Gad, I am looking forward to the day when starts in LFS consist of more than just flooring it in the knowledge that the clutch will be dropped automatically when the lights turn green. Imagine how much better the starts will be if you have to react to the lights and use proper clutch and throttle control to get off the line. Jump start penalties, stalled cars, cars bogging down, it will really mix things up.

Need more information.

What are your system specs - CPU, RAM, video card?

What are your video card driver settings - anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering?

What are your LFS settings - screen resolution, level of detail, texture size, hardware vertex shading etc.?

One thing I don't like about reversed grids is that there's no incentive to qualify well. There's nothing to stop otherwise fast players who could qualify well if they wanted to from sandbagging and intentionally driving slow laps just to get to the front of the grid.
S2: One Year Old on June 24

I was browsing through the old news releases at the main LFS site and noticed that S2 was released on June 24, 2005. That means it will be one year old this coming Saturday. Wow, where has all the time gone? Anyway, congrats to the devs and many happy returns!

I actually quite like the idea of being able to customize the cars within certain limits. Body kits and all the other ricer add-ons I can do without but the option to install an aero package, racing suspension package, turbo/supercharger kit or brake package to the stock models appeals to me. There are some obvious gameplay balance issues that would need to be addressed though and it may be necessary for penalties to be assessed against the car when a package is added. For example, adding additional ballast weight or detuning the engine performance. These would all need to be extensively gameplay balanced to ensure that there are no clearly fastest configurations while still allowing people to customize the cars to their own preferred driving style. The idea may not be workable or practicable given the dev's limited resources though.

The steering in real cars naturally tends to self-center due to forces acting on the wheels. In LFS, when using a force feedback wheel these self-centering forces move the steering wheel back towards its center position. However, for some reason (and AndroidXP may be correct that it is a limitation of the technology), the wheel slightly overshoots the center and ends up steering slightly in the opposite direction. Self-centering forces then cause the wheel to move back towards the center in the other direction which results in another overshoot and so on. The wheel ends up oscillating around the center steering position.

These self-centering forces can be affected by such things such as toe-in, camber and especially caster.

I'm looking forward to the reworked Kyoto Ring with new layouts. It's my favourite track in terms of atmosphere and has several of my favourite corners and complexes. I'm not keen on the banked oval sections though and hope some of the new layouts skip the oval altogether.

Since I started using a clutch pedal and full manual shifting with heel and toe a few weeks ago, I've noticed some quirks and deficiencies in the clutch, drivetrain and engine modeling which I hope are addressed in the next patch. I would particularly like to see improvements in the engine, drivetrain and clutch damage modeling so that poor technique and/or mistakes have a more detrimental effect. Brake fade would also be a nice enhancement. However, I realise that these improvements would not be seen or appreciated by everyone since they would only affect those who run relatively long races using manual shifting so dev resources may be better spent on other areas.

The sound engine is probably the area that needs the most work -- or rather, it's the area that people complain about the most and tends to be the first thing people new to LFS comment on. Improving the sounds may broaden the appeal to new users.

I hope that after S3 is released, the devs consider licensing the engine to third-party developers and/or develop and release their own add-on content. I'd be happy to buy add-ons.

I use a Logitech DFP and find that the smoothness of the force feedback depends on the degrees of rotation specified in the profiler and the degrees of wheel turn specified in LFS. The larger the rotation, the smoother the feedback. For example, the feedback at 720/720 feels smoother than at 360/360. I personally feel the feedback at 360/360 to be a bit 'notchy' and 720/720 too 'floaty', so I have mine set at 540/540.

Quote from steve :To bad that the feeling of "understeer" is not programmed into the effects.

Are any 'effects' programmed into the LFS FF? My understanding is that the FF is generated directly from the forces in the underlying physics model and does not use canned effects that are triggered once the car enters into a certain state.

Quote from Blowtus :What fun is that? No need to be shy...

Yeah, seriously, speak up. One of the main benefits of having these staged releases is that the users get to voice concerns and bring issues to the dev's attention and potentially help to make LFS better. I would hope that the devs welcome well-founded, constructive criticism, especially when it comes from subject matter experts.

I use the autoclutch since I don't have a third pedal to use for the clutch. However, I have turned off autoblip on up and down shifts. With these off, I find that flat shifting in some cars can damage the engine within a handful of laps. With autoblip on, I can flat shift in all cars til the cows come home without suffering any damage.

Quote from mkinnov8 :Totally agreed there, (though i have a soft spot for what NKp could be), but I read on the FILSCA site that they only accept games in thier finished state.

If this is true then neither rFactor and its various mods nor netKar PRO should be eligible to be used in FILSCA races. Yet the FILSCA website is full of race reports where rFactor features prominently.

For onboard cams, define a custom view in the Options | View menu.

For trackside cams, use Shift-U to move the camera position. The camera can be set to follow the car or it can be fixed in place.

I owned rFactor for 8 months and tried hard to appreciate it. In the end, I gave up on it and gave the license away.

The graphics in rFactor are pretty good, especially the amount of detail in several of the ISI-created tracks. However, all that eye-candy comes at a cost: you need a powerful system to run it at decent framerates. In LFS, I generally get 100-120 fps running at full detail, 1280x960x32, 4xAA and 8xAF. In rFactor, I had to scale the in-game graphics settings back and turn down AA and AF to get 30-35 fps. If the framerate is any lower, the game and controller response becomes so laggy that it's more or less unplayable.

Physics are hard to judge. It seems very good in places and yet things like controller lag, mediocre and canned force feedback, limited steering lock, steering ratios and so on get in the way.

User-created mods are largely a waste of time. Even 8 months after release, there are only a handful of good quality mods.

But what really killed it for me was multiplayer. Trying to find an online game was an exercise in frustration. There are so many different versions of the various car and track mods that even finding a server that I was able to join without getting a version mismatch error was a hit and miss affair.

So, I gave up.

Quote from ORION :Maybe this helps you

Thanks ORION, I love that setup! I used to dislike the FZ50 due to the way it handled but with your setup I can throw it around the track with confidence, all with a big grin on my face. Feels great!

Interesting article over at SimHQ (http://www.simhq.com/_all/all_019l.html). SimHQ has been covering the E3 expo in Los Angeles and had a discussion with Logitech about their new G25 wheel. According to the article:

"After a brief discussion on the pricing and release date on the wheel with Gaming PR Rep Pamela McCracken, I was directed into a long and fascinating discussion with Ruben Mookerjee, Logitech's Director of Marketing. As luck would have it for our hobby, Ruben is a club racer from England, an avid fan of both real and simulated motorsports (specifically, Live For Speed). It was truly gratifying to know that Logitech has someone so passionate about cars, racing and race sims on the team that's developing this new product."

However, the Logitech booth was apparently running rFactor. I wonder if there's an opportunity for LFS to be showcased alongside the latest offerings from Logitech at future events?

Licenses can be bought at http://www.liveforspeed.net They are not sold through retail outlets.

The damage modeling in the current version of the full game is the same as in the demo. Improved damage modeling is in the developer's to do list but no timeframe has been given.

Quote from WGooden :Well I have t4 installed and I just noticed this strange thing, when I'm in the tv view I just see the drivers helmet, I've only noticed this in the uf1 aswell.

I'm running T5 and can't duplicate your problem. UF1 without roof on Aston Cadet and my driver model is all there. Are you using a non-default suit texture?

Is anyone still playing this? I checked the multiplayer lobby tonight; 9:30pm, Thursday night, Pacific coast timezone. There were only a couple of people online and both were on a closed server. So I joined a public server and spent about 35-40 minutes turning laps all by myself. No one joined in that entire time. The empty grandstands on either side of the start-finish straight seemed sadly apt.

Now I remember why I don't like online gaming forums. They have a way of sucking all the enjoyment out of a game.

Those are valid criticisms but you seem to be taking a 'glass half empty' approach. If you're not able to enjoy LFS in its current state my suggestion would be to play something else until LFS is in a state more to your liking. Life's too short to get upset by things that are meant to be a pleasant diversion.
