Current Specs:

AMD Athlon 1.3GHz oc'd with a heatsink from a 2.1GHz and a 100mm fan.
1GB DDR RAM (mini ATX limit to 333 mhz)
NVidia 5200FX
nForce 2 mobo
mini ATX e-machines case (painted white)
300watt oem POS PSU

----------------------------------------------------------------------
What I want to keep:
My sweet 2.1 speakers
my 15" LCD monitor
My IDE 160GB HD
IDE DVD-RW drive.

I have been out of the PC hardware word for a while, I know stuff has gotten cheaper now, I want to get the most likely to not die out cpu socket, mobo that will last, etc. I'm ordering EVERYTHING fro newegg!

$800~1000 USD to work with (for the block alone)

case
Please recomend a good PSU and non-psu equpped case.

processor
Intel Core2duo (but dunno which)
Also I was wondering about an aftermarket heatsink, or if the stock is enough.

motherboards
I like ASUS, and Nvidia Nforce chips, so nforce 4 ultra good?

onboard audio: I don't want to spend money on a aux card

The new ones still have IDE drive plugs, right?

I also always have people say "don't forget to get a SATA HD with the new mobo" why? will my IDE one not work? expain please, thank you.

GFX
Umm, I hear some people say ATI... I like Nvidia. I would like a decent card.. 8 series, PCI-E slot

Umm, but what's better, a 7series top of the line, or an 8 series gts? Price, preformance, etc.

RAM
DDR-2, 800MHz is needed for dual core, right? Do I really NEED 2GB or ram nowadays?

I am going to be buying everything in August 18th or later

wanted to do a little reasearch beforehand. Hopefully, the pices will drop within the month.

"Why is driving is usualy thought of as a man's sport?" asked some woman the other day.

I left her with this: cockpit
I didn't know a 440MX still existed? lol

Hmm, I have a simmilar problem, but i have 1.3 Athlon, 1GB of ram, and a Nvidia 5200FX. I bought more ram, (had 512) and the 5200, but my biggest problem is the fawking A socket CPU. I am NOT willing to spend the amount the best socket A example costs, (more than a decent AMD 64 X2) I also have a nForce 2 chip, but it's in mini-ATX format, which limits the gig of ram I bought down to 333MHz from 400... bummer, right?

so I'm just going to get a whole new block w/o the HD and CD-rom. It's going to be a good 800 USD, but, while that seems steep, I think it's quite a good investment.

EDIT: but, if I had a 2.0CPU, I would just get a 6800GT or an ATI equivalent, since the CPU is the biggest bottleneck atm.
Task Manager Priority Settings? (searched)

I wa wondering if it would be a good idea to cange the priority settings for lfs.exe in the task manager? Would it help anything? Would it be a good idea to do this for programs such as Azureus, etc? I couldn't find much on this matter, through I'm shure it has to exist. Help please?

ok my pc specs :
Intel Pentium 4 @ 2.02Ghz
256MB Ram :O
GeForce 5700LE 128mb
80gig HDD,
ill guess thats the prob

Ok, how do you have a WAY better than mine proc/mobo/GFX card, but have an 80gig and 256MB or ram when i have a gig? Do you own a dell?

BTW: I'm getting a new comp very soon.

Yes, prabably the thing most of us want out of LFS is da/night and weather/track temperature changes. I just recently aquired Richard Burns Rally, and I think a proper point to point course at night and in the rain using the RB4 would be a blast.

Oh yeah, and some cool mud splatter couldn't hurt, but that's just fancy gimmics...

EDIT: Umm, btw, how much of an elevation chage can LFS do anyway? Blackwood has some nice ec, but when you drive, you barely notice it for some reason... maybe it's just me?

Quote from unseen :I have seriously tried over and over again pushing forward for down gear, and back for up, as it is in most sequential race cars (due to G, inertia and human nature being pretty efficient) and I`m buggered if I can manage it.

I always end up somewhere north of 5th gear in hairpins. Using the manual 6-shifter on my G25 is no problem at all, and it`s what I use as much as I can. I just cannot do the back/up, forward/down thing :weeping:

Dude, I had the same ****ing problem, but as I drive with my eyes, rather than my ass, I've gotten over it after telling myself that's the right way to do it. Now I cant use tiptronic because I keep downshifting when I should be upshifting. I noticed that BMW's tiptronic is done corectly through.

EDIT: I think, that te reason it's done like that, sort of reverse, is becasue of peoples mind thinking that up should be forward, and down should be backward... get it? It used to feel more natural to me too, now it sucks, lol.

Quote from garph :The rallycross/autocross are racing against others on track at the same time. Trial is about racing the clock and possible time penalties, more like single player hotlapping and not really a multiplayer online racing sim.

I take it, you don't realy have much desire for ACTUAL rally implemented then, do ya?

Quote from Markz :"Ice racing" as most of you like to call it (lol same here) will be hard in the beginning, sure. That's what we all said about rally racing and road racing, but eventually you grow into it and get used to it. How do you think some pro racers got to where they are today? They all said it was hard at first... Now look where they are :P.

+1, I'd love for rally racing to have a brother

I'd love for there to actualy BE rally racing in LFS, you know, whith point-to-point courses, checkpoints, rally cars, etc. and not this half-assed, overrated rallycross bullsh*t.

EDIT: through, buisy as you guys (devs) are, I DO give my apreciaton to you for even trying to do rally stuff in the first place, and not just putting it off as not done enough, like you did with the weather, time-of day, etc. Again, thanks for what we DO have.

Quote from Jamexing :Ice racing in LFS, let's see:

Good news: LFS's physics engine already has the capability to simulate ice very well, just that it was used for development and never actually implemented in the sold program.

On the other hand, the only existing car that has a chance in this form of racing is the RB4. Even with 4wd, your grip on ice will not magically increase, so we'll need studded tires for this to work.

True, ice racing involves lots of sideways action, but that has absolutely NOTHING to do with the tire burning showdrifting kids indulge in these these days. They go sideways only because the it is the optimal way to negotiate curves on snow with the minimum use of time. It's the same with snow in WRC stages too, though not to such an extreme extent.

So WHY is sideways the most efficient way in snow? It's all to go with the grip circle of studded tires on ice. It's all because the longitudinal grip (traction) far exceeds lateral grip, so all that longitudinal grip is better off used by pointing a car at a greater angle than the actual line of travel to use that excess traction into centripetal force, using traction to force the car towards the center of a circle.

Difference between ice racing and showdrifting:

Ice racing: Juts using the most efficient means necessary to get the job done.

Showdrifting: Sideways for the sake of sideways.

This is why I hate formula D, and traction control. If it wasn't for TC, we might just have WAY more racing with drifting used to go faster around a corner, and not showing off. IE: remember the good ol days of the AC cobra at lemans? Quote: Doing a 4 wheel drift was the only fast way of putting those cars through a corner fast, and coming out within the powerband.

Well, I asked, and my dad said that, after 4 years of squeezing every last bit of preformance out of my POS computer, an update couldn't hurt, especialy since I've managed to fix this pile of crap after some catastrophic meltdowns, and saved us a bunch of money for repair technicians. After I come back from Russland, I'm hopefully going to be racintg in the 32 car fields with NO LAG!:jawdrop: :headbang: :wow: :laola: Oh, and over 30FPS as well! hahaha. Anyway, good luck with everything guys, I'm gonig to see if I can take my DFP with me to Russia. if so, maybe I'll be seeing you sooner that you think!

Quote from Ian.H :Pointlessly defending something that requires no talent?

I'll leave you with this... try drifting an F1 car midcorner in order to pass someone like Senna before his... (well, you know.) THEN say it takes no ****ing skill. In the video I saw with this, there was even a comment about how it's easier to do a barrel roll in a 747 Boeing, than to drift an F1 like he just did.

there is an potion called smooth steering in misc options.

Set this to 70, and turn off Force feedback.
