With the increased use of ragdolls and environment physics to increase immersion in Half Life 2 and other FPSes, I'd say we're not too far off from loading the CPU to the point where a dedicated physics accellerator justifies its cost. It won't do to offload physics on the GPU or an extra core on the CPU since they're not optimized for the specialized repetitive physics computations that would be required.
You're assuming that what I'm suggesting is to simply send the login info for all users to any two-bit forum related to lfs. On the contrary, what I want is more use of the league subforums that have been created here on lfsforum.net precisely so that I don't have to go to other forums hosted on other servers and so that people don't need to host other forums on other servers to manage discussion of their league.
My vision of it would be to give league owners little fiefdoms here with enough control to make more subforums under their current ones if they need them and control who can read them or write to them. For example, if you have a subforum for posting an event's server password you could restrict it so only members of your league could view it. Or you could simply send a PM with the info to all members of that group.
This can be done through things like permissions set in group memberships, which I have seen done in many general interest forums. Even the Clean Racers Club has subforum access defined by memberships in usergroups for applicants and full members. It's a pretty common feature. A league owner wouldn't need to know someone's password to add or remove their name from a group.
Registering a new account on forum after forum every time I want to join a new league is a pain in the arse. Several leagues have been given subforums here, but most consist of a few posts that amount to little more than "come join our league on this other website!". They might as well just be links instead of proper subforums.
I realize that a single subforum might not be enough to fit a league organizer's administrative needs. Would it be possible to give league owners more control over their subforums, to create a structure of message boards that fit their needs so they don't have to make their own?
Perhaps also incorporating some of the features of the other websites, like the OWRL's calendar and race signup method. A central calendar where any league owner could add his or her events.
Basically I want to be able to sign up for any league by using my current lfs login.
If you have a look at the LFS website, they stopped selling S1 licenses. Now it's S2 or nothing even though it's still in alpha state. It's probably safe to assume they don't intend to allow that kind of content-limited unified server access(as opposed to the current license-level segregated access) or that they didn't plan for it and it would be too much work to add now. Who knows, maybe they'll fix it for S3 so S2 owners can join S3 servers when only S2 content is being used.
Excellent job. It's about damn time there was a central resource for the league races. Do you think you could also include the Gran Prix Virtual races?
Shiver me timbers, you're right! So much for the 3-tier purchase setup. S1 was cheap by any standard and S2 is in the mid to low range of PC game prices. By the time S3 rolls around it'll be at the very high end of game prices. For us the upgrade will only be a low 12 pounds, but for new players it'll have lost the incentive of a low cost of entry with options for car/track expansions.
Given what the guy said about GT in the video, I think it would be better to wait before wanting to show it off on Top Gear. Not only until the tyre and aero issues are resolved, but until implementation of things like brake heat and fade, varying grip when on/off the racing line, and a fuller range of sounds. After all, wouldn't you want LFS to succeed in the aspects GT failed?
Looking at the easy time he had with the game though, it makes me wonder if they neglected to turn off the game's driving aids.
The intro is waaaay too long. It's a full minute before the car even moves and three minutes before you get to the meat of a four minute video! The track is so hard to see that you don't get any sense of speed when you hit 300+ speeds.
You can see the effect if you look close when you roll up slowly to one of the problem areas. The tires only detect contact on the very bottom patch. As you get closer to the sidewalk, you'll see the front of the tire clip into the edge. When the contact patch reaches the vertical ledge, it is suddenly pushed up to the higher level. This makes the suspension compress instantly and when it rebounds you take off.
It makes me wonder if the contact patch is always horizontal on uphills and downhills.
The GT used to be a second or two faster than the Gti, at least in BL GP. At some point, I don't remember when, the Gti's power was bumped up a bit to make it more competitive with the GT. Apparently it was a little too much, and now the situation is reversed.
He's still going to get that fancy damage modelling even if he can't afford to upgrade, just like he got the all the new physics/language upgrades. Except for the aero effects, since S1 cars don't generate downforce. S2 and S3 licenses are just to unlock the new tracks and cars, remember?
There was a thread about that a while ago, but the devs said that combining access for S1 and S2 users like that would be too much work for too little benefit, since most people have moved on to S2. Sadly, that leaves a few like M1N1M4N in the lurch online(although they're given fair warning now). Shame to lose the multiplayer side of the track/car "expansion" effect but oh well, what are ya gonna do.
Great movie! I liked the music too, it was a good match to the slo-mo. Shame a lot of movie makers think death metal makes for good driving/racing music. Maybe the setup was too stiff to show off the physics to the fullest in some parts, like braking seen from behind. Might a side view make the forward weight shift more obvious?
Second the request for a rallycross slomotion. Maybe with the XRG?
