I'm currently working for the fella who founded / owned Nildram, which was sold to Pipex / Tiscali.. and a few employees have moved to where i work too now.. and have heard a "few tales" shall we say. In short, I'd sooner use AOL than Tiscali.. and that's never likely to happen either
Boring? not in the slightest.. but some of us are old enough to work for a living and sometimes have to wait for responses to be able to continue with work.
Far less than 1 post per day, quite acceptable, especially when a plenty were probably answers to questions relate to something I'd released to the community (imagine that, me being helpful to the community.. of course, before it became inundated with childish skidders and other such pricks).
Big difference between having 1,000 posts and asking what people's sh!t smelt like this morning.. but you have 'JDM' as a tag, and skid about like a kid having just passed his test, I don't expect you to understand this
Have you not seen the current "quality" of posts (in particular, thread starters) recently? This used to be a cool community, but it seems the smell from LFS being stagnant has prompted many people to post instead of drive and the post quality has gone down quicker than a hooker looking for a bonus.
Like these kids would know what social networking is. HTF did web sites replace things like the pub, cinema and other such _real_ social networking venues? The world really is going tits up.
Can't the "social-networking" bullsh!t be kept to their own sh!tty sites?
I thought this was a forum, not some "I think my life is so important, I must tell all and sundry about it" blog-like crap.
Depends if your own life is boring enough you need to know what other people are doing
What are you eating, what are you wearing, what are you......... just pointless threads created by people who've nothing to do and "think".. I'll just create a randomly crap thread on the LFS forum!
What this fascination is with knowing the ins and outs of other people I really don't know.. but it seems contagious.. from stupid gossip magazines to reality tv and now to the LFS forum.
Certainly not the best game, but I think the one I've enjoyed the most, was good ol' Hard Drivin' in the arcades (Amiga version was cool too, but not quite the same without a wheel, pedals and gear lever).
InSim on its own is nothing (in regards to servers and races). It's the developed applications that are useful (or at least have the potential to be).
I've never used it, been on a server with it, nor like skidding about, but LFSLapper I'd say would be one InSim app that is potentially useful for some things to enhance the racing. Unfortunately, InSim is to LFS what JavaScript / Flash is to teh interwebz. It's main purpose is to enhance the user experience, unfortunately, too many pricks start dabbling and create a complete mess of things that it becomes more of an annoyance than an enhancement.
ROFFLE! That's sweet! Now _there's_ some initiative!
I have nothing against a cruise server setup personally.. I think I spent about an hour on one some time ago when the idea was pretty new, but now, I think it's just some retarded method of trying to gain "virtual friends" (speaking of all the servers (and their admins) there are now, not the people actually using them). Seems the latest announcements of these types of servers are probably from people who get shunned / banned from racing servers, so this way, they can become some kind of "god" (in their own right) by having a server that may become popular. SPS (Small Penis Syndrome) I think is the correct terminology for this condition
Must say... what an original idea! No.. really, congratulations on being unique!
Love the contradiction too.... a "racing cruise server". Please find me a racing driver who believes he "cruises" around the track during a race.. jesus christ, this forum gets more and more stupid by the day.
"BETA v1.0" is funny as fsck too
Is it just me, or are these idiots confusing InSim applications with the term 'cruise'!?
They (still) use M Sex Change as a mailserver IIRC.. an inherent problem before they even start. Thankfully I've never had to use their mail "service" (joys of own mail server) but I remember reading _many_ posts from pissed off punters on their newsgroups.
[ snip ]
That's at least a good move, IMO. They must know they're crap and know there's going to be an influx of doubly-pissed off punters if they have to pay for the "privilege" of reporting a (yet another) problem.
I had this discussion with many people over the years, mainly regarding web hosting and offer naming schemes. Some companies falsely advertise "unlimited bandwidth", "unlimited web space" or such and such. That's obviously bollox. Bandwidth _always_ has a limit, even if it's the companies absolute max capacity, it's a limit. Likewise with disk space, would they infinitely install more drives for you if you required 500Tb of space?
Maybe it's a little pedantic, but 'unlimited' was something I never added to any info with regards to services I offered. I never had quotas set for people's mail accounts for example, so in _theory_, as far as they were concerned, many would see that possibly as "unlimited", but it wasn't as I wouldn't be buying 50 new HDDs just because someone wanted a 200Gb inbox etc
Just my opinion on the term 'unlimited' in this respect.
Considering I don't think I've ever seen a legit claim to an LFS account being compromised before ('hacking' is _not_ breaking into accounts.. don't believe everything the media tells you  ) I find this highly suspicious. Sounds more like a PEBKAC issue and lack of common sense with regards to passwords. I'd strongly suggest choosing friends better in future too, again if this is the case.
Sounds more like those discussions where people start off with: I have a... a.. friend who............
Generally speaking...
Don't know if you can still do it, but a couple of years ago, they introduced a 50p(?)p/m call charge to their "support" line. If you call their free number (assuming it's still active, not called them for a while) and start explaining your issue, they'll tell you it's not their dept. but they'll transfer you.... not costing you to call them.
Doesn't replace lack of grey matter by their script-reading droids, but eases the pain a bit
IE6 and below don't support 24-bit transparent PNG images.. that's my guess as to why. Unfortunately, due to most people being too dim (generally speaking) to find and install a web browser, transparent PNGs aren't ready to be used publicly.. thanks m$!
I'd say that if you only rely on the connection alone, it's normally pretty good. Been with them since they were blueyonder offering a 1Mbit line as their "top of the range" connection.. I often get 600-800k/s downloads from both sites and torrents.
However, god help ya if you rely on their mail platform in particular, but also DNS servers and worst of all, need to contact their "tech support" dept.
I'll never forget them telling me the reason why my modem lights were all out for 3 days (until a tech finally paid a visit and replaced the modem) was because I was running FreeBSD and not windoze.. hahah
Then again tiny showed me why it's so poor about 5 years ago...
It's something I've avoided during my web dev "career" for as long as I possibly could. I hate the thing (combination of no-script and flashblock in Firefox helps immensely.. especially as most flash objects are now embedded in sites by means of javascript to get around IE's "security" of requiring to click the flash object before it'll do anything). So far I've been lucky in only needing to create a fading slideshow and a spinning "globe" of Sierra Leone for clients and some crappy font-replacement stuff for a design agency.
It breaks just about every "rule" of web design too and makes accessibility nothing more than a fantasy.
IMO, flash is nothing but a scum's^h^h^hmarketer's dream.
I "miss" seeing a fair bit of web content, especially gaming sites as very often now, they're flash-only layouts.. something I avoid like a dose of the clap.
Yup, my littlen (11) has been playing on and off over the past couple of years when he's round here and I got him a license end of last year so he could record some of his own PBs although he normally plays offline (needs more practice to join public servers really)
I think he favours the UFR and BF1, but is often driving various cars. Seems to like Kyoto and South City for tracks too
That may be the case, but it's a shame those who know haven't done anything about it since LFS started... but hey! supporting [racist language removed] chars for displays is far _far_ more important than the racing aspect in a race sim
It's fine saying those who know, know.. but if no action has been taken in what, 4-5 years, it's not surprising it's brought up again (and again and again). One may even think that one is talking to a brick wall, so to speak
you owe my boss a keyboard and monitor.. mine's now covered with coffee!
Never, ever ever ever ever ever recommend m$ runtpage. It's like taking a blind person to a peep show for his birthday...................
James.. regarding the spam stuff.. I found using entities and special chars seems to work pretty well. For example; I have design@ for one of my addresses posted on my main site.. never had it spammed, but in the code it has the following format:
Granted, that's not really complex either to decipher, but so far, no spam been received there, yet sales@, info@ and dns@ get hammered daily and have never had addresses / accounts assigned for obvious reasons
Regards,
Ian
