My flame jacket is on, and I'm gonna say that I quite like it. It has it's problems (like the strange behaviour on some of the kerbs and at low speed still...and what the hell is with the crash physics?!) but it does actually feel fairly real. LFS is great and very realistic, but it doesn't really give me the same feeling I get when racing real cars or karts. By that I mean that it can be very unpredictable and when you try braking a little later or try a different line you just fly off the road. This is honestly fairly unrealistic and the only bad thing about LFS. I don't know why it's like it is...it's just a 'feeling'. For some reason GTR2 seems to allow a rhythm a lot more easily. I can apply tactics I apply IRL like perhaps I'll try braking here next time or....maybe if I turn in here I can get a faster exit.

As I said.....it's not perfect, but there are lots of elements I like.

Yup, sounds like axel tramp to me. If you wanna solve the problem you can get panard rods which brace the axels longitudnally and stop the suspension moving backwards and forwards. Getting solid bushes may also stop it too as I'd imagine in your case you'll have the original rubber suspension bushes which are designed to filter out some of the smaller vibrations. They allow quite a lot of unwanted movement in high powered cars though so either getting poly bushes or just moving to metal bushes will reduce the tramping a lot

I know from a friend of mine that the Mercedes engine will do over 20k easily. It's just the endurance that's the problem.

It's just south of Leicester and is where Top Gear used to film before the new format and where Fifth Gear still film. It's also the location for the cover shot of this months EVO magazine and is used by a lot of car companies for testing as it's the longest publicly available runway in the UK at 2 miles. They have a great collection of ex military aircraft too and they run driving days under the brand 'Big Thunder'.

Sounds promising then! You got much planned for next year? :P I'll be taking a more active roll cause I'll be 3rd year next year and I have a few ideas I want to test on the older cars. We're only an hour away from Brunty, so it's quite easy for us to go and test providing we have the time!

We made our bodywork on our own too. Myself and another guy spent a couple of weeks learning how to beat ally panels to make the moulds for the fiberglass. We've learnt a lot and should be able to make some pretty sexy stuff next year. The sidepods were finished an hour before the team left though :P We're not very good at getting things done early!

Quote from Tege :Like ArosaMike said all teams have the same budget.

Helsinki Polytechics team is still probably one of the smallest. Used to be under ten guys and the succeeded good back then too. About the design I think they still use the School of Art in Helsinki to do the design. The reason they are good is that they have great partners and great guys working on the car. For example the ECU is made by one guy (not in the actual team though).

I know few of the guys who used to be on the team and actually I made some little testing for the team with lfs couple of years ago.

Awesome....yeah I like the Helsinki car because I think generally most of it is done by the team. The way I understand it, ETS (Canada) never did so well with there cars because half of the thing was outsourced so they only really acted as assembly. The judges do take into consideration whether you make it or not. We very much make everything. Sadly the carbon tub never made it a few season back because they ran out of carbon fibre Next year should be fun though. The whole dynamic of the competion is changing significantly now as it's getting more press and bigger companies are getting involved. We've been caught with our pants down a bit and we need to try and get a big title sponsor on board. No idea who, but we're going to try. Next years car should have some good innovations on too. I'll be doing one

Just one bit of advice from me. Try moving your steering wheel higher up or your seat lower down! It's practically in your lap in those pictures so no wonder the angle of your wrists is so crazy. The steering wheel ideally needs to be positioned so your hands are about the same level as your shoulders when at rest (so at 9-3). I think this web page will explain it all rather well http://e30m3performance.com/my ... tion/driving_position.htm

Just found this awesome video made by Helsinki:

I'd forgotten that it's the same Uni that made the Raceabout that's in LFS :P No wonder they have such a good Formula Student team!

Another good video here

Well...the Canadians amongst you should be pleased to hear that the 'ugly' Toronto car won the event again! Thankfully it's not soley based on who makes the fastest and most technically advanced car but a mixture of the following:

Design - They judges look for innovation and most importantly justification of the design. If a team just turned up with some hand built 600cc V10 that revved to 16,000rpm (not entirely unfeasible....a US team built a 610cc V8 a few years back....sadly they forgot that the car had to start itself and didn't install a starter motor!) if they couldn't say what the advantages of doing it were. Whist cars like the RedBull sponsored Gratz car and the Helsinki car look awesome, they may not have justified the design very well.

Cost - This is a bit of a wierd one. It only really takes into account the amount of money you actually spend....so if companies give you stuff for free (which is usually what happens) then it's quite easy to stay within the suggested maximum spend which is something like £15,000. In reality even our car which has a very small budget compared to most would probably cost over £50,000 if you were to pay for everything. Something like the Gratz car which had a cast rear diff and gearbox, a carbon fibre tub and incredibly well machined suspension components may be upwards of £250,000 to £500,000!

Presentation - A presentation that the team gives about the car

Dynamic Events:

Acceleration - Speaks for itself!

Skidpan - The fastest time to do a figure of eight twice

Autocross - Fastest time

Endurance - 11 laps split between two drivers. You get a massive number of points for just finishing this, and then obviously more the higher up the times you finish.

There's no racing in it at all, and the circuit is very resitictive. A shame for some of the better cars, but certainly a good thing for some of the slightly less well built cars.

Cool skin Knight_Atack Glad I was of some inspiration. I'll post a few more pictures up later so you have some better reference

I'm in my Formula Student team (read MRT cars but from other Unis) and went along to competion for the endurance day yesterday. As I'm only a 2nd year I haven't had an aweful lot to do with the car and took the option to just observe again this year as I felt I'd just get in the way (as it turned out, there were too many people already!). It also gave me a chance to practice more motorsport photography, and as the barriers and marshalls are fairly relaxed and tend to assume that if you sitting there with a huge lense that you're mature enough not to be an idiot and get too close, it's possible to get into some good positions that would normally be closed off in normal motorsport.

So....I've only had a chance to look at the 300+ photos I took and edit a few, so here they are so far:

This is Helsinki's (Finland) car is sponspored rather obviously by Audi. They probably have one of the biggest budgets and it shows with adjustable traction control, a really excellent turbo, awesome bodywork and a very professional pit area. As you can tell I loved it!

Luleå had this really nicely painted helmet:

And talking of helmets:

Trust the 'crazy' Dutch to have cool air intakes on their car (Eindhoven Uni):

One of the many German teams:

Teams came from as far as Toronto and Delhi:

The Chalmers (Sweden) car was perhaps the fastest there...:

...largely due to this little baby strapped to the top of the engine....a Superchager

What a shame it didn't finish the endurance

This car was perhaps the meanest looking one of the day. It was incredibly quick too until the exhaust fell off it! It sounded great, but sadly got pulled in because of it!

I'll post some more tomorrow Took some good ones of the planes in the background too, but they're for another thread

What's the deal with payment on Saturday...will they take cheques or is it cash or credit/debit card only?

In that situation I wouldn't hit them though as I wouldn't make a move unless I know I'll make it. If they leave me no space and I'm right along side them....then it's their fault.

Well at the end of the day IMO, you're only gonna win races by being agressive and trying to overtake. The definition of a good race to me is being in a battle with someone where I overtake them, then they overtake me, then I overtake them again and so on. If they want to behave like a retard and try and hold on round the outside then that's their problem if they don't have the skill for it. It aint my fault if they crash when I stick it up the inside and personally it's a huge advantage for me cause I don't have anyone behind anymore. It sounds arrogant I know, but no one I know won a race through being nice and considerate! If I can muscle my way past I will. I'm not into nudging people off the track or using them as a brake, but if the person turns in on me and crashes....it's their fault not mine!

Quote from thisnameistaken :Doesn't it look really obvious from those onboard stills that Montoya wasn't close enough? I know LFS isn't F1, but I would've backed out of that before the corner.

Well mate....I guess you must never overtake anyone! That's as close as you're gonna get! He was 3/4s of the way along Rosbergs car!

Quote from scurrg :Montoya lost control and steered into Rosberg while trying to regain control.

The only reason montoya lost control was because Rosberg had just slammed into the side of him!

I'm really not understanding this thread now. People are arguing against the most text book overtaking move in racing...diving up the inside. There is frankly no other way to safely and regularly overtake another driver. You can occassionaly go round the outside, but it's super risky as you're relying on the guy on your inside not understeering into you. I just don't understand how anyone can say that going up somones inside is dangerous and that the person on the outside shouldn't yeild. It's nuts. You go away and ask any racer his opinion on what you're writing and they'll laugh in your face! There would be no race without it!

I tell you....I really can't figure people out somtimes. Why would someone be sad enough to spend their time follwing someone else like that?! I'm guessing there must be cobwebs in the underwear department or something but my god must they be desparate to think they can chat someone up on a games server! LOL TBH, just be glad it's all anonymous and is not happening in real life, but even so, it's damn annoying to have your racing ruind by some tosser. Definitely save the replay and send it to someone. It's a shame to hear that Tiny hardly races now. I used to spend ages on the dSRC servers and raced her a number of times. I remember someone getting banned then though for inappropriate comments!

Just to lighten things up a bit though.....this thread is an ideal opportunity for this picture which made me laugh :P

Quote from keiran :Yea you'll be fine. I gather the people who will be wearing rib protectors are just trying to minimize the sore ribs you can get if your too small for the seat :P One thing I hate about hire karts is the seats are always too big for me so I move about in the seat and being made from plastic it doesn't help :P

Keiran

Yeah...since I slimmed down to the minimum weight I started to suffer really badly from a bruised back more than anything. For about 3 months I had this huge lump on the bottom of my spine purely from the pouding it was getting in the seats. The seats are just about the right size with my rib protector on now.

Go get yourself a full dry suit from Hein Gericke. £30 and it's unimeasurably better than the crap Sparco Condom thing. Keeps you tosty warm and completely dry. If it's warm and wet, you'll just dry off fairly quickly :P

Incidently...I'll be attemting to be cool karter of the day with my black Red Bull overalls, and blue iridium visor :P

I just wear a pair of thin trousers under the suit and up until recently a T-shirt. Got a Sparco Coolmax long sleeve T-shirt now which is a high evaporation material and it works great. Just make sure you wear a decent pair of trainers. Don't anyone go turning up in boots or fashion shoes :P LOL

LOL. Well.....each to their own! He repeatedly told me the he honestly didn't spin Gabriele Tarquini off once

I can't honestly believe a professional karter said they would risk hospitalising themselves or another driver for an position, but yes, karting is fairly aggressive. It doesn't mean you ram the other person. I think this boils down to the whole point Will was trying to make. For some reason people seem to confuse aggressive overtaking with trying to ram someone off the road. IMO, there's absolutely nothing wrong with forcing someone wide with an agressive maneuver. People are so unwilling to yield though that for some reason they'd rather crash than just let the person get on with things and try and overtake. A slight nudge or tap is not an intentional attempt to make someone crash. If you're rubbing doors through a corner that's just close racing. Will was trying to make the point in the first place that you have to be aggressive to make a move stick. There is no point in fannying around for 3 laps tentitavely putting a wheel infront into a hairpin! It's all about going balls out and doing what I did yesterday at Aston Club Rev and going round the outside of someone under braking

I've attatched said overtaking meneuver for your veiwing pleasure :P
