Quote from Joris :I believe this allready is one of the proposals from the FIA.

I should start paying closer attention

The idea does make sense to me - much more so than a standard engine. If its done well, it could help even the playing field and at the same time reduce the costs... at least the engine costs. The big teams are going to think twice about building stupidly expensive engines if they have to then supply half of the grid with them at a huge loss.
At the same time, it gives the manufacturers another arena in which to compete.

What the FIA could do is allow teams to build their own custom engines, but make it a rule that they must in return make those engines available to any other teams for a fixed (nice and low) price - so the big budget teams can spend loads of cash and show off their engine building prowess, but the minows can get a competitive engine at a reasonable price.

Quote from ferraif40 :Then the whole stink about favortism came up, and I belive McLaren backed Hamilton, instead of their number 1 driver, alonso.

I still support Alonso. However I admit Hamilton is a good driver, but I hate him!

Jon

hmm, Maclaren said that they didn't have a no1 driver Alonso got all exited because he wanted special treatment, so a 'stink' developed between maclaren and alonso... therefor you 'hate' Hamilton?
Hamilton had nothing to do with Alonsos fight with Ron Denis (apart from the fact that he kept beating alonso fair and square on the track).

Why do you choose to irrationaly hate a person who had no direct connection to your reason for hatred ?
Hate is a very strong emotion it means "to feel intense dislike, or extreme aversion or hostility."... the kind of thing that people feel when someone robs them, or some criminal on the news murders children etc.
How come so many here feel hate towards Hamilton and then give irrational reasons that have little if anything to do with Hamilton e.g. 'Alonso vs Maclaren'... 'James Allen said Hamilton is the new Senna' etc.

Just because you don't explicitly like someone doesn't mean you have to hate them.
Do you really hate him? if so what is the real reason?

Quote from Mustafur :Seen the words coming out of dawguk lately.

I Critise Hamiltons attitude and i get called an idoit, i give an example and then i need to grow up it seems.

I mean, im an Aussie and yes one of my favourite drivers is Webber, but i will happily critise him if need be.

I am not saying Hamilton is untalented here or anything, as I've said before he is up top...

Maybe dawguk and you are among the 'minority of exceptions' I noted in my post ?
Quote :
I just dont like hes character

oh, maybe you're not an exception after all - how can you know the guys character... unless you've spent time with him personally... maybe you have ? if so, my apologies.
EDIT:
dawguk is definately not an exception either - looking back through this thread, there is nothing he has said that is in any way extreme or unreasonable, on the contrary going by his posts in this thread he seems aware of Hamiltons faults and defends him using calm language and sound logic.
If you think he has been in some way extreme in his posts in this thread, you really need to go back and look at his them, then rethink your point of view.

Quote : the way he drives contridicts the words that come from hes mouth.

Just like many top sportsmen... they sometimes say the wrong thing, and sometimes do the wrong thing... seems like Hamilton is just like many others. Most of the time he does the right thing and says the right thing... it's just a shame that those times are ignored by the haters, who prefer the times when he's got it wrong.

Quote from Jertje :but you're going to have to do some self-reflection and maybe come to the conclusion that you might not be cheering for Lewis Hamilton the person, but Lewis Hamilton the success-story instead.

that makes me chuckle and grimace at the same time!

There are a lot of people on here booing and attacking Hamilton based on media misrepresentation and lies about things he is supposed to have said - they hate the 'success story' and the way ITV and other media present it...

Surely if you can only justifiably be a fan of Hamilton as a person and not a fan of 'his story', you would have to spend some time with him to get to know him? and likewise to 'hate' him as so many here seem to, you would also have to know him personally ?

-----------------------------------------------------

This whole thread is completely depressing.
It's sad that if you are from the UK and you support Hamilton (for any reason) you are ridiculed as a 'fanboy', and yet if you 'hate' Hamilton, it seems to be perfectly acceptable to back that up with a bunch of media bull, exaggeration and logical fallacy.

For the most part the 'fanboys' seem reasonable people who do acknowledge the stupid things Hamilton has said and done but are willing to forgive him those in exchange for the great racing and attacking style.
On the other hand the 'Hami Haters' are a much more hysterical group, there seems to be very little justification for the level of vitriol aimed at Hamilton and his fans by these people - you'd think he was a rapist or something by the level of hatred there seems to be here.
(There are a minority of exceptions on both sides)

You have to accept that people choose to support(or not) sports stars based on their 'story' as portrayed in the media because that's as close as you are going to get to them.
On the other for a person to develop the level of hatred and resentment that exists towards Hamilton based on the same media representation seems to me to be very unhealthy - my level of respect for some of the members here has gone down a long way as a result

very sad indeed.

Mind you the FIA have a long history of suggesting all sorts of hair-brained ideas that never see the light of day. This sort of thing is usually used to stir up the teams to come up with alternative solutions to problems that don't necessarily exist, other than in Berni and Maxi's head.

Alternatively, it could just be that they're trying to deflect interest away from the recent spate of unfair penalties.
If they suggest some ridiculous regulation changes, maybe the media and fans will forget about the current problems and move on to that... then they can withdraw the new regulations idea and everyone will think they are great

if i post it here on the forum than its public (unless i say its privat)
can't hepl it if they abuse this but that dosn't make it right (as with copying music ,photo's ....)
and its not the end of the world

For your skins to be usable in LFS everyone has to have a copy of them, so for there to be any point in having skins, you must allow every user to obtain a copy freely.

For someone to use your skin on their car, they don't need to make an extra copy, so copyright is irrelevant in this case.

You don't have the ability in LFS to grant or refuse individuals the right to have a copy of your skin, its either everyone or no-one, so all your stuff about "i don't give permission to use for themselves but only to show my car properly" is nonsense.
It's either freely available public skin or no skin.... that's your choice plain and simple. If you choose to upload your skin the LFS world, then others can decide to use your skin whether you like it or not.
If you are polite and explain that you would rather they didn't, they *might* agree and stop using it. If you start shouting and calling them names... and demanding that they stop using it, followed with legal threats and forum tantrums, then it is highly likely that they will tell you where to shove it, and make every effort to use each new skin you design just to wind you up.

hmm, personally, I think this is a bit silly - if others use your skins, then take it as a compliment. If you want to keep original, keep updating the skins and use a cryptic filename as already suggested (or make a distinctive but crap skin like mine that noone else will want to use .

That said, maybe now that everyone has a unique ID, it might be possible for the devs to use some sort of lightweight encryption to bind a skin to a username ? something for S3 perhaps...
(Maybe charge for a skin protection service that includes encryption and the option to report someone who uploads a copy of your skin ?)

I guess that this would still be open to abuse by dedicated hackers, but at least it would stop casual skin borrowers or folks who don't realize that some players will blow their top and have a forum tantrum if another uses their skin.

Hamilton for on track.
He had a bad start to the season, and sometimes it seems like most of the world is against him, yet he has not buckled under the pressure, he's focused himself and produced some dominant performances recently.

Alonso close second - he is an animal - if you compared boxers to F1 drivers, Alonso would be Tyson

Lots of different opinions on this old old topic

Personally, I believe that it will be possible to create a very convincing synthesized engine sound, however it will take development resources and a lot more cpu that the existing system.

My understanding of the current system is that the tiny 'impulse' samples are fed into a series of filters that make up a VERY simplified physical model of the engine and exhaust system.

For the sound to improve, lots of things can be tweaked, but there are IMO two areas that will provide the most significant improvements:

1. Use more complex filer types... this is where I believe we are losing the raw 'alive' sound...
The best example I can think of is the difference between a clarinet and a saxophone.... clarinet is a smooth sound that doesn't vary a whole lot, like most woodwind... sax on the other hand can produce a huge range of timbres and can be extremely wild compared to a clarinet, and there is a very good reason why: a clarinet is a tube with the same diameter all the way down, with a bell on the end, a sax is a cone. This causes the vibrations of the sax to exhibit much more chaotic behaviour, and as a result it is much more responsive to changes in input(what the player does).
It is relatively simple to model a tube like a clarinet, and uses very little cpu. It is comparatively very difficult to model vibrations of the air column in a cone, and uses much more cpu.
IMO if a real engine is like a saxophone, LFS is like a clarinet. (no, I'm not saying a real engine is a cone - its a metaphor )
If LFS had more advanced filter models that could simulate changes in bore in the different engine and exhaust components, the sound would be MUCH more 'alive' and 'raw'.

2. Model more individual components and connect them in a more 'authentic' way... this means more filters which in turn means more cpu.

An example of this from physical modelling synthesis for music would be a basic flute model.
It's pretty simple to create a simple flute that plays just one note (at least simpler than pretty much everything else 'cept maybe a plucked string).
To get different notes, there's a very easy trick - just change the length of the modelled tube. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound quite right. A much more convincing way to do it is to model each of the finger holes. BUT or course, this is way more difficult - each one has to be modelled as a filter, and divides the tube into two parts, so suddenly, instead of one simple modelled tube, you've go a whole bag of tubes and a load of complicated filters.

I reckon it is the same deal with the engine - if LFSs car sound system had more components with more complex filter types that could model the chaotic vibrations of complex shaped resonating columns of gas... with filters to conect these components in a more realistic way, combined with a way of varying the pressure within each component (to deal with the varying engine loads?), then I believe that it would be a whole lot more convincing.

Of course, even with all this, it would be a hugely simplified model of whats really happening, but I reckon is would still seem a lot more 'realistic'.

I also believe that Scawen knows this stuff (it's certainly been mentioned here on the forum at least once), but many other things currently take priority development wise.

Exactly as I thought, you have no evidence!

Sure, there are problems with the way money is handed out at the local level, but that has little to do with party politics, and whatever system you choose, there will be problems and inefficiencies. Highlighting individual symptoms of this that have always existed doesn't prove anything, it's just sidestepping the real issue - there isn't anything like enough money to fully support all the services I listed - each and every one if asked would likely be able to provide valid reasons why they need at least two or three times what they get now - remember we are talking multi-billions not a few ten grand road signs.

Quote from Storm_Cloud :It wasn't unfortunate, it was dumb. He also said "If I ruined Kimi's race then I apologise"

If?

That 'if' maybe bigger than you realise....

When they got out of the cars after Lewis shunted Kimi at the lights, and Kimi made a gesture towards Lewis, he didn't seem as angry as I would have expected - more like he was taking the piss... that made me think that Kimi was actually not that upset at the outcome. Before Hamiltons screw up he was looking good to increase his lead over Kimi. For this reason, maybe Kimi was relaxed enough about it to just be having a laugh at Lewises noobness... for once Hamiltons Maclaren had the advantage over the Ferraris, and he threw it away like a proper noob.
If the season ends with Kimi winning again beating Hamilton by a point, then this particular 'IF' gets really BIG

(Of course, Kimi was probably less 'philosophical' about the incident when Kubica took the win and the lead in the championship...)

This thread is getting so dull... time to pick on some totally irrelevant aside and rant on it

Quote from Ball Bearing Turbo :
Heh it's more about attitudes than words anyway I think, afterall words communicate ideas and therefore the words themselves are somewhat moot; being rather a means to an end. IMO of course.

Words are anything but moot - they are not some hollow vessel that just holds ideas and passes them. They are fundamental building blocks of ideas.
Ideas are made of words.

This is why most people have very few memories from before they learned to talk. The brain is kinda reprogrammed at that age, and we start to think in words. Only memories of extremely significant events survive that process.

We use words to classify our experience and structure our thoughts, and one of the results of this are our ideas.

This is one reason why the disappearance of so many languages in the world is so sad - each language is also a different way of thinking about existence!

Quote from Alias Driver :@Tristan - The inside is never an escape option at that chicane and Kimi made no effort at any point to go for the outside. I've just watched it over and over again and I still think he's going for the soft spot.

Thats exactly the problem (the highlighted bit).

When you FIRST saw the accident - the very first time, at normal speed, not slow-mo - what were you thinking during it?
were you thinking about all these things you suggested, or was it more like
DURING: "ooh feck.."
JUST AFTER: "a crash.."
basically, that's about all you had time to think about before the whole thing was history... same for KIMI - just not time for anything else - the human brain CANNOT make the kind of conscious decisions you are talking about that quickly.
It's amazing that he managed to keep the car out of the wall to ensure that the accident was under some control, rather than the total lottery (both for him and for Sutil) that would have ensued if he had hit the wall.

As for all the stuff about no great drives being possible in modern F1 - what a load of nonsense. F1 has always been about the cars as much as the drivers. From the start, there have usually been one or two teams dominating at any particular time. That's never prevented 'great drives' in the past, and never will. You just gotta keep in mind that great drives are few and far between, so to expect them every few weeks is ridiculous, and to complain when they don't happen regularly is equally crazy.

I would hate a world where you can't tell a joke because it might offend someone.

Unfortunately, you live in a world where some people use exactly that argument to defend very offensive racist and xenophobic material - stuff that is used to try and spread an extreme political agenda to the more innocent and naive among us - think school children etc.
"Hey don't worry, it's just a joke" is no excuse, never has been, and never will be.

There is never a clear boundary between what is acceptable and what is not. One comedian may tackle the subject in a way that is really subverting the idea of racist humour, and having a laugh at societies need for 'political correctness' eg. Ricky Gervais... while another may be just a fat old bigot spreading thinly disguised National Front propaganda. unfortunately, for any humour to be funny, it has to be edgy, so it is difficult to make a set of rules that specify what is OK and what is not. And of course, even if its 'funny' it doesn't mean it's acceptable in a modern multi-cultural society.

Anyhow, IMO this forum just is not the right kind of arena to discuss this topic in a sensible way. It doesn't have the gravity required to deal with issues like this at a level where it is possible to give them the respect they deserve.
