It seems to me the ultimate cause of the crash is the end of the curb throwing you back into the other car. Had it not been there, both cars would have probably stayed very close one to another, but not made contact, assuming you would have had to step on the grass a bit

Nice driving, but I prefered mostly all the other tracks to this one, it just seems kind of boring; there's no notably height change, and the corners seem pretty dull :P Oulton and Cadwell seem much more interesting and fun to drive ^^

Quote from [DUcK] :Yeah that's a good idea - but been suggested a long while back.. back in the biggie days :o
I think the reason they threw it out the door, was because you'd have to just go that slow on the out lap so your tires don't get burnt, and if you make a mistake on your hotlap, then you have to repeat the process all over again.. if it was a long track such as kygp long, then that'd be a 3min + (depending what car) out lap. Maybe they should just start the hotlaps at the 2nd last split

Agreed, especially if you're doing a UF1 hotlap on a track like Aston Historic or something (whichever is the longest). However, if we're seeking realism, this is one of a lot of elements that are inconvenient, but realistic.

I'm just trying to convince myself, it CAN'T possibly be worse than last winter, right? By the time it was Christmas, we had enough snow for a whole winter, and by march we had enough for two winters.

Hang on, I thought you Aussies ate kangaroo, isn't that true? I heard that, like everything you taste the first time, it tastes like chicken.

Maybe you've also been deluded into thinking it was chicken while you've really been eating kangaroo for so long

Well, people are all like: "Well, it's F1, it's got to be this way, it's the ultimate racing sport, ffs! It's normal that it's boring to watch and totally uncompetitive! Ultimate technology and drivers create races where the racers end the race at 30 seconds from one another, it's just normal!"

Unless there's rain. Rain is the answer. Think about it. When during the F1 season do you get an interesting starting grid? An interesting GP? When there's rain. Just a bit of water and BOOM you end up with a Force India getting the pole and square face to win a GP in his futuristic pile of 2005 technology! Let's just do all races back to back, all during the same period: the rain season in Bangladesh.

Rather more seriously, another alternative is either to make F1 more interesting, or watch NASCAR. I've just started watching NASCAR. Okay, the cars are not as impressive, and they don't turn right unless the race is over, but it's incredibly more interesting. Everything F1 does wrong, NASCAR does right. It's competitive, entertaining and more strategic. They end the race with like 20 drivers within 5 seconds, and even if they're not in the leader's lap they get to be seen on TV all the time, because it's an oval! Besides, that just creates more crashin opportunities, and crashing opportunities are fun opportunities!

Think about it, there's nothing in a race like a good crash - even in a F1 race. Crashes are not only plain interesting to watch, they also mess up the teams' strategies, which creates mayhem and ultimatly a more interesting race and result. When you think that in NASCAR they have to actually plan their race strategies assuming a certain number of crashes, or even hoping for a crash, you're in for a good race

Or you could just make F1 more competitive and fun to watch.
I do know I sound quite sarcastic, but I actually enjoy watching NASCAR much more than F1

Saw Eagle Eye, it's not bad, and quite entertaining, but I don't like the fact that it's another movie with the "super computer develops a plan for the greater good which has 'destroy humanity' in it." It's a bit like I, Robot, with a mix of 2001. If you're not watching it telling yourself it's plagiarism, though, it's good.

I also saw Body of Lies, and I can't understand why it's doing so poorly in the US. It's a very good movie; extremely timely, and almost believable .

Agreed, in the Montoya years and a bit prior to that, Cart was an awesome series; it just kind of dissolved when he left.

I think what the difference here is, though, is that series such as the old Cart and IRL are composed of private teams, not of automobile manufacturer (at least in most part, there might be some, I don't know). It doesn't matter so much if the engine, or, say, the chassis is standardized in those series since they don't build them, they buy it.

However, when you're called Ferrari, you're making supercars. When you're making supercars, one of the crucial element is the engine, and if you're told that the series you participate in will stop you from building one of those crucial element, there's no point in staying. I just don't see Ferrari staying with standardized engine and only the chassis and aeros for them to tweak.

'Gotta understand the poor folks, they more or less got kicked out of G-B, right? At least they wanted to keep a part of it on their flag. Then they just added a couple of stars that look like a question mark, and voila, you've got the perfect dominion flag. We in Canada just didn't bother and used the Union Jack for 60 years before putting it in the top left corner for a 100 more. Huzzah for the leaf!

Quote from Joris :If my memory is not playing tricks on me Ferrari has threatened to leave F1 before (although I i am not sure when and what the occasion was). It's just a way they will always get their way. Just like a spoilt baby in a candy store.

If standard engines are introduced F1 would not be place for car manufacturers anymore. Just a playing ground for "garagistes" like Enzo Ferrari called them.

IMHO this does not mean the sport would be less interesting. But things like KERS should be thrown out of the window when the sport is taken away from manufacturers.

I can not imagine there will not be a top single seater formula when the smoke clears. (and I do not call something like A1GP top).

I must say that I'm getting bored of having a 4 to 8 player championship while there's 20 cars on the field. You could just get rid of everything except ferrari, renault, mclaren and bmw and it would be about the same thing. If everybody not only had the same engine, but the same car, F1 would be MUCH more interesting. Imagine having 20 cars all within 3 seconds or so.

Quote from mcintyrej :Hahahah thats brilliant.

"We have the best engine and want to have an unfair advantage, if its fair then we'll just drop out."

The whole point is that they designed their engine better than the others. If you spent a lot of time developing something to improve your performance and that when you're done you're asked to share it with others so that they can actually catch up with you, would you like it? Probably not.

I agree that there needs to be some kind of change made to F1 so that it isn't such a money-pit, but in my opinion it doesn't involve making all cars the same. Reducing costs is a good opportunity to move forward toward new technologies.

Their plan is flawed, and will always be flawed if they try to reduce costs too much. The goal of F1 is to develop new technologies, yes, and that involves massive investments. If they want F1 to remain interesting and move towards the future, they will have no choice but to invest up to some point, either in new and more interesting technologies, or in evolution of the current one (like it's always been).

In the end, reducing cost will inevitably make F1 more boring, and they can either keep it the way it is, or make it more interesting by developing new stuff. It's inevitable that at some point people will just be like: "Hang on, these guys do like 2 MPG, just for the heck of it and don't bother developing technologies that do not require petrol?".

F1 cannot stay the way it is for much longer. I'd say that within the next 15 years it will have to move off petrol to keep it's audience, and it's viability.

Quote from S14 DRIFT :Because of the physics involved when driving on ice (both in game and RL), I can actually imagine using slicks would DECREASE braking distances, because, unlike water, you cannot 'channel' ice out of the way, and the majority of treadblocks on most higher performance tyres (Goodyear EagleF1's, Yokohama AO48s etc) aren't deep nor sharp enough to dig into the ice. So a slick tyre would increase the contact area between you and the surface

Only way to combat that problem propperly is using studded tyres or chains (more practical for you and me)

Or not driving on ramps made of ice O_O

I understand your point of view, but I think these configurations are there to be changed quickly, because you don't necessarily want them to be on or off forever.

For instance, people like to be able to show or hide results by just pressing a short-cut. If you don't usually want them up, but would like to see something in the result, you just have to press ctrl+tab and you can see it and switch it off right away.

Same thing with the driver in/out option. Depending on the setup you're doing, you might want to toggle or not the fuel and driver weight.

However, I agree that those are options which could be both in the setup menu and accessible by short-cut.

I believe the hot lap start position for every track and configuration is the last split to the start/finish line. I think the last split on WE reverse (the first one on normal) is less than 20 seconds from the start/finish line (at full speed). It must indeed hard to get to a good speed and do a hot lap.

What most people do anyway is go backwards a bit and do some donuts to heat up the tires; especially on WE since it's such a tire-muncher.

It's a good suggestion, and I can't believe it's not been fixed already: the hot lap system isn't perfect. In my opinion, the ability to ruin a lap by, say, hitting a wall on the split before the start line is completely useless. I understand that you can gain some speed by short-cutting before the start line or something, but I don't see how hitting a wall prior to starting your lap should improve it.

For the starting position, it would just be good to leave from the pits and start counting hot laps on the next lap. The tires would have time to get heated up, and it would be more realistic anyway.

Technically even with completely slick tires it would be possible to brake on ice, it would just require more time. As long as there's some kind of friction, there's no reason for an object to retain its speed, assuming it's not propelled in some way.

Now, I haven't personally tried it as I don't go on ramps, but if it's impossible to brake AND accelerate on the ramps, then they're defying the laws of physics ^^
