closing
DEB files does not help much I think (attached both game starting ways)

Ah, this is not what I was expecting.

It only gets as far as "open VR". There is no closing sequence visible in the log files. I think this is related to something you said before, that the LFS process is still running? Does that mean you need to close LFS with the task manager?

EDIT: Watch the screenshot I have time to take. The auricular position appears red but HMD position stuf seems correct. Plus, the game closes when the sound init line has been created in DEB file when the game is started using the vr parameter. Audio problem? Let me how to test it

Maybe I need to add some logging in a test patch, so any reason for starting the exit process is logged as a line in deb.log.

For now, I just wondered what would happen if you start LFS in VR mode. You can do that by creating a shortcut to LFS.exe then add the command line /vr=openvr

So for example the Target line in shortcut properties might be:
C:\LFS\LFS.exe /vr=openvr

I have tried today, everything restarted obviously, and same result. The difference could be that I was able to see the next menu options a little bit longer. It is something related with the position, left/right and things like these.
Did you adjust the FPS limitation, reduced the supersampling, any graphic configuration, etc? I did not, everything full since my pc should be able to move the game easily. Maybe I am too optimistic?

I have tried with lower graphic configuration, testing one on one, and the same closing. I have tested with and without FPS limitation, shaders on/off, everything which could be related. I have even tried to click on "ok" red button but once the this last VR configuration window opens I lose the mouse cursor and enter key does not work either, it is a matter of 5 seconds the game closing.

I can't understand anything I see in windows event viewer, let me know what to look for.

For the record: when the game "crashes" the task it is still opened. I realised that when I wanted to update from U to U7 (not letting me updating LFS.EXE file)

More: If the Pimax are not connected and if I go to VR, steamvr opens but then game says "not able to open vr device" (not exactly these words but something like that). The game does not crash.

Crash entering VR using Pimax [FIXED]
TRM.13

I am back to LFS since years with the game left and unfortunately the game closes when I select VR. I use Pimax 5k+ and I think I do everything right. I can configurate everything but when I choose VR/OpenVR/solo configuration in VIEWS I see (only in monitor, not in the HMD) for a pair of seconds the next configuration window but then the game closes. I have the latests U patch, latest SteamVR and latest Pitools (1.01.197)

Thanks for the help and sorry if I did not see the solution in another thread (I have tried to find at least)

EDIT: I can play in monitor without any trouble

Quote from Evolution_R :It is as important to have a decent graphics when the new physics are ready for release. Smile
Also I don't think that the developers of LFS are singing the song of a sinking ship.

Ummm, no..

But well spotted, from a vague reference.

Graphic's alone will not bring the sim back to life. The physics update, first spoken of in 2006, and still LONG awaited, plus whatever extra content (VR, improved graphics, extra squirrels,) may do so but there is ONE key update (physics) that is really needed and (POSITIVE Thumbs up ) I hope will bring the sim back to life in this half of the world.

I'm really thrilled that 2 servers are showing full grids with this update.......

Hello Racers,

Here is a new test patch: 0.6U7

It is mainly for VR image quality:
- Resolution adjustment (aka supersampling / PPD)
- Select 4x or 8x multisample antialiasing
- Fixes for Pimax headsets

There are also some graphical and force feedback improvements"............

Quote from Racer X NZ :LFS has it's own development speed and refuses to allow mods,

It does, it even has it's own server flag. But okay, it's quite limited. If car mods would be allowed with customizable "hitbox" it would already be a big step forward. The thing is that this alternative development build seems to block regular development for ten years now so we can discuss what we want but it doesn't matter.

Only thing what needs to be clear is that South City 2.0 on its own doesn't change anything other then some legal and illegal cruising servers going to be happy with that. And, some VR users. If the "worth to wait" comment was targeted towards this group it's fine. It sure stirs up some development discussion (again).

IMHO - RBR and GP Legends, two of the best racing sims ever are kept (very) alive with community mods........

Automobilista, my current single player go to, has many mods for cars and tracks and it's physics are about as good as LFS (in my opinion Smile ), and the AI are light years better than LFS's.
If and when LFS actually updates the physics and AI ( There is NO multiplayer here now ) then great, till then there is no reason to update to S3 (I've got Rockingham in Automobilista, and many, many more tracks including most NZ & Aus tracks .... )

LFS has it's own development speed and refuses to allow mods, fair enough as that's the dev's choice.

The fact that it's regularly hacked suggests that it's still a good racing sim, but it does need an active community to keep the game alive.

As we can't have mods in LFS then we can only wait for the Dev's to actually release the updates, and till then I'm enjoying the other sim's available out there.

Modded games are really the way to involve the community and keep games fresh, alive, and current. ( In my opinion, just look at Skyrim as an example. )

EDIT:
LFS updates post 2005.*

1: - VR, Yeah Right..... Like most gamers ( and most Racing Game dev's )I really don't care yet.... Yes, awesome idea BUT it's only going to be a winner with 4th or 5th gen gear in a game that actually has a user base online racing.

2: - Better track detail, I enjoy (RS)RBR, GP Legends and Automobilista as games, not for their awesome graphics.....
Track detail is nice, but it's only icing on the cake.

*LFS was used by Turtle Entertainment and Volkswagen to showcase the new Scirocco in Leipzig Games Convention in 2008. A competition using LFS was held and the prize was a real Scirocco car. The Scirocco release for Live for Speed had been scheduled for December 19, 2008, however it has been delayed indefinitely due to unexpected fatal flaws in the latest patch and with the Scirocco itself, forcing the LFS team to remake the suspension system and tire physics.

When I turn on VR (OpenVR) in LFS the monitor shows LFS as if I am using the headset.
Inside the headset I see SteamVR home. So the tracking seems to work but I am just not getting LFS in my headset.

Steam VR is installed and I’m using LFS 0.6u.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Quote from loopingz :Hi there,
How can I map F8 (and space) to a button?
It might even be interesting to map a button to switch from 2D to 3D and vice versa.
I am noob at vr with 3 laps... So it might be stupid question.

In Options - Controls screen, CTRL+ or ALT+ tab:

You can assign the text /vr reset to the wheel button, to replicate F8.
And assign the command /press space to map the space key to a button.

Let me know if that's not clear.

Quote from mbutcher :I wanted to make a thread about being able to customize the mapping for the VR Click (currently space). Every time I'm typing while leaning over my wheel I'm accidentally pressing OK, Cancel or special characters on the "T" text entry window because I'm pressing space to start a new word. To avoid it I have to deliberately look down while typing which is annoying during a situation where you need to focus on the road and type.

I won't get the VR headset out for a test right now, but I think you are saying that when the text box is visible, the cross hairs are also visible and the space key can then perform one of two functions. Either adding a space character to the text, or performing a 'click' if the cross hairs are over a button, which happens unexpectedly while typing unless you are careful about where you are looking. That does sound quite annoying.

I will try to remember this, I wonder if maybe there could be some kind of solution, without needing to reassign the space bar.

I really believe it is a software issue. There are ways to setup the vr differently but I failed miserably.
To run at 90Hz I have cheaper option. Resolution is great though.

Yeah sure, you just need to go to the Control Panel then to the Alt+ tab and then you should see a /vr reset command next to alt+F12. Assign the button of your choice on the right and you're good to go! As for ctrl-F8 specifically I'm not sure though. Maybe you'll need to add a command in the script folder.

May be I don't have to map F8 but something like /vrreset but I don't know the syntax...

OK I can bind /vr reset to a button by using ctrl fx function...

Space can be directly mapped to a button easy.

From the blurb it would appear that these goggles will work on a PC whereby the screen is mirrored within the goggles.
Having searched here for DJI and returned nothing, I was wondering if these goggles are capable of providing an alternative way to enjoy the LFS VR experience?

Many thanks

Quote from bishtop :ah so its not to do with connection to the server or anything, there is a button which brings up some info that shows physics ect update which should give some insight, il have to take a look now then il post the key to press to show it Smile

EDIT - Go to settings and then misc then on the right hand side at the top click the + sign and it should show sleep phys wait . how do they look when you go to drive or turn ect.

In vr my phys is all way to left so a small fairly steady line with random small spikes . More than 3/4 of phys window clear. The wait line fills up half that window with Same small spikes . But always stays around half . In non vr the game doesn’t stutter at all and the wait is the same small line as phys with more than 3/4 of window clear . In vr , stutter or not those two lines remain the same . I have to wonder if it’s a setting since others it works ok . I tried both oculus and open vr same results .
