Quote from TexasLTU :@atteiros - I saw a new paintjob of Williams FW31 in lithuanian F-1 site, could you try to make another one skin for BF1?

Photos here

Nice find! I'll see if I can get on this one. I can see a lot of similarities with the sponsor locations from the launch livery with the main color division chnaged. I guess it's similar to how they did it last year (or was that 2 years ago).

That link had something about the 917 Pink Pig I posted here earlier...

"All the departments in Porsche were going to run a 917 in the 1971 race and a late budgetary issue meant that one of the two lost out... the loser got to choose the colour scheme and had their revenge. The livery was designed by one of the teams. Legend has it, sponsor Martini, were not impressed and their logo didn't appear on the car."

My most favourite car in all the world, but I never considered the livery to be particularly notable. I suppose the test would be to see the livery without seeing the car.. if you can name the car/team by seeing only the paintwork design, then it's a win.

Quote from Jakg :F1 rules said max weight of 750 KG (excluding fuel and tires) - the car weighed 751 with a nice white paintjob.

Removed all the paint and the car weighed 750 KG...

but they can easily take 1kg out of the car in other parts. The paint helps reduces drag too.

the livery has a very important functional value - carry sponsors, without sponsors you can't even afford to build the car.

I'd say that iconic liveries also include the later-day BASF liveries - crazy concentric circle mayhem and the striped m-series BMW liveries.

And thinking of the BASF livery's most dizzying rendition on the M1s made me remember Andy Warhols "art car" - which was pretty cool, considering.

Form > Function.

Especially for an F1 car.

What's the function with having no livery?

For me, the epics have to be the Martini and Castrol liveries. They are by far the most distinctive of all liveries, ever. Close followers are the Lancia/Alitalia and the silver Audi with red rings.

Other epics of note are the Renault 2006 and the old Rothmans, the JPS and the latter-day McLaren Vodaphone.

Epic fail must go to Honda's cluttered and incomprehensible "Earth" livery which, though I'm sure it looked great on paper, was shockingly attrocious on the car itself. I still have no idea how it was allowed to make it as far as the pitlane.

Bugger me, I saw Jak posting and I figured it'd have to be an MG livery. I bet when he reads this, he'll kick himself

^ Sometimes the best livery is to have no livery at all.

Group C had some awesome ones.

Like John Lloyd's Porsche (Rest In Peace).

And Fitzpatrick's Porsche.

I concur.

Quote from trebor901 :how is the Gulf racing livery cool? its prestigous but i wouldnt call it a cool looking livery.

Kids these days.. no respect for the classics..

In all honesty, though, from a pure design perspective, the Gulf livery (especially as executed on the 917K) is perfect. It's simple, pleasing to the eye, accentuates the beautiful curves of the vehicle and it stands out without being offensive to the eye.

That being said, I quite like the Flying Lizard Troy Lee Designs Le Mans scheme, too... which is totally the opposite.

Nah... I'll wait until you're done with it. Designer or not it actually looks VERY promising so far.
I have absolutely no idea so far how would I convert that livery, so your WIP is not bad at all.
Keep on going! I'm waiting with interest how it will turn out.
