The online racing simulator
Saw District 9 tonight. Pretty disappointed really.
Quote from DeadWolfBones :Rule #724 for preserving your sanity: Pay no attention to where movies rank (or don't rank) on the IMDb top 250 list (especially new movies).

you're not called Jethro gibbs are you ?

http://www.angelfire.com/folk/gibbsrules/

the thing to remember about movies is that there are more than 1 type of best movies,

1 the ones with the fantastic story / plot,

2 the ones with the fantastic performance(s),

3 the ones which, despite having a poor story and / or poor performances, are such a sensory experience that they just have to be experienced in a cinema.

avoiding recent films a good example of each would (for me as it's always in the eye of the beholder)

1 Serenity

2 Pacific heights

3 Star Wars (episode IV, a new hope)

of course quite often a movie that counts as 1 type will also count in another and ocasionally you get a movie that combines all of these.

personally no matter how great a movie is when it comes out, i refuse to consider it as an all time great till it's at least 5 years old just to discount the "new must be better" effect.

my final test is that if i've got it on DVD / Blueray / Video (remember them?) and it's showing on TV do i still watch it everytime ?
Quote from tinvek :the ones with the fantastic story / plot,

Serenity

As much as I adore Summer Glau and the rest of the Firefly/Serenity cast, I'm not so sure I agree the film had such a great plot. Personally, I enjoyed the each of the 14 Firefly episodes much more than the film.

Agreed, I think think that the series was better due to the deeper character development and IMO more of the little one liners that really portrayed the family feeling of being on Serenity. Still hate the fact it got bined. Also agree on Summer Glau

On topic though: Saw where wild things are the other day. While there was not much of a story to the film and what little story there was, was predictable it was entertaining. I left the cinema, not in 'talking about an awesome film' mood but having enjoyed the viewing exerience. If you treat it like a serious movie it wouldn't rank at all well but as, for a lack of a better word, a mindless film it was great. A good film I thought to see before christmas with its strong family message.
Films I remember watching this week,

Robots: Poor script with childish humour such as endless fart gags, but the animators put some good background jokes in inspite of the poor writing. The film is aimed at kids and as kid films go it's below average but tolerable.

Better Than Chocolate: This is a mainstay film for many lesbians because it's rellevent to gay culture, i've seen it a good half dozen times already myself. The plot is lighthearted and there's a bit of music in the middle not available as a song even on the official soundtrack and I watch it just for that. *shrug* What can I say... I gladly watch a 90 minute film for 30 seconds of accoustic bliss, but the film is pretty good - 'though i'm not sure how rellevent it is to muggles.

Kissing Jessica Stein: One of the most forgettable films i've ever watched, a non pornographic lesbian film for straight guys ... because the woman is straight afterall so the world is saved... meh. I probably just spoiled it for you so there's no point watching it now, this has saved you wasting 90 minutes of your life.

This is England: The story of a kid who gets involved with the National Front, told from the skinhead point of view the story deals with the subject of racism and prejudice and is quite an intense watch. Well worth seeing, if only for the line, "Do you want to suck my tits?".

Underworld: Vampires versus Warewolves, the film just doesn't deliver on the human element and fails to create a realistic and viable world setting, but as an action romp with a kick ass female lead who happens not to be played by my favorite kick ass bitch Milla Jovovich (lead female is Kate Beckinsdale) it's ok, and Kate wears a tight black leather outfit throughout which helps a lot. Not the best film you'll ever see but it's worth a watch.

Underworld Evolution: More of the above.

21 Grams: Guy Ritchie made one good film, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barells. This is one of his other films.

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells: Love this film! Brilliantly written, and highly entertaining. Drugs and gangs and large quantities of cash delivered in a blunt and gritty style.

Eh? 21 grams is not done by Guy Ritchie.. And Snatch is equally good as Lock Stock..

oh you are right 21 Grams is by someone else, I don't know where I got that from. Maybe I just assumed that because it was so shit, "Crickey this is aweful, is it a Guy Ritchie film?" etc etc...

I havn't seen Snatch.
Just watched 2012 and I have to say that I enjoyed my whiskey induced new years hang-over more!

Pff, 21 Grams is just a great film from a great director.

Your feature opinions on films are irelevant 21 Grams is a beautiful film (we are talking about same film right? With Sean Penn?)... and you haven't seen Snatch yet..
Quote from DeadWolfBones :IMO the only truly excellent science fiction film of the last 10 years was Primer.

just watched it and ill probably have to watch it again thanks to the truely terrible pacing of the movie
the first 50 minutes or so of it trickle by with not much happening after which the director must have noticed that they are running out of time and the entire rest of the movie is extremely compressed to the point where you have to fill in well more than half the story

He definitely doesn't spoonfeed it to you.

I thought it was paced pretty well, personally. You just don't realize what's happening is important until later on.
Surrogates.

Why did they remake I, Robot?
I didn't think it was anywhere near as good as iRobot, was worth the watch at most but I feel I should get a hold of iRobot again, good to watch films a couple of years later..
Taken (2008), the guy did kill every single person that attacked him and thats not realistic but that doesn't matter for me because i liked it.
Quote from de Souza :Session 9.

Great film. Watched it for the first time a few months ago. Definitely in my top five films i saw last year.
Saw Avatar 3D. What a waste of money. Left the cinema rather annoyed.
I enjoyed Avatar, but we didn't see the point in paying the extra for the 3D version (especially since it doesn't work for the gf). I reckon the first half of the movie is better than the second though.

Recommend a film you've seen lately.
