Quote from SkyNet :I think that's a bad idea. Let people say what they want to say. Come on, we're not in China for christ's sake!

But we may be in the presence of smaller members of our families. And since when did obsenity become such an irreplaceable part of human vocabulary anyway? Sure if I stub my toe, lose control of my car, or forget to do something really important I'll let a 'colorful metaphor' slip, but otherwise I try to maintain a degree of politeness at all times.
Moving LFS to a different hard drive

I just installed a second hard drive to my PC (300GB). My plan is to move my large media files and games onto that drive to relieve my primary drive (C:\) which is 120GB and very nearly full.

Can I just cut and paste the LFS folder? Will all of the online interaction (skin downloads, connecting etc.) work fine?

I imagine it should but I'd like to make sure before I go ahead and do it.

why is it important to see usernames all the time? the screen name is usually a better representation of the driver and shows if he is on a team etc.

The Ring was always a survival track it seemed. There, more than anywhere, you raced the racetrack, and dealt with other cars if you should happen upon one. Compelling driving for sure, but if you're looking for close compelling racing with other cars, a loooooooong track like the Ring isn't conducive to that. There are always exceptions of course.

One wacky idea I came up with was to have a 1 lap trophy dash in UF1's. The car is so drop-dead-slow and easy to drive that most people could wheel it around the Ring reasonably well. The racing would be close and 1 lap would last probably 10 minutes. Neat little concept. Racing at its simplest. First one back to the line wins.

Quote from Shotglass :starting grids ... hard to say if its reasonable though

I suppose that could be accomplished by creating a ploppable grid position and then assigning it a number much like the new route checker system works. It would then be up to the user to plop down enough grid spots where needed and assign them each a number from 1-20.
Additional Auto-X Editor Objects

Sorry in advance if this has been mentioned but I didn't see it in the sticky log.

Here's some things I hope could be added to the autocross editor and to the autocross tracks themselves. Please add to this thread if you have ideas of your own.

All these objects could come in short and long segments to reduce total objects used:
- Armco barrier
- Wooden barrier a-la Blackwood Car Park
- Concrete wall (like what surrounds the existing tracks - not the red/white barriers)
- Concrete wall with catch fencing
- Small grandstand
- Tall grandstand

Other things I'd like to see:
- flagstand
- finish line marking (checkered)
- bridge
- ramps available at all tracks
- option to reverse the default starting grids at both auto-x arenas

All of those I believe are minor things that could realistically be implemented. Please add your own but keep them sensible. Perhaps this could be stickied if it grows into a good list.

Quote from DratsaB :There was one particularly good one that went to the out skirts of the BL carpark, was a great layout, not sure who made that one though..

That was mine too. A personal favorite of mine but the long trek to get to the actual track makes it hard to use. People go crazy when the light goes green and half the field gets knocked out before they even arrive at the track.

Just browsing through the Test Patch forum and the U16 thread I found out that the next super-patch (incompatible) will include an admin option to disallow resetting.

With that as well as the current InSim thing that kicks pitters as well as the new auto-x marshal zones to stop wrong way drivers, all of the Banger Racing rules can be enforced by the server!

Quote from XCNuse :uh.. did you read what this is about racingsimfan?

yes in fact I did and the point I was making was that, IMO, if you want punishment for car damage, the tire modelling does give you that in some instances.
RacingSimFan

OTOH though LFS excells at tire modelling which means that while there may be little in the way of aerodynamic damage, the resultant evasive/corrective/off-track manouvering will kill your tires and penalize you that way.

Quote from tristancliffe :Do you remember that time Nigel Mansell got a lifetime motorsport ban when he overtook Mario Andretti on the right? Or when Al Unser Jr was insta-banned for 24 hours for brushing a wall.

This is the winner right here.

Oval racing in real life has always been close and dicey. Drivers race each other rather than race the race track as in road racing. Ultimately the drivers need the freedom to race each other hard because oval racing can be boring as hell if it is neutered by too many transparent rules that limit what drivers can do in their cars. The only limits should be the laws of physics, and common sense. If a driver is incapable of controlling his/her vehicle under those conditions then he/she has no business being in the server.

I personally don't race in the [FM] oval server very often because of:

- the transparent passing rules as mentioned above
- the distracting message clutter
- the spectatron doing its thing to anyone who puts a wheel wrong
- the lack of common sense among many of the competitors
- the enormous slipstream that makes the already restricted passing meaningless until the last lap

Quote from ayrton senna 87 :but they target me, and sit in the track reversing into me when i pass by.

I was experiencing this too today. 2 teammates in particular. They would play dead then reverse into me pushing me into the wall.illepall

Hope that doesn't become a trend or Bangers will fall from grace even faster.

Depends on who you're with and how many are in the server. More people=more chaos which means you'll get hit no matter what.

After the carnage of turn1/lap1 there's usually 2 or 3 guys chasing each other down for the win and one can't blame them for dodging the wrecked cars because they're fighting for position. It is a race after all, albeit a very dirty one.

But if you're out of contention for the win there's no excuse for tooling around and not hitting anybody. (a) its boring, (b) it gets people pissed off at you.

So, IMO, general etiquette of Bangers:

- If you're fighting for the win, go ahead and race
- If you're out of contention (and by that I mean the leader is more than a straightaway ahead of you), CAUSE CHAOS!!!

It's official. TV press conference going on right now for those in NA that get Speed Channel.

Montoya's new boss (and old boss from CART) quoted him as saying "I want to get back to racing" as if to suggest that he's tired of F1's lopsided racing with only a few teams capable of winning.

I guess he's tired of F1. 6 seasons of being a bridesmaid at best and not a championship-calibre ride in sight for '07.

Even the oval goes quiet when Europe is asleep and all that's left is us North Americans (kind of ironic considering oval racing is a distinctly North American style of motorsport).

At least more than 6 cars took the start this time...though they did try damn hard to make sure only 6 cars made it past lap 2...

Quote from 510N3D :well there are 2 ways to go on the oval. One way is your way. Be as ignorant as possible, block as much as possible to stay/gain positions.
Stay allways left and pass allways right to interupt the " race flow " and to confuse everybody around you.

Be prepared to get overtaken in the same sick way you did. Be prepared to follow and hopefully lose the (bump)-drafting cars.

the other way is teamwork (to a certain point/lap if wanted) (+bumpdrafting if possible or allowed/wanted by both sides)
To win the race gets more and more secondary the more fun you have in the race itselfs which counts most imho.

In Papys Nascar Racing i have seen alot of those guys from the first kind and more then 90% only won 1 race in a row. So it is in LFS.

I agree but when teamwork time is up (ie. on the main straight coming to the finish line) what can the defending driver do to maintain his position without blocking and weaving like a total jerk? Nothing. There is little to nothing that a defending driver can do to shake the following driver out of his draft once and for all when time comes to end any alliances and battle for the win.

Even in real life open-wheel single-seater oval racing there is an aero push that the defending driver can use to his advantage. And yes there is an aero push in LFS but the draft is so fricken huge that the trailing driver can understeer up out of the fast line but still suck up to the leading car on the following straight.

Unfortunately one has to face the fact that passing on the LFS oval under the current physics is way too easy and the defending driver is...well...defenseless.

I watch oval racing all the time. I've studied moves both offensive and defensive. I've raced ovals in other sims. NONE of the defensive tactics that work in real life work in LFS simply because the draft is so huge so close to the lead car.

Watch this. Look how close the 2 cars are to each other yet there's no enormous slingshot.

OK, 2 gripes from me:

1) Munkies...change your name. '(OM) Oval Munkies' sounds like you are intentionally ripping off '[FM] Oval Junkies' just to spite them. If you want your server to be truly different, start by changing your group name to something that does not resemble any other team or server name. When I first saw your server name in the list, my immediate thought was that this was some guy or group that got pissed off by or banned from [FM] and is now out to spite them. If it's that obvious to me then it's obvious to everyone.

2) Oval racing in LFS in general. Too draft-dependent for my liking. You lose the lead draft=you don't have a hope in hell of winning unless they all wreck. The draft should be only half as potent as it currently is. And you should have to lift for at least some of the corners. Right now every car in LFS can go around the oval flat-out with a proper setup. I agree there is strategy to drafting but for all intents and purposes the only way to defend your position is to be a total sleazebag and run the guy beside you off the road or into the wall. Again it's because of the draft.

Sorry to clog up your RFB thread further but I too am a left-foot braker. Do it in my real car too but only because my right foot is in rough shape right now and left-foot braking in my real car minimizes the amount of stress on my right foot.

But in the process my left foot has become just as sensitive and agile as my right foot. I've always LFB'ed in games since I began using a wheel but would love to master heel-toe if only I had a clutch pedal.

Another thing that would be cool is a Ventrilo or Teamspeak server specifically for this game server so that we Oddballs could voice chat with each other.

I wouldn't necessarily call them wreckers. They did however demonstrate a severe lack of skill with LX6, probably the toughest car in LFS to master even with the new physics.

They don't know how to deal with reduced grip and no aerodynamic downforce yet.

But the LRF combo is something we should keep using IMO. It's underused but yet the most satisfying combo to master. Tons of fun.
