Thanks again The new setup copy feature is great! Never actually thought about it but it's neat to have and spares you a lot of extra work.

Then again, I have to report that LFS still doesn't regain focus when it's already running (fullscreen) and I double click a replay from my spr folder. In windowed mode it seems to work, just not in fullscreen (which I always use). The replay just starts in the background in the minimized window then.

One more general issue: when you're in the replays screen and try to open a replay via double click in the Windows Explorer, LFS refuses to open it and shows a message box saying: "LFS must be waiting in entry screen"

Thanks for this patch File associations is something I've been waiting for, in fact it was very needed
However, I've noticed two small problems already:

- When LFS is already running but minimized and you double click a new replay in the Windows Explorer, LFS doesn't regain focus
- In the end of the replay right after the laptime showed up and the replay was about to finish, I hit "End Race" and ended up in a blank main menu screen. No buttons, no fonts, just the background image. LFS seemd to go into idle mode then, I couldn't bring the menu back up. I tried open another replay by double clicking but a message box showed up saying that LFS was waiting for the entry screen or something the like...
I managed to reproduce it twice, but I'm not exactly sure how I did it. It might have to do with trying to end the replay when it is just about to finish.

FYI: I have disabled the intro and exit screen (which is very nice in terms of speedup), maybe it has something to do with it?

Quote from MrSkill :hehe, the german banner was funny (but I think only understandable for germans): "Sweden, Geh-heim Favorit".

Had to laugh about this.

yeah, laughed about this too.

I think you can explain it, even though the "fun in the pun" only works for those who understand German.

"Geh-Heim Favorit" = "go-home favourite"
in allusion to the very similar sounding:
"Geheim-Favorit" = "secret favourite"

Quote from tristancliffe :I thought this thread was wishing Looney a happy birthday, with plenty of raving on the sides (he does strike me as a raver). But it turns out it isn't. So I'll wish Looney a happy 13th June, and say that I agree LFS is teh bestest.

Yeah, great. Just when I had finished writing my post and clicked "Preview post", the server was suddenly unavailable and my post got lost in the process. A reload didn't help but showed me an error message "invalid thread specified" instead.

Anyway, I was gonna roll on the floor and laugh my ass off since I for one am with Tristan on this: I was thinking exactly the same thing when I read the thread title. After I'd read the post itself I was wondering if I was the only one who had been fooled so horribly by the title. Turns out I was not
But since my post got lost somewhere in the world wide nirvana, the "ROFLMAO" has gone with it. Guess I should feel lucky because my ass remains attached to the rest of my body then...

Believe it or not, I've always been playing LFS without FF. I could hardly imagine turning FF on because you'd have to work harder to turn the wheel and so your reaction time increases.
Personally, I really don't need the feedback through the wheel as I get most of my feeling for the car from the sound. Without sound, I could hardly drive at all (tried it before). I think the implementation of sound in LFS is quite generous in terms of feedback because the tire scrubbing sound gives you a very clear indication of when you're just about to exceed the limit of cohesion.
Finer wing adjustments

Hello

I'd like to suggest an improvement for something that's been haunting me for a longer time now: the wing settings!
Hopefully this hasn't been suggested before, but I couldn't find anything doing a quick search.
I find that changing the wing angle in 1° steps is often a night or day difference and lets you decide between horrible understeer or oversteer in fast corners. And since the effects of a 1° change for front/rear don't seem to be totally linear, changing the overall downforce necessarily leads to a change in the car's balance.
Sometimes you feel you just need a tad more downforce at the rear or the front but you can't set it because you'd screw the whole balance of the car. Mostly the tires, the suspension and everything else depend on these settings. Changing the downforce settings requires a rework of the rest of the setup.

So would it be asking too much to be able to adjust the wings in at least 0.5° or even 0.25° steps? I think they do it IRL, I've once seen it happen in the F1, when the team told their driver via team radio they had given him 0.25° more front wing during a pit stop.

That WR will probably be beaten soon. With a slightly better set and a little more luck, 1:09 should be possible

However, I will most likely never race the demo again...

Hell yes! Just imagine: LFS (demo) bundled with every new Logitech wheel... Now that would be something.
This seems like a case for Dr. Vykos

I find it a little annoying recently to see some of the bigger companies turning to rFactor. I think this is the proof that marketing really pays off after all, even though most of us agree that there are better products out there...

But maybe we as a community have something up our sleeves to turn Logitech away from "the dark side"?

Quote from TiJay :Those 650s look very appealing.

I'd recommend the 650s hands down to anyone, however this model is not primarily meant for gamers but for "music lovers" (hence the term audiophile)...

Quote from TiJay :Right now I want to save up for the Bose QuietComfort 2 though.

Noooooooooo, please don't! Bose headphones are some of the most overpriced phones for their actual sound value...
I promise that almost any model from a decent headphone manufacturer (even the lower priced Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic, AKG, AudioTechnica or SOME of Sony models) will outperform those Boses any time...

If you'd like some help as to which headphone might fit your taste best for a given price, I'd be happy to help you out with some of my humble expertise
Supposedly the best headphone forum in the whole web can be found here: www.head-fi.org
There's also many geeks and professionals around there... while some of them have spent tens of thousands of dollars on their "hobby", there are also a few humans with a little common sense left...

Yeah, you can call me an audiophile illepall I'm really in love with those phones for almost any type of music.
But I also use them for LFS as I basically use them for anything I do on my computer. Headphones don't disturb parents and/or neighbours and make me happy at the same time

I strongly suggest getting headphones because it gives you all the detail and information at any volume that's convenient to you. It's not that you have to get the most expensive headphones around... simple 5€ earbuds will do if you just use them for racing once in a while.

Quote from Honey :i guess you never heard about "arp poisoning" (arp IS dangerous), lfs has no reason at all to send arp packets even for normal online activity, so to me (from the info you gave) sounds like a virus trying to reprogram routes into your lan to be "the man in the middle" ...but this is also unlikely to me, are you sure you cannot give more infos?
what firewall do you have? do you listen audio cd on pc (remember sony rootkit)?

Actually, I'm a networking n00b but your advice is much appreciated. I've heard of ARP before and while I know what it does, I wasn't really aware that it might be abused in this fashion.
I'm using the Sygate Personal Firewall 5.6 and I haven't listened to Sony Audio CDs on my PC. I know about their dirty business with the rootkit which is why I won't buy any of that crap.

I've just noticed that this ARP requesting also happens with other applications, so I think we can rule out that this is an LFS problem. Whether it's a glitch in a firewall or really some mean old trojan horse, I'm not sure. At least there's no strange processes running or suspicious connections open on my PC. And as I said I'm usually very careful with what I install... I'll post my findings if there's anything interesting I discover

Quote from wien :Well, from your own post:Sounds very much like a virus to me. Can't see any other reason for LFS.exe changing. Unless it's simply the firewall reacting to a patch or something...

Quote from biggie from initial posting :I've noticed several times when installing a new patch that my software firewall kicks in...

@aDRENOcHROME: (love it when you have to copy&paste people's usernames to address them :P) Thanks for your insights into networking. Anyway, for some reason I completely overlooked the line that said "ARP"... of course this isn't at all dangerous. I was aware that the target IP was my router so actually no harm could have been done.

Furthermore I agree with Scawen. I'm actually happy to have a personal firewall to allow me to control my outbound network traffic at least a little bit. To me, the firewall already does a fine job by not allowing most of the "standard applications" to access directly. I like to be in control, or at least have the illusion of being in control
About trojans and viruses... well, I don't really don't know their advanced techniques. But as I said, my software firewall has an application hijacking detection. So when another programm tries to use the internet explorer to do something very very mean, it will alert me about this.
It also features a "DLL authentication" which keeps applications from running DLLs in the context of other trusted applications.
Again, I cannot say how secure this is in the end but it's the best free personal firewall available. I'm glad to have it. And I haven't had any viruses or trojans in years...
It's always good to keep an open eye, not install software blindly, keep peering the task manager from time to time (and from time to time use tools that also show hidden processes...) and of course keep your system up-to-date patch wise. It worked for me in the last few years. No problems whatsoever.

Quote from GC :How to check these packets ? (any manual for noobs like me ?! )

http://www.blitzbox-download.com/spf.exe

There's a full packet logging mechanism and you can define a maximum filesize for the log. As you can imagine, this log would grow big quite fast
It might be more useful to disable (or only temporarily activate) this because the firewall will automatically show you the latest packet from access attempts of unknown applications anyway. I'm sure that packet logging might drain some resources on your system if enabled permanently.

Quote from detail :Biggie, Do you have the d3d8.dll in your LFS dir? I've renamed it and the packets dissapeared. Checked this twice. d3d8.dll (GhostCar mod) was the cause for me.

Found it because noticed that GhostCar has the same port 28888 to which mysterious packets were sent.

Nope, I don't use the GhostMod :/ there's not a single dll in my LFS folder.

@Scawen: thanks for your reply. I've read through your posting in the other thread and I really appreciate your approach on this matter. This is all part of what makes LFS so great.

However, I couldn't imagine how a virus would affect LFS. Actually my firewall has an application hijacking detection, so if for example a virus would attempt to "remote-control" another application to mask itself, the firewall would detect it. I don't know how secure this feature is, but I highly doubt it might be a virus
Does the binary dump of the packet tell you anything?

I'm gonna do another virus scan and check for processes not showing up in the task manager. You never know :/

Quote from detail :Well, I've found a line in cfg.txt:
OutSim Mode 0

OutSim and OutGauge are both 0 for me too.
LFS sending mysterious data packets

Hello,

I've noticed several times when installing a new patch that my software firewall kicks in randomly because the LFS executable has changed and it queries me whether to allow the application access to the network or not. However, the time and place of LFS's attempt to send data is a little mysterious.
I was just driving some offline laps when I received the following information from my firewall:

The executable has changed since the last time you used: D:\Spiele\LFS\LFS.exe
File Version :
File Description : D:\Spiele\LFS\LFS.exe
File Path : D:\Spiele\LFS\LFS.exe
Process ID : 0xC2C (Heximal) 3116 (Decimal)
Connection origin : local initiated
Protocol : Raw Ethernet
Local Address : 0.0.0.0
Local Port : 0
Remote Name :
Remote Address : 0.0.0.0
Remote Port : 0
Ethernet packet details:
Ethernet II (Packet Length: 56)
Destination: ff-ff-ff-ff-ff-ff
Source: 00-50-70-92-14-2b
Type: ARP (0x0806)
Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)
Hardware type: Ethernet (0x0001)
Protocol type: IP (0x0800)
Hardware size: 6
Protocol size: 4
Opcode: Request
Sender hardware address: 00-50-70-92-14-2b
Sender IP address: 192.168.4.100
Target hardware address: 00-00-00-00-00-00
Target IP address: 192.168.4.254
Binary dump of the packet:
0000: FF FF FF FF FF FF 00 50 : 70 92 14 2B 08 06 00 01 | .......Pp..+....
0010: 08 00 06 04 00 01 00 50 : 70 92 14 2B C0 A8 04 64 | .......Pp..+...d

0030: 42 4C 1F 7A 00 00 2A 05 : | BL.z..*.

What exactly is LFS trying to achieve? The target IP address is the local address of my router... so is that some kind of network broadcast? Why does it happen randomly during offline play? :/

Maybe Scawen could shed some light on this?

Hey, this is my wheel
I can wholeheartedly recommend it because it's very sturdy and durable. And unlike some of the Momos, I haven't had problems with the pedals going crazy after a while. In fact, I've used my first FF GP for almost 2 years before somehow the wheel itself became a little insensitive and jerky around the center. Got a new wheel&pedals then. The pedals on the new wheel had some problems after a year of intensive use, so I swapped the new pedals with my old pedals. To date, I'm still using the old pedals and the new wheel... they're still working perfectly.

It's a very precise and reliable wheel. The build quality visually is not the best, but it's still very sturdy and doesn't break easily.
I cannot comment on the Force Feedback because I've turned it off.
For the money, there's hardly anything that beats it! If you're looking for a cheap way to enter the joy of LFS, this is your way to go. If you happen to have more money, you might be better off getting a Momo or DFP.
However, I cannot say I feel the need for a better wheel than the FF GP, so you might just be fine with it
