I'd love to hear some news from Scawen (hope your kids are doing fine, mate!). Meanwhile I just run RBR.

Well, if Scawen isn't into PR it leaves him with more time to coding. I do agree (naturally) that I would like to see more news-feeds on progression. I have always looked at LFS from the dev point of view and never really demanded anything, because what we have is a great sim indeed.

So if you are not satisfied with LFS today, where do you turn to get that LFS-satisfaction that you had? pCARS, iRacing, rFactor2, AC? I must admit I do not run LFS as much as I used to, but hey it is still a great piece of art. I do hook up with some friends to do the classic turns from time to time and it never fails to deliver (still outclass pCars etc).

I hope we hear some news soon so we can all get exited and gather again around the best sim that was - and continue to be. We should really bombard Scawen with positive feedback, because that's the only thing he deserves.

It is quite pointless to carry on arguing on this, LFS is dead or not, since it is a subjective matter how each and everyone "feel" about the game and the community .
The facts show the popularity is now in comparison to 2005-06 (regarding online activity) and I did not see anybody saying it was dead back then. On the contrary.
On the other hand the trend was positive then (growing no of servers), whereas now it is negative. Another fact is that I do not need to race against 1000's of friends, 10-15 is enough for me and they're still out there enjoying the game every now and then.
Hopefully, the work Scawen, Victor & Eric has recently invested will boost the community once released. Perhaps we'll see the 2008-09 figures once again .

The whole "LFS is dead"-thing is plain silly since it's just in your head. If you think so, you are dead, as a racer. LFS is still alive and kickin as it has always been. Goes over my head how to blame your own lack of engagement on a product that is still the same fantastic piece of software that it's always been.

It's alright to loose interest, people do that. Whether you ski alot, surf alot, baking cookies or making babies alot, you may loose interest and move to another ego-expansion hobby. It does not mean skiing is dead, or baking cookies or making babies is dead, does it?

No offence, but some peoples way of thinking is beyond me...

Try the DCS series, Black Shark or the A10-Warthog (or both ). Great sims. If you're into tactical war-gaming I could recommend Matrix Games: Command Ops: Battles from the Bulge. Nothing there will ruin your race-sim experience. For some gravity-practice, try the Lunar Flight. Fun, well made (indie-sort-of) game.

What has been said above.
If you get into LFS and meet likeminded people, I promise you there's no stop having fun. From a personal view, some servers are bad some are good (and some are even ugly ). It's just a matter of making friends with a favourite group of people/server and off you go. In the end you might be part of a private server where you can trust everyone to have a great time together.
Welcome here and good luck!

If it's too stiff, try reducing the spring (all the way down to 5-10%) and keep the FFB for other effects. I sometimes change the settings depending on what car/mood I want to explore. However, there should not be a "strange feeling" at all, so I suggest you spend some time on exploring your possibilities. Good luck mate!

Just to add another comment, it may well take you a week of tweaking your config until you are completely satisfied. But it's totally worth spending that time so you feel that you are driving the car and not the other way around .

What I found in LFS is the fact that the more you drive (and get to know the tracks) the more enjoyable it gets. Maybe that is the answer to your question on a personal level. Since you've just covered a very limited amount of kilometers, it may apply to you as well. Hope you see my point and feel the joy after some more laps on those same circuits. Happy driving mate!

Who wants to drive with a phone?
Although I see developments of API's as quite interesting, I believe LFS is a bit too complex to transfer into a web browser. I could be wrong though.
On the other side, is there really a need for it - why would it be interesting? (i.e. what are the benefits?). Just wondering.
Thanks for the link btw.

PS: It sure looks good with a FPS@65 at the showcase. DS

Your personal synthesis describes pretty much my very own opinion as well. The only part where I would beg to differ, or comment on, is Simbins STCC2-title. I do not know if that was included in your test of "Race07 with bunch of expansions" or not.

The STCC2 expansion is quite good in its simulation of Swedish tracks and it's cars when doing short races. Less good when it comes to long races and tyre wear appears a little off. I say this with a little background from some real racing with the Volvo C30 at a couple of those tracks. I still get surprised when entering Race07+STCC2 and take off in my Volvo. Very rewarding.

Just another view on that particular title.
Otherwise, yes, LFS is the one I keep coming back to!

Been here since 2003. There's no way I let this title slip away. All the progress I've seen during this time is simply amazing. Some of you olds'kool' people I know, some I do not. Whatever, I feel that I have some more great people to meet.

Opinions are just opinions. Here's mine:

Online:
Since LFS is a multiplayer game, this is where you need to be - online, among other real people. As with all games interacting with humans, the game can only be as fun as the company allows. If you find likeminded people (and you will), LFS is a total blast. Why? Because it provides all the virtual racing tools necessary for a succesful online experience. It's got an extremely fast on/off button, swift and elegant means of communication and data-sharing, flexible in-car camera controls, great statistics tool, custom paints, numerous car and track configurations, complex and gorgeous physics model, and - last but not least - a dedicated group of developers that do not give in to mainstream popgaming.

Offline:
The AI can however be used to practice situation awareness. Put yourself last on the grid and 6 AI in front. Make a 5 lap race with the goal to finish first without causing mayhem. The fact that AI will run you over (following racing line) adds a bit of challenge to how you position your car. Hence a great tool to plan and perform your overtakings safely (location/brakezones/acceleration and laneswitching etc). Something that obviously come in handy when going online.

I like what was already said above (Gutholz): The difference of driving with people you know, is like using a proper wheel/H-shifter/axis-clutch instead of keyboard. Huge difference.

Good luck with whatever choice you make (also, £24 is not the end of the world - it can be the beginning...).

Omar1, thanks for the quickfix! I tried SoftTH (with Win7) a while back, but never got it to work properly with my setup. Now it took me 20 secs and I'm back to my XP LFS environment! Perfect!

Another year gone by, hope you still keep your feet on the ground. We need people like you for innovation and progress in this "sim" world. A big congratulation here from me too.

Picked it up right after Stunt Car Racer !
Used the keyboard/mouse/crappy thrustmaster wheels for some time and came back with a G25 some 5ish years ago. O'boy, was that a revelation ! Completely new gaming experience! It showed me the true strenght of LFS and I've never since found anything better to suit my virtual driving needs... (That also goes for the excellent online-community!)

...then call it "powerslide", "rubberburn" or "environmentally-wrong-way-to preserve-earthly-sustainable-development-sport". It is in fact a contribution to the gaming aspect of LFS that is measurable (as sinanju pointed out) and as long as it is entertainment, we do not need to compare to its real-life counterpart. Equally fun for all, even though it does not consider all parameters of a good drift (as if defined by a jury) . Just my thoughts.

Excellent news Scawen!
Needless to say; keep up the good work!
We're all exited with LFS future prospects, especially since 2013 is looking good as far as virtual racing is concerned. All the best wishes for the extended physics developmet!

Since sinanju mentioned me, I can confirm that experimenting with the drift scoring concept is quite fun. Even off-line (thanks again sinanju for a big load of help). Hope you get into it jaco1981 and decide to join the fun on-line as well. Good luck with the drifting, and who knows, perhaps it leads straight into some traditional competing along the way...

Like said above, get (or make) a proper drift setup.
It is a bit strange that you, after 2-3 months of practise, still do not master (or at least manage) drifting. What controller do you use? Axis throttle/clutch? I'd say it'll take you a day to get into the concept and then it's just a matter of getting better and finding that total control and balance between tyre wear and applied force and countersteer. Do you drive IRL?
You must be doing something totally wrong, so I hope you get it right soon enough!

Quote from NovaK :Track releases shouldn't be affected by the tyre physics, as it has nothing to do with it.

How do you know this? Perhaps there is a relationship between track surface and tyres that Scawen is exploring at this very moment? If you think again, I think you will agree that track surfaces has a great impact on how tyres behave?

Quote from NovaK :Not to mention releasing an updated high-res standard for the game, there's plenty of good souls in this community that deserves to be hired to be part of the game developing.

Could you please name the bunch that "deserves" to be part of the development team? It would be interesting to hear the motivation for this statement and review their accomplishments in relation to LFS development. Perhaps you should recommend these "souls" on the basis of their tremendous contribution to the internet racing community? :fluffy:

Quote from NovaK :LFS wouldn't be anything without it's love-caring community, true facts.

LFS would still be LFS, don't see where you're getting at here. Sure, the revenue has helped further development and the public love for the game keeps us all happy with unprecedented exitment. It's like saying a beautiful red apple is nothing without somebody of us eating it. If we choose not to eat it, it's still an apple . Somehow it sounds like you have got it all backwards. We have nothing to do with what LFS is! It has been programmed by 3 brilliant individuals, not us!
