Quote from Toddshooter :I don't know for sure...all I know is my wheel only turns 180 from lock to lock. By lowering the degrees, I have felt the steering be more precis, I don't know why it just is for me.

Maybe someone with more knowledge can tell me if I'm full of shit or not.

That is normal. A big GTR style car might only run with 15deg at the wheels while having 540deg steering lock. It is normally forced on them by the car geometry and what they can get away with in the wheel arch.

What it means is you are turning the wheel more to get the same effect so it feels less snappy. 360deg steering lock with 15deg on the wheels is the same as 720deg with 30deg on the wheels feel wise, you just cant get the same extreme to catch when out of shape.

Quote from lerts :"Actually GTR2, Race and EVERY sim based on the ISI engine is wrong when it comes to understeer. Steering does not go light IRL like ISI try to make you believe "

so gtr2 race07 and rfactor wheel goes light when front wheels skid because they belong to isi?

well i just tested toca3 and wheel goes light with front wheels skidding

so i understand all main simulators in the market, this last 4 want to make us believe something false except lfs

wow thats exactly what happens to me the whole world is crazy but me

All ISI sims try to work out what state the car is in then merge a selection of FF effects to create what they think you should be feeling through the steering wheel. It is well known that ISI sims are VERY VERY overdone in an understeer situation. Just look on RSC, there are loads of thread where people put forward their own setting on how the effects are mixed to make it feel more natural.

BTW: The Toca games physics are more arcade than real so ignore what that or any other "game" tell you with FFB.

The sims you should be looking at for correct behaviour (Or more realistic behaviour) are LFS, NK, NKP and RBR. All of these sims work out the forces that are acting on the front wheels and transmit those up the steering column. They are all driven off the physics engine directly and not through an effects calculator.

IRL most of the time the steering never goes light like in ISI and the other games you talk about. They give the light steer effect because you are missing the feeling of G (seat of the pants feel) that tells you when you are in understeer etc. It is an aid BUT it is WRONG.

I can't see you age from your profile but if you are old enough to drive take your car to an EMPTY large parking lot and try for yourself.

What happens is that as you add steering lock you feel pressure build and then as you start to understeer the pressure will stop rising BUT not drop unless you get really out of shape. This can be felt as a drop to some people because your brain expects the forces to keep rising but they just level.

Some conditions like wet tarmac etc will effect the feel and if you have a FWD car and push too much power through the wheels they will get lighter if you spin them by putting too much power through them.

What you feel through the steering IRL is very setup, situation and weather conditions dependent along with if your cars power steering etc mask the subtle feelings etc. In the end of the day, most of the feel while driving comes through your body via G force, the steering does not give as much info as some people believe. The FF in LFS is not as bad as you think, you are just getting body feel and steering feel confused

This is why the real-feel plugin was created for ISI sims, the original FF is so poor its just a joke.

Quote from Gentlefoot :That's not strictly true.

Those of us who compete in longer races know that R2s can be just as fast as R1s when they have done 20 odd laps and they start to wear thin and cool. And the last few laps before they pop, say after an hours worth of running, they generate huge amounts of grip and very little scrub.

Road tyres behave in a similar way after they begin to wear thin.

Ofcourse this only works if you have run aggressive pressures that meant the tyres got very hot between say 5 and 10 laps. This means they don't get too cold when they wear thin.

Just to illustrate, I have set some of my PBs on R2s in the FOX after 30 odd laps. You just have to get through that hot stage the tyres go through in their lifecycle.

So as I said and you have confirmed, it is impossible to run WR pace every lap for a long race. Your either have to run soft tyres and suffer the heat or run harder tyres and wait for them to come good and wear down.

How far is your PB you set off the related WR btw?

Most WR laps from what I know are a one shot attempt with a set done to exploit the most gains with no reguard for the mechanical sympathy of the car. If you tried to drive like that for a 50 lap race you would be in the pits every few laps or in the wall. Racing is about your overall time not lap times. Do you run slower to minimise pit time or push hoping the gains made on the track counteract the time in the pits etc.

Quote from lerts :i dont like this:

force beedback doesnt tell you when your front wheels are skidding

gtr2 and race 07 tell when your front wheels skid with ff becomes soft

it cant be these 2 games are wrong and lfs right

in fact im saving to buy one of this games instead of lfs but i hope in a future patch this get fixed which would bring me back

Actually GTR2, Race and EVERY sim based on the ISI engine is wrong when it comes to understeer. Steering does not go light IRL like ISI try to make you believe

Quote from frokki :But on the other hand, If I'm going to play LFS for 45 minutes before I go to sleep, it's a good thing that I can join mid-race, find my pace and setup and finish the race, so I don't need to fist wait for the race to end, start the next one at the back of the grid and spend the time learning the combo and taking notes where my setup ain't bad.

But then you have played LFS long enough that all that should be sorted already?

If you need to learn a combo I would say joining in the middle of a live race where you could off someone is NOT the place to do it.

Quote from scoobyrbac :Its GTR2 that has it and on my PC I dont see how you think it lags at all? Unless you have a crappy slow PC with slow internet which makes it lag?

Here we go again *sigh*

When people say the animation lags they DO NOT MEAN it has ANYTHING to do with internet connections or how fast your PC is. But for info the animations will lag even if you had a 10000000Ghz CPU with a GFX card that could raytrace in realtime.

Here is what people mean.... You reach for your gearstick and then start to shift. This is the first point where the game knows you are shifting so it then triggers the gear change animation so now you see the in game drivers arm move to the stick and change gear as you move your arm back to the wheel.

This is what people mean when they say lag, so AFTER you have changed gear you then watch the driver change gear.

MODS: PLEASE join this into the huge thread we had on this a little while back, it will save all this crap again.

Just disable the ability to mid race join, far better. Fun servers can allow and more serious disable.

People who join midrace are not up to pace, have cold tires and have no effect on the outcome. They should not be allowed to even join IMHO.

Quote from ddd9022 :But maybe that "bad guy" uses some password stealing software, then blocking account woud be good idea. IMO.

I doubt it. The password would only be transmitted between the client and LFS Master server so unless the "friend" has installed a keyboard logger or similar then this is a cover story for "I acted like a dick and now don't want to be banned anymore. Please help."

It is Impossible two people to be online with the same account BTW so should be easy to see if using your account or just have same number plate.

Quote from lerts :so far ive been driving with forces on and tryed to keep front wheels on green but i took a look at wr and he enters every corner with the front wheels on red

so how do i know how much steering should i imput?

Ignore wr laps they are not race pace, think of them as qualify sessions. You go out, put in the lap and come back into change your tyres. It is impossible to maintain WR pace in race longer than a few laps, the tyres would not take it.

There are many industries that will need to reinvent themselves soon. The music industry is learning the hard way but the film and software industries will go through the same real soon. I write software for a living and have sold software in the past but can see the days of selling software are all but gone. The trouble being that in the digital domain reproduction costs are zero and distribution is so near zero you treat as zero. Software sales are further effected by the FOSS movement, chances are a free version of anything you can think of are out there.

The only reason the console market is not so effected yet is their tight control and DRM systems they have in place. Trouble is all DRM falls as consoles as mod chips show. It was also that XBox HD DVD drive that broke the DRM on HDDVD and BlueRay

I can't see the answer. People like Trent Reznor of NIN are looking for answers and worth keeping an eye on even if you do not like his music. He is not scared to try new options, even giving away music free.

When you look back to Napster you see how stupid the record industry was, it was the perfect solution for them but they crushed it and with it control over music in the internet age.

At the time the ONLY place to go for music was Napster. It was centralised and so could produce an accurate log of download counts. Before the industry crushed Napster the heads of the 4 majors met with Napster to work a deal. On the lines of $5-$10/month and all music free. They would be able to count downloads on a per user basis and so do a fair distribute of royalties. They would also control over distribution, the decentralised p2p network would probably not have gained ground as the legal offering would have been attractive enough.

DivX and fat pipes have now made movies easy to shunt around now, hence the need for Hi-Def film. It is all about moving distribution costs away from zero so they can charge for product.

The trouble the record industry can't ever get back to Napster, those days are long gone so they have a hard sell and a generation where music=free.

Quote from spanks :thanks for the tip about DXTweak...I've heard about it a few times and finally tried it

I can actually take off from a stop like I would in a real car now :P

Before the bite point was like less than a cm it seemed. Now I actually have some modulation

Yep, makes a huge difference, lets your foot operate in more natural way

Quote from lerts :i had my concerns since i had played race07 and it was so different to lfs, both simulation of reality but theres just one reality, both sims should be the same

but now i have a clutch driving reminds me of my bike times, its so similar

great sim

A tip to improve more. If your current clutch operates over full travel you should get DXTweak and adjust so its only over 1/3 of the travel nearer the top, more like a real clutch.

Helps with miss shifts etc

-1 but then I would like all other temp and related displays DISABLED while in a race. If the car does not have the display on the dash you should not see it.

You CAN hear if you have engine damage BTW.

I have to point something out here. I surf with an add blocker because while there are responsible advertisers it is NOT the norm.

I am sure CTRA and the like will be responsible but this is not always the case. This system needs to be controlled from client side or blockers will be made, not like the forum is short of people involved in writing software lol.

I do hope that those who want to be able to force adverts don't want advert protection and excrytion systems (call it DRM) added to LFS to make sure the adverts are seen?

Quote from mcintyrej :Wrong. If you did a bit of market research you'd find that Nvidia are far more popular than ATI, they sell far more cards and many belive Nvidia to be far more advanced.

Very serious gamers still use CRT monitors, to get the perfect response time.

I use a 21" crt for games. The trouble with LCD is unless you are at native rez it is just blur city. A good CRT is just a better picture.

Shame my Lappy has ATI solution otherwise would have ordered.

I have been playing Trackmania in Anaglyph mode recently (Red/Blue specs 3d) and it works well.

<sarcasm>Please please add DRM to LFS to protect skins and layouts. It worked so well for music, games and video. Everyone is always happy with DRM because it helps protect us the user and never causes problems.</sarcasm>

No DRM system has actually ever worked. Even the two layer shite that makes Blueray so slow in operation has been fully broken and the disks can be copied. If the likes of Sony and Microsoft can't make DRM work with the huge deep pockets and resources they have does ANYONE here believe the LFS devs have the time and money to make it work for pointless stuff like skins and layouts.

NO to more DRM in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LFS World should show the account name but optionally the last used playername in brackets if different to player name.

So for me

This would stop confusion etc.

Why not accept that the versions of cars we have represent the cars released on that year. They are still all (RAC, MRT, BF1) good cars.

Are the people that are asking for the update asking that the old versions are removed if so it is a pointless update. All the LFS world for those cars will be removed etc.

The cars are what they are so accept it. They are no less fun because they are older. By all means ask for extra cars not replacements. But then if you are asking for new I would prefer DIFFERENT cars which feel different, not the same old with body and performance tweaks and nothing else. That is just a waste of dev time.

But then when it costs $0.00 who cares

Quote from BullHorn :I was taking the idea from a half-life mod (The Specialists). The community consisted of many talented 3d artists so most of the models were much better than the default.

The thing with the "big" mod teams in the FPS domain in that most have been going for MANY years and know what it takes to put out a good quality mod that performs well etc. How to handle aplha and beta releases etc.

What you are ignoring is the 1000s of maps and models that muppets release that are pure crap. The community is big enough that you dont see most of the mod noise. BY the time it hits real servers it has been filtered.

LFS community is a FRACTION of the size. HL & HL combined pull in over 100000 players at peak times of the day and almost as must at any other.

Look at rF if you want to see the effect of mods on a comunity the size of the sim racing community

Quote from Gekkibi :As far as I know, this is not the case.

This topic has been thrashed to hell so many times. There are just so many problems with it from morons using 50000 poly for one car through to 6 poly cheat cars as already pointed out.

It just serves no purpose at all allowing this and as the OP only asked for new mesh on existing cars it will only make LFS rice city.

When modding comes then the community needs to work out something to stop the utter stupidity that occurs in rTractor with mods. From people releasing a mod as final when alpha then releasing 50 updates in one week through to models that only work on certain machines well etc.

MODS: Can we close this thread and merge with one of the many others on the same subject.
