That was my point
Most people viewing the sample images wouldn't have resized them to fit the screen, thus the 800x600 image still looks as though it contains as much detail as the 1600x1200 image, yet it only contains a quarter.
I'm not arguing about which looks better and i'm not tying to pick a fight with you Glyphon. I admire the fact that you have provided sample images to back up your claims. My only concern was that there may be a bias inherent in the way the samples were presented.
Firstly, i'm not an oval racer, but like Becky said, i'll have a go occasionally for a change of technique. However, I can't understand the almost instantaneous uproar that comes from track racers when there is a request for another oval.
As quoted above, LFS is a 'RACING' simulator. Now I know it can probably never accommodate all genres of racing (anyone for a mod ?), but it should accommodate the most popular types of european and american racing (IMHO). Track racers have a few tracks and configs to choose from, oval racers have one, so it would already appear a little biased if you're a major fan of oval racing.
I just laughed to myself at some of the comments here earlier ... imagine what would have originally been said if/when someone suggested adding a car park to LFS. Oh the uproar "a what ?", "WTF", "useless" etc etc etc Yet, we have them.
I think the idea of an extreme test facility is a valid one, incorporating a high speed banked circular track, drag strip, brake test area, skid pan, multiple karting track configs inside for the MRT etc
Now where this goes on the list of priorities is not for us to decide, that will be decided by the devs.
That may be true, but it's slightly misleading when one picture is half the size of the other. Double the size of the 800x600 image and then compare them. I think thats what Blowtus was trying to say
It WAS decent, but then the force feedback mechanism started slipping. I run 100% FFB in the driver and only 40% in LFS so i didn't think I was stressing it too much
I had to disconnect the motor from the system and remove the power to it. Now I have no 'feel' to the wheel at all and i'm having difficulty getting used to it, I didn't realise I drove relying on tactile input so much.
So if you want a second hobby repairing your wheel, get the RGT, but if you just want to race, pick something else
Just a small glitch I noticed, which i'm not sure is specific to the test versions or not.
When altering the button opacity in the interface options, it affects the opacity of the colour sliders in both the interface screen and the display screen.
What are peoples opinions of changing the type of event ?
Personally, this is first and foremost an LFS event, therefore it's safe to assume that most, if not all of those that would attend will be avid drivers / racers / motorsport fans.
I understand that the intention of the event is to bring LFSers together socially, but if you remove the 'common ground' of racing I fear there will be fewer wanting to attend.
I'm not saying this has to be a karting event, but something motorsport related. Although, TBH, any other corporate motorsport event is probably prohibitively expensive, so it'll end up being karting anyway.
Perhaps it's time for a poll on which types of events people would prefer ?
The braking guide -
If I was to brake in the manner shown in that guide (remebering i'm not the lightest of people), everyone would know my braking point on the first corner, as the rear axle would be left lying there from when it was ripped unceremoniously from the kart. Then, to rub salt into my wounds, everyone would know what line I was taking to the apex of the first corner as the arse end of my kart leaves scrape marks on the tarmac
I don't think there's much point in me going to bed, i'm just too bloody excited
So if i'm missing tomorrow, you'll know I tried to stay up all night and then finally fell asleep at 7:30am
I'm still on the scrounge for anyone with recording equipment for some in-kart footage. I'll bring the bullet cam and stuff down with me anyway just in case, you never know who might get bored of holding the camera track side and is willing to risk it in a kart
I think at this stage it's only fair that I reveal my real name (if I haven't done it before), so it's ... Decibella ! Umm, no, wrong thread ... it's Neil.
That make 2 of us then ! Perhaps we'll have to rename the team
Sorry to hear you can't make it Smax, I was looking forward to putting a face to the name.
I'd still quite like to get some in-kart footage using the bullet cam I have, but my video camera has no video in. Does anyone have a cam that we could use for the purpose ?
I thought my wheel had broken for about 5 minutes before I suddenly had one of those light bulb moments ..... Bike Engine !!!!
Seriously though, i've just come off one of the Odd Combo Club servers driving the MRT around SO and Tristan hit the nail on the head - ultra smooth input is the key. Don't try and correct a slide like any other car, it'll basically tank slap you, it's really not something you can 'grab' or 'wrestle' around the track.
But, it's great fun once you learn some of the nuances (and believe me, i'm still learning )
I've had a few problems with it to be honest...
I bought it in March and by April the buttons on the paddle shifters went haywire, double downshifting etc, I replaced them with some new ones from Maplin and all was well for another week or so.
Then, the paddles themsleves fractured by the pivots. I super glued them back together and added a reinforcement strip which worked well. They lasted for at least 2 weeks, until the paddles again fractured but now right where they depress the shift switches inside.
I tried the same repair technique, but due to the way the mechanism works you need some 'give', which i'd lost by reinforcing them.
Getting totally peed off with it, I decided to do the job properly and fitted a miniature micro switch directly behind each shift paddle. This has been working great for about 6 weeks now and the feel is better too, more accurate.
Apart from that, the analogue paddles on the wheel are nice for clutch and handbrake. I've never had a problem with the pedals (although I greased those up as soon as I had it) and the wheel is very rigid as it's mounted with roller bearings.
In all, a nice wheel let down by some badly designed, cheeply made shifters !
That was it ! I had the tester crash on me once (because I restarted LFS while the tester was running) and hadn't rebooted. It was obvious in hindsight DOH illepall Thanks sdether.
The only thing that concerned me was that LFS started to stutter quite badly once the communication was working (the tester was pulling 99% cpu).
If you have a remedy for this or any suggestions, please let me know, otherwise i'm going to break out my VB installation and start playing

I've set outgauge in the lfs.cgf to IP 127.0.0.1 on port 30003 and i've confirmed it's active using netstat -a.
I can usually persevere with this kind of stuff and get it working, but i'm stumped this time
I can get the tester app to work with Insim data, but I get nothing using the Outgauge form tester. Do I have to set anything in the LFS cfg.txt for outgauge, or is it handled through Insim (which I assumed) ?
If I need to edit the cfg.txt file, what are the settings ?
I know some of the skill in obtaining a fast lap/race is in the car setup, but it would be very interesting to have a server option whereby the RACE_S setup had to be used.
One for the future maybe ?
(if it's not already possible and i'm talking out my posterior)
If you're still willing to be teammates Tim, i'll gladly put the extra £30 in too, so at least we have another team position filled. If there is a sudden rush at the end, then we'll just revert back to a 3 person team.
