Quote from Keling :AC's gearbox damage develops at a ridiculously high rate. Is there any real life test on how quickly one can kill a gear by grinding it, even if you could make the synchro fail? I'm fairly sure the amount of time I've spent grinding the box on an old car I used to drive is not on the same order of magnitude compared to the time it takes to kill the whole box in AC, and it works just fine.

Definitely agree with this. Of course I've never missed 3 shifts on a hot lap in a real version of any of these cars. One thing is that maybe since in a real transmission you're going to be limited by how much force you can put into a "bad shift" but you're allowed to move the shifter all the way on something like a G25, and maybe that creates a lot more simulated damage.... I don't know, just probably making up crap at this point but I do agree it's terrible unforgiving, and some cars more than others.

Thanks. Tested on a different computer and got much less lag. Looks like some issue on my part rather than AC's code.

Thumbs up

There's no way AC is doing any proper simulation/estimation of dog damage based on how much force is being applied to the structure.

A sim gated shifter only provides a few digital controller buttons, one for each gear. There's no analog input for the game code to calculate how far the engaged gear selector rod should move or how much axial force is present. It's either fully in or not.

Even if we ignore the lack of input AC's gearbox model just doesn't make sense. When you fail to engage a gear there's appears to be no synchro and the box always grind. When you do get a successful shift gearbox input is rev matched almost instantly as if it carries no rotational inertia. When damage happens it even applies to the whole box. There's no damage counter per gear/dog.

Edit: Playing a grinding noise might make sense because you can't get feedback from the shifter. The audio effect makes it easier to tell you didn't get into gear.

Probably right, but I don't know what it's trying to do for sure.

Yes I understand this, that was the foundation of my previous unlikely hypothesis about what could've been happening.

No there is no damage per cog obviously, but older cars cannot be shifted as quickly which lends itself to the fact that there could be more attempted complexity than there appears to be... Or, it could be as simple as "car x and only change gears at Y speed". Maybe a mod maker would have more insight, I've not researched this at all. Just "thinking out loud" so feel free to ignore it Tongue

Dont really play much AC but taht video was genius and on further inspection i found this in his uploads, just lmao Smile

AC has very rudimentary gearbox and drivetrain simulation at the moment, the Dev's are aware of that. I think at some point they had initiative to change it, but then along came the Porsche licence.

This is all that's behind ACs current gearbox engagement and damage model:
Quote :
[GEARBOX]
CHANGE_UP_TIME=260 ; change up time in milliseconds
CHANGE_DN_TIME=270 ; change down time in milliseconds
AUTO_CUTOFF_TIME=260 ; Auto cutoff time for upshifts in milliseconds, 0 to disable
SUPPORTS_SHIFTER=1 ; 1=Car supports shifter, 0=car supports only paddles
VALID_SHIFT_RPM_WINDOW=800 ;range window additional to the precise rev matching rpm that permits gear engage.
CONTROLS_WINDOW_GAIN=0.4 ;multiplayer for gas, brake, clutch pedals that permits gear engage on different rev matching rpm. the lower the more difficult.
INERTIA=0.022 ; gearbox inertia. default values to 0.02 if not set

[CLUTCH]
MAX_TORQUE=300

[DAMAGE]
RPM_WINDOW_K=100

I bought AC just because wanted to experience Nordschleife. Nah, that track wasnt included in the main package of 30€ so I tested some rounds at Spa, but just didnt got excited of it, and forgot it for a while.

Somewhat a week ago I bought the additional pack with Nordschleife, and THAT was exciting. I have had superfun times on Track Day servers at the tourist course. (then of course had to buy all extra packs to have all vintage cars...I love to drive the tuned Escort 1600 around that track)

I wouldn't laugh to AC, its just different like all other sims, it has its pros and cons. And its true it has lot to learn from LFS.

(While I had to install Steam, I also decided to test demo versions of Rfactor and Rfactor2, they also felt very weird, like AC felt at first feel. Now I insalled also free version of RaceRoom Racing... but I dont want to go offtopic more than that Big grin)
btw found a copy of GP Legends from internet, it works in Win 10 Big grin
I was curious to see if the old version Nordschleife (I mean the 22.8km long without curbs) is more attractive...holy cats, with all respect of that masterpiece...have to say that it looked horrible now 19 years after its release Big grin
Looking for AC servers not running on Nordschleife is like looking for LFS servers that are not cruise Frown
Quote from P1lot :Looking for AC servers not running on Nordschleife is like looking for LFS servers that are not cruise Frown

I understand...actually there are some GT2/GT3 servers...but what I have read several forums about online activity of racing simulators, I have understood that iRacing is only sim that has much activity in online racing. All others are "dead" in many opinions that I read... But yes, there are too many empty servers in AC...I think ppl nowadays just like to hang around on parking places...why not, its social Big grin

oh lol, witten this, I found one AC server running Blackwood (!) and Lotus sport cars with 5 racers Big grin
Im sorry for asking this on page 177 of this thread, but I would like to know: Does anyone have complained about a serious graphic bug in AC - when you follow other car in curve, the prespective of the car in front of you, is in many cases, totally ****ed up.

For example when I follow F40 in Nordschleife, that Ferrari looks like its negative-drifting all curves, and that looks really ugly, like the Ferrari had a serious damage in control arm (but it doesnt).
seems like you have FOV set up wrong. Can't remember what I have set mine to (not at home), but there are plenty of guides to do that according to your screen size and distance.
No, I know what he's talking about - it like the car's model has been rotated off the centre-line so that it appears to 'crab' down the road. I've seen it in both AC and PCars.

exactly, and that is something wich works 100% perfect in LFS, so was very disappointed to find such phenomen in a game wich graphics has been praised
In single-player or online?

If I understand the description correctly that's likely caused by the netcode failing to do consistent lag compensation on car body's rotation. But this would only happen online.

Wow you are right! In single player the cars are drawn perfect, so the problem must be like you explained.
just thought, maybe we could do like some kind of racing/meeting in AC, on any server, maybe B2R, i think they have one there. With GT3 cars or DTM race, im up for anything, main goal is to have fun!
question is, at what time? today?

Quote from bishtop :I think it only records the data set by those that install a timing app they made, its a really good program

yes, it only records laptimes from people who have installed it, thats why i stopped using it...
you never know how many fast guys are out there and they probably arent using it, because they doesnt bother about some kind of meaningless charts... THEY JUST RACE
Quote from bishtop :I think it only records the data set by those that install a timing app they made

True, still I feel it is a nice invention, except the widget implementation, it TALKS to you after every lap or if you go off track, gosh - that is just too much. Plus it draws an annoying ad into the widget. Still I will keep on using it..
A bonus pack (3) will be available the 20th of December ... for FREE.
It will include 7 cars from Alfa, Maserati, Lamborghini and Pagani.
It seems the Giulia QV is one of them with the 33 Stradale for Alfa.

Nothing about Laguna Seca that should be brought for FREE aswell according to my reading on a german news ...

:o source of the news?
I found only an article from october..
excellent Thumbs up
It's on their FB, Lucaf.

Oh, I see. Nothing in their web-pages (they have even separate News page), nothing in their Steam news feed, nothing in their official youtube channel...but Facebook...this sounds like they are still not sure if it will happen. Anyway, very nice to have something probably great to wait.
