incredibly strong on the single seaters, heres how to reproduce it:

Get in a car
Damage the BODYWORK of the car.
Change drivers (not the name, create a new driver and change to it)

Everytime you change the driver, the damage you did on the bodywork gets worse. And the more damage there was in the beggining, the more radical the change is gonna be!

the _ONLY_ thing you can change on your car to really improve it is to change the original parts with better-built ones, or ones that will give better performance. But its not a "bolt on and pray" process.
For starters, the cars that can get "upgraded" are the CHEAP CARS.
You arent going to do nothing good by "upgrading" your rx7, or your series5 BMW, or your S2000.
Those cars are expensive enough that the big-headed engineers already did the best they could (which means problably the best that CAN be done) to find a good balance between performance and reliability.
On the other end of the scale, the cheaper cars have a third parameter - low cost. This is why the 1.1liter, 60hp ~11000€ cars have disk brakes in front and drum brakes in the back - the drum brakes are MUCH worse, BUT they are a LOT cheaper, and last longer, too. Plus, since htey are worse, they give the very safe front brake bias a road car needs.

For THOSE cars (the fiestas, saxos, 106's, Aygo's...) a "Upgrade" is possible. IF DONE RIGHT.
You dont just slap on ventilated disk in the front and back and pray.. you FIRST find out what the brake bias is, THEN get rid of the drum brakes at the rear, put in good brakes, then go calibrate your new brakes to have the same brake bias (maybe a little less to the front - emphasis on the LITTLE), then check if the wheel's cambers is still right, see if the new brakes weight more or less then the ones before and see if you have to adjust the rear spring due to the weight change, then if the hydro can support the increased brake force that needs to be applied to the rear brakes, then go out and test if the tires can stand the bigger brake force without locking up... etc etc etc.

Wanna change the exaust system for better performance? thats a LOAD of trouble - you'd better really REALLY know what you are doing.

About the only things you can put that are just bolt on and presto are better air filters, and little things like that.
Even something as simple as fitting wider tires can give a lot of grief. Lowers the mileage (i.e. increased fuel consumption), can make the tires rub the wheel wells.. etc etc etc.
Just go and find some car setup (for a road car) in LFS, and "rice it" - lower susp, increase springs, fiddle with the dampers a bit (or like some shops do, just lower the ride height and away you go). You'd be surprised with the (awfull) results.

Modding cars is 99% of the time, simply put... STUPID.

Who would you rather trust? the Giant headed, glowing veined wizard engineers the actually designed the car from scratch, or the pot-belly beer grubbing mechanic from the corner that with a lot of luck managed to do the 1st year of university?
One thinks like "hmm if ve increze zee rear ride height by 0.05 centimeterz, ze car will have aprroximatly 0,867371 newtons of exztra downforze".
The other thinks like "if I remove this bit HERE and put this new part there, car will go faster! wee!"

A couple of cases I got first-hand contact with:

1) One of the most usual mods around here, is fitting wide tires on the front of Smart City cars. They have fat rear tires and thin front tires cause they dont have power steering, and its a short wheelbase light rearwheeldrive car. thin tires at front = understeer which balances the oversteer from the RWD. Still, in the rain, smarts are pretty tailhappy. (I know, I drive one )
This guy, from a chip-tuning shop down the street from me, chipped his smart, and put fat front tires in it. Car was pretty fast, and was even more lively than usual smarts. Couple weeks ago (start of june, IIRC), he came to the shop in his wife's Espace. Asked him what happened to the smart. Answer:
"I was driving fast, having fun, then when I had to take a left turn, the rear suddenly started sliding and spun me around. I ended up in the opposite lane, facing sideways and got hit by a another car."
Car was totalled, and to add insult to injury, since the police's report of the accident said that "illegal modifications to the car" were partly responsible for the accident, the insurance company billed HIM for the 1'500€ of damages to the other car.
Obviously, fat front tires = much more oversteer, and he spun a slow-going city car with THAT smart move.

2)Guy from school bought an old 5-series BMW (dont quite know which). Sent it directly to "rice school", where he lowered the car to "look cooler".
about half a year later, he said he suddenly lost control of the car in the highway when he went over some kind of bump - car spun around and he ended up in the ditch. First thing he did after? changed the susp back to the original, is a much happier man.
Obviously, stiffer suspension, lower car = less compliance over bumps. Worse yet, if you change the roll stiffens ration from front and rear and/or the spring stiffness ration from font and rear the car will feel different. Change it too much... and you can (and problably will) crash.

And I live about 3kms from the Portuguese track of Estoril.
Every trackday is funny watching some kinds of cars crashing:
Big powered RWD cars driven by men in their mid-life crisis. (H2000, some porches, saw one mx5 having a really stupid spin and crash while braking), and... ricer cars.
Those crash with a regularity that has me betting on how many laps they gonna do before they end up in the wall/gravel.
Funniest so far was some dude with a Saxo Cup, all riced, lowered, about a billion speakers inside, supah paintjob, uber rims, super low profile tires... then flipping it LFS-style in T1 by clipping the inside kerb.. I loled the entire afternoon on that one

Ima just gonna say one thing - If senna hadn died, the seasons from there on would be nothing short of spectacular. We'd have 2 über drivers that just wouldnt give one inch on the track... constantly battling it out.
Would have made the senna/prost thing seem like a calm afternoon tea.
Can you imagine schumi trying to slipstream past senna? or the opposite?
I'd garantee we'd see them fistfighting after some crash...

Oh the possibilites... We lost a great driver, a great man, and a great sportsman in senna.

that tire problem (grip falls to nothing whenever you muck it up) was what turned me off GTR2 and prevented me from buying rFactor - since I read it was using the same engine for the tyres.
In rF, whenever I enter a corner too fast (which is about 99% of the time ) I simply slide off the track, helicopter fashion. The most retarded thing is that this happens at ALL SPEEDS. Come into magny cours hairpin a tad too fast, no throttle applied, turn the wheel too much, and presto - the car fisically "bounces" to the left as the front tires just let go of the tarmac, and I simply go plowing straight ahead into the wall. No chance to brake at all... not even on the tarmac.
I saw a guy doing the exact same thing on a f430, (in RL) and he also slid forwards like I did, understeering like mad on the hairpin. Thing is, the car was nearly stopped at the edge of the track, inside the white line. He let go of the brakes, and just turned the car around back onto the line...

What got me to buy LFS on the spot (I had demo about 2 days before I decided to buy) was when braking waaay too late for a corner, the car slid sideways... and kept sliding, but stable. I didnt get off the track, but lost damn near all my speed. Meaning, I was not in control, but the tires were still GRIPPING and slowing me down. Kinda like what has happened to me several times in RL. (loose the rear, instintivly hit the brakes, make the situation worse, and go into a looooooooooooooooong slide sideways while you look to your side, where you were coming, looking straight on into the white-shocked faces of drivers behind you.... but the car stops just shy of the railing).
On rF, when you loose traction it works *exactly* like Nelsinho Piquet's spin in montreal race: begin spin, then suddenly the car twirls around and BAM into the wall. Only diff was that nelsinho hit the kerb, which was why he lost all grip. The moment he landed, he could brake again and didnt touch the wall.

piss poor game from portugal, specially in the second part. Great game from the swisss though. Very deserved win.

the only players at least TRYING were pepe (the bald guy that had rocketpacks in his boots), and joao moutinho , he came and didnt stop running till the fat lady sang. Complete lack of heart from all others... wheres the insane passion we saw during euro 2004? and WC2006?

The business model apart (ill get into that later), I've read the whole site from one end to the other.

If this was a normal-payed game, I would STILL give it a pass, waiting for reviews to come to check the physics.
What MOST developers forget is that a racing simulator game is 99.99% physics and 00.01% candy.
You could have a pretty bland-looking game with few tracks and few cars, and if the physics was spot on, it would sell.
OR a game with no real cars, no real tracks, spot-on physics and it would sell (RIGHT?)
EVERYTHING I read there seemed like hyper-blow PR talk.
I saw nearly zero talk about physics, damage-modeling, suspension simulation, etc.
The ONLY physics thing on the site is a claim of a "of a new, proprietary tire model. It replicates tire forces over a wide range of speeds and loads"

However, that whole text (Technology -> Car Tech) reads basically as follows:
"A critical difference between game-level simulations and the hyper-accuracy achieved by iRacing.com is the sophistication of our physics engine." [followed by a definition of physics engine] and much PR speak about importing CAD designs from real cars, getting exact laser-measured sizes of parts, etc.

Well have to wait and see if its a "OMG this is arcade crappola" or a "sell your wife and kids to get this!".
More cars / less cars?

Sorry for the poll spam, but this is a similar issue, but different issue...
Now the CARS.

Again, many people clamor for new cars, and again I tend to disagree - many combos, nearly noone has driven all the combos... etc.
Whenever someone suggest Car A or Car B, I shudder, thinking "great Idea.. ANOTHER car to master and suck at!".

Well... that got me thinking (always a rare and dangerous event), and I came up with this:
More cars, but in the SAME CLASSES.
For example - for the roadcars (XFG/XRG) we could add a mid-engine, RWD car (as we could in all classes - LFS has exactly zero mid-engined cars - apart from single-seaters, ofc). THAT alone is 5 more cars (TBO, LRF, GTR, BabyGTR, FZ5-LX6 class).

UF1000 could get a new companion on a XFG with even less power (say 60hp - the usual 1.1liter roadcar), etc.
Then other cars could be added to make everyone happy - newer looking cars, convertibles (like a MX-5/S2000 lookalike), hothatches (some Focus/Golf GTI lookalike for TBO), etc.
Since they would be in the same class (roughly same power-to-weight, tire size, torque, etc...) they would be relatively equal in laptimes, but some would be better for some tracks - like we got in TBO atm. HOWEVER, with more cars per class, it would be much harder to say "Car X is TEH CAR for Class Y" as we say of FXO and TBO.

This even fixes the car selection menu - it would be a matter of navigating to your car "class" then choosing the model to drive.

Again, a cryptic poll to ensure the post is read.
Again, sorry for the "spamm-ish" posts.
We need more tracks AND less tracks?

Heres the deal.
Some say we need more tracks, more content, more cars.
I *usually* disagree. There are already a gazillion combos to drive and 90% of us havent driven then all (not even half the combos, problably).
Thing is... the game is STILL getting repetitive. Like becky rose said, "Im tired of turning THAT same corner". I've done some corners literally thousands of times, and due to it being a car, its usually at very similar speeds.
We _NEED_ more tracks.
BUT lfs already feels like it has too many tracks.

So heres my analysis of the problem. LFS doenst have too many tracks. What it has is too many SIMILAR tracks.
The solution?
New tracks, LESS combos. Like Westhill. one track, one layout. At most 3 layouts. (Grand prix, short run (say for uf100s and mrt5s), and rallyX)
NOT the aston/fern bay insanity (or well end up with say NC27R NewCity 27 reversed).

Plus, this way we can have tracks that are not an endless sucession of chicanes (fernBay anyone). and more flowing, assymetrical tracks like KY2.

The poll is cryptic on purpose, to force voters to read the post and understand it. Come to think of it, Ill make a similar thread for the cars, and I get the feeling this is the way content should go.

no, the FBM's first gear in lots of setups is way too high, resulting in a lot of stress on the clutch during starts.
In some tracks, I put 1st gear very low (to speed in 1st: 50kph), then second where 1st used to be, then the rest equally spaced. Result is I drive from 2nd to 5th, and its just fine (again, in SOME tracks).

On other tracks, dont do full-throttle restarts - and that includes pitting.

most probably this will get implemented partially: using the cloth to cover SOME parts, like a moveable rear wing/ front radiator / headlights/ etc.
Basically build the car as usual, then put the cloth in the parts where you need to have it move. or the parts that usually have seams and cause aerodynamic drag (like the bonnet/frontbumper area).

this way you can get the best of both - and since its a smaller area, if it gets knifed, replacing is problably much cheaper.

And in fast sports cars they can make the car change shape according to speed.

I use gloves sometimes, but still getting used to em.
They are very good for gripping a g25 (bike gloves, that is), and they protect my thumbs from the stiches on the inside of the wheel, where the thumbrests are. I grip pretty hard there, up to the point of skinning my right thumb till it bled during last weeks OWRL.

Thing is, I cant type with the gloves on...

"Ok so lets just change all Players.Count to MCI.NumC"
Well MCI.NumC at max can be 8. So if you have 9 players, that last player wont be updated.

Problem is, when you have 9 players, you will get TWO MCI packets.
One with players 1-8, and one with player #9.
So changing it to MCI.NumC will work (and does, my app is using it).

read this: (from mcgas's first post and on)
http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=42147

To make it short, the trick is to request an mci packet from insim, and nothing else.
THEN in the method that will parse the mci packet, just let him update the car's stats - the 8 that will be in the mci packet, and tag them via carID.
On the surface seems like it wont work, only will update the first 8, but you'd be wrong:

requestMCIPacket();
--> insim sends back one MCI packet, with players 1-8.
--> MCI packet is received, appropriate method is fired up.
mciPacketHandler iterates through all 8 players, updates them in the clsPlayer. (the other n players are still not updated).
-->insim sends ANOTHER MCI packet, still responding to your original request, this time with players 9-17.
-->MCI packet is received, appropriate method is fired up.
mciPacketHandler iterates through all 8 players, updates them in the clsPlayer. (the other n players are still not updated, but players 1-17 are done).

And so forth till insim stops sending packets cause it reached the bottom of the conn list.

The whole code for updating the list is 2 lines long (4 if you count the curlybraces lines, or 1 if you put it all in one line).

Quote from Jakg :500 Watt is mega overkill - a 300 Watt will work fine.

28" monitors would be a TV, which has a low resolution so it won't actually have that bigger effect on your FPS.

Not quite, JAkg, not quite. Some "300W" arent really 300W - thats just the power of all the lines added. Then somehow it cant keep up with most stuff.
Case in point: I made a computer for my 6 y old, so he could play and not pester me. Hes got a 300W PSU, powering an old CD-RW drive, PIV 28GHZ, a mobo with a soundcard and onboard lan, AND... a ATI Radeon 9800 PRO.
Should be enough to play TF2 (he loves that) LFS,.. any decent game really -at 1024*768.
But it doesnt. Every now and then it just restarts - my guess is the GFX card is killing the PSU.

Either go for an expensive 300W psu, or for a cheaper 500w one. Its kinda like the speaker wattage idiocy... Remember the mega-super-duper 800W speakers that just suck? and the awesome 15w ones that are just brilliant?
