Quote from Becky Rose :Because when sim racing your legs are in a fixed position for much longer. In bed you move, in a real car your body is more mobile than in a chair.

People die on planes from blood clots over much shorter periods of time, in sim racing the body is even more fixed in its position. Particularly the legs, the movement of which your body relies on.

All I am saying is that anyone attempting this on their own should get medical advise before hand to check they are physically fit enough - although in truth, blood clots effect physically able people indiscriminately, and I am saying it is irresponsible for an event organiser to accept single driver entries for a 24hr event when they know some of their audience are young and influencable.

Absolutly true, and please don't allow people to do this alone. It's always how accidents happen in videogames (YES, it does happen!): some kid plays for an incredible ammount of time, eventually dies of it for some reason.

Well, the ability to do /w pb in hotlap sure would be nice, and I don't think it would be too hard to get to. It's a good idea, +1 from me!

Yes, and we have not actually what we paid for S2. Considering that S2 is a full version, the current one is not, rather S1.X or something, even though it says S2 Alpha. I'm not complaining, just saying that people can't really complain if they bought S3 before they even had S2. It's taking risks; as Indiana said, the devs could be put in jail for whatever reason tomorrow and people would most likely never see that money back or S3 at all.

That said, I'm the first one to complain of the way Scavierge (good insight, Tristan :tilt work, but I understand that we can't change it, just give opinions hoping that one day they will change things. Also, as Vykos said, the developpment is absolutly not related to money. What would you want them to do? Produce faster because they're richer? No... what people would want them to do is hire somebody else to help doing LFS, which is not going to happen because they just don't want to.

Also, appart from a few people that have helped in the development of LFS, they have never accepted donations of any kind, would it be money or work. If you go asking them if you can help Scawen or Eric, they'll most likely not answer. The only time it happens is when they need help with something side-related to LFS like websites, or when something really outstanding that creates a general cheer in the community comes up (DaveWS' sound pack that becomes official).

As for the question of who owns what, they indeed own it, and we're allowed to use it. Considering that LFS is 95% multiplayer and 5% hotlapping (and hotlapping is only interesting if you compare your times with others, so it can actually be considered multiplayer, it looses all it's sense without a database of times), if the LFS Mserver died, LFS would simply die. So we own the right to play, only. Other games, where you play in single player, you own the finished product, but not the code of it. You own the CD, but not the information contained on it.

Another thing, we can count ourselves lucky that LFS is actually not completed and actually not as popular as some other games. If it was the case, Scawen would most likely have no choice but to create patches on a more regular basis or he'd lose everybody, and we'd most likely have to pay to get the best servers possible, and continuous updates. In some ways, LFS is very similar to MMO, it IS a MMO, but not as massive as other games, something we should be grateful for up to a certain point (there's a balance to achieve between having people to play with and a game that becomes over-populated, inevitably falling in some kind of money making pattern).

Hyper, I agree that all these informations would be very useful to have, but as others noted, it's very overloaded for a single screen (easily solvable), and also you'd leave the n00bs completely clueless. I mean, you see someone that has never ever driven in a racing game or watch it on TV play this and understand a damn thing? Nope...

But this should be somehow solvable too. Either add "?" pop-ups on pretty much every technical term (say, a little box that comes up with a "what is" description on rollover), or have all that tricky stuff hidden in a "advanced setup" button. For the people that just don't care about all this and just race others set, it would be better, and they'd still be able to go have a look if they're interested.

Quote from lizardfolk :who says they are all from america? You got to remember stock car racing is popular in Canada (cascar), mexico (corona series) and australia too. Therefore ovals are popular there.

Last time I checked, Cascar has never been really popular in Canada. In fact, Nascar is probably more popular than Cascar here; Cascar just looks too much like the crappy series made out of Nascar's product. If you list sports in USA, Nascar will probably come 2nd or something, in the top 5 for sure. Cascar in Canada? Probably after Fishing

Quote from CSU1 :Too hard with physics to be interesting? What?

Original...like a real track? or.......
Well, I've only played the Nurburgring in GT4, and actually making a perfect lap of it is nearly impossible (partly because it's very bumpy, has tricky turns and is after all longer than other track). That said, playing the Nurburgring in LFS would be quite hard, I mean... GT4 is easy stuff compared to LFS and it was still hard (i.e. driving mission 34, quite impossible without cutting the grass). I don't doubt the fact that it would be very interesting, but it would be somehow too tricky to be plain simple fun. I wouldn't get as much fun doing 1 or 2 laps of it as I get from doing a 5 laps race on Aston.

As for originality, I read it somewhere in the topic (can't remember the name of the poster), but he was talking about adding interesting things to the kind of tracks we already have: tunnels, elevation, "unique turns" (kinda hard to explain but... you know what I mean ).

In the end, I wouldn't hate driving on the ring in LFS, but I feel like I'd have more fun driving it in GT4, even knowing that LFS actually is better.

EDIT: Yes, about the time it would take Eric to make the Nurburgring. I mean... it would be totally insane. Not only he would need accurate data that itself would probably be long and expensive to get, but doing the whole track ALONE is just crazy. I mean... the guys that do it for GT4 were certainly a good lot. And add to this the fact that Eric is not the fastest working person in the world

I think that one point that nobody has talked about yet is that Eric definitely has more important thing to work on (i.e. stuff that he should have done in the last year).

That said, I agree that driving on the Nurburgring would be quite an experience, but something tells me that it would be too long, and too hard with LFS physics to actually be interesting. And as other people said, you would be pretty much alone all the time on the track, which would lead to boredom.

To be honest, I'd prefer original tracks, but more importantly, interiors for the GTRS

Everything seems to work fine here, nice stuff in there!

... but I might have a little suggestion while we're on the topic of test patches (and patches in general). It's not something very big, but every time there's a new patch, 'windowed while connecting' seems to reset itself, and since I'm a bit of a psychopath (like everybody =) ), I swear at it every time :P

EDIT: I like the new credits!

Well, i'm not a hundred percent sure about this, but Scavier never ever said they'd make something designed for drifters (and that's a good thing). You can drift on LFS, but it's not a drifting game. I know that LFS being a racing simulation includes drift in that, but I wouldn't be surprised if Scavier had grip racing in mind.

Quote from Ball Bearing Turbo ::jawdrop:

Scawen doesn't communicate much with the community? Now I've heard it all! Again I guess you'll say it's a case of "better than anything out there, but not very good nonetheless". It seems to me that we have the most vocal developers on the planet, at least in terms of sims Scawen does have well over 1000 posts, not sure how many but... Just do a search for his posts and see what you've missed.

That said, more is always better

Hmm, I don't know about the sims only, but just look at other games that are constantly in development (mmo's are probably the best example of that). The websites are updated a couple of times a day, there's in general a much more elaborated system. They have a precise way to work, something people can count on, not like LFS. The only thing that LFS has is a more personal approach since Scawen is basically alone to talk to the community.

Personally, it doesn't bother me THAT much, I think I'm just used to see the same web page for about 5 months before it changes, but still, I think I'm not alone that would like to see another approach. And think about it, of the people on this forum, only a few will eventually quit the game, we're the ones who will stay the longest. But we're not alone playing this game, there are a lot of people that get bored not to see updates on a regularly basis, and even thought we know that the point of the game is not to see itself by the million, it's not a good thing to let people go away like this.

Well, you get a load of crap if you're not doing what the people want you to do, it's the way life works, eh! In my opinion, Scavier can't really complain that we're moaning all the time, because they just don't really have contact with us. That's yet another thing lacking to LFS, better contact with the dev team. Apart from a couple of patch per years, some messages by Scawen that are most of the time related only to the current test-patch and from a huge message once in a while from Scawen, basically telling us to shut the hell up, we get nothing.

Taking up from what I said in my previous post, it's been ages since we heard of Eric, we have just NO idea on what he's been working.

I'm sorry col, but you were the one insinuating that higher poly isn't actually better because "bigger the better" is not right in video games? Uh. Yes, it is. More poly means less edges, more rounded looking. And there's a reason for that; real cars are not made out of poly, they're not made out of edges, but smooth plates, and the best way to achieve that is by making adding more poly. How many poly do you think a sphere would have?

Else, I totally agree with XC, and I don't think that LFS sucks either, it's just that it's not in the mood of the current video gaming community AS A WHOLE. It's true that LFS is not primarily about fancy look (and by that I mean realistic), it's about feeling, but as far as I know, when someone is in a car, there's not only the car on the road, there's also how they look, how everything around looks, and what sound everything makes. The goal of a simulation is to make something as close as the reality as possible, and that, LFS is only achieving in certain precise ways.

Again, I don't dislike LFS, it's a great game, but we all agree that it would win a lot being worked on by a bigger team. We also all agree that certain things are just not right; Scawen probably agrees too, I don't think a second that he believes car interiors are fixed, it's just that they're 3, and whatever time they put in LFS will always be less than a team of 20 or 50 person could do.

Edit: let me enter in edit mode to quote my brother, from about two months ago in an improvement suggestion topic:

"Scawen takes care of the physics, Eric takes care of the look. Normally, Eric working on better models or textures should not slow Scawen down, unless he's done with everything, and since this is not the case, we can say that at the moment, graphics details are just as important as physics.

That said, the wheels have no bolts...

..."

This, basically is a resume of what is wrong in LFS and why we somehow can ask questions. When have we seen the last major graphic update/improvement? Well, the last big one was the BF1, which is like... one car in a couple of months, not really a good rhythm. Oh yes! We got some new wheels for the single seater's, and even some sidewall markings! Is that all? In months, it's all we got, there's nothing in patch V that is related to graphic improvements. What's Eric doing? I'm wondering really, because he'd need to throw a complete patch of graphical updates to somehow catch up.

I agree that the dash board needs more work! In fact, we don't only need a fuel light, i'd go with hyperactive's idea, make something more realistic... what car has a round yellow light to indicate you're indicating? I think it should come with the eventual new car interiors, but... what?... no, I said nothing!

Altrought I do see an unusually high number of "same best lap" in races, I have the feeling that a new colision and impact absortion system is more important than this decimal.

Pretty much the same as everybody: I like the idea in theory, but since I know that in truth it's just awful, you won't see me play LFS if something like this happens. If it was only semi-profesionnals that know what they're doing and actually work WITH the devs, then it would be good.

However, we all know that it would be some total noobs trying to work out something with tools they've never used (actually nobody would have used them, but semi-pros would know the base). It happens in every game that opens to modding; look NFS4 for example. At the base, probably one of the best NFS made, but it went crap when people began to make stuff for it. And it wasn't even a multiplayer online game...

The facts are: with the amount of content available in this demo, people should not even be able to keep playing it over and over. As I said, most demos are either very limited in content, either very limited in time. LFS is none of both.

Yes, this is a must to all multiplayer-based games. In fact, the whole chat system is currently pretty bad. Here's what I recognise as problems:

- Impossibility to scroll up (and back down) on the chat.
- Impossibility to whisper (type a message to a person only). This is not absolutly required, but think about it, it cuts a lot of unwanted messages. Also, for server with one-language rules, it would be great for two racers who want to change in their language.
- There are a lot of insim messages that somehow go trought the chat system that are basically unwanted; say someone types something to get an information and everybody receives it, that kind of thing.
- Making the whole thing more customizable would help, change font, font size, add smilies, all that would make it better to the eye and more user-friendly.

However, if we look at it, LFS chat system has mostly always been the same. Scawen is probably aware that it needs a bit of work, but as we know has much more work to do, a lot of it being more important than that.

Hmm, in most games out there, the demo is either much more limited on content, or the full game limited on time. LFS actually grants way much more than other games. Don't complain, if you want more, just buy it. The meaning of a demo is not to get people with no money to play, it's to get people buy the actual game.

Put yourself in the place of the people selling this. The demo is a marketing thing, not a free pass to content.

Yes, of course, i'm not saying that physics are not important, or that it's better to develop something else than them. I'm just saying that you can't develop the physics and nothing else for a while, say to make the physics perfect without going somewhere else too.

Remember that Scawen is not alone. It's true that you can't release a patch with cosmetic changes only, as there are other things affected by them, but you can't also release a physics only patch, or let's say patches without eventually having something else. They've got to work in cimbiose as they've got different things to do.

And it's what we've seen in the past; remember the bmw f1 patch, correcting some physics and cosmetic changes too.

What seems sure to me is that physics being the strong point of the game doesn't mean only develop them and nothing else. This is the leading path to a very unbalanced game (i.e. any console racing game; awesome graphics but crappy physics).

Also, as far as I know, a drifting track in LFS (or in fact anything espeically made for drift) DOESN'T exist. What I mean is that the game is made for people who primairly want to race with grip. The drifters can still drift, I don't care, but nothing was ever said about making drifting track or drifting cars; just use what's there.

Physics still need to be updated, but since LFS is a bit behind on what is possible to do on a lot of other points, they'd need to be updated first. It's all about balance.
