I was thinking "I only have 5 out of 6 homescreens, so why not create a new one and see how it turns out?"

And that's how it turned out:

I'm really happy with it. It's very practical to turn on the phone and automatically have live messenger online for me. It works so great! It is integrated on the system, so for example, when I receive a sms or someone call me I can see their Live Messenger and Orkut status right beside their names, along with their latest twitter, facebook, foursquare and linkedin updates and a big photo of them, all automatically synchronized.

Quote from Boris Lozac :Anyone seen this, looks like N8 has some major problems, hope yours runs fine Velociround.

http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/ ... w-problems-and-questions/

Before beginning this post I'd like to invite people who like/has some kind of interest in/want to know more about the new Symbian (and others too, including phone models) to join me in a chat or something like that so we can share experiences and knowledge about it in general. My email is driv3r15(at)hotmail(dot)com and I'm always happy to offer help, suggest cool apps and games or just talk. You can also send a PM and we can talk about other things or platforms too.

Now, about that link... Sometimes I find hard to believe what I'm reading when I see that kind of comments in a website, because when I look at my phone and my heavy usage of it for everything I just think: "how come these people have got problems? I've never seen or experienced anything like this".

I noticed through some reading on that website that most problems are about rebooting, and there are some talking about battery and power problems. In fact, Nokia actually had few defective N8 produced with battery/power problems and wouldn't turn on again; they recognized this problem, the CEO told the press it was minor and compromised themselves to get these unlucky consumers that got defective units brand new N8, all you have to do is contact Nokia Care (also if you have any other kind of problems). PS: these defective phones were only produced in one of Nokias "fabrics", I don't know which, but it wasn't the one in Brazil (it's written under my phone: made in Brazil. I'm so proud to have a phone I really like produced in my country! It gives me some kind of patriotism feelings)

Now, about the rebooting part... I have no idea how people manage to do that. I've never had problems with this, and it's not like I spend my whole day optimizing the phone to run well, I just use it without worries. My N8 only rebooted by itself once: I had about 9 apps open, 3G(internet data), wifi(remote pc control), bluetooth(listening to music), and USB (connected to my "backup pc" to transfer photos and videos) at the same time. Everything was just fine until I decided to change the USB mode while it was connected from PC connectivity to Mass Storage mode. The former allows Ovi Suite to do whatever it wants with the phone and also browsing through all phone data without dismounting the drives (which means phone and PC can browse, read and write on the phone's drives simultaneously. But it's a bit slower for the pc if compared to Mass Storage because the phone has higher access priority.
In Mass Storage mode, the phone dismounts all its drives (except for the system) and gives the PC full access to them (like a pen drive), but you won't see the drives on the phone again until you either change the mode back or disconnect the cable so the phone can mount the drives again. So, when I changed the mode, the phone tried to dismount the drives and then rebooted in the new USB mode. I don't know why, maybe dismounting the drives while reading data on them (music) and with apps installed on them running was not such a good idea. Never happened again, though, and I couldn't reproduce this ever since.

So anyway, I'm very happy with my N8, and in these 4 months I've been using it I have never experienced any problems. I've had more than 300 apps/games installed (currently 29X, I had to get rid of some of them) and even some "hacks" (100% jpg photo quality, video recording hacks, 6 homescreens hack, etc). No problems.
Thank you for asking.

Notes: I have nothing against other platforms, it's just that I enjoy Symbian (S60v3 and Symbian^3) much more and I like it better because it suits me better. As such, I'll likely talk more about it when it seems relevant... it's my new hobby

Quote from Töki (HUN) :LOL symbian... It's dead and slow. I hate my 5800 already.

Well, that's because the S60v5 is actually dead! Many of them being discontinued. There are new iterations of it that work a lot better but still, they're only sold because they run on cheap hardware. I don't intend to hate on your phone but to be honest, the 5800's touchscreen is the worst of any Nokia I have used (most likely because it was the first touchscreen Nokia phone), and also because of that, its Symbian is the least optimized for touchscreen. You must make so much pressure that kind of defeats the point of touchscreen, and it is easily scratched.

Try out the new Symbian phones! The C6-01 is a great new Symbian phone that is cheap and has very good quality hardware. You'll notice a huge difference from the 5800 in everything, also notably on the screen which is made from glass (almost scratch-proof), it's AMOLED (great quality, brightness, clarity and colors) and capacitive multitouch. Not to mention it has a dedicated graphics card and runs the latest (and greatest) 3D games (as Gameloft would say, HD games).

Quote from MINIz guy :Symbian S50v5 is dead to me. I hate my 5530 too; I at least wish I went with a 5800 to atleast have some more screen real estate.

I really want to go Andriod or iOS now.

I particularly like the 5530 a lot better than the 5800, even though it lacks 3G, video calling and TV-Out. The 5530's touchscreen is also a lot more sensitive.

Quote from g7usl :The problem with adding more features would mean higher spec computers to run them with. Not everyone is flush with cash to spare to chasee

I really don't think this is a good argument. What are 99 bucks for a new graphics card when you've spent like 300 or more dollars on a G27? And if you are going to tell me "not everybody has a G25/27", then what's the point of simulating if you don't have the necessary input to really simulate (for those talking about simulation)? What's more, if you're going to play with keyboard and mouse anyway, what's the problem with porting it to mobile and playing on a screen? (addressing most of the points in this thread)

I believe money is not the problem. The developers seem to just don't want to implement graphics. Even DirectX 8 supports many of the features people have been asking (weather conditions, some "cooler" graphics, etc). The problem is, it is getting too old. And I still think OpenGL would be faster and easier in that matter once they ported LFS to it.

But that doesn't matter, they'll do whatever they want with their game and I'll be happy to check this out when it's done. I'm already happy I bought this simulator, I had a pretty good time with it.

Quote from Nick7 :Velociround, you're joking, right?
Having driving *simulation* on *phone*????

No, thank you...

Real Racing 2's producers Firemint beg to disagree. Their iPhone game features real time physics, real cars, real tracks, tires and suspension simulation, real time weather (with rain and several different settings!), real time lighting and shadow systems, as well as different time of the day settings and cockpit (inside the car) view. It runs on OpenGL 2.0 at 960x640, has more constant updates than LFS and is also a lot cheaper. Not to mention higher polygon count on cars and all other features LFS as a PC game just doesn't have, but even most mobile games do have. I haven't played it myself but all of its videos look really good, and if I hadn't told you beforehand it is a mobile game you would search google to find out where to buy this game for PC.

Oh, I almost forgot: you can also drive the Volkswagen Scirocco.

By the way, if LFS devs port this to Symbian, you will be able to play LFS in 1280x720p on your HDMI display with your G27 wheel plugged on USB OTG.
(I guess one can never dream too much )

Come on, even if you dislike the idea of putting it on a mobile phone, just think about how better graphics would get, faster updates and native compatibility with Mac and Linux (we do have these kind of users here! I'm a Windows user though).

I wish they would port LFS to OpenGL 2. It would be a lot easier and faster to control and mantain graphics, and they would also be able to sell LFS for many more people (it would run natively on Mac, Linux and of course, Windows). Besides, It could also easily be ported to iOS, Symbian, WebOS, Android and other mobile OS. I'd love to play LFS on my phone! Wouldn't you?

And yes, the specs of most phones out there is just enough to play LFS very well.

I'm here too so I guess LFS is alive, though I don't show up very often because I don't have much free time left, much less to play LFS.

Quote from Boris Lozac :Sorry but that sounds like you copy pasted some PR Nokia text

I'd gladly work for Nokia if they hired me
I'm a fan of technology (all kinds of technology, specially on the high end).
I'll leave two videos I recorded of me and my sister having fun with the N8 and consequently some of its features:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tz-GKRIlc1c
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rj2b4-w_82A

In my opinion, there's not a problem with Symbian. The OS is great, fully featured and works just fine; the problem has always been with Nokia. I've been reading a lot about this matter and I can easily get to the conclusion that, if Nokia hadn't messed up SO MUCH, things would be different. Their internal organization was non-existant, their developer teams created many kinds of software and new User Interfaces; all of them incompatible with each other. They had internal competition to develop each of them their little softwares, without even caring about compatibility at all. Too many projects have been dropped, the UIs (which actually looked great and seemed to work well) could never be implemented anywhere and were also cancelled. Their developers started to make apps in widget format (slower, didn't take advantage of system hardware, looked worse, didn't have transitions, used web code and ran on the old symbian webkit browser) and release phones with these apps (N97, the Nokia disaster). Things didn't need to be like that...

And now that their teams are finally organized, the company has a programming framework that lets developers code once and deploy for all phones, and constant system updates are coming in, a new CEO from Microsoft comes in and announces "we're gonna change our OS for one without multitasking, without copy and paste, without anything all other mobile OS currently have, with few to no apps, but it's better because Symbian is a sinking ship, even though it has everything WP7 doesn't have."

I think this may be the last year of new apps and evolution of Symbian, but I'll definitely try to take the most out of it (like I'm already doing) and I hope (and believe) my N8 will last several years to come!
I think Symbian for smartphones is just like Windows 7 for tablets: it's the perfect platform, just needs a new UI for touch and developer support (specially the big ones)... I don't really think developers will suddenly start developing for WP7 just because Nokia is now producing them.

With all the new updates and features of the new Symbian, you'll be quite impressed. People think Symbian is dying; it's not. It may not have as much support from big developers (gameloft is one of them) butceven those have released dozen (actually more) games for Symbian. There are so many great apps, so many things you can do and so many features that even having a lot of great apps (I have 287 currently installed on my phone), though a bit less games than other platforms, that just makes the trade (games for features) worth it.

You know, without Symbian, you just can't get home, gather all your family, just plug the phone via HDMI on the TV and instantly show all your travel photos, make slideshows and play music, also with the ability to sing karaoke and watch movies, all from the comfort of your sofa using a remote control. Then you can go play some games using the same remote control or the Wiimote!
That alone made me want this phone a lot. And combined with all of its other features and build quality, and also promises from Nokia to spend the whole year 2011 updating it, providing new apps, encouraging developers to use Qt, and giving it a whole new interface (PR 3.0 is coming this year!), I just decided purchasing it would great, and I'm impressed and not disappointed.

Gorilla glass AMOLED 3,5" multitouch capacitive screen (really beautiful)
Anodized alluminium body (feels great)
HDMI, compass, accelerometer, light and proximity sensors, gps two mics (used for many things including stereo audio recording and noise cancelling)
3,5mm connector for connection of TV out, speakers, ear phones and microphones
Incredible camera with very high quality that has exceeded the performance and quality of all of my family's previous dedicated digital cameras (all of them: 8mp ones, 12mp ones, 14mp ones, and even expensive sony equipment). The only thing it did not exceed was (understandably) the complex and huge lens from this sony camera (and optical zoom). Apart from that, the 28mm wide angle tessar carl zeiss lens with huge sensor (biggest ever put in a phone) and xenon flash is still unrivailed. LG tried to come up with an "optimus" something that should record in 1080p (N8 does 720p), but the quality of the optimus both in 1080p and 720p just cannot provide more clarity, detail and quality, because resolution alone means nothing.

USB on the go (USB Host) providing the ability to pretty much plug anything on the phone's USB and use it normally like you'd do on a pc (plug-and-play, I tried myself and it's working: wired kb and mouse, wireless kb and mouse, pen drives, external HDD, printer, usb fan, usb light thingy, usb speakers, digital cameras and even other mobile phones! It works in many modes and even lets you use the N8 to charge other devices and phones via USB!)
To keep this post "short", I'll just leave this here: etc.

These are very nice tips, I'll make sure I take advantage of these when I encounter another problem with sound. Thank you so much.

I had read a bit about demuxing before, some people said it's very common and necessary specially with .mkv files. I find it weird that all .mkv movies I watched played just fine, I just had a problem with sound not playing on this mp4 one so far.

Also, VirtualDub 32bits wouldn't install on my pc (gives error "not compatible with this version of windows") and the 64bits version wouldn't open any file I tried...
Never mind, Avidemux did its job nicely and I'll have it ready in case I need to convert the sound (or video, who knows) again.

By the way, this is what I'm currently using and I'm very, very satisfied with it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWUkOFzEDtA
The Wiimote is great! It's useful for just about everything,

For people interested in more information about it, here's a brief description:
http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/nokia-big-screen
It is Nokia's media center application for phones with HDMI-out. It can play all files and codecs the N8 is able to play (which includes, but is not limited to, mp4, avi, mkv, wmv, flv, h264, mp3, wma, aac, etc), it shows pictures, includes karaoke with synchronized lyrics, it supports movie covers in jpg format and subtitles in srt format. It can play DRM-protected files including Microsoft's Zune Music Subscription, Amazon movies, Ovi Music Unlimited subscription and other protected files. Also supports downloading licenses for new DRM content, and works just fine as well with all DRM-free media.

Thanks everyone for the help!

Quote from MadCatX :I'm sure that Avidemux or VirtualDub can do that. I'm not a VirtualDub user, but you can do that in Avidemux by setting "Copy" at video codec.

Thanks a lot! This is exactly what I needed. I had tried VirtualDub before opening this thread but it didn't work with my 64bit Windows so it was pretty much useless on my pc... Never mind, Avidemux works very well and it's pretty fast at doing its job.

As a side note, just to correct myself, my problem with the video didn't have anything to do with the amount of audio channels (which was correct and does have support of Dolby Surround 5.1).
Converting tools: how to convert only audio and keep video intact?
Velociround
S2 licensed
Hello guys! I have been looking for this for a while but since I couldn't find it I figured I should ask.

I have gotten a HD movie and I want to watch it on my TV using the HDMI cable. Video plays just fine as expected, however, audio is not working because the Nokia N8 has Dolby Surround 5.1 and aparently only decodes audio up to 5 channels on the home theater. My movie has 6 channels audio.

Is there any way I can convert only the audio and keep the video intact? It would be just perfect if there were a program that would convert the audio from 6 channels to 5 channels without changing video codecs and format. It's a mp4 file by the way, but it would be a good bonus if the program allowed many formats.

Thanks in advance!
