make sure that your choice has a decent gpu and not none of the intel Cr@p

I have a samsung ativ 7 all in one for my graphics and music work(basically laptop components) and it has the intel i3 3220 2.4gz processor and 16gb ram yet with the intel 2500 graphics it struggles to run even lfs at a good fps

Quote from vrajunar :Something like that.

In my opinion is better no give announcements, just release and stop, because players want things now

it seems like you want things "now" and the majority are just waiting and looking forward to the release

Quote from tristancliffe :I'd define "a few" as more than 2, and less than about 10 or 12 ish. Anything more probably becomes a few months. I certainly wouldn't rigidly stick to the structure that more than 4 weeks (of an estimation done in the head, probably on the spur of the moment, judging expected progress given known joblist) suddenly equals "a month" etc.

It was a flexible date, intended to say "it won't be the next few days, but neither should it be months and months or years from now".

So relax.

Quote from Slovakia ring :Scawen 21st June 2014, 15:14 - Westhill Update: We expect to release this version for testing in a few weeks I expect this week, you're writing few weeks no few months ?
Most people understand a few of weeks- maximum 4 weeks if not this is just another deception :/

Just wait and see !! we have both had LFS for a very short time compared to most here, so if others can have a little more patience after the time they have been waiting already then im sure you could

there isnt a given figure for a few so he didnt give an exact timeframe for it too be done within
even though id also like it sooner rather than later

i totally disagree with the statement about f1 drivers having the most finely tuned bodies, virtually any physical sports requires a lot more physically for example boxing and swimming ect, but i would agree that mentally they would have to be razor sharp to be an f1 driver

Quote from Degats :The vast majority of LCD monitors are still only 60-75Hz max. 120Hz CRTs used to be fairly common (at lower resolutions at least), but mainstream LCDs still haven't caught up.

The main reason for the 100Hz limit is because that's what the outer physics loop runs at. There's generally no point, other than for sync reasons, to run any faster than that as things will only change on screen at max 100Hz.
Sure, you can brag you're running at 300FPS, but only 1 in 3 frames will actually be different, so all you're doing is stressing your GPU and wasting power.

besides 3d monitors which are usually 120Hz but yeah that is then 60hZ per eye

filled it in my FOV i usually have set between 79-86 for fbm and around 90 for other cars, just feels better for me, fps is mostly 120+ and at times (ky1 with not many on the server) can be between 200-300l,never used fps limit as never felt the need

again off topic but regarding recent stuff that has discussed

little extract regarding the amount of people still using xp

Quote from aaltomar :You know when they take polls, they usually ask around say 1500 people and give an error margin +-3% when they measure how the political parties are divided.

So when Steam has a userbase of over 65 million gamers, I'd say the stats are a very good indicator of the overall specs people game with.

7.3 million users max online on avg on any given day which is 7.3 that like using steam and how many are duplicate accounts held by banned users ect and there are a lot more that dont use it

and hi victor how are you

Quote from aaltomar :Single core ~3%
dual core ~48%
triple core(?) ~3%
Quad core ~44%
Hexa core ~2%

So 97% of Windows based Steam users have better than a single core CPU.

Windows XP 32/64bit users ~5%
Vista users ~3%
Windows 7 ~62%
Windows 8 ~25%

So XP is almost dead at 5% and Linux is still around 5% amongst gamers.

based on steams stats, which how many % dont and have never used steam so not a real comparision on actual total number ooutside steam.

Anyone know if Origin have stats for similar things

those who i consider too be the best drivers like the late IMOL and also n0zzz they would be happy to share theyre setups when ive asked and along with that some advice/tips. I understand that in a leauge its all about the competition so that is one side of the coin but its a different story LFS online daily racing. Id guarantee that even the ones that say they made their own setup actually have made it/altered over time a setup which was originally someone elses

Quote from danielroelofs :LFS, is still the best racing sim there is imo.. I had plenty of fights with people now kissing devs' asses after they announced updates but completely destroyed lfs with words before.

Anyways.. as LFS is the best >> SIM << I think it should be as realistic as possible. This means people should be building sets themselves as this is part of racing. I spend days and weeks on my server to build the best possible sets myself, 1 because i like doing it and 2. because it makes you a lot faster if you know what you are doing and why.

Especially in endurance races.. a setup can play a hugely important role in strategies, which is what endurance racing makes that much fun. This is why Corse developed their XRR set from scratch themselves when we took part in GTWS. I tried to build in some benefits vs the other competitors. when our set would be the absolute best compared to the others.. I would not like to see my possible advantage over the others, been thrown away for nothing although I was the one putting effort in it.

In order to remain loyal to the name of the game >> simulator << I would say; make it at least as hard as possible to steal setups. Setups are an important role in racing and DO make a lot of difference.

hi danny . its where to draw the line though. nearly every setup that we may make or currently have will be based on someone elses setup unless we make a copy of the default setup and start from there

Quote from Warper :Great. I also just wanted to add an idea I had on the way home while reading the thread updates on my phone.

If you cant force people not to hack the setups, can you make it public when they did? Maybe its impossible to secure them, but what about any kind of identifier defined per setup which is then stored on your servers. If anybody uses this setup, and they have no right to, you issue a warning/message on the host.

I havent thought it through but generally my idea is to think in another direction. Dont secure the setup, secure the usage of a setup.

how many setups evolve from one passed to them by fellow racers who over time alter it and then pass it too another friend, how would it work out then.Im sure it would be quite a bit of work to get it fully implemented into lfs(im no programmer so could be wrong)

My opinion. Some of the top racers (past/present) never minded passing a setup to those that i believe showed an honest interest in improving there own laptimes/driving and also showed respect for the work put into them and appreciation

Quote from Nilex :After a few less then 10 years Dennis, only you weren't aware of it. All of your hard work was a continuation of someones else hard work and so on. You, or anyone else, would loose nothing.
Only people who would loose are those that still believe that they're the only ones stealing other people sets. Expression of their faces would be priceless, oh well gotta rely on imagination

Of course the best solution would be optional set sharing but from what i heard it's not possible. What would be possible is to make it harder to steal temporarily, at a cost of performance and development time.

This way everybody would be forced to be a kind, sharing person™

The setup sharing sites would still make sense as a readily available repository, the stealing tools wouldn't need to be updated and the replays would still store the setups you wish to steal (advanced version takes the set right under the nose of the person on the server, and even that is few years old). Some cool stuff there.
It would largely help newbies at well, not to mention saving the race winner's time to find and SS every person on the server who asked for a damn set.

* * *

Got a few ideas how to handle the transition, to expand on Anthoop's example. I am all for freely shared sets since i heard about the whole stealing business, at least until a good solution to prevent it permanently is found. And even then I'd like to see an option to make sets free to download while driving on server.
Some examples i came up with:

1) Some way to keep an option to send set (S) explicitly to a person, to let it known to him that he received it. Same as now, but to keep it this way if possible. So theres no need to tell that person: hey, take this set now I want you to try it later; how i imagine it would work in the new system.
2) Improve on 1) by leaving the set downloadable even after the sender spectates, pits or even leaves the server. Perhaps gray out the button with his nick in the latter case and remove the line after the set is saved. If multiple sets from the same person are sent and the previous set wasn't yet saved, overwrite the sent set with the newest version.
3) Some simpler way to distinguish when a set is received or being available to download for others. Even after 7 years i get confused what is S / SS
4) Optional info message about who has saved your setup. Although, it might get irritating in some cases so an additional option to block that specifically instead the whole chat. Ego booster thats proportional to the message/skills ratio

Things of that nature, keeping the usability and improving accessibility bit by bit.

+1 agree with every word

Quote from Dennis93 :So you're telling me, after over 10 years all the setups i've spent days, weeks, to develop setups, that just because a few wise guys can't built their own setups, it's completely okay to steal?!

It's just a handful of guys, it's not really hard to find the source, i'd help the 'investigation', because I can easely name a few who used/uses it, friends or foes, they all go in the same boat.

All what LFS stands for would easely be broken and turned into a kindergarten for people who likes to cross where it's easiest.

Dont allow it Scawen, it's not okay to welcome hackers.

its not ok to steal but its is better when good people dont mind letting others trying them without thinking they are some precious piece of gold

Quote from Eclipsed :Well, you're comparing 2 different things - like you said in demo servers a bad driver with better setup won't drive better,it's just lack of skill. While in top leagues, where drivers are top level and pretty much even skilled, the right setup might decide the edge - if suspention is better optimized for track conditions or gears are perfectionized to be able use the most possible engine power at most times or there's found the best compromise between downforce and straight line speed. And all this is set up after hard work. Do you think it's fair, that some are working hard week before race to make the car better for a league race and someone else just joins server hour before race, downloads other's (the hard workers) setup and has it without doing anything for it? Of course the experience at practice still plays a big role.

One thing what might bring fresh air to racing - changing conditions. That would throw out the need for hard work on setups for one constant situation and add need to addapt to changing situation. Wishes,wishes...

there are plenty of very good demo racers dont get me wrong, low 1.12s who would/have benifited from setups given to them,My using of the word "bad" maybe incorrect i should of used the word "slower"

Also because people race in leagues it dont make them pro's compared to them that dont. With the few exceptions i see demo/ and non league drivers with 3 times more mileage in half the time and with good laptimes

Also honestly more likely than not the setups are ones given to them in the first place that they have used as a base to work from and unless there should be no reason to not share unless they feel the person who asked would then surpass there skill suddenly

we have done our leagues and competitions and always promote a friendly atmosphere where people dont mind helping others , maybe its what the leaugues your on about are lacking

Quote from MonkeyHead :Evidence: Try to drive oval with minimum wings and then try again with maximum wings, are you still able to drive same laptimes?

So yeah, setups can be important and there are many reasons why it hurts league racing that much. Some of them were mentioned above already but also it becomes more interesting when there are more drivers/teams with different setups and different strategies but nowadays it's often so that everyone just steals the best available setup and maybe does some small changes to make the setup fit theirself and everybody got the same strategies.

setup is only a fraction of the overall performance of the racer.I see it all the time on on the demo servers when someone does a good time and then people start asking for the setup and they still drive as bad/same as previously

It does on the odd occassions help the driver if they were previously using a setup that setup totally wrong

Quote from Amynue :While new Westhill looks great, I can't help to notice that there is one thing which looks rather awful. It's the shadows. I mean, look at this:
http://i.imgur.com/65GaXQx.jpg
With red I've marked the shadows which look either weird or out of place. Yeah, that's like 80% of all shadows in the picture.

Some objects on the other hand don't have a shadow at all. Like cones and bilboards in here: http://www.lfs.net/page_images/screenshots/WST006.jpg

Westhill is still in developement, so it may improve, but if we take a look at existing tracks, it doesn't look any better:
http://i.imgur.com/d49ujMP.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/o2Qlh7P.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/xx1Tdcp.jpg

So yeah, are there any plans to improve track shadows? I wouldn't prioritize this over finishing the tyre physics - but then again - I have no idea how much time would it take to implement better shading system for the tracks.

the shadow could be what erics still working on at the moment,be grateful for what we get and then any extra is a bonus

Quote from vitaly_m :I wonder if it was planned when current tyre model was developing: You can go 44 laps (more than 45 minutes race) on Slick R1. And this is true for many other tracks...

So the point is: it is hard to test those tyre dynamics properly (because you need lots of data), so why to bother making it perfect?

Anyway, these are good news after a bad day

Run LFS! :auto:

if the calculations are out slightly or dynamics then it even a slight error could cause big implications ingame

Quote from V8Li :I gave iRacing a try for the past 2 days, like I said I really don't have that much experience with online racing, so had to check it too since it gets great reviews... I started with a Mazda MX-5 Cup on Okayama Short course. I got some time trials and multi-car practices first and I was about 0.7s slower than the best drivers (it's a 2km). You can't make any setup changes when you first start but it might be that the other drivers could because they were higher rank, so can't know for sure, but I think I was slow. Anyway, I liked the fixed setup thing...

And I just had my first race and guess what, I won... This is the event results page: http://members.iracing.com/mem ... 1130074&custid=158185 . It was a 15 laps race and let me assure you I didn't even get on the grass one time in 15 laps, if you make the tiniest mistake and end up in the wall, race is over, the damage is very realistic. And really that's how everybody had to drive, you can see that some other drivers are higher class than me but no one took any chances, not even the 2nd driver in first corner because I kind of missed the start; all I had to do is keep the outside, he stayed on the inside but I got faster to next corner and he fell back... not even a contact, I was impressed about how clean the race started...

So I must say, a realistic damage model is a major pressure on the driver... LFS is fine and the consequences are spot on (the car geometry getting messed and such), but really they come too late, I mean you have to really damage the car. That means you can get away with many things and as a result people just drive messier. I got the point about LFS leagues where people drive better but really this was my entry-level experience in iRacing; we can safely match this to a public LFS server...

IRL a car can be knocked about quite a bit and still drive fine aslong as its not damaged things like the chassis, driveshafts ect which can take some doing in certain cars.
