That's a great one, reason

I love the Dune-series by F.Herman, Lord of The rings and all the Stephen King stuff (especially the dark tower series). Oh, and maybe not the best literature, but keeps you hooked: All the stories about Drizzt do'Urden and some other RPG related books (Vampire Clan Novels e.g.).

Quote from Tweaker :@Vykos: Even if handbrake uses the rear (because I am pretty sure it doesn't use the front on most cars), I say again, I am trying to save my front brakes from damage, I apply my handbrake (not fully), and apply light pressure to foot pedal. It's a whole lot better than plainly using the foot pedal to slow down, it was metal on metal at that point for the FRONTS. And I'm not cranked fully on the handbrake, I never was. And actually using the front brake would take a while to slow down, so the handbrake helped. The rears are the only thing that can help me stop, so why not?

I think your avatar is right illepall

using the handbrake destabilizes the car completely. It's like shifting the brakebias to rear, which will cause you in some situation to loose the car. It's a stupid thing. Use your auto-gear stick to choose a lower gear....

Quote from Scawen :
Here is where we differ. You think I should do everything now, get S2 finished as quickly as possible. Also I should not even eat, sleep, have a bath, watch TV or go shopping I suppose?

Wrong, I said, some of your priorities seem wrong.
e.g.:Vista-compatibility is imho something doable after S2 is finished. It's something for an OS, which isnt yet on the market and is postponed to 2007 anyway. Why dont you do CPU Multicore-support then too?

Quote :LFS is about Eric and me leaving Lionhead to make the product we wanted to. LFS is the result. And it WORKS! If you like it, use it. If you don't like it, try something else. if you want it to get better, then WAIT. It always gets better.

I know that, and I enjoy every step of LFS getting better, but maybe I love LFS too much, that I often want it to become bigger and greater, than maybe doable. Maybe some of my dreams of LFS future are doable with some other priorities in your way of coding, maybe not. Maybe that's why I am that harsh. Maybe I want LFS to be finished one day, and I see that atm LFS doesnt gain enough new players, due to the lack of being an S2 full version etc. etc.

Quote :If there's ONE thing we have proved, it's that our development system works very well and LFS gets better every year. And we do that by working the way we want to work, and being happy (being thankful for the thanks and appreciation that we get, and not letting the frequent attacks get us down). It's not about giving up all that is fun, and putting our nose to the grindstone and acting as Vykos and Kidcodea's slaves that they bought for £24. It's about following our inspiration including ideas from the community and REAL LIFE, and getting it done. There is no time limit. There's no reason to think we are about to fall over and die, and neither are you.

well, why then sell it anyway? Hard word, i know, but you do that for a living, and if there arent new customers, there is no living....

Quote :Every year it taken is another year too many. But guess what, things take time. And a lot of people enjoy the journey.

as said already, i enjoy that journes too, maybe sometimes too much

Quote :If you and Kid know so much better (as you claim) how to make a racing simulator, then why the **** don't you get off your arse and make your own one?

This sentence just tells me, that I hit something right there. You should know, that not everyone with your skills gets a nice goodbye-money from former boss to be able to live up to three years from it. I for myself simply DONT have the skills and the money to do, what you did. And I admire you for this. Still, I'm not saying, I know how to code that sim, but I have some insight into the gaming market and how it delivers and therefor I think I can allow myself some opinion on it.

And now dont reply and get back to coding, cause else I have to cut your TV-time

just take FZR, put 100% fuel in and drive an hour. You'll notice in times and behaviour. Because the fuel-tank sits exactly on the front axle of it, the weight-distribution changes a lot, and work on the ARBs has been done to keep the car in stable condition,.

Scawen, I understand your point of view, but I sign Kids post all in all. How much days did that additional features etc. cost you? I know, you'd reply they didnt cost days, cause needed to be done, but honestly: It's nothing you had in mind, when thinking of what should be in S2... So imho it's lost days. While you're talking about people using the game, new customers etc. there is YOUR vital point: If LFS doesnt progress in some of the bigger issues (sound, gfx, online-code/collision detection,...), you will NOT gain any newer customers and will have to shut LFS down and call Mr Molyneux for a new job. If you start talking about customers, then take those effects into your mind: MP replays are not a pleasure to watch from the cockpit, due to - hardcore - stuttering wheel positions, no damage applied to aeromodel @ crashes causes questions of probably new customers ("eh, why this formula car still goes 300 with crashed wing??"). Those people DONT care about the options, it's NOT a VITAL thing to have bling bling in menus, as almost every really succesful game on the market showed, or does quake or counterstrike has good options and menus? And people dont use the "console" where they hack their commands in?
Counterstrike, to stay with the example of a succesful Online-only game, isnt succesful because of the "great" menu or the easy way to use it/set it up. It's because of the gameplay, the possibilities to watch other games online, and the easy way to get into an online game on the server.

I know, you dont like it, if people tell you, on what you should priorise, but I had to put my thoughts done. Get that damn V-Patch out and then finish S2, it's about time...

First of all: It's clearly the dads mistake. something comparable happened to me, when I was 8 or 9 and should close the electric roof, and I turned the key too far and a gear was in. So car made a jump, my dad looked shocked but nothing bad happened.

To the other Q: Auto or Manual? IMHO everyone should learn driving on a manual transmission. Once learned you will never again loose it. I drove both a lot, and manual is just greater outside town, on autobahn or land-road, cause you can sit in a gear a high RPMs to use engine brake, or on long downhill runs etc. Auto-gears are clearly way more better in high traffic areas. traffic jam with auto is just way more relaxing than with manu. Oh, and starting hill upward is easier too with auto, while left foot braking is doable with both :P

Oh Tweak: handbrake uses same brakes as footie... doesnt help at all

Quote from danowat :Why?, because there are fundamental flaws, like the starting system, that IMO let the whole realism of the sim down.

And it's just the general high horse attitude of a certain sect of LFS users that I find annoying.

Dan,

[_] you have understood that LFS is WiP, and that the physics system will be more and more complete with every new patch.

Why are the starts arcadey? Cause it was easier to code and you have something to play.
Why is there no brake fade? Cause it isnt implemented yet, but will be.
And so on and so on. If you take the stuff, which is already implemented fully, then it is the most realistic you can get in sims nowadays.

that is the way LFS works and will work for quite a long time. It's not a game like GTR or similar, which has to be kind of complete but without "real" physics below, to make it sellable. Be happy to have what you have right now in LFS and be happy that you know, that LFS will get all the other stuff done right, that you want.

I - for myself - dont get the difficulty in understanding this...

Quote from TagForce :Mods will always get complaints, whatever they do...
There was a time we didn't see mods for a while, and there were complaints nothing was being done. Now that that's changed, they get complaints too much is deleted.

The mods run this show for the most part. If you don't like what they did, go to the feedback section of the forum (which isn't here, so PM the mod)...
Don't waste valuable forum space with completely off-topic complaints.

sure they get complaints. You wonder? And if they get complaints about too much deletion, then they should think about that. There was seriously no reason to delete anything in here. People got ok with it, replied to posts they wanted etc. Now you have the mess, cause here are people that complain. So who made the mistake here?

IMHO there are only a few things, a mod should delete: Links to pron, offensive material as racist shit, spam from forum spammers and advertisement stuff. Nothing of that was in this thread here...

sometimes I wonder if mods just feel the need to do anything. The moment a mod comes to the spotlight, other people complaining about their moved/edited/deleted threads, he did something wrong imho.

Quote from martine_wedlake :Pardon me if I hijack the thread for a little bit, but I don't really agree with the above; especially the part that "with some physics understanding, you'll see, that the momentup put on the cars then is quite big."

Seems to me that all this applies only when you have inelastic collisions... then the energy represented by the overlap goes directly into reactive force (generating large momentum). But, cars are not inelastic -- they crumple -- thus a vast portion of that energy should really dissapate into the bodywork, suspension, etc and only a little bit go into the reactive force.

Even though LFS does not today have a fully implemented damage model, seems like it could at least pull out that part of the energy and apply only a small portion of the remaining energy toward the change in momentum. Of course, until you have a complete damage model, you'll need to estimate the dissapated energy instead of calculate it... but you get the idea.

well, as said way up in that thread, the momentum is calculated for some kind of inelastic collision. It's easier to calculate, simple thing.

BTT: It's not a LFS related BUG, it's an Online Racing Game bug, where collisions take part. There is actually NO way to totally prevend that, except allowing the cars to dive into each other a bit. Every Racing Sim has that, that in a short LAG and both cars heading towards same position, they might appear to be inside the other car then. And a proper physics calculation of collisions will then reverb the force, which would be realistically needed to "dive" that much into the other car onto both cars in the reversed direction. With some physics understanding, you'll see, that the momentum put on the cars then is quite big. That'll leap them anywhere. This happened to me in every other sim too once or twice. It's just a matter of LAG.
