Quote from Shadowww :Well Google installs all it's progs (e.g. Earth, Chrome, Picasa etc) there. + All Microsoft .NET ClickOnce-technology installed apps are going there too.

Really? Thats quite interesting. But I dont quite understand the reason behind this yet. Or is that indeed the only (or best) way to install software only for certain users?

I thought the AppData folder is used for data that is used like temp files, but which should not be deleted... like user specific plugins or chat histories or config files etc. At least it is not a path where programs are installed, so this should not be done imo.
Btw, there is a special games folder/tool in Vista an Win7. I dont use it, so if anyone knows how to add a program to that, this might be helpful. (I hope its not required that a game must be certified as a "Games for Windows" title to make this work)

But generall,y software is supposed to be installed to the Program Files or Program Files (x86) directory.

And because this sucks, I install all software only to D:\Programs

Quote from Victor :I am curious though, do you know if many people are used to using their Users folder? (because I'm not (and I'm not the only one))

I agree, i dont use those windows default folders at all, actually i have never really used any folders on C except for the desktop
And in Win7 the first thing i did was sending the library feature to hell... just nonsense if you ask me, because it is not capable of dealing with a real amount of data. Like 20 svn repositories with 40k files and 5GB each. I guess those default data management suggestions are for home users who have a few hundred pictures, not a couple TBs of version controlled data and backups etc.

Im still waiting for the 'Windows for power users and developers' edition...
lfs icons update

I have updated the icons for vic's lfs installer test, which adds the lfs related file extensions to windows automatically. Therefore, large 48px icons are now included as well. Note that the icons are multires versions - windows will use the correct version automatically. If you want to access the differently sized icons manually, there is a simple ico plugin for photoshop which does exactly this.
The credit for the script icon goes to CrazyICE.

yeah
but generally there is still the problem that not all user generated content will be nice to use... its maybe even worse like the skins, where like 90% is not really looking good...

The fact that they are already going for S3 and that the VWS comes for S1 sounds like a new business model to me:
They are no longer using actual stages following each other, but rather independent licenses that receive continuous updates, whereas the latest stage of course gets the most new things.
This is quite interesting cause it reminds me a bit of the free to play system that is very large and successful here in Germany, where you can play the game for free, but to get the real cool items you must play a small amout of money, like 1€ for a sword.
So maybe they are going to try something similar in LFS, just merged into packages. The first actual stage approach was similar, but now the good thing is that they add new stuff also to old licenses, making them attractive as well.

And for S3 it seems to be a business model of partitioned releases, so more like: you get the first track now, but you already pay for everything. And later there will be more tracks, etc!
Personally, I would directly switch to a new system and sell the track on its own, and continue this with S3 cars and more tracks in the future. Simply because otherwise its a bit of a problem because the user does not know how much he gets when buying the game. When S1 was about to be released, we clearly knew how many tracks and cars it would include, and now with S3 we dont really know anything! Not the best thing for the customer, unless you know the devs and you are sure that they will continue their job and release some nice content in the upcoming years.
Selling content on its own also makes it easier to add user generated content, where the creator would for example get a part of the money. But UGC is really far away, so lets not talk about that yet

about the lfs files screen - i dont really know if its the only screen, but a while ago I searched my ass off in google for like half a day until I realized I had this screen somewhere
Im sure Tweak or XCNuse will also have some screens, or even the oriainal PSD's of the design

Even though I dont really want to be part of this discussion, Im kinda forced to push it a bit into the direction of common sense:
Do you really think the devs will ever post a progress report again, if you moan and even make fun of them if they dont deliver? So, what most people here want is progress reports - I remember a lot of threads where many people requested some kind of regular updates. But with the current behaviour you simply achieve the 100% opposite. Why should Scawen risk more of those flame wars again? Just to keep you guys informed?
You prolly have not a single lick of a clue how game development works; Sometimes its just the way it is - you cant really plan anything perfectly and release something onto the point. Sometimes there are tiny little problems that make you go through hell for many weeks! At least thats the case if you want to do something cool. Games that are produced within the budget and are released in time are coming from EA nowadays. Would you like LFS to be an EA game?

So baisically what you all achieve by those threads is, that there will no longer be progress reports in the future; New content will just be released when its done, and thats it. Thus LFS will be just like any other game. Development for a couple of years, and then one release...
Everyone who knows what LFS is about should now realize that this is not the way that will take LFS ahead. And if you request that the devs should take more care of the community, you forget about the fact that while doing so, they cant work on LFS.

Also, I guess nobody has asked the devs "What are you doing right now". I'd be surprised if they didnt answer. At least its the more elegant approach than just assuming, if you dont see anything new, there is nothing new. Its a bit like "what I cant see is not there" approach, which I first discovered in the kindergarten, where some girls thought they would be hidden if they closed their eyes..

Besides all of this theory stuff, nobody seems to remember that the devs are doing this game project because they are having fun with it. Having fun doing it their way. And all you guys do is talk about them as if they were complete idiots who dont work at all. I mean, if I was Eric I would have been pissed of even more than I think he was. Just try to imagine if someone calls you an idiot, and that everyone can do at least twice as fast. Besides the fact that you dont know if you really can, you have no clue what they are actually doing. So, how shall you know if you can do faster or better if you dont really know what they are actually doing? And even IF you can do faster, you will not be faster after 5 years or more of development. You really need a few weeks off sometimes, if you have been working on the same thing for a long time. Simply to get your head sorted again and relax a bit... think about something else, do something else. You cant "produce" creativity like a bot.
Not even Scawen can, and he is a bot... HAHAHA just kidding

Anyways. From my point of view, people in here dont realize that the devs are still human. Yes, there have been little updates to LFS for a very long time now, but this doesnt mean its dead. People are still playing and buying the game. Only those that are in LFS for some more time start to moan because not much is going on. But its pretty normal, that you dont have fun playing the same game again and again over many years. It needs bigger changes at once in order to keep the fun. If there are only small updates for many years, you will soon miss the thrill of getting someting new, something different with a new feel and new excitement.
Thus releasing the new Scirocco will likely not change anything. Many people will not like it anyways as its FWD, and I promise, the ones who will be crying the loudest then, are also the ones that are moaning the loudest right now.

I really hope the devs have some sort of an ace up their sleeve, or anything that can provide the feel of something new. A new car will not be enough for sure, but a new track and some cool physics updates alongside with a more grown up overall look and feel can do the trick... Just like the first demo from S2Alpha with the new Blackwood - a totally new feel, which brought a lot of excitement!
Also, Im sure the devs dont mind if you play other games than LFS. The next LFS update will come before Duke Nukem Forever (hahahah!!) and once its there, EVERYONE, who has been moaning right now, will go back to LFS and play and love it again...

Maybe it is even BETTER that there is not much going on right now. I guess people will be disappointed if the devs release a rather small update soon. Its all a bit like a doom loop, cause everyone wants new content as soon as possible, but everyone will be disappointed if the update is not a completely new game...

Welcome to the most complicated branch of trades in the world...

when you recieve a global ban you must have really done bad things... this doesnt happen after you have been banned twice or so; it requires a lot bans.
whatsoever, this system is definetely needed to keeps things clean, so it wont be removed, no matter what the poll results are. thus this thread is useless...

nice idea,

but why not impementing a parser that can output the result like "LFS Points". That way, we can ensure that the parser will be compatible for updates

Currently, LFS Point can export xml and html

example: lfsworld con "Parse ur mpr", select the replay .... ratta ratta ...... Save as *.xml or *.html, done.

The result output can be adjusted to fit the layout and made available (on the league site).

That's how I wish to have it.

However, thats just an idea.

PS: http://sls.simracing.pl/ <----- LFS compatible !

PPS: we MUST NOT forget that modifiying the results must be available also after the race, for eample for protests

Why not just this possibility?: The admin of a league on LFSW could select the race from one of the race results from one of the drivers, and get the results form this page?

Cause the lap times are included there.

Like Jörg mentioned, we must not forget that penalties can change the result later, and the league admin must be given the ability to edit the result.

I have also written something on the original forum. I dont know if its important that vic knows in hat way this is implemented, and how we are getting the data from our various cms's into lfsworld. I would go the other way round: If there are for example handy editors present on lfsworld, so that the articles can be completely written there, then we lfsw only needs to provide the interface to export this. Then, the teams or leagues can fetch the standardized news and shot for example on their homepage. that way, the league-coders will do their impelemtation of this interface into their cms like he can do best.

I also noted some additional thoughts about a league system, but vic has written that its just about a news section for now. I would like to post a link about my thoughts for a league management system. we started with a brain storming in thi direction some time ago, but impementing such a software alone would be too time intensive:

Take a look at my link, there already is a completed php sql league sys

its free and can parse lfs replays (not tested)

my idea is based on standardizing the information from the race; with a possibility using lfsw.net, and update of the parser would be guaranteed.

imo it doesnt make sense to invent the wheel anew, the possibilities are already present (see imracing.pl and lfs points). Why not form a standard based on that? With the possibility of differnt exporting, its would be an easy task to fetch data from other leagues. So, use existing resources and keep the wheel round.

About simracing.pl: Im planning to use this for the GTR Evolution section.

Seen the link, but I still wanted to post my thoughts about this. I didnt know that there was already a good system around (I knew lfs points though), thus I will take a closer look at this soon. Im definetely not a "wheel-new-inventor" either

[BiA]Luder (Jörg Bauer)

As far as I understand this, its about feeding lfsnews

Then, the following might even be easier:

If you can "add" league admin in lfs, they should be given the ability to mark the race as league race (last race infortion). Those can surely be read form lfsw.net directly (instead of just details, also add an xml alongside)

This will then work for races that are already over. If you want to implement a way to mark the race before it actually takes place (maybe automatically according to the shedule), we need a function for thas aswell. (this will make selecting the racer afterwars unneccessary)

Victor will surely cope with the communication between lfsnews and lfsw already

Now there is still the question which leagues shall be included there? Will the names be displayed as real names or lfsnick? There are a lot details to consider if you want to make it nice.

PS: Exporting the races from the LFSW data into a new format will surely be the easiest way to begin with, cause then we dont even need o parse the replays.

If the involved leagues could be reached via an on url, that would be great. for example lfsworld.net/league

As you can see, my idea are coming one by one; because my english is not so great, Im explicitly writing this in Geran :P

Who likes can sum up my things and transpate into english, Im releasing my badly written texts to the public *gg*

ORION
Quote :
yeayea Im the one to translate all this later, just got no time right now

The idea of posting the news directly on lfsw in the first place seems to be pretty brillant to me. This would save vic a lot of time, and there will be a uniform standard, which wont stop working after an update from another league site.
Of course it must be ensured that league admins will actually post in lfsw at first.

some nice ideas around

[BiA]Luder (Jörg Bauer)
Quote :
Yes that's what its about: dont create dependence on user tools, which will usually not be implemented from all league sites at all, or just in older versions and thus (maybe) incompatible.

Surely, the goal has to be making this directly from within LFS, in the replay section. Provide not just the function to watch the replay, but also Export as..... But of, I dont want too much, the Program will ease a lot of work upon direct impmenentation. At least we have a time table in the replays

I'm wondering how many different forums or cms people actualy use. It would be great if people could develop some classes to implement for example xml output according to a specification we can define, and make those classes available for everyone using the same cms. This can save a lot time

Also, a league section in lfsw can give a lot possibilities to league admins to showcase their league and aquire new memers
So if you have ideas what features would be nice, post them. Maybe in a separate thread though, because this one is just for getting started and finding out about whats the best way to make a nice automatic news submission, or what way is the easiest.
