Asus - They make very good quality laptops. They have been making computer parts for years and years. I would trust an Asus over a Toshiba easily.

Get the 64bit OS, it will be faster then 32bit version. Also you will be able to see all 4gb of your ram (or more if you plan on adding more), you will only be able to see 3-3.5gb with a 32bit OS

As for Linux driver support. I'm sure it depends on the version of linux you are using but they have improved. I'm pretty sure we have ati videos card in our school computers and we use Fedora Linux without an issue. But look into it before as im not sure which would be better.

Quote from dadge :i would opt for double the ram. 4gb just because it's going so cheap these days. see: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/ ... mp;catid=8&subcat=817

Not much point since unless hes going to be using a 64bit version of windows he wont be able to see over 3-3.5gb of ram in the system. Also 4gbs of ram is more then enough for almost anything he plans to run. Better to invest that $$ in another part.

Quote from MijnWraak :Nice choices. Weakest point is PSU since its bundled with the case, and they usually put crap psu's in with cases. Go for a corsair PSU if you can afford it.

Maybe an ATI version of the 9800 (3850?) moar bang for the buck from what I can tell + better AA (debatable) instead of 9800,

I agree, I would buy a good case with no powersupply then buy a good brand name PSU separate. Corsair PSU's are Very good, well built and 5 year warranty.

Quote from eight8acht :I want to buy a second laptop for my GF and i want to be able to play there LFS, too. I'll uy secon LFS S2 licence too so can play against her

Acer Aspire 9300-5005

AMD Turion X2 (2.2 GHz)
nVidia GeForce Go 7300 (128 MB) 1440 x 900
160 GB HD
17" Widescreen Display
1024 MB RAM

pre-installed Vist Business

but i'll kill Vista and put XP on it since with onley 1GB RAM it will suxxxs

What do you think? Will LFS work properly?

Yes it will play LFS, not on any really high Res but it will play it. I have a similar laptop but with a Core 2 Duo & 2gb of Ram. I am also dual booting XP & Vista since Vista came pre installed and it sucks =)

Quote from dropin_biking :Hmm, quite the nice build. I was checking out your site too, seems to be very professional, I like it I might have to swing by, or drop you guys an e-mail when I plan on getting a new system. Being in Huntsville, Toronto isn't much of a drive.
~Bryan~

Hey,

Thanks for the complements, I do like the site myself but keep in mind under the "Systems" section those prices are not up to date so expect it to be a bit cheaper. I'm in the middle of updating prices and putting together some new configs for that section.

Also this is my own side business that I do on the side so I do it out of my home so no store and so on. But if you are interested I can easily build you a system I make them often for other clients.

Anyways just let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks
Bryan

Quote from Kanzai :already bought it, and im stoked. It doesn't push over 1000, but its around 700mhz. This system runs excellent compared to what im used to, i only use 4x AA During game etc, just so the gameplay is slightly smooth and i get 40/50 FPS on a full grid with all GFX turned up in LFS. Im not going to complain, considering i got it for dirt cheap.

Ok so im guessing you already built it correct? Well as long as its good enough for you. But when your ready to upgrade please post and get some info before you buy.

Quote from Kanzai :So after waiting for my computer to turn up which i bought a month ago, it never arrived, got my money back and sold a few things, which gave some more money to spend. So a mate did a list up for me on a system that should run LFS with ease, with full graphics etc but i wanted to see what you fella's reckon aswell!

-Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L S775 P31 FSB1333 DDR2 PCIEx16 SATA2 GbLAN ATX VDBI

-Intel ATX E4500 CORE 2 DUO /2.2GHz/2MB CACHE/800 FSB/LGA775

-DDR2 2048MB(2x1G)PC5300 667Mhz Kingston

-Western Digital 160G SATAII 7200 rpm HDD

-ECS GeForce 8500GT 512MB PCI ExpressVideo

-Samsung 18xDVD -/+R/RW Dual Layer OE Black

What about Case/PSU?

Also I would of NOT bought that video card if you plan on playing other games. That is a Very low end card.

This is why most people usually post the specs of the computer they are going to buy first to get help & then they order it after you get feedback if you need to change anything.

Here are some benchmarks

http://www23.tomshardware.com/ ... ;model2=725&chart=318

Its not the exact card but performance should be similar but either way the 2900 would beat the x1950.

No point in 4gb of ram, thats a waste unless your doing some serious graphics/video editing which you are not going to be doing and even then 2gb is more then enough.

With some $$ you save from the ram, get a better video card.

Also what PSU do you have? If its not good enough you will have to buy a new one to handle everything.

For a brief moment you thought it was, didn't you?

lol Ha, that would suck if that was the case, I find it hard to read the speed if its not digital because its so small since I drive with the view as far back as possible to get a better field of view. This way I can see the mirrors and so on.

Thanks

Move your router something around it (Phones/tvs/monitors etc) could be causing interference. Also changing the channel that its using in the routers config page could help also.

I'm very spuprised nobody mentioned this.

Since its restarting its probably getting a BSOD but it restarts so fast you dont see it. If your running WinXP so this,

Right Click My computer>Properties>Advanced Tab>At The bottom under ''Startup Recovery" Click Settings> & in the middle of the window that just popped up UNCHECK Automatically restart.

So now next time it restarts it will stay at the BSOD and you can read the error and see whats causing the problem.

My guess is that its your video card Drivers. You said you have the latest ones so I would try getting a version before the latest ones that are out to see if that helps.

Keep me us updated,

Ciao
