You have some good points there (was going to mention [RF]-art555 had it right too). However, I believe that (again easier to imagine if you go out and to this in real life) in racing you need to come down through every gear.

It is, of course, down to personal preference too but by coming down through each gear I find I am automatically in the correct gear for the speed I'm doing at the time and also it is a LOT easier to detect when the rears are locking up.

I've driven Caterhams quite often and it makes braking on the limit so much easier / slicker / smoother and less likely to lock the back end if you do use each gear in turn. It kinda keeps the wheels moving when they're just that close to locking.

It just might be worth including this advice (about a flash of a DOS screen and the icon on the EXE file etc) in a txt file zipped up along with it...?

It does now!! It *did not* have the correct icon. Thats bizarre.
Have applied it and the opening screen is different and it also shows the incremented version number.

Don't get that. Just a brief DOS box (like for 100ms!) and then it goes away.

Can't believe I have to ask this, but how do I install it?
I've moved the EXE file into the working LFS dir and ran it, I get a brief DOS screen but thats all...

Okay so I'm ready to upgrade my PC. New motherboard, cpu & ram. It might be an opportunity to put Vista on instead of XP. I've read some LFS-related posts about Vista and most (?) people have it working okay.

However I've still not used Vista at all - never trusted it. But I *do* fancy DX10.

So whats the opinion on Vista at the moment? (for general stuff, not just LFS)

After all that, all the time I put in within the game and shuffled real events around the race... I fell asleep! Race has been underway for 50 mins now, and I slept through the whole thing!!! FFS.

I've tried twice this morning to go the full race distance offline in order to see what happens to the tyres. However both times I ended up on my roof before 20 laps

I did find that the R4's go off after about half distance, the grip level drops off quite significantly. I think there's no choice (for me) but to change tyres at half distance in the pit stop, trying to look after them will help but will reduce pace by about 1 second per lap.

However this seems to be yet another race that I'll be pleased simply to finish rather than retire.

I'm even managing to turn R3's red. But R4's eventually cool down which is a problem. Which is the lesser of 2 evils??!

I agree with Blackbird in that dual monitors can be great - I'm a photographer and two monitors are brilliant.

However, directed at antttt69, two monitors in LFS is awful, the split is right in the middle. You need either one or three monitors. Two just won't do.

What average frame-rate are you getting at the moment?

You will definately benefit from more RAM. A good 2Gb is the minimum these days. If you upgrade this is without doubt the way to go.

Do you have a branded PC? They are usually filled to the gills with rubbish.

No its not just you, I can't H&T to save me on LFS, even though I can preach about it all day and demonstrate it in my car on the road and track.

On LFS it turns into random stabbing of pedals, usually sailing past the first corner into the barrier. This is even though its exactly the same theory and layout as a car. Go figure.

I've consigned the G25 gear lever to the loft, I prefer to use the paddles behind the wheel and my left foot is constantly covering the brake pedal.

As for your pedals on the same axis - go to the controller properties (under Control Panel > Game Controllers) and you'll see something along the lines of "Use combined axis", it is likely ticked.

It isn't a loose audio jack if your FPS drops.

This happens to me when a background process is working. NOD32 anti virus on my PC can update in the background and when it does I get about 5-10 seconds worth of stuttering.

If you've turned AV off then it must be something else. Try running MSCONFIG (not sure if this is in Vista but its a Godsend in XP) and trim down the unwanted stuff from the Startup tab. You'll be surprised at just how much crap is in there.

I'm curious about the arc of the pedals too - surely with the spacer mod your feet are at a different angle to your ankles ... it is still comfortable? I can imagine that you might get sore calves from holding your feet more upright?

One thing that bugs me about the brake is that there is far too much travel. For road cars its still too much, but for race cars the pedal hardly moves at all and you simply apply pressure to it.

I doubt its possible because the pedals use potentiometers and so rely on the movement to translate into the game - but has anyone done this kind of mod to G25 brake pedals?

@ Bullhorn and anyone else not sure of the advantage - get someone to demostrate this in a real car while you're a passenger (on the road is fine). 1) no heel & toe, 2) matched-rev changing (this hasn't been mentioned but is still a good technique), 3) full heel & toe. You will then appreciate how smooth it is.

I use H&T and left-foot braking all the time on the road as do many others on this thread. Aside from being kinder to the car (ie. ALL the components involved in transmission), its WAY cool braking down from top gear at speed all the way into 1st very smoothly using H&T. Impresses the hell out of your passengers too.

The only time I can't manage this is in a Caterham (or similar) where the pedal box is tight for space and my size 11 feet simply won't fit.

... oh, and here's a big *FAIL* to those with auto-boxes

@ Birder - I've probably been to a track day you have, I've done loads of Javelin and BaT days in various cars.

I tried rFactor over the weekend due to this very thread (I recently got a G25 and was interested in the thread). Risking turning this into an rFactor hijack, I initially thought it was pretty good because it has some tracks I've driven on. I like the sounds (brake squeal etc) and (ebmarassingly?) the dirty windscreen. It was a fun few hours but it just doesn't feel like LFS does.

Pool 5 - as Tim says it seemed that someone would overtake someone else and then there'd be a spinner. It took me until my first pitstop to get into it, I'd heated my tyres up in the first stint and it went downhill from there.

Never mind, I wanted simply to finish this race on 4 wheels instead of my roof. A 10th place finish was perfectly acceptable for me.

Its really good that the team behind this series are taking these things on board and doing something about them. The new server qualifying system and the new race-start feature is absolutely excellent and something every series should have.

Well done devs, your work is hugely appreciated.

[EDIT] Still found that hard to drive. Had to loosen the diff a little to get it stable for me.

I can put faster lap times in with the FZ5 but it destroys tyres as it is very heavy. Having said that, the RAC is simply dangerous to drive on the road
I don't think anyone will enjoy this combination. So difficult. Its just going to be a matter whits and reaching the chequered flag rather than proper racing.

Possibly the worst combination in the series? (though I've not tried the LX4 on the rallycross track yet)
