Wow, this topic really took off while I was gone. Glad to see that it's going so well!
Virtual webcam

Does anyone know of a good and free virtual webcam for Mac OS? It should be able to export video of your desktop to a virtual webcam that most programs (i.e. Skype) would recognize as an actual webcam.
New Need for Speed -- Actually (choking) good?

Read the Wikipedia entry here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Need_for_speed_pro_street

Do you think that they're exaggerating, or do you think that Need for Speed will actually become a good simulation? Any speculation as to other things in the game?

With tons of real cars, amazing (near photo-realistic apparently) graphics, and probably a good storyline, this may turn out to be a good game. However, I would never leave LFS because of its great multiplayer.

Quote from XCNuse :Guess I've just never come across a newspaper that ever talks about games. The AJC (Atlanta Journal Constitution) just ..is I guess what you'd call an ordinary newspaper.

Yeah the SF Chronicle is pretty sweet. They do reviews of tech products, have a giant column full of blog posts, and even have two reporters embedded in the police force writing narratives.

Quote from rubberbrush :You have to remember that LFS is for people on the edge of the bell curve. To most people realistic just means it looks realistic.

Excellent point, although in that case, I don't understand why NFS was included in the list.

Quote from XCNuse :What the hell newspaper are you getting with games in it?

I don't know whether you're talking about the reviews or the game itself. The newspaper certainly doesn't give out free games, although they do review them quite often. (San Francisco Chronicle)

This is pitiful... (From an article in my newspaper today reviewing Forza Motorsport 2)

Quote :
...hyper-realistic franchises such as Forza, Project Gotham Racing, and NEED FOR SPEED.

Gahhhh! I nearly choked on my ham sandwich when I read that! Why don't people get that arcade games aren't designed to be realistic? Also, it certainly sucks that LFS isn't getting as much press over here in the states; it certainly deserves to be on that list.

Quote from XCNuse :I would go for atleast 1 gb of RAM, it will help you generally speaking for every use. Plus, 1 GB of ram although isn't all that much anymore, you can get it for fairly cheap.

Also, you can get some decent graphics cards for around $100 now.
All depends on how much money you are willing to spend.

Which one would directly influence the frame rate of my games? That's all I care about lol .
Performance question (thinking about upgrades)
BlackSheep720

I need to know whether I should invest in more RAM or a better video card

This is my current setup
Pentium 4 - 3.0 Ghz, 800 Mhz sidebus, with HT technology
128 MB NVidia GeForce 5200 - Overclocked by about 50 Mhz on each clock
512 MB RAM
80 GB hard drive

On this setup I get about 37 FPS in LFS (max graphics settings in-game)

Would my performance benifit more from, say, 512 MB more of RAM, or a new video card? Thanks.

The training levels align with the AI levels. thus, if you score "pro" in the training, you should race against "pro" AIs. There isn't an "ace" level for the AI, and thus there cannot be an "ace" level for training.

-1 because it sounds utterly UN-realistic. This would never happen in a real life endurance race. It's up to the pit crew and the driver to make any nessecary changes for the next driver.

Putting a speed limit on cars completely anally rapes the whole purpose of citydriving and clc servers! The whole point is to be able to break the law and try to run from the cops! That's the fun in it.

As for real racing (balancing as you call it), I just don't see the point. Putting a top speed limit on a car doesn't limit its acceleration, handling, etc.

You must have been really tired, high, and drunk (all at the same time) when you wrote this. I hate to bash your ideas but they're just really not that good.

Quote from Jonas8431 :+1 for sug1

I have another suggestion, set a numbers of pit stop (1 or 2).

You have to do that yourself silly. Whadya think it's gonna be automatic?

Quote from scania :Ithik that more easy to control pit stop is more inportant than more control with the pit stop

WTF are you talking about? LOL

Quote from icyocean :but i don't know about the pit stop false start thing. irl can you move the car either if ppl are working on it? anyway i doubt it'd add anything to the racing.

Of course you can move the car. But I'm saying that we shouldn't be revving our engines in 1st gear (without clutch) near to the end of a pit stop.

Use your common sense. Think like this:

Weather packs - a major idea >>> People like to suggest major ideas >>> Maybe I won't suggest it because it's already been done

Or

Weather packs - a major idea >>> Hmm Scawen has probably already thought of this >>> I won't suggest it because he probably already knows about it

That's what I do lol
Pit stops (two suggestions)
BlackSheep720

Suggestion 1: Ability to terminate pit stop early if needed. The termination would take about 5 seconds so the "crew" could pull away.

Suggestion 2: Pit stop "false starts" (didn't know how to phrase it) - Here's the deal: when you pit, even if you're in active gear (not neutral), you can't move! It's like the transmission gets disconnected from the wheels! I think you should have to hold the clutch or go into neutral to remain stationary if you're revving your engine. If you're in active gear and apply throttle, the car will move and the pit stop will be terminated.

Who's with me? Eh?

If you have an up-and-running, official clan with more than 15 members or so, you could have it added to the sub-forum in the teams and leagues section. I'd pm one of the mods and ask them for one. You get to be the mod, have control of the forum, etc, etc. It's basically your own forum.

LFS is a realism simulator. Asking for this is like asking for the Batmobile or for a jet-powered UF1 ! It's just a waste of space and time, as are many things in this world. (I just wasted a minute on this response )
Shadow bug

This happens on pretty much all the tracks. If you're inside the pit garage and go into aerial view, you can see your car's shadow on top of the garage roof. Strange, eh? Sorry if this has been posted already.
Limiter bug (or is it?)
BlackSheep720

I noticed that the limiter doesn't function if you turn it on while not on the track. For instance, if I'm in the sand and turn on the limiter, it doesn't do anything (it just let's the wheels spin). Is this a bug, or is it supposed to do this?
Computer ovearheating (understatement)
BlackSheep720

Here's the deal. It's getting to be summer here in the U.S, and temperatures are in the mid to high 80's as of now. My computer is starting to sound like some kind of a vacuum cleaner (it's that loud). When I'm playing games (LFS, of course), it gets so hot that it starts to heat up the room that it's in. My computer's a 2004 Dell, 3.0 ghz Pentium 4 w/ HT, 128 Mb NVidia card, 512 Mb RAM, and an 80 Gb hard drive. I certainly can't afford to upgrade anything in it, so what can I do with what's there, or stuff that's lying around the house. As of now all I can think of is to lay ice packs around it . What can I do to improve its heat problem?

RallycrossExtreme Server
BlackSheep720
S2 licensed
If enough people are interested, I could open a RallycrossExtreme server (layout can be viewed and downloadedhere http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=23818). The layout basically adds ramps to all the jumps at Blackwood Rallycross. Details below:

Laps per race: 2-3 lap races (no pitstop needed); also there will be occasional 4-6 lap races (pitstop will definitely be needed)

Cars: XFG, XRG, XRT, RB4

Regulations: Excessive contact is not permissible; Going around jumps is not permissible; Continuing the race with a severely damaged car, in a manner that may endanger other racers, is not permissible.

If anyone is interested, please reply; I don't want to bother with this if no-one wants to participate

Times will be chosen later, as I am unsure of my schedule this weekend.
