Quote from tristancliffe :Official? Is there an unofficial release you've been playing, or told about

The best way to spread rumours is to officially deny them.

Quote from Intrepid :If the standard is so high in cars why did Schumi feel the need to compete in the 2001 World Championships against guys like Luizzi, Fore, Ardigo, Cesseti??? Is it not because he has huge respect for the standard of driving?

... or is it because he wanted to learn some new dirty tricks? (Sorry for the sarcasm, but when talking about good clean racing, Schumi is not the first name I think of. Fast, yes, but not clean.)

Quote from Gunn :The CSIRO put little tanks on their backs with tubes to their stomachs (the cow's stomachs, not the CSIRO researcher's) and experimented with farming methane directly from the cattle.

Great! Equip the cow with 4 wheels, a saddle, a seat belt and ignition. That would solve several problems in one go. (Next step: a riced cow.)

Winner? Me? I thought this one was better:
Quote from DarkTimes :(Muffled) "Did I win?!"

It had me and chuckle continually for half an hour. Oh well.

Here is the new picture. Should be well-known among punk fans.

Quote from BlueFlame :I respect everyone. Just not fakers in MY country.

It's not YOUR country. If you are from Anglo-Saxon descent, you'd be a German or Dane. If your ancestors came from Normandy in 1066, you're a frog or a viking. From the bloody continent, anyhow. If you're Celtish: same, only a couple centuries longer.

According to current scientific knowledge we are all Ethiopians. So please show some hospitality to your compatriots.

AI cars go fairly slow when in a pack because they cannot know the skill of the other drivers. A human driver approaching T1 will be more cautious if he knows he is racing a couple of noobs; he'll drive closer to his limit when he is among experienced racers. The AI has no such notion, and will only react to things that happen. This effect gets stronger with the size of the pack: car #2 slows down a bit in response to car #1, then car #3 must slow down some more to avoid bumping into #2. Car #4 brakes even harder, etc.

The same holds for taking curbs (point 6). Human drivers can do this because they know how the car will behave. They anticipate the reaction, and can start countersteering before a wheel hits the curb. AIs can only respond. And on the more powerful cars any response will be too late.

BTW, in some games the AI can "cheat" the physics (e.g. by getting extra grip), to compensate for their inferior driving skills.

Just insert an Ubuntu live CD and boot from that.

(Um, your dad probably disabled booting from CD, and passworded the BIOS.)

Quote from nihil :Maybe someone will correct me on this, but I believe that's Montlhéry, just outside of Paris. It's drastically shortened from its former glory (If still in use at all... anyone know? This footage looks recent....)

You're right, it's the Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry. The movie matches the small track map at the French Wikipedia page (the English page is shorter). If my French is any good, the track lost its certification in 2004, but can still be used for track days and other 'unofficial' racing.

Quote from Electrik Kar :I don't think using the mouse to accel/brake is actually really a good idea, if you're using it for steering as well, now that I think of it... dunno. Will test later.

I tried it, but it was no improvement over normal mouse control. The point is that when you brake at the end of a straight, you must move the mouse downward quickly (from 100% throttle to 100% brake). When doing so, you must not move the mouse sideways, otherwise the car becomes unstable and spins. That's very hard to do. I found it easier to have throttle and brake under a button.

Quote from Chrisuu01 :Its a NVIDIA GeForce FX5200

I have an FX5200 too, and it's pretty slow by today's standards. In LFS your fps count may be fine -- in LFS the processor seems to be the major factor.

M3 Challenge is harder on the graphics card. I set it to 800x600, 16 bits, DirectX 8, and with all graphics options at "low". I got a fame rate that is barely acceptable, in single player mode.

There seems to be a fatal bug in the program (v. 3.0.0, downloaded & installed 15 minutes ago). Many setups can't be loaded. I get an error "This setup is for a vehicle not currently loaded in the program".

This happens for about half of the LFS cars: BF1, FO8, FOX, FXO, RAC, and XFG. The setups for the other cars work.

Quote from thisnameistaken :Yeah I understand that. I don't know. I just know a lot of talented people who are putting a lot of effort into going nowhere and it reminds me of them.

Google "Pierre Scerri" and you'll see he isn't going nowhere. He's being admired across the world for his work. (This page has a nice story about the making of the car.) And here, you can read that
Quote :He was working as a telecommunications engineer during most of the time it took to build this miniature Ferrari in his spare time, but now he is making a living restoring full size vintage race cars while he works on new models.

Sounds like he's making quite a career.
