Pretty decent idea. One of the things I think is good about iRacing (without having tried it, that is) is that it groups people of similar skill together in races, so no matter how fast or slow you are you'll almost always have people to race with. Like Neilser said I'm not sure how difficult it would be to implement and how well it would work. But a nice idea nevertheless

Whats the online side like? Never played GTA online before...

IMO GTA is mainly a game to be played in single player mode. Complete the storyline, it's pretty decent. I've joined a few games online but honestly didn't really enjoy it much. I've never seen the fun in multiplayer GTA but that's just me; I've seen plenty of people say some of their best times gaming were online with GTA 4

I agree with three_jump. Plus, being fast (and thus winning races, winning points and progressing through the ranks) doesn't necessarily equal having racing skills, and vice versa. There's plenty of people who are blazingly fast but don't know how to properly race in a close battle with other drivers.

I'm not very fast, I'm usually somewhere middle pack, but I am consistent, aware of my surroundings and can race side by side and bumper to bumper with another driver for laps on end (provided the other driver knows how to race closely as well). It usually takes me quite a bit of time to get enough points to get to the next rank, and I can't be arsed to do that.

That being said, though, z-ro does have a point; there are lots of "normal" servers around, it's just that most of them are empty and the populated ones just happen to use some kind of ranking system. Not much you can do about that.

Also, I'm really not too fussed about this because like I said, for the past 2 years or so I have almost exclusively raced on the dMr server so this problem doesn't affect me, but I can see how it can give a wrong impression to a newcomer.

I noticed this, too, the other day when I tried to race on a server other than the one I'm normally on. Tried to join but got kicked back to spectate with a message that I needed a certain laptime. Didn't tell me where I needed to set that laptime or anything. Then I tried another server and there I could only drive the UF1 until I got enough points, like three_jump said.

I guess this is what Fordman meant with this thread. I had no idea it was this way as I normally race exclusively on Dead Men Racing, where you can just hop on and have clean, fair and fun races with mature people, no matter how fast or slow you are.

Quote from master_lfs.5101 :There is Rigs of Rods

Not really a trucking game. From what I understand it kind of follows the same concept of Racer in that you download user created vehicles/tracks that you want, and the majority of those are shit. Nothing I've seen of RoR has impressed me in the slightest. Driving around in some sort of truck in a completely barren landscape without any goal or objective isn't my idea of fun, no matter how good the physics are.

"Two thousand ten" actually, without the "and". But the 2nd option is close enough so I voted for that

Quote from Postman Pat :Even if an update with peerless physics were released tomorrow, there'd still be the flat, featureless tracks, that for many who've tried iRacing, they won't want to go back to.

If you know you won't, in the end, pay for iRacing, then I'd seriously suggest staying well away from the free demos - it will likely ruin everything else for you. I dislike almost everything about iRacing (still) and tried it just to compare the physics, but the on-track experience of feeling connected to the road, bumps and undulations means I can't see the point of any other sim.

Not just iRacing. nKp and quality rFactor mods & tracks pretty much ruined LFS for me in the same way. Coming back to LFS from any of those sims it just feels so appallingly bland it's hard to really enjoy it anymore.

So how do you feel nKp's physics compare to those of LFS then? I know nKp is generally regarded as the sim for openwheelers. Obviously since I've never driven one in real life I can't really pass judgement but I do feel nKp comes a lot closer to what I would think an openwheeler would feel like than LFS does.

Quote from tristancliffe :But what if you you do play it occasionally (along with other sims), and genuinely think that LFS's physics are the closest to the racing car(s) you drive in real life (albeit with some flaws - i.e. at larger slip angles/percentages; losing/regaining grip, wheelspin starts etc)?

Then that's good Did you feel that was directed at you? It wasn't directed at anyone in specific.

Quote from JeffR :I still think there will be a fan base that likes the "feel" of LFS.

Oh definitely. They'll all sit on the forum saying how great LFS is and how nothing else even comes close to it, while not having actually played LFS for years

Good post, by the way, some very good points.

Quote from mutt107 :natural causes??? how the **** can you die at 28 from natural causes???

A guy who was a regular customer of mine back at my previous job also died at around that age. Was as healthy as you can be, didn't smoke or do drugs, didn't have any diseases or heart conditions... nothing. All of a sudden one day something in or around his heart ruptured (I don't remember what exactly it was) and he died. Went very fast, too. He was dead in an instant, basically, no warning pains or whatever. Must be horrible. He had a wife and two young children and a flourishing business, too.

Scary to think you can just drop dead like that even if you are in good health

Quote from wien :All these threads do is provide a place where whiners of all persuasions can get together and have a big 'ol groupwank.

Well at least all the "whining" is centralized in one thread, so that's a good thing at least.

I don't think all posts in this thread are whining, by the way. Some people bring up very good points; I actually enjoy reading a lot of them.

Quote from Furiously-Fast :Yes I agree development speed is slow, but LFS is what the devs do in their spare time.

Are you sure about that? This is the first time I've seen that said. I always thought that Scawen lived off the money from S2 licenses. I'm sure Eric and Victor have other jobs as their involvement in LFS is much smaller than Scawen's.

Quote from Torben :(...) a) I bet almost every moaner here has at least one car, he has barley driven, or a track config on which he/she has done just a few laps.
If you put it together, LFS has an incredible amount of combos to try, but most drivers just stick to their usual combos and start moaning..

While you are right that LFS offers a great amount of interesting combinations, it's silly to expect that everyone drives every car an equal amount. It's only normal that some people will prefer a certain type of car. There's people who don't like driving singleseaters while there are other people who only drive singleseaters. That's just the type of cars they like to drive, and you can't say "hey, you have no right to be bored, you haven't driven the UF1 or any of the tin tops yet!".

And I bet you haven't done many - if any - laps on Westhill in the UF1, either, to give just one example Some combos just don't work.
