Check if your soundcard is supported here.
What Netgear adapter or what chip does it use?
You can always try and download a LiveCD and see if you sound card/network adapter works there. It will usually autodetect all supported hardware and load the drivers for you.
If it was up to me which OS should rule the world, it wouldn't be neither XP, Vista or Linux. It would be BeOS. I've never been so impressed by an OS as when I first tried it years back. Excellent filesystem, speed and API.
But yeah, it took me a while too when I got into Linux to learn the commands and filesystem layout. So no doubt that someone who's never tried Linux before will have some trouble getting around.
It's true that it takes a while to install, and every program you install must be compiled, and that takes some time too. Gentoo is a source based distribution, as there are no precompiled binaries being installed. It's all being compiled and optimized for your computer. Portage is the heart of this. To quote from the Gentoo website:
"Portage is also a package building and installation system. When you want to install a package, you type emerge packagename, at which point Portage automatically builds a custom version of the package to your exact specifications, optimizing it for your hardware and ensuring that the optional features in the package that you want are enabled -- and those you don't want aren't."
So yes, Gentoo is not for the typical user, but more for those experienced Linux users who wants the most configurable and fastest Linux system available.
Oh, and if I'm not there during the qualify and race, someone please save the replays and give me a link to where I can download them. So I can make the statistics.
I think it should be alright. There's 20 drivers, and 3 slots for officials. I was thinking of taking one of those slots myself, but I can watch it from the spectator or lfstv if you set that up. Besides, if the Core team doesn't show up like last time there will be an additional 2 slots available.
Ok, haven't tried it myself, only heard good things about it. I like to be in control of things and configure stuff by hand, that's why I use Gentoo. But then I've used Linux for like 15 years, so I have no problems fixing issues.
Mainly because I'm not getting the same flow driving the later patches due to different speedo reading and the new sounds. I was planning on sticking to U until the next incompatible patch came out. But I think I'll just keep using U for hotlapping and install V for online use.
Yep, that's what I've experienced too. They don't seem to work good together, so I usually turn off lfslapper when we need to have insim running for spectator. Enabling insim relay at lfsworld seems to kill the lfslapper after a couple of minutes.
