PtP's origins were in keeping with traditions of racing. Back when CART(ChampCar) had multiple engine suppliers who were allowed a measure of inventiveness, Honda(i think) came up with a button that allowed the engine to run at maximum allowed turbo boost for as long as the button was pushed. Once let go, the boost would return to a more conservative level set by each team to make sure their engines lasted the distance. There were no limits of any kind imposed on use of the button. The strategy was to make sure not to blow up the engine by running it too hard for too long. The engines in those days were, like F1, run on the verge of detonation and teams and engine manufacturers pushed that envelope as hard as they dared in order to go faster.
Now with restrictions much tighter and spec engines owned by the series itself and rev-limited, Champ Car turned PtP into a gimmick by slapping a time limit on it and wiring it up to the pop-off valve to simply move from one series-mandated limit to another.
Under the old way, PtP was an innovation used by teams to push engines even closer to the breaking point in the search for extra temporary power when needed. But this way is just a gimmick to create a better "show".
In keeping with the thread on cars, post in here what you'd like to see in S3 as far as tracks go.
Because there aren't yet any signs that the developers are going after licenses for real-life tracks, please keep your choices fictional. (ie. don't say Nurburgring or Spa no matter how much we want them). Rather, choose a style as you'll see in my choices.
- a short, low-banked oval, suitable to the FOX and isn't flat out all the way around. Make it American in atmosphere.
- a country roads circuit, like the Isle of Man TT
- a German/Belgian style track that winds through forests and features long straights and fast turns (ideal for FO8)
- an airport course using runways and taxiways
Me and a couple of my teammates have been running FO8's on Aston National.
It takes lots of skill but it becomes a lot of fun to drive this car on the other tracks (ie. not KY Oval). If we can get enough serious and skilled racers we might be able to start a league with it.
SO Town Course
FE Gold
KY GP Long
WE Int'l
AS Club
Also (and I know it goes against your wr > 1min rule) I'd like to submit a 'write-in' vote for SO Classic because it is a good rythm circuit and would make a great season finale with Town Course beginning the series.
As for Point #1 there is an option to disallow mid-race joining (ie. switching from spectator to on-track mode) but not many servers do that. Don't know why not but oh well.
Our heroes (the LFS Devs) have said in interviews that they would be interested in securing licenses if it is worthwhile.
As the Nordschleife currently only appears on PS2 games Gran Turismo 4 and Project Gotham Racing 2, there is no holder of a PC license for it.
Wouldn't it be a dream come true if LFS could secure a license for the whole Nurburgring complex? In keeping with the tradition of having major venues divided up into sub layouts, the Nurburgring could easily be divided into the following layouts:
Grand Prix (the present F1 track)
Sprint (using the hairpin that bypasses the Dunlop curve section)
Public (Nordschleife in public day configuration)
24H (Nordschleife + Grand Prix)
1. Have all parts available for all tracks. I'd like to have the Blackwood jumps at all the tracks just to name 1 item.
2. Add rumble strips to the list. Make them vary in radius and height.
3. Open up the whole Autocross park so that one could make a custom track that takes in the autocross area, the skid pad, and the drag strip.
4. Create the ability to set location for an entire starting grid, pit stalls, join locations, and pit in/out speed limit checkpoints so that a custom track in the Autocross or BL Car Park can have a full starting grid anywhere and a working pit lane.
Those are just a few ideas I feel could make the Editor so much more useful.
