The X2 7850 looks like a good buy plus its a BE.
What an annoying problem has me stumped, might be just a bad driver set or maybe the ati chipset just isn't playing nice with the nvidia drivers?

The only other thing I can think of is motherboard drivers, particularly the pcie drivers.
You could also look for bios updates for the card from the manufacture.
Btw if you returned the card you should be able to get the 5830 or even the 5850 not the slower 5770 you mentioned.

I know Gigabyte offer some type of monitoring software for their boards that shows the voltage on the 12volt rail, you could run a stress test and see if that drops.
I use furmark for stress testing.

Rather odd mafia 2 seems to run well but not lfs, I do agree with "Forbin" that your psu is a bit low.
