IE9 looks pretty good so far. It performs ok in benchmarks, which is like a A grade for Microsoft. I like the looks (more than Chrome, though it's quite similar).

Regarding W7, I really get the feeling some people are just bashing on it because it's a Windows product. As Codie said, once you disable a few things, it's a great OS to work on. Apart from lack of computer requirements, I really don't see why somebody wouldn't upgrade from XP.

Quote from tristancliffe :You've been here a month, haven't asked many times, and clearly don't get the point of LFS or the decisions not to allow user content or accept 'help' from the community.

Besides, am I the only one that thinks the current level of detail is actually fine, and that the level of detail proposed above (and in GT5 etc) is a bit excessive? I'm all for realism at every level, but I don't think there is any benefit from having every last detail on the car.

Then again, why not? Eric's working pace should warrant incredibly high detailed models, right? Besides, it's established that graphics are a part of a sim as well, just not the priority. It's not as if Scawen had to work on those, though. There's nothing stopping Eric from working on all the models he wants.

So this thing is coming along soon, and on every website I've checked, reviewers are saying something along the lines of "interesting styling" and they put the styling both in pros and cons. Now, I have a question about that. What does it take in terms of ugliness for a car to get bad initial reviews? I'm ready to bet that the Aztec was getting those neutral reviews at first too.

Anyway, look at the thing and tell me what you think (I think it's awful).

Quote from zeugnimod :Yeah, they said that included in the initial S3 release will be Rockingham and most likely one more new car but more cars and tracks will be added along the way [...]

Hmm...

I think it's reasonable to assume that an outsider who looks at LFS without all our knowledge could be scared of the time between updates. I mean, somebody who lands on lfs.net to this day can doubt the continuous upgrade status of the project (and only the server downtime updates will tell that the project has had any activity since November '09). So, with an outside view, and let's say a reasonable doubt about further upgrades' development time frame, if one learned that in order to obtain one more track and one more car he needs to pay 12GBP, he'd be right (imo) to avoid the purchase.

Put it this way: if I'd never played LFS, I'd probably still buy it for what is it now, but I wouldn't spend more in order to receive potential further updates. I'd see it as too much of a risk.

Quote from bberger :Hi folks,

I am currently running LFS on an AMD Phenom X4 9950BE with 8GB RAM - BUT: I've got an onboard gf 8200 chipset combined with a passive 8600GT grapihcs card.

Must have's:
>= 70 FPS (currently ~35FPS)
nVidia (because I need that 3 lcd's up and running for work
passive (because my pc should be SILENT around 0dbA)

Should have's:
cost < 150€
70fps @ max details
able to run rFactor / RACE on on triple head with low / mid details @ around 40-50fps min.

Hum, you don't have to limit yourself to nVidia, ATI supports 3 screens as well (eyefinity). My question though is: passive, really? My guess is that you record something and that the room must be completely silent? The thing is, though, that you're going to be limited to the power you can muster out of a passively cooled GPU. Personally, if I had to run a PC that needs to be completely silent, yet keep some graphics power, I'd go for a very silent case, and a graphics card that's renowned to be silent (there are some on the market, just not the reference coolers).

... but seriously, 0db? That means the case can't have a single fan...

Well that seems to be a fix

One thing to note is that the fix is for AGP cards, so if your card is PCI-E, look for PCI Standard Host CPU Bridge instead of CPU to AGP.

Hi.

Well, a freeze by itself isn't a very telling problem, as there are numerous things which can cause it. The difference between the first and second freezes that you describe here is that in the first case video link is maintained, while it is lost in the second case. However, again, this isn't very telling as you're experiencing both.

The third scenario is a bit more useful, pointing straight to a .dll, but more information (perhaps a picture) about the bluescreen would help. If the computer restarts automatically and you don't have time to read the full blue screen, do the following:
  1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System
  2. Go to Advanced
  3. Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings...
  4. Under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart"
After a quick Google search, it isn't obvious that this particular .dll is involved in one error only (as it is often the case with .dlls).

To troubleshoot, (and this is a rule of thumb concerning problems in which you can suspect the GPU for any reason), I'd start by swapping the GPU for another one, which you know for a fact works, and is of course compatible with the system. If the problem still occurs after the swap, then we might have to dig further ^^

So essentially what you're saying is discriminate against all kids regardless of the way they actually are? There are some kids more mature than adults, you know.

Besides, why assume that everybody who plays NFS doesn't know how to drive, or can't enjoy LFS for what it is? Some people enjoy both.

I'm getting tired of this elitism some people seem to favor in LFS.

Just my current feeling about things...

I've long ago lost the belief that the community as a whole could somehow accomplish the seemingly impossible and get Scavier to change their work methods. I'm glad to see more of Scawen lately, though. The recent posts of Scawen give me a better feeling about the development. I mean, even though the progress isn't faster, it's nice not to be left in the dark. Kudos for that.

Yet... I can't help but feel a little awkward about LFS. To me, LFS will always be the perfect example of the project that could have been so much more. Who knew, back in 2003, that LFS would be at this point in its development in 2010? Back then, most of us would only refer to 2010 as an exaggeration joke when people asked when LFS would be done.

So my bottom line is, I respect Scavier's work a lot, but I never could understand Scavier's rationale about this project.

I think it comes down to whether these are the actual models built by Eric. If so, I'd say that's probably copyrighted. If they just used LFS' models to get an idea of what the real cars actually look like, I guess it's no big deal, though.

France did this for security reasons, but I've got to admit, it's pretty useless for the most part. I understand the security issues of having a person wear a burka in an airport, or a bank, but does that really warrant a straight and full ban? There should just be a list of places you can't go with your face hidden, simple as that. If you enter there with anything covering your face, they send Bob with a chainsaw on you.

It's a bit the same as having to leave a backpack at the front of the store when you enter. It happens to me from time to time, and I just remove my backpack, go on with my shopping and pick it up at the end. I know I wouldn't have stolen anything anyway, and odds are that nobody with a burka's going to steal anything, but you can't count on odds when regarding to security.

Actually, at least over here, the requirements to become a cop are rather high. They range from very good (over 85% or so) academical results to, obviously, very good physical conditions. And I know that for a fact, I've seen a couple people that successfully applied, and they weren't dumb.

Now, I must say that a cop that comes by a burning vehicle and just goes: "well, let's just call the firemen, that's not our problem" is probably jaded at best, but most likely incompetent.

And, ya, the whole RCMP thing... that dates from the days we were proud to be part of the British empire. So I blame yous sires.

Quote from DevilDare :You mean like in "hacker" movies?

It pisses me off actually. They just sit there and bash their keyboards and code magically appears on screen that does super awesome commands and whatnot. Argghhh.....

The best was Swordfish were the guy actually creates a computer virus he can look at as a cube on the screen.

Anyway, nice update Scawen, but I just don't understand how you say you can't do updates in the first part, then go on to do such an update in the second part ^^

Those kind of updates are pretty much what's needed. I don't think people want super-specifics regarding what's the last thing you tried to implement and so on. Just a broad view of what's going on is plenty, and doesn't leave us in the dark.

I'm really getting tired of the whole arguing about the devs owing us something or nothing, or this and that being promised or not.

The devs never promised more content, and you paid for what you got. The rest is, indeed, extra. Stop arguing about that.

Now, that said, it's not a reason to work this slow, and release so few updates about what's going on.

Oh, and a nice point was brought up about the fact that if a website hasn't been updated in a while, people who arrive on it for the first time will sometimes move on without further thought (I probably would).

Quote from deggis :The devs basically stopped or reduced giving updates because any mention of some new idea would in the end lead to more whining if the idea didn't materialize or deliver in promised time like the VW... but they certainly do not have problems with ignoring* the whining right now for another reason. They probably won't change this but I think it's better to have whining about a patch that was delayed (at least it shows the game is alive) than bitching about lack of communication and going even as far as declaring the game dead.

* I mean like not allowing it to affect everything they do

Whining's going to happen no matter what. The thing is, though, that if you post good and numerous updates, you'll have the whining of only the easily pissed off people, that won't be happy with the actual content of those update. If, however, you post next to no updates (the current situation), you get a lot more people pissed off, as the current situation prooves.

To me, there's also a matter of respect in there. I mean, people who bother to come on the forums very often, in some cases daily, definitely have admiration for the work that's been done, and I'm sure I'm not the only one sad about the lack of progress and updates. I know we all paid and they don't owe us anything, but I'm just saying that if I had this great a number of followers hoping for me to work on something, I'd at least keep them updated on my progress.

For what it's worth, I'd had a similar issue at work, last week. Computer would post, windows load bar would complete, but then a black screen with only a movable cursor in it would appear. Turns out the problem only occured if 4GB memory was installed instead of 2GB. Solved it by updating BIOS (it was kind of an old wokrstation :schwitz.

Probably not your specific problem, but still worth a try, assuming your motherboard's BIOS is easy to update.

First thing I'd do is test the HDD in another computer, just to rule out the motherboards and other hardware as the cause of the problem. If the hard drive doesn't work in another computer, then you've got yourself at best a reinstallation to do, and at worst a dead hard drive.

Well, I recently had to shop for a laptop myself, and my choice landed upon Dell. I spent a lot of time searching the web and it seemed to me that they had the best deals. Also, the Dell website (at least in Canada) is much better built than most other websites (not allowing customization, etc).

I've got myself a Core i3 laptop, with 500GB HDD, 4GB ram for about 700$.

Quote from Intrepid :... and as it turns out the wh ... is one big waste of money

Can't say I'm surprised really

Olympic games are seen much more as a long term, "open to the world" investment, rather than an immediate source of profit. Any country hoping to host the games and make immediate money out of it will most likely present awful, awful games.

About the mascots, the main problem I have is that I don't know what the hell these things are. The Vancouver 2010 mascots were by all means quite pedobear looking ish (http://www.mbarrick.net/livejo ... quatchi_miga_pedobear.jpg), but they at least had the advantage of looking somewhat like animals (ok, one's a Sasquatch, but still). Those two London things look like nothing at all... except perhaps cyclops penises.

Different games require different performances from either your CPU, GPU or other components. Therefore, it's always a good idea to get the most out of your current computer.

Anyway, it's entirely possible that both luke's CPU and GPUs are bottle-necking him, considering they're not the newest components, especially if he's playing newer games like BFBC2. In such a situation, and if he's not ready to spend hundreds of dollars on new stuff, overclocking remains the best solution.
