I agree, I don't really like the current screen too much, it gives the impression that it's ok to crash on demo education is a better option I think, with maybe a small disclaimer at the bottom about demo being unlic so therefore behaviour can't be controlled...
I also think that some links in the game itself to lfsworld, lfsforum and the main site would be good for those that are first trying the game
I agree and this will be especially true for online play best thing you could do is increase your processing power... i.e. look into what options you have for upgrading memory to higher speed and the processor to a higher performing one (find out the max your motherboard can support then try find it) doing this want lift your max fps much but will likely improve your minimum fps when online. Also in your case if the motherbaord will allow it you might want to learn abit about overclocking and give it ago normally I wouldn't suggest it but in your case it might be the only way to imrpove your lot without a major upgrade but I wouldn't expect too much (15-25% for max fps and maybe 25-35% for minimum fps, depending on how much its possible to OV) Just be very conscious of extra heat generated and the fact that it can shorten the life of your PC.
Really I think your best option, if you don't want to buy a new PC, is look for a second hand system/box, try your local auction houses if you live in a city, they often will be selling off reasonable systems for bugger all.
Here's a recent thread about cpu vs graphic card performance, it's talking about newer PCs than your's but the general principle is the same...
Here in RL you can buy a car and you pay for a license to drive on the road but you can loose both. New anti hoon laws here now , even if you spin your tyres taking off from the lights you can get your car confiscated for a period of time, so if you don't obey the law
In the LFS terms and conditions they state that disruptive behaviour can result in a temporary or permanent ban (clause 1.5) so they don't have a leg to stand on
Anyway even if a ban by the developers isn't implemented it's only a matter of time before individuals like this will be out in the cold, as our reputations often preceded us wether they are good or bad
I suppose that it isn't or shouldn't be the aim of a sim to replace the real life racing experience, but rather to create an arena where the same skills that are required to be successful in RL racing are needed to be successful in the sim, on this base, as technology expands and our budgets allow we can add components to make the experience more immersive. That is why I also don’t object to some “aids” in sims that make allowances for things which just can’t be replicated because of technology and financial restraints.
So when we ask if it feels right, what we really are asking is if we use x technique for racing in RL, does it give similar results in the sim? And if you learn new techniques in LFS can they be applied to RL?
Where LFS is streets ahead imo is that it is endeavouring to do this mainly for online play against other human races, rather than mainly against AI racers with online play as optional or as an afterthought. No matter how good AI are, I find them just plain boring in comparision to racing real live people
Sis is the chipset manufacturer, what you need to do is check your documents or take the cover off your PC and look for the motherboard manufacturer and video card manufacturer, then find there support section at there website for driver updates and BIOS updates.
Even if you just get whatever information you can find on the motherboard and video card then google that info you will find something...
Based on that here is a link from their support section for checking and updating the BIOS, at least have a look at the "How to install" link as that explains how to enter your BIOS setup screen and check what version you have if it is earlier than 0aavwp13 then updating it may help with your problem. Be careful and follow the instructions.
Once you have updated the BIOS, unistall the fx 5500 drivers, rboot, then install the AGP driver (above), reboot, then reinstall the FX 5500 drivers again... hopefully it will work then
If it doesn't, then I think the only likely solution to getting your OS to reallocate resources correctly is to backup your data, format your hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch
Very interesting results it certainly does highlight the importance of cpu speed in LFS...
It is interesting to note that it has the largest impact on the minimum fps where it is for each 1% gain in cpu speed there is a 1.8% gain in fps where for the maximum fps it has the least effect (i.e. for each 1% gain in cpu there is a 1.26% gain in fps)
That gives me the impression that adding in a better video card in a system, will likely result in better maximum fps but will help the minimum fps by a much smaller proportion
Where as upgrading the cpu will increase the maximum fps a little but will have the most significant impact on the minimum fps. Which is the most important aspect for online racing
So it does indeed point to the general assumption of upgrade your cpu before graphics card is correct.
Can you please post the replay you used and what time points you used for the test, I'd like to try it on my system just for curiosity sake
Just how do those tests determine that? I noticed you have got a 2.4 OC to 3.2, why don't you drop the processor speed back to 2.4 and run the tests again those results would be interesting
And your obviously really SMART as you KNOW that all people that use pitspotter are nascar fans and turn off half their brains relying totally on pitspoter No need to be so inflexible on some things you know try walk a mile in others shoes every now and again... not everyone has the same PC, controller, or even physical or mental abilities as you
It's ok Tristian because we are unlikely to meet on the track as I'm well aware of my capabilities and restrict myself mostly to the road cars, leave the GTR's and SS to you BETTER people that can use all their brains
BTW that is one of the features that makes LFS so appealing, that it can catter for all levels of skill and ability, not everyone will be, or for that matter wants to be Michel Shumaker in the sim world, some just enjoy racing at the sim world equivelent of club racing
Sorry to be so sarcastic with you Tristian you just pushed the right buttons LOL
I agree with geeman half throttle just means more will not use brakes at all
As for being able to see people, use whatever works for you. Just make sure you know whats going on around you I have always used the look function, but always used to find I would give too much room to others in corners (mainly because I'm always concerned about lag hits)... so now I use pitspotter and the look functions. The look function is great on straights and setting up for corners but I find pitspotter great for close racing mid corner and that is where the real danger area is (I also use a 68deg fov) And as for the pitspotter not being realistic well in real life you just get so much more sensesory feedback that you need some aids in sim driving to make up for the lack of them some people get real good at turning there heads real quick, some go for large screens, projectors or three screen maxtrox pharelia setups to compensate and some use utilities like pitspotter... point is use what works for you
Sry should have clearified what I meant a little better, I'm refering more about S1 cars and tracks as I don't believe the AI have been updated sufficiently for S2 cars tracks and on the oval well thats where there the most likely to get the best results as it is more about race craft and less about race techniques (i.e. line, trail braking, etc.)
Try bypass the wireless temporarily with a hradwired network cable, see if that makes a difference... I've never found a wireless network I've been happy with I've gone back to hard wired every time
True but I was thinking it might have something to do with how the car info isn't as precise for cars on the opposite side of the track from where you are, and when you tab (jump to another car quickly) accross the other side of the track it might take a few moments to stabalise just an impression I get... I obviously am not qualified to identify what it actually is I can only relay what I see, and make a stab in the dark at what it might be, and when several people do that, an obvious reason might become apparent
Anyway this particular glitch is nothing major imo, but would be nice to know what causes it. I have seen it happen where say there is 10 people on the server, I've connected and am just spectating, and viewing 7-8 of the drivers it looks totally normal but on 1 or 2 you get that effect. even if you cycle through the drivers several times, those two drivers still appear in twilight zone
The AI have reached there maximum after about 60 laps of practise... thats from S1 and it hasn't changed significantly in S2 until the do an overhaul on the AI
I don't think you will ever see the AI be as fast as the WR holders on a track/car combo that would be one amazing feat of artificial intellegence programing if they took no shortcuts (i.e. gave the AI better grip and such) even better than the code for the game imo
The AI are really only there to train newcomers to LFS and it does a reasonable job of that, as in if you can race consistently with the AI you'll be able to get around the track reasonably cleanly online, although not all that competitively
But want it just encourage people not to post there best times and always hold something in reserve I suspect that there is a number that already do that as they are waiting for the next major physics update before they go all out anyway
[edit]That could create some more interesting races though a guy who is actually faster doesn't try so hard in hotlaps and qual and therefore starts back in the grid slightly with no ballast or little and a guys that goes all out in qual get to cary 50kg of ballast and is on the front couple of rows well you get the idea will create some good action to watch as the guy back in the field comes through ...[/edit]
Your asking for help in the entirely wrong section of the forum, should post technical related questions in the "Technical Assistance" subforum http://www.lfsforum.net/forumdisplay.php?f=5
Can you post some more info? Like what screen mode you are using, operating system, etc.. and post it in a new thread under the above subforum so it doesn't clutter up this thread (which is unrelated)...
You can do it now, have a serries of short races (5 laps), and the winner of each race has to take on a girl the first one to get a full load of girls wins the serries have done it a few times and its a real blast, it is commonly refered to as "a hoe down" around these parts
I'm not overly in favour of a ballast system, how would you implement it? I think it would be hard to police and easy to hack it would also reduce the efficiency of the ip packet traffic which is one of LFS better points... it's very effiecient net code
I get the same sometimes when viewing others, even more interesting for some cars I view it can be normal even in the same area of the track but for one or two others I can get what you've got there... because of that I've always put it down to some sort of wiered lag effect
[edit]Sorry m8 I'll probably miss you today, as I've got to goto sleep shortly (4am start tomorrow it's gonna kill me I haven't done day shift for months and are used to sleeping in till late ) Anyway from what you've said and what I've read about similar problems on several forums, I'm afraid it sounds like the most likely solution will be to clear your bios setting (clear cmos jumper on motherboard) then format your hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch, as it appears that is the only way XP will reallocate resources correctly with mortherboard of the ACPI type. Which is not a 5min job [/edit]
You've given me enough info for the video card but not the motherboard, open the case and read the info directly off the motherboard (it's the largest board in the case ) I need the manufaturer and model number as a minimum.
[edit]Do you know how to get into the cmos setup? Sometimes there is an option to reallocate system resouces on restart...[/edit]
[edit2]found this on evga support...
6) Check the video card IRQ. First make sure your bios has an IRQ assigned to the Video card. Check your motherboard manual for more information on the bios. Most (if not all) modern motherboards will have this on by default. Make sure there is NOTHING in the PCI slot adjacent to the AGP slot. Go to your control panel and find the "System" icon (it will be under "Performance and Maintanence" if you are in the default Catagory view) . From the System Properties go to the "Hardware" tab and click on the "Device Manager" button. Now type ALT-V and then "N" to view resources by connection. Scroll down until you find the listing for the video card. Take note of what IRQ it is on. Now see what other devices are on that same IRQ. Inform us of all the devices on that IRQ. You may be able to disable them without affecting the PC by right clicking on the device and clicking DISABLE. Make sure you know what those devices are before you disable them. With XP you cannot change IRQs if you have an ACPI PC. A reinstall of XP might be required if an IRQ conflict is determined to be the problem.
If you can follow the instructions above and see if there is an IRQ assigned and if there is a conflict...
The conflicts you list above are memory conflicts which possibly can be resolved by clearing the cmos (bios settings) then rebooting. See your motherboard manual for how to do this (its normaly done via a jumper on the motherboard).
Hopefully you can get the motherboard details and i can investigate that side of things too... [/edit]
