Just for information:
I'm using G25, manual clutch and H-box. I do pretty well in longer races as for final position, but can't ever beat the fastest lap-times. So, when reading this thread, I thought I'd have a go on auto-clutch and paddles. It took me 9 laps on Blackwood to shave off half a second on my PB that had 3 weeks of training behind it ! Interesting.

Now, I will of course set my gearbox to H-box and full manual clutch again, but the test made me realize, I'm not that slow... as I thought I was. Also, I bet some of you fast guys are using manual clutch and H-box which I find very impressive ! But from many fellow racers I found out they were going auto-clutch and paddles (or even automatic gear-shifting).

So this experience told me, once again, that a better server-filter could be useful for "us" that have the option to use H-box and manual/analog clutch. It would simply make us all meet under the same hardware usage conditions (and driving attitude). As one above just pointed out, it could be a good idea to just create a G25-club (or similar hardware) wherein we are all prepared to enjoy the full of LFS... but dont know if it would work in practice?

Thx for reading, happy drivin!

@bobbyfish - agree

It's a lot easier to plan ahead knowing other ppl have the same (hard/real) settings as yourself. That's why I drive with friends I know. I can laugh just as much finishing last as being first in a race. In fact, I laugh while I'm driving, not after the race is over. It's the time you spend in the race - and how you feel the game come alive - that counts to me. That said, we might appear to be a wierd breed of gamers. Not caring about finishing first, when it's actually a race!

About your request/suggestion about better server filters, it definitely has a point in my view. In the way that it's good to know that your combatants are struggling with the same difficulties as yourself.

We are all different, but we all love this game!

Perhaps we should meet up on a server some day!

Well, what is realistic or not is up to everyones perception. I just thought it could be done with a minor effort from the devs. Maybe it's hard, and if that is the case, I'd just slide back a bit and accept the popular position.

Seems like no one else like this option so consider it as wiiiining.

Thanks for comments,
Ingolf.
Mirror Y-offset!

Have this been suggested?
A slider for the mirror in Y-direction. I like to sit quite near the dash (like attached image) but unfortunately I loose the mirror in this position.
Anyone else?

Oh... and I don´t like the virtual one.

hmmm... so you sit around all alone at your desktop in your dim light computer room and pronounce/read out loud (to yourself) the content on this forum ... or who is listening... just curious. Or do you ring eachother up and discuss LFS over phone? Are there many IRL meetings I should go to, where I need to know how to say Scavier?

Now, the funny bit is that I do need to know too. I dont know why, but it struck me that I have never ever said Scavier, yet I have been wondering about its pronunciation. I couldn't help laughing at myself !

Thanks for pointing out my own stupidity!
And hey, no offence, I just got this funny picture in my head...

PS: I know there are IRL meetings and (physical) group racing / teamspeak aso, so its not that far fetched, but I was just thinking about myself. DS.

Good to hear you enjoy RBR as much as I do . As mentioned by Blackout above, LFS & RBR are not really comparable (street/track vs SS), but my point was to recommend RBR as a complement to LFS. They certainly are allies. It was interesting to hear from SamH that going into RBR after LFS was a pice of cake - this is a really good indication that the sims follow eachother (reasonably) in handling. I felt the same.
There are alot of possibilities to alter physics and cams, adding cars, and modify tracks and sounds. It has taken me about 2 weeks to tune in the game the way I want it. Now, the brittish gravel roads really rocks!!

Anyhow, thanks for comments, and to those who have no copy of RBR - get it, and put it next to LFS! I got mine from a sales shelf for $10, and would have paid tripple the amount if I had to. It's a mystery why it didn't sell better. RBR is a worthy experience in memory of Richard.

Thanks,
Ingolf

PS: Here's a sound sample from RBR using Tore "aka" 2re's Audio v2.3 found at blackhole motorsports. DS.
LFS and Richard Burns!

Fellow Racers,
my point is:
1) LFS still rules, but
2) Richard Burns Rally (RBR) is outstanding

... as long as you travel over gravel...

I'm surprised that there are so few RBR threads here when compared to all comments about rFactor, GPL, GTR, GRTII and so on.
In my own opinion, the two best simulations are LFS and RBR.
GTR1 and 2 produce some good moments behind the wheel but still gives you the (wrong?) feeling as if the landscape is moving - not the vehicle.

This is very sad, especially as the upcoming (SimBin) RACE title feels just like that. I know RBR has some fans and I have (delighted) just become one of them. With some tweaking it really delivers.

How many of you agree? And if not, why do you not agree?
I really would like to shed some light over RBR, in case you did not know about this title.
LFS is still LFS and will (perhaps) allways be closest to my carkeys.

Thanks fellow racers, I appreciate your feedback !

The improved version means more suitable filmclips in sync with the music, and also better frame rates. I'll try to compile one with higher frame rates (currently 25) and resizing from 640*480 to 720*576. I'll see what I can do with the black frame...

I'll take your suggestions to go with the next movie.
Cheers!

As we all know LFS is growing at the speed of life. I had a quick readthru of the U10(U11)-post (and this one). My first thought was: "oh my good, is this happening? Couldn't Scawen foresee this!" I then started to imagine; what if we had various forums for people at different levels/ages/membership periods/matureness? What a splendid dictatorial idea! Hmmm...

I think this game and the whole LFS circus clearly reflects the human mankind (Homo Speediens) representing its natural evolution (actions and reactions) as well as the benefits AND drawbacks it unfolds. Of course; "the good old days" were a lot better, when we all could understand and appreciate the work of the devs. It was an exiting time (think 1920).

Now, I have not been a member for more than... eeh?... 9 months (had to go and peek at my stats) but did use the demo since 3 years back. I am to this day still amazed with what the devs have accomplished and agree with so many on their views on how people cries and take things for granted. But this is a free world, where all people, at all ages, from "different social backgrounds" (quote: Chris_Kerry), wheel configs, tyre settings and (car)skin colour. It seems inevitable (Terminator 4?) that theese spam posts appear.

So what to do? It hurts deep down my carburetor reading Scawens closing post, but hey, he needs to be pissed once and a while and he has certainly held his horse(power) back for a long time. If I have not missed anything, I think this is the first time he has acctually expressed discontent. But this "ridiculous" (quote:Scawen) posts can not go on. Our task (EVERYONE!) is to encourage and provide constructive criticism. The link by --NZ--_[HUN] says it all.

Let's just hope we are enough wesserbissers to keep on inspiring Scawen, Eric and Victor to continue their work.

Enough of philosophy, back to Speedosophy.

Thanks for your input, I agree with you about the slomo and music beeing out of phase sometimes. It's just a matter of putting some more editing time into it. But I am learning by doing. This is my first attempt at reaching fairly good image quality - and music. The following movies will hopefully improve !

Well, here's what you can do with MovieMaker real quick. Capture your clips with fraps and edit in windows MovieMaker. Didn't use VirtualDub on this one. The result on

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6788088985277189185

is a compressed (audio & video) low resolution version of the actual movie, but it may demonstrate how easy it is to play around as a driver AND director.

An alternative site (with another soundtrack) is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqYZg1ktWbk

It's nothing to compete with, as compared to what others have produced - just a source of inspiration to those who are starting to make movies.

Hope you enjoy, and feedback is (as always) much appreciated.

Great spin there RoCkBiGdAvE and thanx for trying out my layout!
Its interesting that you do a left turn (I guess because you're a right seater). Not much room on that side. I saw you compensated a bit to the right before pulling the wheel full to the left. I might modify the layout to give some space on the left side... however you did not seem to have any trouble anyway... Great race!

I need to get back to the wheel now... and beat it!
