I first started playing LFS not long before the S1 release mid 2003, went on holidays for a few weeks on my birthday which is July. I then played the demo for about a month before coming to my senses and buying S1. So my join date of Aug 2003 must be right for when I bought S1.
I still race regularly but since S2 came out it's mainly in leagues.
That's a load of bollocks in my opinion, for 1 and a half years in S1 I used wheels view, only switching to cockpit in S2 cause of the formula cars and not wanting to change my default view all the time.
There's very little difference between the two in the end, the one very minor advantage to wheels view is the aforementioned a-pillar blocking some corners.
When it comes to being quick it's all driving skill.
LFS just doesn't work that way, like others have said the ffb is influenced by the forces acting on the front wheel. If LFS is incorrect then it's more likely to do with something that affects those forces. LFS doesn't have any effects coded into the ffb, it's all generated by the physics engine.
Anyway I'd try playing with some settings Dan, I personally don't like the way most set up their ffb, the feel of the ffb is so subjective.
When it comes to understeer I do definately feel it in LFS so maybe it's just not pronounced enough. The XFR is the best car to test it out in but it's there in all of them.
Yeah I think if not your idea then maybe a RWD to compete with the XFR & UFR. I've been driving the XFR a fair bit lately and reckon something similar but RWD would be great, NA, fairly light and with slicks.
I'm sure in other sims you can have some great longer distance races offline with the AI but LFS has something even better and that's long distance races against real opponents. Every fortnight I race in a league that runs races of at least 1 hour and it doesn't get much better, next race is a 3hr driver swap event
I know leagues don't suit everyone but with the limited time that the devs have I think it would be better for them to focus on other things than the AI, of course it ain't up to me.
It'd be good to have very good AI at some point but for me personally it's a very low priority.
I run at 1680x1050 16xAF and 4xFSAA, it struggle a bit with full fields on a couple tracks but otherwise it looks superb.
Up to a point resolution doesn't seem to effect frame rates all that much, don't run LFS at the lowest res assuming that it will get you the best fps. I mean it probably does but the next res up might only cost a few fps and look a whole lot better.
Also anything above 60fps is pointless imo, I'd be increasing picture quality through resolution, AF and FSAA till you can get something steady around the 60fps mark (I run a steady 50fps).
Longest race with no breaks was about 3hrs, 90 laps at BL1 in the GTT, an event the Australasian League ran on the updated S2 alpha demo. Had my team mate rots on my tail almost the whole way
Those road tyres last a long time, only changed them once.
I agree with Gunn, sometimes LFS allows us to do something that isn't technically possible in the real world but that isn't necessarily a bad thing imo as long as the major things like physics are realistic.
I see smoke a bit like the tyre marks, easily lived without them in S1 but it was a really nice surprise when we got them.
I see them like little finishing touches, not as important as core elements but they just give that extra bit of polish that can sometimes make all the difference.
A widescreen monitor is the way to go, I got a Dell 20" LCD a few weeks back and it really helps. I'm using a FOV setting of 85 which is probably about 70-75 on a normal monitor but it still gives a great sensation of speed. I can't remember for sure but I used a similar setting of 85 on my 19" CRT and it feels faster than that did.
Hmm, I always thought the devs must have came up with is as it's been on official skins and in-game banners since S1 at least.
Anyway I'm glad the devs have taken the approach they have with the sounds but no doubt there is a huge amount of improvement to be made and I'd hope it might come before S3.
Lap times are only one part of the equation, possibly not even the most important part. I think it's possible to get classes pretty even in general but it just seems to me when this type of discussion starts people focus on hotlap times. That might be ok for the average online pickup race but in some 1hr+ league races I've done the XRR was easily the better choice over the FZR. A lot of people seem to think the FZR is the better car in all situations and would have it changed to be slower which would more than likely only make it even worse than the XRR on certain tracks in long races.
Anyway to get back to the original post I'd be happy with any new cars, whether they're in a current class or totally new. I'd hate to hear that a potentially great car wasn't added to the game simply because it had no direct competitor though.
I find some of the best racing is in single make races. It's nice to have a fairly even class but they'll never be totally even, especially now that S2 has tyre wear, fuel use etc.
I've got a 20" Dell Widescreen LCD (2005FPW) on the way which if I'm lucky will arrive tomorrow or the next day
I won't be able to spend this chrissie with the family because of a new job so I won't be spending much on pressies but the new job means I've actually got some money to spend atm.
I virtually never do a virus scan, don't have any anti-virus software on my system. If you know what your doing things like Norton are just pointless resource hogs.
Yeah I've thought of the same thing on occasion as I'm the same, paddles with formulas and shifter in all others. I spose a quick fix could be to allow two values to be asigned to some values.
