I've used Trillian (both the old one and Astra) for all my IM's and irc. Seems to work.
Also Opera Internet browser has irc built in, plus it does all kinds of other stuff (like works as a media server, streams music, does email...) and is a whole lot better as an internet browser than IE, and miles less annoying than Firefox.
