Quote from WGooden :wow, i hate compputers.. Im trying to get this card working (geforce fx5500 256mb agp) and ive got the drivers and everything installed but its not working, and it says in the device manager 'the device cannot find any free input/output resources to use' Can anyne help me possibly quickly.

I have agp 2.0 and it says it works fine with it, I know its supposed to even on the nvidia site it said it should work. I dont know what i/o device its talking about. pleease help

Tell me the exact manufacturer and model names of you motherboard and new card and I'll see what I can dig up. Also what other cards do you have in your system? maybe try take some out and then see if the video card installs...

When you say you get nothing, is the power supply working? Do you see any indication of power on the m/b i.e. fans kick in for a second when you first connect the power or any LEDs... also look for any socketed chips on the m/b and push them firmly back in (sometimes they can work there way out over time) do you get any beeps or noises from the motherboard when you try boot?
Also tack out the memory and try boot just with the power supply and m/b, do you get any beeps?

Yep that does seem abit odd that your not seeing ANY increase in performance then you still didn't mention OS (is it WinXP? cause it is memory and cpu hungry)
Things that come to mind to try or invetigate
1. Is the memory you have both the same rating? (if one is slower than the other you might be better off without the slower one)
2. Check in your bios setup for AGP settings and see if they are correctly configured.
3. How many other programs are running when you use LFS? Try closing down as many as you can through the task manager.
4. Check you computer for trojens, viruses, spyware, adware, etc...
5. Play with some settings in LFS try:
under Graphics -
Disable rubber - all
Disable flags - all
Disable trees - all
Simple wheels - mirror or all
Shadow type - low res or off
Enable dither - no
Half texture - no
Mip filter - no
HVS - on
Z-Buff - 16 or 24
Simple track - off
Haze effect - Yes or No
under Misc -
Multiplayer Speedup - yes
Multiplayer car Draw - 150m or less
6. If you change all the settings for your video card to get best performance is there any increase in fps over settings from max quality?

Thats about all I can think of at the moment... and its 1am so bed time

Hope you get some improvement, I wouldn't have thought the poor performance was just due to the Celeron

Quote from WGooden :well I see now that I have an agp slot.. its 4x though but I guess any card will still work with it. Going to get an agp card today not sure which one but Ill see whats under 60 bucks.

To be safe tell them that your agp is 4x, i think it does matter...
Best of luck though

Quote from audimasta :Hi

Something's wrong here.....I've installed my new card, and everything seems ok.... But i'm not having ANY increase in FPS in LFS compared to my old card! I did a test on 3D Mark 2001, and there it worked a lot better than my old card. But not in LFS... Its still the Gainward 6600GT 256MB. Any suggestions?

You mentioned you had the following:
Celeron 2.8GHz
768MB
Old card ATi 9250 256MB 40fps (single car) 10-25fps (with other cars)
New card Nvidia 6600GT 256M

You haven't mentioned what bus your cards use PCI, AGP or PCI-E? and what are the fps you get now? What is the operating system you have installed? Did you change any settings in LFS in regards to graphics?

Some other questions that come to my mind regarding performance on your setup... does your motherboard support dual channel memory configs? as im guessing you must have 3x 256M or 1x 512 and 1x 256?

m8 I see your still having trouble even with the mem from work...

Can you get to bios setup? if you cant then, before you jump to conclusions... disconnect all your drives (floppies, hard disk and cd etc.) take out all your pci and isa cards enable the onboard vga again and put back in your original mem proably even set all your bios settings back to default and then see if your system will fire (as in let you get into bios setup screen) you may even need to clear the cmos (bios settings) from the jumper on the mother board if you still can't access the bios setup.

If you are able to get into the bios setup then disconnect the xp hd and only have the win98 hd connected in your system, like above take out all your addon cards and enable your onboard vga, go into bios setup and set it all to default. Try to boot the system (if it starts to load win98 turn off the computer imidiately so it doesn't recognise hardware changes) if it did start to load win98 though you have sucess... next put back in your vga card and disable the onbaord on again, try boot the system (same as above), if it works do the same for each of the remaining cards...

tell us how it went and we can celebrate or go further into it...

[edit]I was writing this while you posted so follow the first section seeing how you can't get into the setup screen at all, definately clear the bios settings by the onboard "clear cmos" jumper, normaly a 3 pin arangement... with some m/b you simply change the jumper position for a few seconds and it done for others you have to change the jumper position then boot with it in that position[/edit]

Quote from mrodgers :Oh, well, no racing over the weekend or for a while until I can find a motherboard now. I just wish the MB went bad BEFORE I got this card. I'll have a lot more options out there that I wouldn't be able to afford.

Bummer I take it the 256MB stick from work didn't work...

Yep and as the community grows larger the options in career paths will increase at the moment there's not enough options for those that would just like to race one type of car most leagues are swaping and changing cars all the time or only have short seasons in one car... that's fine for now, as we all are still getting to know the cars but I'd love a league that just run FZ5 for example (like carerra cup here in Aus in RL) and if more leagues catered for one car it doesn't mean you would be stuck with one car, you could always join several leagues or one league organiser could run several categories or classes within their league

Quote from Jakg :i always thought that only the very very top end cards were anywere near pushing the AGP specs? i only thought it went PCI-E now because of the rocessors changing pins!

Mrodgers doesn't have PCI-E or AGP he's got PCI which is definately less performance than AGP or PCI-E but you are right there's no significant advantage to using PCI-E at the moment, but that's true for all the latest technology which is why I personally avoid buying newly released top-end hardware better to buy stuff that's been on the market for a few months, the price will have come down significantly and any problems with the initial release will have been found and fixed

Just a couple of quick comments about mee too's post...

If an intruder can see anything on your hard drive, or even see your pc from the internet! your security has failed and that's well before they can start altering files on your hard drive

There is plenty of software and services available for securing your PC these days and I'd suggest it is of the same importance as your Operating System itself

i.e. I personaly would make sure I have good security software that covers: virus, hacker (trojens etc), greyware (spyware, adware), internet (firewall) threats as well as checking your basic security levels of your operating system (passwords, shared folders, network protocals enabled, etc) and run security checks to validate your assumptions unfortunately the default settings of XP is not exactly secure, so we need to know a bit about security and spend a bit of money on security/ antivirus software if we want peace of mind

P.s. also the default settings in alot of security software is not always set to the highest level and often require the user to understand a little about it and manually run some things, to get the best level of security...

Quote from deggis :sireric: Just curious lol, do you actually play LFS or did you just get the license to test LFS and the driver issue? You work for ATI, right?

He was a demo user on the earlier post so he's just got it now if we can get the majority of ati guys into LFS we would have great support even surround gaming support for 3 monitors

Quote from mrodgers :I'm not an expert, audimasta, but I'd have to disagree with bbman. But I may be wrong, like I said, I'm not an expert. Since I have a P4, but only 2.5 GHz and you have a 2.8, but only a Celeron, I think we would probably be similar, maybe me taking a slight edge because of it being a P4. I've also heard Celerons are NOT good for gaming whatsoever. Upgrading your card, may allow you more AA/AF or higher resolution, ie, making it look prettier, but I'd say performance wise, your processor is the bottleneck as it is also in my machine. If I can't get any performance increase going from max AA/AF, max resolution (monitor hampered 1024x768x32) and max graphics settings in LFS, to minimum graphics and even dropping to 800x600x16, then you'd probably be the same. You could get it looking prettier than you have now, but you wouldn't gain FPS. I'm currently running a Diamond Radeon 9250 256 mb, but it is PCI (no AGP on the MB) and my bottleneck is still in the processor. But like I said first, I'm not an expert, especially with gfx cards, as this is the first one I've ever had that wasn't onboard and I just got it a few months ago.

The card you got there is low end and it's pci so that WOULD affect your performance as much as your cpu, I had a P4 2.6 and AGP 9600Pro128 it gave me 80-90 max and 30 - 40 min fps.
In LFS the CPU does have a big effect on fps but it's NOT the only thing that effects fps infact in your case I'd be bold enough to say the bottleneck in your system for fps IS the pci low end video card.
Also in regards to celeron and P4 for gaming, while that used to be very ture, I'd think the gain from celeron to P4 is no where as big as it used to be... LFS isn't even optimised to use the P4 fully anyway shrug
Hope you get your system back up and running for this weekend at the moment thats your biggest bottleneck

Quote from WGooden :hmm its an athlon that runs alittle above 1ghz.. its about 5 years old lol. My fps are similar to yours.. I always use no mirrors, and every thing on its lowest settings. Although offline my fps are alot better.

Bummer dude I thought you were gonna have your new PC by now
If your going to get it in the next few months I wouldn't do anything with your current system from a 1Ghz cpu I don't think you'll get a huge jump (especially in online servers with 20 connections) If circumstances have changed and your not going to be getting your new PC for quite some time then I'd look at upgrading some stuff... how much money can you get

I would think along the lines of clownpaint... you can try after you start LFS in the task manager to set LFS's priority level to "high" or "system process" and see if that helps If it doesn't I'd suggest rebooting to safe mode (press F8 at start-up, and select safe mode) then goto www.antivirus.com and run their "house call" service to see if you have got much in the way of addware and greyware your not aware of. If it finds alot of crap I'd say it's time for an upgrade of your security software (firewall, antivirus and antispyware software) My wife's laptop was behaving very sluggish recently and that is what it was

Like tristan says though the more information you give us the more likely we can help... ie versions of software, O/S any changes you have made recently, any other info about how the laptop is behaving...how you connect to the internet (dialup, broadband, via network, etc.) how much free space is left on your hard disk? do you use a swap file? or have you disabled swapfiles with 2G of mem? Is automatic updates enabled and its updating in the background?

You can feel lockup through the pedal... it is very easy to feel with abs (but what you feel with abs is different because you feeling hydraulic pressure being released then reapplied) but you can feel it in normal hydraulic systems too especially on gravel roads think about it a hydraulic brake system is a "semi-solid" system it transfers your foot force from one point to another with amplification, so it's only natural that the reverse would be happening but with negative gain (instead of positive)... point is there is feel there, but i guess it depends on the hydraulic system design (amount of gain), the shoes you are wearing and your driving style Same is true for the old rack and pinoin steering without power assist, you can feel the road more without powerassist but you can still feel it with power steering but just to a much lesser degree If you replaced the hydraulic brake system with a pure mechanical system you would feel alot I'm sure... so the same is still there but just to a much lesser degree also the feel you get through the pedal is not just from the hydrolic system, there's also vibrations etc tranfered from the chasis, guess what i'm saying is when your driving you get a hell of alot of feedback through your feet and seat of your pants

Oops gota run here comes my boss

You have a point there joey... while i am very happy with the level of information that we get (i read the forums every day, um well several times a day, um even every time i go past the pc ) not all read the forums regularly and so would find it difficult to keep up, so yes it would be good to have all the info in one place... but then again all you need to do is a search for all posts made by Scawen It does seem to me also people read things then forget what was said a month later so maybe a sticky with a log of all Scawens posts would be the ticket

Except this was all gone over just before xmas and Scawen answered quite ok at that time indicating he would be spending time in his social life and reno's etc. while doing some research and then after xmas would be getting back into it full time

And by the second week in January there's people screaming again

Wtf can you do in 2 weeks? or closer to home how much have you achieved in 2 weeks since being back at work? And if you don't work well that explains it illepall

I mean ATI with a team of people couldn't get it's new drivers fixed for LFS in 2 weeks so what do you expect in 2 weeks from Scawen, you know the situation before xmas if you read the forums (this very thread even), so you know there is alot to do still, so ffs give him some time and breathing room to do it I'd expect it to take 1 month just to do testing and experimenting with the tyre and areo physics before he even can start hard coding things...

Unless of course you really just want a half assed rushed job illepall

Personally I would like to see it finished as a very high quality product that will stay on my hard drive for a very long time mind you it's already surpased every other game I've ever owned in that regard

P.s. I just got woken up at 6am by my dogs fighting each other after staying up last night to 2am can you tell?

Looked at the site, 3.95 one time payment for life time free feed to your pc via broadband internet sounds good! but maybe too good they say its totally above board in FAQ but i still have doughts myself... but for 3.95 who cares if it stops in 6 months or has probs well it was only 3.95 unless they are a front company to drain your accounts then that would hurt lol

Anyone tried it?

And if you go for this it would only be free till you hit your download limit so make sure you have a unlimited download broadband account

If you've got a sat dish and reciever than any unencrypted signal is free to air and I'd guess if you had the know how and deciphered an encrypted signal on you own equipement (not their equipement hacked) for non comercial purposes they wouldn't be able to touch you either, but as to that offer sounds pretty fishy to me

As too sky not really caring, well it would only be a matter of time before they did in the last year here in Aus they have gone to great lengths to stop people hacking their boxes... alot of people I know had invested in gear to get "free" sat feeds and found themselves with rather expensive door stops, which I must say made me smile as I had resisted the temptation
