Hmm. Any ideas as to what physics is being looked at?

Quote from joen :AI completion for instance

I mentioned that in my original post.

If there was NO AI then alpha state, sure. But there is AI in, it's just very very poor. So that arguement doesn't cut it really.

Alpha if a feature is to be added.
Beta to refine what is already in.

From what I know, all features of LFS are present, some just need much more work.

What features are missing to justify the alpha status?

IMO there's no reason why LFS should be tagged as an alpha. Software in beta state has got all the elements that make it what it is, but acknowledges that code is not final and changes/additions/fixes/improvements will still be made.

afaik, LFS is not missing any elements that will be in a final release, and the beta tag will still indicate that there are things that still need work (AI, sound, etc).

If that's all it takes for LFS to get some more coverage, then that can only be a good thing.

Quote from RiGun :Don't think that could be possible, if what you ask is done then ppl using cracks could play S2 online

Hmm I didn't realise this feature was for pirate-protection. But OK, even if it is, can't LFS somehow remember if the server info in "Join Specific Game" came previously from a server that I had joined from the Master Server list and if the master server times out, connect me anyway?

Or maybe this is just a stupid idea
Joining server when Master Server is down.

When you choose to race online there are two options:

1) Multiplayer > Display List of Games (which queries the master server)
2) Multiplayer > Join Specific Game (where the last server you joined's details are, or where you can enter your own IP)

When Joining Specific Game, for some reason LFS still tries to connect to the Master Server. (I know this because when the Master Server was down and I tried to join the last server I was playing on using Join Specific Game, LFS tried to connect to the Master Server before timing out cuz it was unreachable).

Would it be possible when Joining Specific Game, that LFS didn't need to connect to the Master Server, and just tried the IP striaght off? This would atleast let us connect to the last server we were on when the Master Server is unreachable.
Banger Racing server is back!! But..

My favourite server is back, the banger racing one, called ---UKDirt LFS Bangers--- and using UF1s! So much fun is to be had on this server, but some ppl insist on racing on it, which is really boring.

The rules are no pitting, no resetting and no driving the wrong way, but anything else goes!

But because there is no resetting allowed, once you get flipped off your wheels you can't do anything til a kindly soul rams you back upright. But too many lamers don't do this, they concentrate on racing which really sucks.

For me, this banger racing is like playing that board game Snakes & Ladders. Playing S&L is skillless, it's the luck of the dice whether you win or not, and this is how I treat banger racing.. If i see a car not on it's wheels I make for it and give it a great big ram to try and get it back upright (and to see some funny shtuff happen often too.) but too many other people just ignore such cars and race past them

Banger Racing isn't about winning ffs, it's about creating mayhem and having a laugh. When I'm on this server I've usually got an enormous grin on my face the whole time just cuz of the mad stuff that happens.

So please, ppl who join this server, screw the racing. If you win it's not a measure of skill, but luck. But be decent ppl and ram those who aren't on their wheels please. It makes for a much more interesting server. No one is impressed if you win, trust me. Every single other server is about winning, but this one is surely different.

If you see a car on its side/roof, then use all your momentum and give it a great big ram. If that doesn't right it then do another lap to get your momentum back up and if it's still there then give it another ram. Of course, hopefully by then some other kind soul has given it a whack up the jacksie and put it back on it's wheels.

And you can still kinda do tactics if everyone is decent enough to ram all upturned cars.. If the guy behind you is closing in, then ram some other car you pass to get it on its side and then the person behind you has to waste some time to give it a ram. And of course others can do this to delay you

But plse stop serious racing on this server, it's so boring. Get stuck in, ram everything that you see not on its wheels (and anyone you don't like who is on their wheels) and have a laugh. It's much more fun!

edit: added server name and what car it uses.

Quote from Bob Smith :Is it just me, or does LFS now try to access the internet as soon as it loads, instead of just when you try to go online? IIRC I read Scawen saying he hated programs that access the net for no reason, so, err, what's changed?

Quote from Scawen :No.... nothing.

I see this too Bob. In previous patches, when I updated the files my firewall would indicate that the lfs.exe had changed and was trying to access the internet only when I looked for online games.

With the U12 patch however, as soon as I double-clicked the lfs.exe my firewall prompted me.

Sorry Scawen, but it appears something has changed in this respect!

edit: I use sygate personal firewall 5.6.2808 if it matters.

Good stuff.

There should also be a warning that if you post something retarded/dupe then you get banned from posting in that forum for a week or something.

I like compulsory pitstops. Yes they're only really useful in long races when you need fuel/tyre change/damage fix, but since I never race such long races, it's always nice to have a practice pitting on the shorter races.

It would be nice for the server admin to be able to be able to force a pitwindow, eg on a 10 lapper force a pitstop between laps 4-6 so there's some pitlane action. But before that, pitstop setup must be displayed more prominently because it's all too easy to miss pitstop-settings info.

I also use different FOVs for different cars. Just enough to have the wingmirror in view; but because cars are different widths I need different FOVs to achieve this.

Pitting on last lap sucks because you save a lot of time compared to anyone who has pitted not on the last lap.

The person pitting on the last lap gains time from them not having to get back up to top speed to do their next laps. They just pit then roll over the finish line, whilst the guys who pitted like gents used time after the pit stopped finished getting back up to speed.

It's really lame when ppl pit on their last lap then roll over the line. It's not sporting what so ever. If you want to win that bad, go race the AI, then you can be a winner every race.

yeah, real men use mice!
there's some unbelievabley fast mouse drivers out there (NOS PBU I'm looking at you ) and it's perfectly possible to enjoy lfs with a mouse. Of course, you're at a slight disadvantage because of the digital accelerate/brake but you can still put in respectable times.

You have to set up your brake force for the 'worst' corner of the track. So for example, when you're taking a tight corner after a fast downhill piece of track, your max brake force mustn't lock the wheels. But that means on other easier corners you won't be using as much brake force as you might otherwize be able to, so you have to brake a little earlier.

And some corners are harder for mousers than others because of digital brakes (damn corner on fern bay that's real bouncy on the lead up is tough because you can't brake smoothly on it).

And RW cars are harder to drive with the mouse that FW cars, which might limit what you can drive competitively and safely.

And also, whilst 5-10 lap races are ok for mousers, with longer races (and certainly with more powerful cars) your tyres will wear faster than those who can be gentle with their braking.

I stick with the lower-power FW cars myself, but you can still have great fun, great races and it's always nice to spank wheelers

btw: I use left mouse for accelerate, right for brake, and S and D for changing gears (auto-clutch).

I guarantee* that I'm the best and fastest demo racer. But since I don't have the demo installed, and I have no intention of installing it, you'll just have to take my word for it

*not a guarantee.

Quote from kevoman93 :can LFS give you viruses on your computer?

If you download LFS using links on the lfs webpage, then it is highly unlikely (although possible) that it will contain a virus.

But of course, viruses can attach themselves to .exe files (amongst others), so if you're already infected a virus could be on lfs.exe

And if you download a cracked copy of LFS, then that could contain _anything_.

Add me to the list who thinks the fonts in the cockpit are great, but doesn't like the fonts for the HUD timers. I find their 7-segments-font for HUD times hard to read but great in car !!
