Some ideas about simple improvements
Abone

Hello everyone. I've been thinking about some improvements that could be made about LFS, I've seen a few similar requests but my idea is something more simple. here goes.

1- new interior for FZ/RB/FXO CARS
2- all LFS rims available for all cars, with specific dds file per rims.
3- option for put different color on rear and front wheels
4- licenseplates.dds (texture) available for all cars
5- maximum lock 90º for all cars
6- total mass distribution (with some restriction if car is FR, FWD,RR etc..) or weight reduction
7- independent bump and rebound for all cars
8- LSD - locking (power / coast) for all cars
9- adding grey/green color for concrete objects and all colors available for all objects
10- new curves(rumble strips) for blackwood
11- remove the conical smoke effect , put smoke effect with one size and also take effect if car make drifting. at the moment if i have hot tyres, car make smoke without any drifting, this idea maybe reduced lag smoke also.

I wait the opinion of the developers on this idea.

dds name?

I would just like to pitch in this idea. (if you where to go over to .dds)

Wich would be to map the windows on to the cars skin aswell (or as an extra texture "XRT_W_skinName", and that window texture would load in with the matching skin name "XRT_skinName") so windows stickers would be possible.
If you where to add windows to and extra skin maybe alpha grayscale could be mapped to shine for the cars, to get flat or chrome effect on the skins.

:Extra:
Burn me on a witch stand, but i did a mod with that platform before you updated the alpha textures (map the windows to the carskin). Wich worked well exept it was either 0% or 100% as in black and white, no grayscale. So the lines got verry choppy.
Now with the new alpha it can't load the skin texture properly so the windows get completly black on track.
(I would provide screenshots but thats against the rules.)

Thanks for the explanation, but I did know how png works and differs from jpg Wink
Though I did not know that LFS (or I guess directx) will load png just fine if you give it the jpg extension.

We'll see about all this when Scawen makes some time to do the skin download updates.
I like the idea of converting skins to dds on the server and gzipping them. The filesize is about the same as jpg then (even for 2048) but without lossy compression. It also has the added bonus that the LFS client doesn't have to do any conversions, leading to faster skin downloading / processing.

Looks much better with reflections. Wink

Also have you thought about using a different tyre.dds? Unfortunately I can't seem to find the one I'm using. Also not sure if the tread and tyre walls are saved in seperate files.

Edit: I think they were from Lynce's Revolution Pack, these download links work.

http://files.team-fortitude.net/the_revolution_pack/

If you download them from there there's a few options (brand new, dirty, used/worn) and the .rar files also include the originals. Not perfect but definitely better to look at than what you have now. :P

Quote from Gutholz :How would uploaded 2048 be converted to 1024?
I sometimes wonder if 512 look blury only because of lower resolution. It seems a bit like compression artifacts too. (Not so noticable on Whiskey's gif, in general)

Degats' suggestion to store everything as gzipped dds actually would work very well. Even for 2048 skins. So I'm discussing this with Scawen to see what we can do. Then there wouldn't be any lossy compression at all and you could upload skins even as png for example.

Quote from nacim :Thanks Victor, so much time I was waiting for it ! Smile

Bug report, with high-res skin uploaded, skin preview in cars section is bugged, see screenshot :

Ah, that's because the thumbnails are now stored with double dimensions. Will fix tonight.

Quote from Zaabis :...but we need to get rid of 512, they look terrible.

TBH, the biggest problem with the 512 skins is the horrible jpeg compression, which is more noticeable at a lower resolution.

The 512 skins either need a higher base jpeg quality or (the better option IMO) store them on LFSW and download as a gzip'd dds.
Skin upload now possible in 2048px
Victor

Being able to upload and download skins with bigger dimensions has been a recurring topic for a while. We have now begun preparation for this and have made it possible to upload car skins with a maximum dimension of 2048 * 2048 pixels and 1024 * 1024 pixels for helmet skins. So, double the previous maximum size.

At the same time I have renewed the skins upload page. It is now located on this website at www.lfs.net/account/skins . The icon on lfsworld now opens this page as well.

Though skin downloads inside LFS will remain the same for while still, we thought it'd be good to enable people to upload skins with bigger dimensions now, so that when LFS supports it, there will already be skins available for download.

As said, we have doubled the maximum dimension, but that does not mean you have to actually use it. You can still upload skins at 1024px as well. So the higher dimensions are optional.

One thing we have been considering is allowing the upload of even bigger dimensions.
We could allow people to upload 4096px skins although these would not become available in LFS, but they would then already be available in case LFS ever would.

So we'd like to ask you what you think : do you think it should be possible to upload 4096px skins as well (even though LFS will not support downloading them any time soon), or would you be opposed to that, as it will be overkill, at least for a while to come? Because even if you have a 4K monitor, 4096px skins would still be twice as high at your monitor's resolution. The increased quality would only be visible on close close-ups. For racing itself it would be pointless, even on a 4K monitor.
Filesizes increase as well - you'd have to download more, and as JPG skin files will be converted to DDS format, it would take around 7MB per skin, storage wise.
Finally, a bigger skin doesn't necessarily make a better skin.

If you have an opinion on this, vote in the poll and / or leave your opinion behind.

If you experience any trouble with the new skins page, please let me know as well.

Is there any chance to get the Westhill logo visible around the track? The one found in WSTinfo.dds is way too small to use for any graphical purposes, couldn't find any other dds file (beside bin, which is also too small) with this logo.

Will be adding a ton of custom goodies here over time, created for all to enjoy in the LFS Community! Big grin

To use, save the dds files into C:\LFS\DATA\DDS just change the filename to the following for each ar as desired:
FBM = "FBM_rims.dds"
XRG = "testalloy4.dds"
XRT = "XRGT_Alloy2.dds"
XRR = "XRR_Alloy1.dds"

Quote from Pablo Donoso :Now if only I could figure out which DDS files are for the rims to make them look as good as the XRR's does. Big grin

You can only "skin" rims of all 3 XR cars and FBM,the downside - as all dds modifications, they are just client side.

Quote from luki97 :

This actually never helps and when im setting track textures it only gains 1 maybe 2 fps so its actually useless because there is no real gain in fps and its only looking worse when you set it on low. And i actually have lower fps in compressed textures so im using full textures because there is more fps and looking better. Tryied even default or alternative shadows and fps was same on both (read: fps was low). I did it on a paused game as it should be ofc.

Ok so imagine there is a large environment with all the surface areas covered with tons of files, each one being 2mb-5mb's in size. As you go from section to section in the environment, the textures behind you are taken away as the ones coming up are added. As more textures appear, it takes time for the cpu/gpu to process it. This takes probably a few milliseconds for your computer to load and isn't noticeable... that is until it has to be done with hundreds of files for all the cars & track textures, 60-100 times per second, and while keeping track of where the other cars are at any given time.

FPS can be affected by a number of things but the biggest is definitely how well a computer is able to process the environment and changes within it. Not everyone has a good computer though and for them, it does certainly help when there are less objects and textures for the gpu / cpu to process. My tips are for those which like myself don't have gaming rigs... mine for example is just an old workstation for numbercrunching which I modified a little bit. Works perfectly fine for me. Wink

Now if only I could figure out which DDS files are for the rims to make them look as good as the XRR's does. Big grin

Just as good car stereos sound terrible when connected with 18-22 gauge wire... good computer hardware can still perform like DOS games when the hardware isn't running at full potential.

Here's an example: imagine trying to drink a Dr Pepper with a 2 meter long straw... not very good...

When I got a GPU not too long ago, yes the graphics improved but it was still the same FPS, just a lot bigger graphics with more detail. What did improve the speed is when I stopped using the VGA cable and bought a DVI cable instead. I noticed a difference right away even as I started my computer.

If you have trouble with FPS, try the following:

in desktop properties
- lower screen resolution but use highest refresh rate it allows
- set memory control to allocate memory to programs, not background cache

in task manager
- make LFS.exe high priority process
- end unused processes like itunes or startup items
- close web browsers especially if you use google chrome

in the game
- set display functions to use low res for all textures
- reduce size of Westhill dds files from 2048x2048 to 512x512

note: feel free to add or change the list if it helps.

Or you can re download LFS into a different directory, don't use it but copy across any DDS files from this that you need to restore.

This will give you good copies that you can always restore from if needed.

See Deko's answer regarding illegal activity though.......
(I think it was the same answer but I've just worded it differently Smile)

You may use the setup exe for the game and extract the dds folders to your installation folder. It functions as a self-extracting archive.

Beware though, that if you are modifying the car models themselves (ie the VOB files) that cannot be discussed on this forum. If you are just changing the texture files (the DDS files) then that is legal.
