I just came across True Axis physics engine. Its really amazing and I just cant stop playing one of the demos, provided on the homepage. Just check out the
demos package here http://trueaxis.com/downloads.html and try "Cars". Its freakin' addictive.
I would like to suggest small improvement in getting information about the licence while playing LFS. Typing $licence only gives a small progress bar however another command like $points would write amount of points on your licence for example this way:
[Number of points on licence / Number of points to reach following lincence]
ie: [1023/1300]
Numerous times I wanted to know how many points I have to gain to advance my licence and all the time I had to go to the licence page.
1. Author of the post is writing about the shadow of a car. Car shadows are generated with so called Shadow Mapping (creating a shadow texture and then putting it on scene objects ). It is bery common bug that a single shadow is not visible only on the nearest surface but also on every other surface in the line of light source and a shadowed object. it is very visible for example in Rigs of Rods game also.
A good solution is using stencil shadows however they are more expensive than the first method.
2. Shadows on tracks are precalculated shadows using raytracing technique. Each and every vertex is being analised if it is visible from light source. If it is it is set to white colour if not it is set to dark gray. After applying textures the white to gray colors are interpolated and mixed with textures. The reason shadows dont look very good is that not only each vertex should be precalculated (because there are not always very close to each other) however each texel (pixel on texture) (maybe not each but one per 4 texels) should be checked. This would create a precalculated shadow map for a track and shadows would be a lot more detailed.
Look at the attached pic. The torque split is realised simply by making one of the wheels (1 or 2) smaller or bigger. This makes one axle turn with more/less torque.
I would say NO. I have been learning about neural nets on my university and after programming a few of different types (partialy of course) I can see almost no advantage of such solution over hardprogramming everything in such example as you provided. We know absolutely everything we would like to know about engines and how to simulate them in normal way. Its easier and you have full contol over each aspect of simulation. In neural net you wouldnt be certain about the accuracy of such simulation because learning in most cases is based on probability laws.
Btw I think current AI in LFS is made using neural nets because bots seem to learn how to drive better.
edit:
Neural nets are functioning properly in such situations like analysing something we can not desribe ourselves with mathematic equations. You provided also a good example - it would be extremely hard to hardprogram the 30x32 video screen anyliser to control a car, but is possible with neurals. however you have absolutely no confidence that the net is tought properly and the car wont turn onto oncomming traffic any second.
I personally think that Russians still think post-USSR countires should still be dependant on Moscow.
They stopped the development in our (Poland) country for over 40 years. They commited genocide on tens of thousand of our scientists, lawyers, soldiers and officers, teachers and aristocracy shortly after beggining of war in Katyn (Borus Jelcyn confessed to this crime as well if anyone does think its not true). Thus terminated most of higher class of society, who would have to rebuild our detroyed country and form goverment. they wanted our country dependant on them, and we actually were when pro-russian government was ruling our country. They bacame furious after declarations of democracy of ours and numerous other post-USSR countries who were fed up with russian "liberation".
If it is supposed to be a Nascar style league, the car used should be RWD as real Nascar vehicle. One suggestion from me also: you can use Lfs Tweak to make them 700 bhp like real nascar cars, this would make the race a lot more interesting.
I have a question: is it allowed on STCC (untill next patch, which give NO RESET option on server) to reset cars when fliped or laying on the side? Or it is required to pit in instead of continuing the race?
I dont really understand why people so hate rallyx. i really enjoy slose racing with much wider margin of error you can make. also a bit bump here and there is less painfull than in normal tarmac races. i personaly really enjoy rallyx and I think it is sometimes even more thrilling than racing on tarmac.
I didnt get to know how to do this during this 2 years period because I didnt really need to know. Today I had a need to get a player LFS username and so I asked. Whats the problem?
Ok i tried to search but with other phrases. Sorry for useless thread.
i think it would be a good idea to place some tyres and objects after 1st corner, so that driver who miss the braking point after the straight dont find himself dodging birds and planes in a small while.
I think most of such "catapults" should be covered with Slowing-Down-Devices® until devs make something with the collision system. It is really annoying losing a race because of the physics bug.
This is why I want to race on that servers. However being limited to UF1 and XFG, when in the past when i couldnt buy S2 licence I was driving XFG for long hours, isnt so much fun . Thats why I want to earn some points and race other machines on best servers so far.
