Physics model - Major issue that needs resolving?
MicroSpecV
S3 licensed
Hi, I've not come up with a strong enough argument nor found the will to actually right this down because there's every chance the dev team would turn a deaf ear, but I feel in order for the Sim to progress and gather a wider array of drivers and lesser skill gap, the following has to change.

What should be changed, you ask?

Powersliding to gain time. "Mario Karting", drifting, soap bar cornering, however you name it.

B2r Rayman, [FM] GTi Thursday BL1X

This may be a constant annoyance I am sure for those drivers who race in multiple sims - having to adjust the driving style to suit the physics model that encourages an unrealistic handling of the car is definitely not right.

What is powersliding/mario karting, you may ask?
In LFS, slower cars, or cars with lesser downforce require the driver to rotate the car using the rear in order to maintain a higher corner speed and exit. This is only possible with a set-up that is remotely fast. You may see this in tracks with quick, sweeping corners, or in slower cars, particularly the XRG. If you maintained a more realistic and normal driving style by entering the corner neutral, you will often see your time delta fade away compared to the faster men and women. The faster you go, the more exaggerated this maneuver becomes.

Faster cars are not spared either! Seen a BF1 lap of a fast driver around Blackwood, FOX at South City, or a FXR on Westhill yet? Same thing, same problem.

On the contrary, yes, you can indeed drive the cars with a traditional driving style, being slow in, fast out, rear following the front, and still be quite fast on your own accord. But, would you be nearly as fast as the world record holders or faster racers?
Well.... no. It's physically (heh, pun!) impossible in LFS.
To add on to that, in certain tracks, the abuse of the handbrake to lock up the rear axle to promote more frontal rotation just makes the entire immersion and realism of driving quickly in the sim just a chore and not a fun experience for those whom stay true to their driving style and are unable to change it to suit what LFS offers currently. Every car just feels like it wants to be trashed around like a Rotax Go Kart.

For me, after several years of racing here on LFS, I have somewhat grown accustomed to the powersliding style that gains time. However, I find it hard to transition quickly from car to car or track to track and be quick on the spot - even when I consider myself pretty adaptable to different cars. Coming from a good racing knowledge background and watching tons of races across several leagues, it's hard to wrap the brain around the LFS car handling at times.

To end off, this is an example of how cars should behave, and what LFS should aim for in terms of realistic handling.

I'd rather have an slightly understeery, more true to "real-life" base handling physics that set ups could work to improve, rather than a model that encourages the exploitation of lateral grip. Where's the slip limit gone for the rears in LFS?

Slow-ish Toyota GT86s around a fast sweeping Phillip Island

What are your thoughts, and do you think the next major update for the tire physics/handling model should resolve or make changes to this issue?

Layout Racing League - Round 7, Rony Sprint 8, Race Summary

The fast-paced roval crafted by layoutter Rony holds Round 7 for Layout Racing League! With the [TC] Gumball 2019 as well as holiday activities kicking off, it was opportunities galore for the drivers who turned up for the race before the mid-season Summer break! [6S] SIMOX claims another fantastic win to leap into the top of the standings!

Qualifying

With traction and braking being key to the fast lap, drivers set out to find the best line possible. It was [MRc] Michal who set the early pace before Teho Ngottini pipped him. Shortly after followed [6S] SIMOX, fresh from his victory the round before, who slowly chipped away the pole time right down into the sub-1 minute times - the only driver to do so!

AA|Kadir made a comeback to the lead, qualifying a respectable 3rd ahead of Michal who was unable to find time. Behind came AS|Swiftz, [LCS-R] Texas and a surprisingly quick GT4tube. AA|Rane made a return to the series, putting his XRT in a lowly 12th with little practice, just ahead of {PROJECT}, who failed to qualify under the 107% minimum time.

Green flag for Round 7!

Side by side into Turn 1!

The flag dropped to the sound of tire squeal as the drivers put the power down off the grid, with Kadir getting an excellent launch to pass Ngottini into the braking zone, with several drivers coming close to contact as the field navigated the first turn. The leaders exited the turn 3 wide, with AA|Kadir getting the best traction to take the lead away from SIMOX as they headed into the Chicane.

Late braking goes wrong for newcomer JereLoco

As the front of the field departed, further to the back, an incident saw front-runner Ngottini get spun around by an out-of-control JereLoco after a misjudgement, with the latter receiving a Drive-Through Penalty for his actions.

JereLoco would later put himself out of the race after attempting to illegally, and impossibly, complete his compulsory pit during his penalty - getting stuck on his pit box due to an LFS glitch, suffering the same fate as SIMOX earlier in the season, forced to retire on Lap 5.

Meanwhile in all of this, GT4tube saw himself lose a spot to the fast-starting [LCS-R] Texas, as he got tangled up in the crash, with Texas now right up with the leading duo, with Kadir and SIMOX tussling it out before a small gap formed.

Kadir leads the field on Lap 3

With SIMOX seemingly unable to match the early pace of Kadir, he kept watch of his tires, weary of the high-demands of the circuit, with [MRc] Michal briefly getting past Texas down into the hairpin before the LCS-R driver retook third position.

Further down the field, GT4Tube held down 5th ahead of AA|Rane in 6th, who found himself elevated from 12th during the first lap calamity. At the back, victim of Lap 1 incident Ngottini took the chance to pit to clear his compulsory stop and to emerge in clear track, with his sights set for an ambitious podium. He followed this up with blistering early pace, threatening the mid-pack!

Weak defense sees a lead change

As the first stint of the race extended, it was obvious that the early pace of Kadir was shortlived, spending his tires too fast, falling back into the clutches of SIMOX who took the pass for the lead on Lap 7, around the outside of Turn 1 in swashbuckling fashion.

Mid-field battles during the pit stops

The race entered a lull period, with most drivers evidently choosing to pit later in the race, choosing to make time on track. Kadir was unable to keep his tires in check, falling back from SIMOX, as Texas slowly caught up. Behind, Michal, GT4Tube and Rane were all on their own piece of track as the field spread out.

Mid way through the race however, the mid-field suddenly spiced up, with Texas making a blunder into Turn 1, gifting 3rd to Michal, barely defending 4th from GT4tube into the final hairpin.

Comedy of errors see [LCS-R] Texas drop behind GT4tube in the mid field battle

A few laps passed before we saw more action, with Michal faintly defending his position from Texas, with the latter braking too late, creaming into the side of the MRc driver, sending both sideways and slowing down massively, with GT4Tube simply taking a wider line to sweep past Texas to elevate himself up to 4th, where he would hold to the end of the race for his best finishing position to date.

With only 3 laps to go, Michal was now clear of GT4tube by a margin, with Texas behind the Cruise racer, unable to close in. Behind them lay the charging Ngottini, who by now was within earshot of a podium once the drivers in front pitted.

Towards the rear, Rane and [WCL] T.Soini were in 7th and 8th, positions which they would hold to the end to finish what was a uneventful event for them. Behind, [F1] Speed'D! ran in 9th, running 2 laps down after a slow pit stop.

The pit stops saw battles near the end of the race

Lap 33 saw GT4Tube blink first, choosing to pit and emerge in a gap to attempt to fend off Ngottini. With this, it all but denied Texas an undercut, of which he should have taken much earlier if he stood a chance of leapfrogging GT4tube and possibly Michal; however, it was not to be, with Texas pitting the lap after along with Michal.

Texas pitted on the penultimate lap, and emerged behind Ngottini, which summed up a bad outing for the LCS-R racer. Ngottini on the other hand, put pressure on GT4Tube to the end, however, he had to settle for 5th, which in itself was a great comeback, considering he was facing the wrong way on Lap 1 in last place - proving once more the importance of a good strategy here in LRL!

In what was a display of prowess and great management, [6S] SIMOX takes yet another victory to vault himself up into the lead of the standings! Kadir finished in 2nd citing bad tires as the cause of his failure to mount a challenge, finishing over 12 seconds behind the winner and only a couple of seconds ahead of 3rd place man, [MRc] Michal.

Driver's Championship as of Round 7

With Pete now behind SIMOX by a hair and Trespasser now on the back foot heading into the the summer break, the racers will surely be reflecting on their season and plotting a strategy to win the next race! Who will be victorious on our return for the final 2 races of LRL Season 1?

Layout Racing League - Round 6, Woodland Park, Race Summary

The drivers come back from the mid-season break to tackle the fast-flowing circuit of Woodland Park for Layout Racing League Round 6! Several close battles and great passes throughout the field, with tire management the key to success - [6S] SIMOX claiming his maiden win in the series, vaulting him closer to the top 2 in the standings!

Qualifying

High speed stability and traction caught drivers out as they struggled to tame the powerful FZ5 around the track. With championship heavyweight [TC-R] Pete unable to attend the event citing personal reasons and J.Pickard absent, it was a open shootout for Qualifying!

SIMOX set the early pace as the session began, with Teho Ngottini close behind, trading fastest laps ahead of L.Rydh and B2r Rejekt. The top qualifiers were separated by nearly nothing, with Ngottini ultimately finding speed where it counted to grab his first Pole Position in the series. SIMOX and Rydh settled for P2 and P3 respectively, with Rejekt and [LCS-R] Texas right behind; these 5 were the only drivers to break the 1:12 barrier.

Championship chaser Trespasser relished in P6 ahead of newcomers Merenul and 3skimas, both of which put in great laps. Another newcomer and veteran [FFM]NUmber managed to put his car 10th, while the likes of GT4Tube and [WCL] T.Soini rounded the back of the field, with [MRc] KIG and PitlaneRacer unable to start the race, having qualified outside the 107% minimum time.

It's pedal to the metal for Round 6!

Drivers racing down into Turn 2

The race started cleanly for everyone, with drivers searching for their own piece of estate as they charged into Turn 2. SIMOX managed to get a brilliant launch off the grid to lead the race, as Teho Ngottini fended off the fast-starting [LCS-R] Texas.

Further back, [r]Jeff fought with [FFM] Number as GaboR went around the outside of several cars, only to come unstuck with the lightest of touches with L.Rydh sending the latter spinning.

The field closely packed as the first stint continued

With the field very similarly-paced, the drivers found themselves entwined in battles from front to back!

Trespasser found an avenue around Texas, as B2r Ayoub MaRoC, GaboR and LLM Sobis battled for the minor placings near the rear end of the points. RG Mandula dived in at the start of Lap 2 for an extremely early pit stop, choosing to drop out of the battle for an undercut. Jeff made an error at Turn 2, outbraking himself in a botched maneuver and taking a half-spin tapping GaboR, letting rookie G.Graham pass and falling behind GT4Tube. Ironically both GaboR and Jeff would soon retire with a an accident and disconnect respectively.

Meanwhile up front, SIMOX showed the pace by gapping the field, with Ngottini unable to lap at the same speed, forming a small train behind him after just only 5 laps. Trespasser soon found a way past after a slip up from the Teho driver.

B2r MaRoC rolls in a slow-speed accident out of Becketts complex

With the field spreading out and SIMOX clocking out up front, it looked like the tire management phrase of the race was soon to hit, however, all came to ends with B2r Ayoub MaRoC getting crossed up at the Maggots-Becketts complex, rolling his car, bringing out the Safety Car on Lap 7.

Mixed strategies down the field

The first round of pit stops took place with some drivers choosing to stay out to get out of the traffic for track position, with others pitting.

The top runners pitted, with Merenul able to jump ahead of Ngottini with a faster pit stop, which would be crucial on the pit exit, with FFM Number filing in between both of them, much to the dismay of Ngottini.

An unfortunate lag incident on the first restart

The race restart saw SIMOX come under great pressure from B2r Rejekt who had jumped cars by not pitting. Both raced hard with great respect, as another non-pitter 3skimas, now in 3rd, defended from Trespasser. Exiting turns 2 and 3, field bunching paired with sudden lag from Trespasser saw innocent victim Rejekt lag bubbled out of the race in a spectacular airborne crash.

Both B2r drivers were now out of the race, continuing an unlucky streak for the reputed team.
The Safety Car was brought out for the second time, bunching the field up once more for a run to the flag.

The second restart

The race got underway once more with SIMOX again gapping the field as 3skimas soon found himself falling backwards with burnt out tires, pitting to clear his compulsory pit, along with a tire change, soon to charge back from the back of the field to finish 8th.

Further back, mid-field battles soon began, with drivers who suffered with tire management now tangled with drivers with better tires towards the end of the race.

Race ends for Cruise hero GT4Tube

The battles near the end of the race

RG Mandula held a good points position but soon his tires failed, with every lap that passed getting passed by drivers as he fell from 5th to 10th. Behind the top 2, [LCS-R] Texas soon found himself with great pace, passing his rivals to finish a rewarding 3rd and on the podium.

Behind him, LLM Sobis and Rydh battled for a top 5 finish, with [FFM] Number briefing in the battle before making a mistake out of the Becketts complex, rolling several times, to land back on his wheels. Rydh half-spun following a slide, letting M@CI3K past to chase after Merenul, falling just short of a 5th place finish. 3skimas brought his car home for a brilliant points finish following his tire change, with [WCL] T.Soini coming home 9th in a quiet race ahead of Mandula and Graham, with [FFM] Number in the last points position.

In the end it was [6S] SIMOX who took full advantage of the incidents and absences to win a dominant race!Such pace he had that he finished just shy of 13 seconds to Teho Ngottini who finished a well-deserved 2nd with a calculated drive.

Driver's Championship as of Round 6

Who will be victorious in the next event? See you then!

Ah, alright! Thank you! All the best!

Also, if possible, could you fix/tweak the following to the patch? -
When using Race Command Message (RCM), if a driver has Blue Flags, the Blue Flag message takes priority over any RCM, which causes some drivers to miss things said through RCM. Such example happened during a race (LRL) when lapped cars and Safety Car driver (who was down on laps) failed to see the Safety Car in/out RCM message due to being Blue Flag spammed. Not sure if the same occurs with Yellow Flag, but I think so from memory!

Perhaps Flags and the RCM message could flash in an alternating pattern? So neither cancels each other. Cheers!

Quote from Scawen :Thanks, I've added this to my test patch notes. To be clear, the stuck bug is not specifically related to open configs, but to the use of a custom pit stop point.

Layout Racing League - Round 5, Mini Monaco, Race Summary

The unforgiving confines of the principality tackled by the drivers in Round 5 of the Layout Racing League! With bold overtakes and incidents throughout the race, a valiant drive by [TC-R] Pete sees him claim his third LRL win!

Qualifying

The streets of Monaco is hard to tame, as many drivers found out during the final Free Practice session. Qualifying kicked off with J.Pickard making a rare cameo appearance in the series, and setting the track alight in the early stages along with [LCS-R] Ltras and Pete, as drivers struggled to find an opening to get a clear lap.

Trespasser was absent from the event, unable to make it in time, which gave a chance for Pete to gain points - however, he was pushed to 4th by the top qualifiers, while newly-recruited Team Teho driver Ngottini and [6S] SIMOX somehow found time on the green track to get 2nd and 3rd. The pole was secured mid-way through qualifying by Pickard, who set a blistering 1:16.9 to put himself 3 tenths clear of the next car.

Azyer made a reappearance into the league since his quiet temporary departure from Air Attack, placing his UF1 a respectable 5th on the grid ahead of Texas, who suffered with traffic in the closing stages of the session. His teammate Ltras, unable to find pace, laid in 10th, just behind (FR) Seb and ahead of M@CI3K. [TC-R] Adam barely made it on time to set a lap, with less than a second to spare as he crossed the line to begin his do-or-die lap - landing him a position near the back with Dude and [WCL] T.Soini.

It's go for Round 5 of LRL!

Field negotiating the first corner

With a long run into turn 1, drivers aimed to gain positions but most were denied by the confines of the circuit - essentially falling line-of-stern as they exited the corner. Pickard maintained his all-important lead whilst behind him, [TC-R] Pete threaded the needle between Ngottini and SIMOX to slip by into 2nd.

Ngottini then went wide at Turn 2, giving up a spot to [LCS-R] Texas. Further behind, mid-field jostling resulted in a spin for [AMG] Derinus, dropping him to the back of the pack. The end of Lap 1 saw [TC-R] Adam come in for an pitstop to undercut, hoping to make up time on the cars ahead.

PitlaneRacer rolls exiting the Tunnel

As the race settled in for what was to be a long first stint, it was clear the top 4 had a pace difference, and were slowly gapping 5th-placed Ngottini. A train of cars were soon forming behind the Teho driver, stretching from Azyer in 6th all the way down to [MRc] Michal in 13th, with Azyer eyeing up an overtake before the first Safety Car period was called due to a roll by PitlaneRacer.

The drivers at the front blinked and took a their mandatory pit stop, however, Pickard chose to stay out to maintain track position, with the [LCS-R] boys of Ltras and Texas also choosing not to pit as well. Further in the mid-field, drivers were split on pitting and staying out, thus mixing in the positions as the field prepared for the restart. In the tight pit lane, [TC-R] Elmo led ahead of a train of cars, stopping on the first pit-stall, which resulted in being rear-ended by M@CI3K with nowhere to go and with cars behind him. The resulting time lost saw Elmo drop out of a point's paying position.

Pickard dropped the hammer and led away in a perfectly executed restart, ahead of Texas, with Pete the meat in a [LCS-R] sandwich ahead of Ltras who had not pitted.

Tight mid-field battles

As the field slowly spread out again once more, mid field duels were occuring throughout - M@CI3K and [MRc] Michal fought over 10th as [TC-R] Elmo slowly picked positions off from the back. [TC-R] Adam had a brief tussle with B2r Rayman, pulling off a stunning sequence of switchbacks to pass the B2r driver.

Out at the front, the front runners were pulling away once more, with Pickard pulling out a small lead over Texas, with Pete in third still unable to find a way past. Ltras lay forth just ahead of a recovering SIMOX, with Ngottini and Azyer fighting it out for fifth.

An uncharacteristic error

With the mid-field tight and frustrations brewing, B2r MaRoC made an unforced error chasing his rival Derinus, rolling over the same anti-cut as PitlaneRacer, causing another Safety Car.

Pickard, with his lead over 2nd, pitted to complete his pit stop, as well as Ltras. Pickard emerged in 5th ahead of Azyer, while Ltras came out in 9th, only just beating M@CI3K to the pit exit merging line. [WCL] T.Soini running at the back, pitted on the end of the Safety Car period with ample space to chase the cars ahead. GT4Tube, running in a good position, threw away his race with a pit exit violation, earning him a penalty.

The chasing pack on Restart 2

The restart saw the field status quo, with drivers timing their restarts right to not get overtaken. A late braking move into Turn 1 however, saw B2r Rayman pass LLM Sobis for 14th. Meanwhile, up front, [LCS-R] Texas was being hounded by the chasing pack, with Pete searching for opportunities to slip one up the inside.

The move for the lead

Lap 15 and Pete took his chance with a bold pass at the Swimming Pool to take the lead of the race. With a great run through Louis Chrion, an inside line saw the [TC-R] driver draw alongside at the braking zone, with Texas leaving the door wide open, only to realise too late, making contact at the apex, sending the [LCS-R] driver wide and giving SIMOX a great run down into La Rascasse to steal 2nd away as well.

3rd Safety Car period, caused by GT4Tube

At the back of the pack, LLM Sobis was heading a small train of cars, after getting dropped by the drivers in front, with [AMG] Derinus right behind. We saw the third appearance of the Safety Car after GT4Tube, running in a lonely 16th, made an error exiting Swimming Pool.

Race finishing under Safety Car

The 3rd restart began and went on for only a short while before Rayman tripped over the chicane, rolling over on the penultimate lap, bringing out the Safety Car. Unfortunate circumstances saw Dude and LLM Sobis disconnect with only a few kilometers to the finish. In what was a race of attrition, the final lap was taken under the Safety Car, driven by Dekojester, ending the race under yellow.

In an exciting race with a nail-biter finish, it was ultimately [TC-R] Pete who once again proved why he deserves to run with the top racers, claiming his 3rd LRL win and taking a 18-point lead over Trespasser. Pickard, who looked favourite to win the race, was let down by a bad strategy, setting the fastest lap in showing he had the pace to win. SIMOX, Ngottini and Azyer held their own in 3rd, 4th and 5th, with a stunning recovery drive by Ltras to finish 6th. [MRc] Michal finished a decent outing in 8th while [TC-R] Adam was the mover of the race, claiming points from a lowly starting position.

Derinus was sadly disqualified after failing to serve a Drive-Through Penalty in the required laps, dropping him out of his points position.

Driver's Championship as of Round 5

Pete regains his championship lead heading into the second half of the season! Will he be able to be LRL's first Driver's Champion?

Round 6 - Woodland Raceway, FZ5 (27 July 2019)
Round 7 - Rony RGE Sprint 8 Reversed, XRT (3 August 2019) [Subject to change]

Quote from k_badam :Nova, there are 2 Washingtons in the USA, the city, and the state. Both in different time zones. Also, I think Tokyo should have been 0:15 not 12:15 as that would be midday.

Ah yes, thank you. Tokyo is 0;15.

A brief explanation about the incident:
I was hit from behind when pulling into the first pit stall, which caused be to spin and lose just over 4 seconds. This cost me 2 places (I would have crossed the pit-exit SC line right behind Jeff, based on time loss).
M@CI3K didn't brake at all and only lifted off throttle briefly as contact was made.

Above mentioned incident will be investigated
