I've used a 5800... Yes, its touchscreen is very sensitive, but the iPhone one is lightyears away. Really.
Plus, you don't have to use any pen, stylus or pointy thing to operate it. Just your fingers. And it's as accurate as it can be.
Then, accelerometer. Your phone has one too. It's useful when you are surfing the internet or showing your photos. I tried, iPhone's faster, and it just feel more natural.
Finally, speed. Even the slowest and oldest iPhone, the 2G, feels fast and nimble, whereas (almost) every Symbian-based phone doesn't. I like a phone to be ready to do what I want, WHEN I want. The camera is fast and takes gorgeous pictures, the games run smoothly, internet is almost as fast as my ADSL line at home... And then, it doesn't squeak when you hold it tight. I've come across many, many iPhones, from the first to the latest generation (actually, I didn't try the iPhone 4, but I'm sure it will be the same), but NONE, even the broken ones, squeaked. My aunt's BRAND NEW 5800 squeaked when I held it in my hand for the first time.
Little things, you may say, for a big price. Well, it depends on how you look at it. I usually DESTROY my phones, I broke my Siemens C35, my C55 had a ruined cover, my Samsung SGH-E700 has always its screen white, my Nokia N70 hasn't got a drop of paint on its back anymore... But my old iPhone 2G is still tiptop, as is my 3Gs. They're my first phones that are still (almost) like new. So, my mother didn't buy a new phone and took mine, and I bought a new one. My family spent LESS overall: we only bought a new phone instead of two. And next year or when it will be, I will buy a new (i)Phone, my mother will give my old 2G to my dad (he finds always himself to take the "latest" technologies, ha ), my mother will take my 3Gs and I will buy a new 4s or 5G or what it will be called. Again, even less expense.
I've seen iPhones/iPods replaced with a lot less then antenna problems, and even an iPod Classic that was dropped in the sea and wouldn't turn itself on. Replaced with a sparkling "new" one. For free. No charge.
And I can't really see Dawesdust trolling on non-Apple forums. Usually it's the other way round. Like here, for instance. A thread about the iPhone and BANG, lots of Apple haters, like [RCG]Boosted.
You COULD, but you had (and still have) to pay, and a lot.
Via WiFi, you don't pay. Simple as that. And read this, an expert says that's an FCC fault, and it's the same with all mobiles.
How can you say they offer less then your "current gadgets" if you haven't tried them?
An opinion is a thing, a fact is another one. Opinion: I don't like the style of iOS. Fact: It's easier to use then, let's say, Symbian or Android.
Opinion: The AppStore is limited to the apps that Apple puts in it. Fact: All Apps work at the best and are SAFE to install.
etc.
Yes, needs are different. My grandfather wouldn't need an iPhone, for sure. But, for example, nor did I before trying one. Nor did my mother. We tried it, we changed idea.
I love technologic gadgets, and with my iPhone I can have, in one device, all my music, lots of pics/videos, lots of games, and lots of books.
My mother, on the other hand, loves its user-friendliness. After one year using my old N70, she couldn't even change its ringtone. Even I struggled to, actually. In a week with the iPhone, she could do EVERYTHING.
I'm not forcing anyone buying an iPhone, but usually most of the people that criticize Apple products (maybe it's not your case) have never even tried one, so that their opinion is based just on clichés.
If you want more...
iPhone 3G 16GB: was 579€
Nokia N96 16GB: was 719€
(and they say that the Apple one is overpriced...)
iOS > Symbian
Thousands of apps to a very small price.
A great navigator (TomTom) - it won't make you miss a real one.
Smart phones are phone that can do... smart things.
I can browse the web wherever I am, use the best e-mail program I've ever seen on a phone, have the best and most user-friendly OS interface, have all my music with me, play a game, read a proper-sized book... Isn't that smart?
This isn't a "technical" thing... it's like on Macs, they aren't "the fastest" computers on paper, but they can do great things. (Actually, I've got an AMD-based Windows PC, and it's fine. I tried my dad's MacBook Pro and I thought that it isn't even on the same planet).
Same with the iPhone. 2MP camera on the 2G/3G, (as I always say) like my old N70? Not a 5+MP camera with Carl Zeiss lenses?
Ok, if you have to print a photo, 3MPs more are better. But I assure you, I've seen a video recorded with (what a coincidence) an N96 -my cousin's ex-boyfriend's- and... oh dear. You could hear the case squeak, and it wasn't as fluent as a video with my 3Gs is, even if it has 2MP less.
What has an iPhone 4 more than an N96? Maybe nothing, hardware-wise (but I higly doubt that the Nokia has 512MB RAM and a 1GHz processor), but it does everything more easily (or, as I would say, better).
Actually, it does.
A friend of mine saw me at school with my (then) new iPhone 2G, said "WOW, I want it", and when it came to Italy (the new 3G), she bought it.
She then came to me and said: "How can I send an MMS?".
I answered: "You can't. You will be able to when the new firmware will come out"
"The new WHAT?"
"Oh, well... when you will be able to upgrade its operating system to a new version"
"Does that mean that I can't send an MMS, now?"
"Yep."
"Oh... And what about sending a picture with BlueTooth?"
"Again, you can't"
"WHAT?"
HOW, I said, HOW can you buy a 599€ phone without knowing what it CAN or it CAN'T do.
Having said that, 95% of the people that I know with an iPhone knows its pros and its cons and didn't buy it JUST because it's an iPhone. If it was for me, it could have been called SsangYong Rodius and I would have bought it as well...
In the lower part of the page, select your device (iPod Touch 1G, 2G or 3G) and the firmware (4.0/8A293), then press download. Or, better, use the direct link under.
+1. Never downloaded anything from iTunes, but I've never lost a single song after a restore. Maybe that's because I keep my music backupped on an external hard disk, not on my mp3 player...
No arguing with that, but surely it hasn't 32GB of memory to put every mp3 in my PC, lots of pics and lots of apps... Without mentioning the 200+ books I have now on it thanks to iBooks. And it still has 8GB to go. And I don't have to use propietary earplugs like I used to do with my old Nokia. And I don't have to live with Symbian. And in 2 and 1/2 years I had 3 major firmware upgrades, and 9 others (minor) upgrades. 12 upgrades in a year and a half. That's what I call support.
I loved my N70, I had 15-20 mp3s and some applications and some pics on my 1GB memory. But it cost 180€ + 20€ of MMC. After two months it was obsolete, and the functions it had when it was brand new are the same it has now. For the equivalent of 280€ I brought home my old iPhone 2G. It now has two years and a half, but it goes like it was new, it's obsolete but it has been updated until a month ago, and has lots of apps, mp3s and pics. Just not as many as in my new 3Gs (8GB<32GB). (Captain Obvious here).
Just to say, there are lots of phones that do what the iPhone does. In this sense they're equal. But, for me, the iPhone is more equal than the others xD
iSpazio's Test
Sorry, it's in Italian, but it shows that it doesn't really short. I know, it's the wrong hand, but if it does it with the left one, it will do it also with the right one.
Even if you physically short the antennas with a key, as in this video (again, sorry for the Italian) it drop 3/4 bars, but it stays connected. And it's with Wind, one of the worst carriers we have in Italy. With Vodafone or TIM it would have been for sure better.
I won't buy it, just to make things clear. I'm perfectly well with my "old" 3Gs and iOS 4.
Just, don't believe Apple haters always like they are God. As I proved in one of my earlier posts, they found every time some faults, and usually are proven wrong.
Display with yellow patches? It will be perfect in a week.
Antennas shorting? Just don't hold it from the bottom. If you hold it naturally, you won't touch both antennas, or at least not too much.
I'm totally with dawesdust here. Haters gonna hate.
And if you are wondering, I'm not a fanboy. I just fell in love with a phone which is easy to use (more than any other phone at least), gorgeous to look at (you can't say that of all the new iPhone-killers, can you? But that's just my opinion...) and with the best touchscreen from the lot.
The N95 has its antenna on top of the camera part, so you would have to hold it OVER the camera. If you do that with my old N70, from 7 bars it goes right to 2.
On the other hand, the antenna on the iPhone is in the lower part of the device. With my 3Gs, though, I have to hold it with my left hand and very tight. Like that, it goes from 5 bars to 1, but it still can send and receive texts and calls.
Yes and no. They don't hold it THAT far down, and holding it a lil' bit upper, it doesn't lose bars.
I had an original iPhone for a year and a half, and then an iPhone 3Gs for almost a year. I found out actually today that holding it like that has influence on its signal. So, in more than two years, I haven't lost signal because of how I was holding the phone.
The problem may be stronger on iPhone 4s, but I hardly believe that it will lose all bars just holding it, even in the States where (matter of fact) you have far less signal strength.
No, it isn't.
In France it's 629€ for the 16GB and 739 for the 32GB. In Germany I strongly think it will be the same.
@Fastwalker: iSpazio, the best Italian blog on the iPhone, has tried and tried and tried, and came to a conclusion. It was a false alarm. Every mobile phone has this problem. Even my old Nokia N70 does this (only, by holding it in the upper section, where it has the antenna).
Yeah, I have lots of pockets to carry around a device that's almost as big as an iPhone AND another phone. Right.
Then, on topic, they aren't idiots. If you hold ANY iPhone (or, better, ANY phone) like that, it loses signal. My mother's 2G does it, my 3Gs does it. And they haven't dropped a phonecall, once.
So, all this stuff is just bollocks. If you hold it from the bottom, it is uncomfortable and it loses signal. If you hold it a little bit higher, it's natural and comfortable and it doesn't lose signal.
Your choice.
Stop it.
It's always like this, when it comes out a new Apple product.
iPhone 2G
"omg, it doesn't have the unit converter blablablablabla".
In two months they sold a million of these.
iPhone 3G
"omg, I've heard that the white one's case cracks".
(I've seen only an iPhone with cracks on the back, because it was DROPPED)
They sold one million in three days.
iPhone 3Gs
"omg the battery is so small you can't even turn it on, and you can cook an egg on the back"
Again, a million in three days.
Now, all of those who bought an iPhone were fanboyz? I don't think so.
All of them were trying to help Apple in their plan (take over the world)?
If they sold 50,000,000 units with 3 (three) models (i.e. the original 2G, the 3G and the 3Gs), their phones aren't that bad. Full stop.
Now we have the same old story. New iPhone comes out, it has problems (ok, the antenna one IS a problem. Why are you moaning for the screen's glue that isn't set? Now some have those yellowish patches, in a week they won't), Apple will try to stop it losing signal with a software upgrade.
If they fail, they'll pick up any phone with that problem and give you a new sparkling one without problems, as always.
I had an iPhone 2G: when I used it, it felt smooth, fast and better than anything else.
After a year and a half, I bought a 3Gs, it still feels smooth, faster, and better than anything else. So, you can say, no improvements, it's the same.
If I put my old 2G (now my mother's) and my 3Gs together and try to do the same things, the 2G is 1-2 seconds slower than my 3Gs in normal use, if you play games it's nowhere near.
My mate's 3G can be put somewhere in the middle, but nearer the 2G.
So, a faster processor and more ram, it DOES make a difference, even on the iDevices xD
BTW, I just tried to create a playlist on my iPhone (it still has iPhone OS 3.1.3). Yes, you can create an On-The-Go playlist, but only one at a time. If you want to create another one, you have to erase the first one or create one with iTunes on your Mac/PC. Now with iOS 4, no more iTunes!
To the creator of the topic: FROM THE BEGINNING Apple has stated that some features weren't to be going on the 3G, like multitasking, AND wallpapers. When the jailbreak will come out, you will be able to have both, though.
What I want you to remind, is that the iPhone 3G is a 2 year old phone. Nokia stops giving older phones software updates in less than 6 months, and it's more that can be said of Motorola, Samsung etc.
Then, if it slowed down your iPhone, try restoring, not upgrading. Be sure to make a manual backup (iTunes -> Left side of the screen, right-click your device -> Backup).
If you won't be losing anything, it's even better to configure it as a new iPhone.
Then, if you don't like how Apple does this things, it's only your fault. When I bought my $399 iPhone 2G 8GB with iPhone OS 1.1.4, I knew perfectly well what it had, what it didn't have, and that it would be upgraded to a new version next year. Same with my 699€ 3Gs.
I can't have iMovie. Well, my phone is a year old, and I know it CAN'T hardware-wise. Just take it like it is.
